Building a mobile video system from the ground up? JVC's KD-DV5100 DVD receiver makes a great foundation, whatever you're planning!

Building a mobile video system from the ground up? JVC's KD-DV5100 DVD receiver makes a great foundation, whatever you're planning!

Like most new receivers, this sleek number plays a wide variety of formats, including standard and recordable DVDs and CDs, plus CD-Rs or CD-RWs. But JVC adds a feature that'll blow your mind: Giga MP3. Using your computer and appropriate software, you can burn up to 100 hours of MP3s or WMAs on a single recordable DVD, and the KD-DV5100 will play them. All of them. That's an unprecendented amount of music, all on a single disc, right at your fingertips!

The combination of plenty of MOSFET power (20 watts x 4 channels RMS), excellent sound controls (the adjustable six curves of Custom EQ), and 24-bit digital-to-analog resolution makes your music and movie soundtracks sound forceful, vibrant, and lifelike. To enjoy DVD video, you'll need to connect an external monitor to the video output.

And if system expansion's part of your plans, the KD-DV5100 is ready to accommodate. It features a front-panel auxiliary input, so you can add a portable player, such as an iPod™. Built-in controls let you connect a SIRIUS Satellite Radio tuner (subscription and antenna also required) to enjoy over 120 channels of music, sports, news, talk, entertainment, and much, much more. And a set of preamp outputs lets you connect an external amplifier to drive your system with more power.

To make using the system easy, for you or your passengers, the KD-DV5100 also comes with a full-function, comprehensive wireless remote control.

General Features

cEQ (7-Band EQ): This model has Rock, Jazz, Classic, Hip Hop, Pops, and User preset EQ curves. For the User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.4 kHz, 6 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -5dB to +5 dB in 1 dB increments.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-DV5100 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo. MP3 files with a bit rate from 32-320 kbps and WMA files with a bit rate from 32-192 kbps are supported. Each disc can have a maximum of 1100 files and 250 folders, with a maximum of 999 files per folder.

SIRIUS Satellite Radio Controls: This unit can control an optional SIRIUS Satellite tuner (item #607SIRJVC1). In addition to the SIRIUS tuner, you will need an antenna and subscription in order to receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio programming.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-DV5100 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low", the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high", and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Source Naming: The KD-DV5100 allows you to assign names of up to 8 characters for AM and FM stations (30 station maximum), and a name up to 32 characters for CDs (including a connected CD changer, but not MP3/WMA or CD Text discs--30 disc maximum).

Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).

+10/-10 and +100/-100 Buttons: When selecting CD tracks or an MP3 file within a folder, you can jump ahead or jump back to the nearest track/file number that is a multiple of 10 by using the "+10" or "-10" buttons on the remote. For example, when selecting track/file 32 from track/file 6, you can press the "+10" button three times (>10, >20, >30) to get to 30, then the "track up" button twice (>31, >32) to get to track/file 32. For MP3/WMA tracks with a number greater than 99, use the +100/-100 buttons.

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

Rear Panel Auxiliary Input: A rear panel auxiliary input (left and right RCA audio jacks) is provided to allow the connection of another portable audio source.

Compatibility with Optional AUX Input Adapter: The optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item # 105KSU57) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary input on this unit. Item 105KSU57 connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the aux input adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Clock Display: When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that JVC calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. The dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), Auto (display window automatically dims when your car head lights are turned on), or On (display is always dimmed). Note that the amount of dimming is fixed, it cannot be adjusted, and the illumination wire must be connected for Auto operation.

DVD/Video CD Features

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-DV5100 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on DVD-ROM, DVD-R, and DVD-RW discs. The disc must be compliant with UDF-Bridge format. Discs must be created on a computer with a DVD burner. The DVD burner software application must be compliant with UDF-Bridge format.

Note: DVDs recorded on stand alone consumer DVD burners are not compatible with this unit.

Direct Access: Using the supplied remote, you can directly access any title or chapter on a DVD, and any track on a Video CD.

Multi-Angle Display: This function allows you to choose the viewing angle of scenes that were shot from a number of different angles.

Note: This function is limited to DVDs recorded with multiple camera angles.

Monitor Type: You can choose one of the following monitor types:

  • 16:9 (Multi): select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 16:9
  • 4:3 (Multi) Letter Box: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3. While viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen.
  • 4:3 (Multi) Pan Scan: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3. While viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars do not appear; however, the left and right edges of the picture will not be shown on the screen.

Scan Search: When playing a DVD or Video CD, there are five fast-play speeds in both directions (2x, 5x, 10x, 20x, and 60x).

Slow Motion: When playing a DVD or Video CD, there are five slow motion speeds in both directions (1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2).

Repeat Play: When playing a DVD, you can repeat the current chapter. When playing a Video CD, you can repeat the current track.

Random Play: When playing a Video CD, you can play the tracks in random order.

Intro Play: In this mode, you can play the first 10 seconds of each track on a Video CD.

Zoom: When playing DVDs or Video CDs, you can enlarge the picture using the zoom feature. You can choose one of five zoom settings. Once the image is enlarged, you can move the image around on the screen.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of Auto or On.

Digital Audio Output: You can choose the type of signal that passes through the optical digital output:

  • PCM Only: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder that is incompatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio
  • Dolby Digital/PCM: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder incompatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio
  • Stream/PCM: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder that is compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is equipped with JVC's "J-Link" CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer (257CHX1500). Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

Inputs and Outputs Notes
