NTSC/ATSC/QAM Tuners: The TV is \r\nequipped with an analog NTSC tuner, a digital ATSC/8VSB tuner, and a digital QAM \r\ntuner for receiving unscrambled digital cable channels. It is not CableCARD \r\ncompatible. You do not need to connect an external HDTV set-top box in order to \r\nreceive High-Definition programming.

Native Resolution: The KDL-50S5100 has a full HD native \r\nresolution of 1920 x 1080 with over 2 million pixels (more than twice the pixels \r\nof 720p HDTV). The TV's three HDMI inputs can \r\naccept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 1080/24p signals, and the two component video \r\ninputs can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p signals. All video signals from standard definition and high \r\ndefinition are upconverted to 1080p.

Bravia Engine 2 Fully Digital Video Processor: The Bravia Engine 2 \r\nfully digital video processor uses a collection of unique Sony technologies to \r\nsignificantly reduce noise, enhance overall image detail, and optimize contrast \r\nso every scene produces sharp, vibrant, life-like images and color.

\r\n

Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) With Dynamic Backlight Control: \r\nSony's Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) uses real-time image processing to \r\ndynamically adjust backlight levels for improved contrast without masking \r\ndetails the filmmaker intended you to see. This powerful combination of features \r\nadjusts the brightness of the backlight both to optimize image quality and \r\nreduce power consumption. It works in real time, controlling bright outdoor \r\nimages and dark interior shots scene by scene for better video quality and a \r\nreduction in power use. Part of the cinematic \r\ndrama in film-making comes from details found in shadows and dark areas of the \r\npicture. ACE delivers deep blacks in darker \r\nscenes, as well as fine details in shadows and other dark areas of the picture \r\nfor a difference you can truly see. Sony's Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) \r\nbuilds on the TV's excellent on-contrast ratio performance of 3,000:1. A Dynamic \r\nContrast Ratio of up to 30,000:1 is achieved by using real-time image processing \r\nto adjust the contrast along with optimizing backlight levels.

3 HDMI Inputs: The \r\nKDL-50S5100 features three HDMI \r\ninputs (1 Rear/2 Side). The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) \r\nterminals provide an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. The HDMI input \r\n\t\twill accept 1080/24p, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. The \r\nrear HDMI input also has \r\nleft and right RCA audio jacks. With an HDMI-to-DVI cable, you can \r\nconnect the TV to a DVI-equipped A/V component. When connecting to a \r\nDVI-equipped component, the RCA audio inputs are used and separate RCA audio \r\ncable must be connected.

24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second \r\n(fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an \r\nopportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high \r\ndefinition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes \r\nadvantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television \r\nproducing images that are smooth and natural looking.

2 Component Video Inputs: The two \r\nrear-panel component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. \r\nIf needed, component video 1 can be used as a composite video input instead.

- Wide Zoom: Enlarges \r\n\t\tthe center portion of the 4:3 picture proportionately, while the left \r\n\t\tand right edges of the screen are stretched to fill the screen \r\n\t\t

- Zoom: Enlarges the \r\n\t\tentire 4:3 picture proportionately to fill the screen (useful for \r\n\t\twatching Letterbox movies)

Screen Settings: The Sony LCD TV offers the following screen \r\nadjustments.

Vertical Center: Allows you to move the position of the picture up and down.

Analog Audio Outputs (Fixed): These stereo RCA audio jacks \r\non the rear-panel of the television allow you to listen to the TV's audio \r\nthrough your stereo system.

Digital Audio Output: \r\nThe rear-panel Optical \r\ndigital output connects to the optical digital input of your digital audio \r\nequipment which is PCM/Dolby Digital compatible. Dolby Digital Audio signal from \r\nthe HDMI input will be output as PCM.

PC Functions

PC Input (RGB): A side-panel 15-pin HD15 \r\njack allows you to connect your personal computer to the display. There is also \r\na corresponding stereo mini-jack (3.5mm) for the computer's audio signal.

PC Compatible: The television \r\ncan be used as a monitor for your PC through the TV's RGB HD-15 input or HDMI \r\ninput. The TV supports the following PC resolutions - VGA, SVGA, XGA, WXGA, SXGA \r\nand HDTV. You can adjust Phase, Vertical Position and Wide \r\nMode of the picture.

PC Picture Modes: The TV \r\nfeatures two PC Picture Modes when using the television as a computer monitor.\r\n

Convenience Features

Favorite Menu: The Favorites Menu function makes it easy to quickly access your favorite channels and video inputs.

Input/Channel Label:\r\nThis feature allows you to assign labels to the television's inputs and \r\nyour favorite channels. You can create station call letters (up to nine \r\ncharacters) to the \r\nchannel numbers. You can assign the following labels for each input (except PC \r\nand Cable/Antenna inputs): DVD, VCR, Blu-ray, Cable Box, Satellite, DVR, \r\nGame, Camcorder. Or you can also select a custom nine character label for each of these inputs.

Input/Channel Block: This feature allows you to block \r\ncertain channels \r\nor inputs regardless of program ratings.

\r\n

Caption Vision/Info \r\nBanner: This feature allows \r\nClosed Caption and/or channel programming information to be displayed on the TV \r\nscreen. You can choose from CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, Text1, Text2, Text3 and Text4. \r\nDigital Channel's Closed Caption text can be customized.

\r\n

Energy Star 3.0 Certified: Sony S-series HDTVs exceed Energy Star 3.0 \r\nrequirements by incorporating advanced power saving features such as Light \r\nSensor technology that adjusts backlight intensity based on ambient room \r\nlighting conditions, Dynamic Backlight Control that adjusts backlight \r\nintensity based on the brightness of the image on the screen, and PC Power \r\nManagement.

\r\n

Backlight: This feature reduces the power consumption by turning \r\n\toff the backlight.
Light Sensor: In the menu, you \r\ncan activate the automatic picture brightness control. A light sensor measures \r\nthe amount of ambient light in the room and adjusts the picture brightness level \r\naccordingly.
PC Power Management: This feature automatically places \r\n\tthe television in Standby mode when there is not signal input for more than \r\n\t5 minutes.

\r\n

Timers: There is one event \r\ntimer and a sleep timer built in. The event timer is set for the day, time, channel, duration \r\nand volume. The sleep timer switches the television off \r\nafter a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 15, 30, 45, 60, \r\n90, or 120 minutes.

\r\n

Parental Control: You can select a viewing limitation \r\nbased on the TV and movie ratings. Three presets are \r\navailable (Child, Youth, and Young Adult) or the limitation can be customized to \r\nspecific industry ratings. The control is accessed and protected by a 4-digit \r\npassword.

\r\n

Remote Control

\r\n

Wireless Remote \r\nControl: The TV comes supplied with an IR wireless remote \r\ncontrol (RM-YD028). The remote is designed for TV operation only, unless used \r\nwith Bravia Sync AV components connected by HDMI.

BRAVIA Sync: This TV is equipped with \r\n\t\t\t\t\tBRAVIA Sync, an HDMI Control function that allows \r\n\t\t\t\t\tcommunication between Sony TVs and other Sony equipment when \r\n\t\t\t\t\tthey are connected via HDMI. Once the supported equipment is \r\n\t\t\t\t\tconnected, the following operations are available:

Turn off the equipment \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\tautomatically when you turn off the TV.
When the connected \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\tequipment is turned on by One-Touch-Play, the TV will \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\tautomatically turn on and select the respective HDMI \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\tinput.
Automatically turn on \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\tequipment listed under the External Inputs in the menu.
Equipment operation such a Play, Pause, Fast \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\tForward, Reverse, and Stop.
When a Sony A/V receiver \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\twith BRAVIA Sync is connected the following \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\tadditional operations are possible:
- Turning on the A/V \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\treceiver when the TV is turned on
- Automatically \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tswitching the A/V receiver's \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinput to the TV
- Adjust the volume \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand muting of the A/V receiver with the TV's remote \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcontrol

\r\nMounting Options

\r\n

Tabletop Stand: The display comes attached to a detachable \r\ntabletop pedestal stand which can be removed for wall-mounting purposes by \r\nremoving four screws. The television weighs 76 lbs with the stand attached.

Optional Wall Mount Brackets: The stand can be removed, \r\nallowing you to wall-mount the TV using an optional wall-mount bracket. The TV \r\nhas 4 threaded screw holes with a horizontal spacing of 11-3/4" (300mm) and a \r\nvertical spacing of 11-3.4" (300mm).
