Our take on the Sony CDX-F5710

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Bigger really is better! Just take a look at the oversized LCD display on Sony's CDX-F5710 CD receiver. No more squinting to see the track numbers. This display delivers all of the system information the way you want it: big, bright, easy-to-read — and in your choice of seven background colors. And don't worry about fumbling with the controls, either. The large control panel makes navigating through your MP3 folders and CDs easy.

Three sets of preamp outputs with high- and low-pass filters allow you to incorporate the CDX-F5710 into the most extensive mobile audio system. Use the "Aux Lite" input to connect an iPod, plug-and-play satellite radio tuner, or other portable music source.

Drive your speakers with four channels of 17 watts RMS power, and use EQ7 (seven preset tone curves and a seven-band EQ) to tame the sound. BBE MP processing (exclusive to Sony receivers) ensures that all of those digital music files will sound their best.

The CDX-F5710 is also compatible with Sony's CONNECT online music store, giving you a library of over 650,000 songs at your disposal. Just buy 'em, burn 'em to a CD-R or CD-RW, and you can play them back right from the receiver.

Features

Drive S: The CDX-F5710 features the Drive S chassis platform. Drive S includes the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12 V power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes an improved suspension to resist shocks, a new motor that draws less power, and a fast new low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The 52W x 4 S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs.

Variable Color Display: The display backlight illumination can be adjusted to any of the following colors: light blue, blue, white (has a bluish tint), green, yellow green, red, or purple.

ATRAC CD Playback: The CDX-F5710 plays ATRAC3plus/ATRAC3 files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Each ATRAC disc can have a maximum of 255 groups and 999 files.

MP3 Playback: This unit can play MP3 files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 150 folders and 300 files/folders. During MP3 playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.

BBE MP: When playing back MP3 files, the BBE MP circuit recovers and recreates harmonics, restoring the detail, warmth and nuances that existed in the original recording.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

EQ7: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Club, Jazz, New Age, Rock, or Custom. For each preset, you can adjust the following frequencies: 62Hz, 157Hz, 396Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 6.3kHz, and 16kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10dB to -10dB in 1dB increments.

XM Satellite Radio Controls: This unit can control an optional Sony XM tuner. The optional tuner, along with an antenna and subscription, will allow you to receive XM Satellite Radio. XM Satellite Radio programming features over 130 channels of programming beamed coast-to-coast, including 68 channels of commercial-free, digital-quality music, and more than 60 channels of news, talk, sports, entertainment, children's programming, and information.

SSIR-EXA Adaptive Reception: The SSIR-EXA tuner is equipped with "Adaptive Reception". The Adaptive Reception feature has two modes ("IF Auto" and "IF Wide") for optimizing FM reception. The "Wide" mode decreases the tuner's selectivity but results in better frequency response. The "IF Auto" mode automatically adjusts the tuner for a good balance between frequency response and minimum station-to-station interference. The Adaptive Reception feature cannot be turned off.

Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the strongest signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency.

Station Memo: You can assign a name of up to 8 characters in length to each tuner preset station. Station Memos can be used with the List-up function to locate a station.

2 V Mono Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: In addition to the 2 V front and rear preamp outputs, this unit includes one set of 2 V mono subwoofer preamp outputs. Although there are two female RCA subwoofer outputs, the same signal is carried by both connections. A low-pass filter (see below) can be used to filter high frequencies from the signals output by the subwoofer outs.

High-pass Filter: The front and rear preamp outputs have a selectable high-pass filter that may be set to 78Hz, 125Hz, or off.

Low-pass Filter: The subwoofer preamp outputs have a selectable low-pass filter that may be set to 78Hz, 125Hz, or off.

Aux Lite Auxiliary Input: The CDX-F5710 has an auxiliary input on the rear panel, allowing you to connect a separate audio source, such as a portable MiniDisc or MP3 player, or the audio output from a mobile/portable DVD player. In the past, Sony receivers required a separate adapter, however, this unit's "Aux Lite" input allows you to directly connect the auxiliary unit to the receiver's stereo RCA input jacks.

Note: If a CD/MD changer is connected to this receiver, you will not be able to connect an auxiliary source without an adapter (158XA300).

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that Sony calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. When the dimmer mode is set to "Auto" and the illumination lead receives power, the display dims to a preset level. The display brightness is not affected by the vehicle's dimmer control. Also, the dimmer feature may be turned off, so dimming does not take place when the illumination lead receives power. You may choose to dim the display at all times by setting the dimmer mode to "On".

Note: For this feature to work, the unit's illumination wire must be connected to your vehicle's dash lights wire.

45-Degree Installation: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

Wired Remote Compatibility: In addition to the supplied wireless remote, the receiver can be controlled by an optional wired rotary commander (item 158RMX4S). Once the wired remote is connected, you can use the menu system to change the control direction of the remote, depending on which side of the steering wheel you choose to mount the remote.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is compatible with Sony Unilink CD/MP3 and MD changers. In addition, this unit can control compatible Sony Mobile Memory Stick players.

Multiple Changer Control: A maximum of 5 CD changers, 5 CD/MP3 changers, or 5 MD changers may be connected to this receiver. When connecting CD, CD/MP3 and MD changers, you may connect up to a total of 7 changers (but there must not be more than 5 of one type of changer). When connecting more than one changer to this receiver, you must use the Sony XA-C30 source selector.

CD Text/MD Memo Display: When used with a compatible CD changer and a CD Text encoded CD, this unit will display the CD Text information. When using a compatible Sony MD changer, this receiver can display disc and track names that have been prerecorded on MDs.

Disc Memo: When a changer with the Custom File function is connected to this unit, you can enter names, up to 8 characters long, into memory for up to 110 discs. After a disc has been given a custom title, you may search for the disc, by title, using the List-up function.

Auto Scroll: If the text being displayed exceeds 8 characters and the Auto Scroll function is on, the information will automatically scroll across the screen.

Note

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.

Great- IF CD PLAYER WORKS!

Written By Scott, Fairfax, VA on Saturday, May 31, 2008

I bought this a few years back, self installed and all was great. After about 13 months the CD player died and could not read any CD's. I got pulled away for a while and so I wasn't able to address it until a few weeks ago. Suddenly it is playing CD's again! Okay- must have been the weather, dust, whatever. So after a week it decides to stop playing CD's again with the same "READ... READ... READ...READ" error.
I look on line and see a number of people have the same problem but most were lucky enough to have it happen while under warranty- unlike me.
Long story short, I can send it back to Sony and pay $120 to swap it out or I can invest the money into a system WITHOUT a known flaw.
I am buying something else from Crutchfield instead of reinvesting in this.

Great CD Player

Written By Kevin, Tupelo, MS on Friday, November 25, 2005

I really like the Sony cd player and my daughter LOVES IT! I bought it for her birthday and she spent all day sitting in the car listening to it. The thing that I really like was the customer support. I had a question about the connectivity of the stereo and the customer support knew right away what I needed to do and was very helpful and friendly. I will always buy my stereo equipment from Crutchfield. Thanks!

Worth it

Written By Anonymous, South Dakota on Sunday, November 20, 2005

I know most of the people out their think that we South Dakotans still ride around in horse and wagon things and dont need somethin like this. But i drive a '88 Bronco II and i installed this and immediatly afterwards got Sony Xplod mids for it and let me tell u, i know friends that have spent way more than 500 dollars on a system and all i did was install this, the mids and an equalizer/amp for it and THIS THING WILL BLOW YOU AWAY!!!! Just about the only thing that i can say is wrong with this thing is the push button sound selector, if u suddenly hit a bump in the road and push that button u have to wait for it to get out of the bass and treble settings in order to turn up the volume, this is the very first aftermarket deck i have installed in one of my rides but i have alot of other friends with Pioneer decks that are 75 bucks more and this keeps right with them.

The beeping with drive you mad!

Written By wd, Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, November 16, 2005

Had the unit for a day and love it, except the famous beeping everyone has been talking about. Called customer services and they said only way to disable it is if you add an amp (how dumb is that?!). Unit is pretty much perfect in every way, but I think I'm going to return it and get a JVC or Pioneer.

Sony CDX-F5710

Written By Jason, Columbus, OH on Saturday, October 29, 2005

Only thing that stinks is that the face has to flip down to insert CD. Previous review complained about cycling through inputs (Tuner, Disc, Aux). If you dont have anything hooked up to AUX, you can turn it off, then you won't cycle thru it!

Love It!!

Written By faye_w, Yonkers, NY on Wednesday, October 19, 2005

Bought this about two weeks ago with a pair of Alpine SPS-080A and a pair of Sony XS-S160CX speakers for my 1992 Mustang Convt., and let me tell you its great. The controls are easy to use, and the sound is just lovely!!. The different color display is cool (especially at night) and the aux input is perfect for my ipod which i use all the time with it. Also love the preset equalizer (I have it on Xplod). Worth every penny!!

Good Stuff

Written By Michael Gonzales, San Antonio on Sunday, October 09, 2005

Installed this head unit about two weeks ago, so far it's pretty good. I like the many display colors. It sounds good too. I still have factory speakers, can't wait to upgrade those too. The track ID is pretty cool, you dont have to remember the numbers/ names of your favorite tracks. But not every cd manif. is up on this yet.

Sony CDX-F5710

Written By derek_c_lee, Santa Clara, CA on Friday, September 23, 2005

A great radio!

Very inutitive controls for all radio functions. It very easy to navigate MP3s, stations, etc. The buttons are large enough and you can do this while driving. Many other radios have very complex controls. Sony got it right on this radio.

The display is nice and simple and large enough to display enough text. Chaning colors is pretty cool. You can also dim the display if you want to.

A great buy and I highly recommend it.

Written By More and Faster, North Richland Hills, TX on Sunday, September 18, 2005

This radio looks great and when the night rolls around even better! With seven color choices to suite your moods you can't go wrong with this one. Great specs on the radio and easy controls to use and tune your setup. The price is a steal and it comes with a rebate, right now anyway. Enjoy !
