Get gorgeous photographs at your next family reunion with Panasonic's DMC-FZ28. Powerful 10.1-megapixel recording provides plenty of resolution for your photos, so you can make sharp enlargements of your best shots. This camera's wide-angle lens lets you take group pictures of each branch of the family tree. And the 'FZ28's far-reaching 18X optical zoom brings your subjects in tight — shoot candid closeups of the cousins catching up with one another, or snap a cute photo of your niece or nephew wandering away from the party.

An autofocus tracking system keeps the camera trained on a moving subject and maintains focus until you press the shutter button. Compose a photo of a friend, and face detection automatically sets optimal focus and exposure. Then the camera readjusts itself to maintain focus, even if your friend moves or turns his face away from the camera. Keep the 'FZ28 in automatic mode for easy, worry-free shooting — the camera evaluates the surrounding light and chooses appropriate settings for proper exposure. You can also experiment with manual options for more creative control. Enhance your photos with blurred effects, or focus upon an off-center subject for an interesting, eye-catching shot.

This camera's built-in 50MB memory holds approximately nine photos at top resolution — add optional SD™ memory cards for more storage.

Recording Features

LCD Monitor: The DMC-FZ28 has a 2.7" low temperature polycrystalline silicon TFT color LCD monitor featuring approximately 230,000 pixels with nearly 100% field of view. You can adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor in 7 steps. The LCD can be set to automatically turn off after 15 or 30 seconds of non-use. The camera's LCD monitor offers the following operating modes.

  • Auto Power LCD: The brightness of the LCD camera is adjusted automatically depending on how bright it is around the camera.
  • Power LCD: The LCD monitor becomes brightness and easier to see even when taking pictures outdoors.
  • High Angle: The LCD monitor is easier to see when taking pictures with the camera held high above your head.

Viewfinder: The camera uses an LCD viewfinder with approximately 201,000 pixels and a field of view of nearly 100%. By adjusting the diopter knob to suit your eyesight (with or without eyeglasses), the viewfinder image will look clearer. There is a -4 to +4 adjustment. You can adjust the brightness of the LCD viewfinder in 7 steps.

Optics: This camera is equipped with a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with an 18x optical zoom, equivalent to a 27mm-486mm lens on a 35mm camera. If the picture size is not set to the highest setting for each aspect ratio, a maximum of 32.1x optical zoom can be achieved with no picture quality deterioration. This Extended Optical Zoom feature utilizes the center 3-million pixels of the 10-million pixel CCD area, allowing a picture with a higher zoom effect.

Digital Zoom: Using the 4x digital zoom, a maximum of 72x can be achieved with the 18x optical zoom. If the chosen picture size allows for the use of the Extended Optical Zoom, a maximum zoom of 128x can be achieved, combining the 4x digital zoom and the 32.1x extended optical zoom.

Lens Hood: In bright sunlight or backlight, the lens hood will minimize lens flare and ghosting. The lens hood cuts off excess lighting and improves the picture quality.

Optional Lens Compatibility: The optional DMW-LT55 tele-conversion lens allows you to record pictures zooming in much more (1.7 times). The optional DMW-LC55 close-up lens lets you take close-up pictures of a small subject. The DMW-LA3 lens adapter is necessary to attach a tele-conversion or close-up lens.

MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer: MEGA O.I.S. technology helps solve the problem of unintentional hand movement that can result in blurry images, particularly with telephoto shots. You can choose from the following modes:

  • Auto: stabilizer feature works automatically
  • Mode 1: the stabilizer operates continuously and can assist during photo composition
  • Mode 2: the stabilizer function is in standby and activates at the moment the shutter captures the image. This mode offers a greater degree of stabilization.
  • Off: when image stabilization is not desired or when using the camera with a tripod

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 1/2.33" CCD image sensor with approximately 10.7-million total pixels and 10.1-million effective pixels.

Recording Media: The DMC-FZ28 records images on its built-in memory of approximately 50 MB. You can also record images onto SD Memory Cards (8MB-2GB), SDHC Memory Cards (4GB-32GB), and MultiMediaCards (still pictures only).

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG and RAW formats. A 5-second audio clip can be recorded with JPEG images if desired. The camera can also record movies in Quick Time Motion JPEG format with audio. You can set the image quality as follows:

  • Fine: Low compression; gives priority to picture quality
  • Standard: High compression; gives priority to the number of recordable pictures
  • RAW: Uncompressed; must be processed on a PC
  • RAW + JPEG: In addition to the RAW (uncompressed) image, the camera takes a standard equivalent JPEG image simultaneously

Image Resolution/Compression: You can change the resolution and compression settings to suit the purpose of the image you're about to shoot. You can choose from the following resolutions for still images:

  • 4:3 Aspect Ratio:
    • 3648 x 2736 (10M) RAW, RAW + JPEG, Fine, Standard
    • 3072 x 2304 (7M) Fine, Standard
    • 2560 x 1920 (5M) Fine, Standard
    • 2048 x 1536 (3M) Fine, Standard
    • 1600 x 1200 (2M) Fine, Standard
    • 640 x 480 (0.3M) Fine, Standard
  • 3:2 Aspect Ratio:
    • 3648 x 2432 (9M) RAW, RAW + JPEG, Fine, Standard
    • 3072 x 2048 (6M) Fine, Standard
    • 2560 x 1712 (4.5M) Fine, Standard
    • 2048 x 1360 (2.5M) Fine, Standard
  • 16:9 Aspect Ratio:
    • 3648 x 2056 (7.5M) RAW, RAW + JPEG, Fine, Standard
    • 3072 x 1728 (5.5) Fine, Standard
    • 2560 x 1440 (3.5M) Fine, Standard
    • 1920 x 1080 (2M) Fine, Standard

Motion Pictures: In addition, you can shoot motion pictures in 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios, at the following resolutions and frame rates:

  • 4:3 Aspect Ratio:
    • 640 x 480 @ 30 fps
    • 320 x 240 @ 30 fps or 10 fps
  • 16:9 Aspect Ratio:
    • 1280 x 720 @ 30fps
    • 848 x 480 @ 30 fps

Shooting Modes: The camera offers the following shooting modes.

  • Single Shot: The camera shoots a single image with each press of the shutter button.
  • Burst Mode: There are two continuous shooting modes:
    • Normal: In normal burst mode, the camera takes approximately 2.5 pictures per second. In Standard compression, it will record up to a maximum of 5 pictures, while in Fine compression, up to a maximum of 3 pictures will be recorded.
    •  Unlimited: In unlimited burst mode, the camera takes approximately 2 pictures per second and will continue shooting until the capacity of the built-in memory or memory card is full.
  • Self Timer: The self timer is useful when you want to include yourself in the picture when recording still images. The delay time for single shots can be set to 10 seconds or 2 seconds. You can also set the self timer to take 3 pictures after a 10 second delay. The second and third picture are taken in two second intervals after the first.

Focus Modes: The digital camera features the following focus modes.

  • Auto Focus: The camera automatically focuses in on your subject. You can choose from the following auto focusing modes.
    • Face Detection: camera automatically detects a person's face (up to 15 faces), adjusting the exposure and focus to fit the face, regardless of what portion of the picture it is in.
    • Multi-area focusing: camera focuses on any of 5 focus areas.
    • AF Tracking: focus and exposure can be adjusted to a specified subject; focus will keep on following the subject even if it moves (Dynamic tracking)
    • 1-area-focusing (High Speed): camera quickly focuses on the subject in AF area on the center of the screen
    • 1-area-focusing: camera focuses on the subject in AF area on the center of the screen
    • Spot-focusing: camera focuses on the limited narrow area in the screen
  • Manual Focus: Use this function when you want to fix the focus or when the distance between the lens and the subject is determined and you do not want to activate auto focus. The camera's manual focus has two assist modes.
    • MF1: the center of the screen is enlarged; you can adjust the focus while determining the composition of the whole of the screen
    • MF2: the center of the screen is enlarge over the whole screen; this is convenient for adjusting the focus in wide angle shots for which changes in focus are difficult
  • Pre-Focus: This is a technique for focusing in advance on the point the pictures will be taken when it is difficult to focus on the subject with auto focus due to its quick motion. This function is suitable when the distance between the camera and the subject is certain.
  • Macro Focus: You can take pictures of a subject as close as 1 centimeter (0.03 feet) when the lens is in the Wide Mode (1x zoom). As the zoom increases toward Tele (6x to 10x), the distance from the subject that you can take close-up pictures increases in steps up to a maximum of 2 meters (6.57 feet). If you zoom to a magnification of 11x to 18x, you can take a picture of an object as close as 1 meter (3.28 feet) from the lens (tele-macro function).

AF/AE Lock: You can take a picture with the camera's focus and/or exposure locked. This is a technique for setting the focus and the exposure in advance when the subject is outside the focus area or when the contrast is too sharp and the appropriate exposure cannot be achieved. You can select AF Only, AE only or AF/AE.

Continuous Auto Focus: This mode allows you to compose a picture more easily by always focusing on the subject. When shooting in Continuous AF mode, the battery is consumed faster than usual.

AF Assist Lamp: Illuminating the subject with the AF assist lamp allows the camera to focus on the subject in low light conditions. You can turn off the AF assist lamp in the menu if it is not needed. The effective range of the AF assist lamp is 4.92 feet.

Exposure Modes: The camera offers various exposure modes to choose from.

  • Intelligent Auto Mode: The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the subject and recording conditions. Recommended for beginners.

  • Exposure Bracketing: In this mode, 3 pictures are automatically recorded by each press of the shutter button according to the compensation range of the exposure. You can select ±1/3EV, ±2/3EV, ±1EV or 0 EV (off).
  • Color Bracketing: In this mode, up to 3 pictures in black and white, standard or sepia in the selected modes are automatically recorded each time the shutter button is pressed.

Noise Reduction: The camera offers a defeatable Noise Reduction feature used to reduce unwanted picture noise in your recorded image.

Guide Lines: You can align your subject on the camera's horizontal and vertical guide lines or the cross point of these lines so you can take pictures with well-designed composition by viewing the size, the slope and the balance of the subject.

Histogram: A histogram is a graph that displays brightness along the horizontal axis (black to white) and the number of pixels at each brightness level on the vertical axis.

Battery: The FZ28 comes with a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery (CGR-S006A) which gives you approximately 230 minutes of recording time, or about 460 images using the 2.7" LCD monitor and 240 minutes of recording, or about 480 images using the LCD viewfinder. Playback time using the LCD monitor is approximately 480 minutes. The battery takes approximately 120 minutes to fully charge.
