Thanks to Stereo Everywhere® technology and a "they've-thought-of-everything" design, the cool Bose® 191 speakers flood your favorite room with classic Bose sound, without filling up your living area with bulky speakers and stands. They don't call them Virtually Invisible® for nothing.

Two full-range drivers in an Articulated Array® speaker design deliver great performance. Bose's famous Stereo Everywhere® technology sends rich stereo sound all over, so you don't have to search for a small "sweet spot" to really enjoy your music. And proprietary ported enclosures provide clean, consistent performance — especially in the lower frequencies — regardless of the space behind your wall or above your ceiling.

These easy-to-install speakers can be placed in your walls or your ceilings, and they come with a pair of rectangular grilles and a pair of circular grilles — you get to choose which shape best matches your room's look. The grilles and grille frames are finished in white, but are paintable to match your decor.

Optional kits (see "Accessories") are required for installing the Bose 191 speakers in new construction.

Features

Articulated Array Speaker Design: Each speaker features two 2-1/2" full-range drivers in an Articulated Array speaker design, providing beautiful stereo sound across a wide area between the speakers and delivering a more stable center image than most conventional speakers.

Stereo Everywhere Speaker Performance: Because many conventional speakers radiate sound directly into the room, you hear balanced stereo sound only in one small "sweet spot." Using the Articulated Array speaker design, these speakers allow you to experience rich stereo sound almost anywhere in the room, not just in one small "sweet spot".

Proprietary Enclosure Technology: The proprietary enclosure technology ensures consistent performance regardless of space behind the wall or above the ceiling.

Proprietary Ported Enclosure: The proprietary ported enclosure produces cleaner and deeper low-frequency performance and ensures that lower frequencies are mainly directed into the intended listening area, not into adjoining rooms.

Virtually Invisible Speaker Design: These speakers blend with your room - taking up minimal space - while delivering room-filling, lifelike sound.

Magnetically Shielded Drivers: The magnetically shielded drivers allow for speaker placement in close proximity to a television without magnetic interference.

Automatic Protection Circuitry: The Automatic Protection Circuitry protects the drivers from being overdriven without interrupting the music.

Mounting

Installation: These easy-to-install speakers can be placed in your walls or your ceilings, and they come with a pair of rectangular grilles and a pair of round grilles. The speaker requires a cutout with the following dimensions: W=8.0625", H=5.5". A depth of 4.125" is required behind the drywall, regardless of the grilles you choose. Once the holes are cut, each speaker can be dropped in and the dogleg clamps can be tightened, allowing you to secure each speaker to the drywall without any extra assembly.

Note: For installation in new construction, an optional rough-in kit is required. For installation in a drop ceiling, an optional drop ceiling kit is required.

Paintable Frames and Grilles: The grille frames install flush to your wall or ceiling for a finished look and can be painted to match your decor.

Q
Can I use these speakers to replace Bose lifestyle v30 cube speakers?

I mounted mine into the ceiling & wired them to my pioneer receiver. What type of receiver are you planning to wire them to ?

Are these speakers wireless?

For additional information I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question.

A
Thanks for your question. I'm sorry, no, they are not wireless. Each speaker has a screw down terminal for speaker wire, so wiring would be required. Hope this helps.

Q
Would be nice if I could exactly match the grill color to the wall color. Is there a way to paint the grills the same paint as the wall. Maybe dilute the paint a bit and then carefully hand rub in with a rag trying to avoid gunking up the holes in the grill? If I experiment with this idea and it doesn't go too well, can you order a new grill? Cheaply?

Crutch field sent e-mailed this question to see if I could answer it. I think that they would be in a much better position to answer that I, but I can't imagine there being a problem painting the frame. The grill is a different issue. The holes on my grill are very small and I think it would be very difficult to paint them without getting any clogging. Assuming that you are confident that you can work well with a toothpick, I see no reason you couldn't paint anything that is plastic or metal as long as you don't get any overspray on the speakers. Good luck!! Of course anything with a fabric cover should not be painted, but I am sure you know that.

They come with round and rectangular grilles. You could test on the ones you are not going to use.....then proceed if it works.
bill  Jul 08, 2016
A
Typos. I used a straight pin to open the holes in the grill back up in the problem area. To A discerning eye that is obvious.
justin  Jul 08, 2016
A
In my opinion the grills do not paint easily. I used a high-quality enamel, and I actually remodel houses for a living. With that said, there were a couple of areas where the grill is completely closed up with paint. I used a straight and to open the house back up but it is obvious to a discerning eye that has been done. Hopefully this is of some help.

Q
Can these be used with the old Acoustimass systems?
brad  May 30, 2016
1 answer
A
The answer to your question can vary depending on which Acoustimass system you're referring to and how you plan on using the Bose Virtually Invisible 191 speakers with it. For more information on using these speakers with old/existing Bose equipment, you would be better off reaching out to our Advisors by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat (via the Contact Us link at the top of our website). Q
Could I use these for a 5.1 as the fronts and rears and a diff center channel and sub?
william  May 26, 2016
2 answers
A
Partial answer: I have two Bose 191 speakers and a DT SC4000 subwoofer. I had no problem using a different subwoofer as it has its own volume control with internal amplifier. This SW is driven from my preamplifier connected via RCA cable. The Bose 191 speakers are driven from my amplifier, with individual left/right volume controls, connected via banana plugs and speaker cables.
william  May 27, 2016
A
You probably could. They have good sound, after all, they are Bose. Comes with both round and rectangular grilles and look nice. No exposed screws. I use them as added rear channels on a system with a sub and they work fine in that application.
bill  May 27, 2016
Q
Can these same speakers be used for the ceiling too (vault ceiling), or only in the walls? If connecting to receiver / subwoofer for 5.1 surround sound, is there a way to only purchase 5...or must you have to purchase all 3 pairs?

Did u ever find your answer to the 5th speaker? Why not get two pairs and get a different higher grade single front/center Bose speaker? I had the same question. Don't want to waste money on a third pair when all I want is 5.
jim  May 19, 2016
A
Mine and in the ceiling and work very well.
rick  Jul 16, 2015

BOSE 191 SPEAKERS CAN BE USED IN CEILING OR WALL APPLICATIONS. I HAVE USED THEM BOTH WAYS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE PRE-WIRE TEMPLATES IF THIS IS NEW CONSTRUCTION. I THINK THE ONLY WAY TO PURCHASE IS IN PAIRS.
richard  Jul 13, 2015
A
yes they can, I have a pair in my bathroom with is a vaulted ceiling, I also used the rectangle covers cause they are smaller, they only come in pairs. can not buy them individually.
ryan  Jul 13, 2015
A
The speakers work fine in both walls and ceilings. Great sound. I used them for rear speakers, and then the BOSE mini boxes for the fronts. Place the center speaker (voices) at the TV because you want the voices to come from the TV direction. In addition, voices are better if the base response is not overloaded. So find a smaller, high quality speaker for the center channel and you may be pleasantly surprised with the overall system performance.

Ceiling mount is no problem. Speakers come with two sets of speakers covers.......one set is round and made for ceiling mount. These are veru good speakers.
daniel  Jul 13, 2015

We bought these speakers for our kitchen ceiling and they work beautifully! Don't know about purchasing singly or in pairs, but I do know that they do a very nice job in the ceiling.

Don't know about purchasing odd numbers, but I installed my two pair of 191's in coffering of my 14 ft. ceiling. We get plenty of compliments on the sound and look.
misty  Jul 13, 2015
A
These speakers can be used for the ceiling and in the walls. We have installed them in 10 theater installations we have done for the US Army. When connecting to receiver / sub-woofer for 5.1 surround sound you must use 3 pairs
edwin  Jul 13, 2015

Cant speak as to the 5th speaker option. Yes these can be mounted in vault ceilings. I have 4 of them mounted in my home. I have them mounted to the bose rough in brackets that I installed prior to sheetrock. With using these speakers there shouldn't be any issue going just into sheetrock as they clamp the sheetrock between the securing clips and the faceplate. Hope this helps.

Q
What is the round cut out size?
tanveer  Jul 06, 2015

A
It is the same as the rectangular cut out. The round grill is purely aesthetic.
christina  Jul 08, 2015
A
The round grills fits In the square cut out you do not need to cut a round hole.

I'm sorry, but I don't remember the exact size, but they have a template included. I think it is about 10", however Crutchfield is very good about providing help. I think you can just call them and they'll know the answer, but I may be getting this question because they didn't know. At any rate, it's about 10". It's a very good product and the instructions were quite easy. I ran into a problem because when I cut into the wall with a handheld saber saw, I ran into some water pipes in the wall. I didn't cause a leak or anything, but I had to adjust the speakers so that the air intake came from above and not below. Fairly easy to do as they can be adjusted. Overall, a good product. Best wishes.
jerry  Jul 08, 2015
A
Same speaker. Just the grill is round but it's much larger than the rectangular grill

Q
Can a TV drive these speakers?
robert  Oct 17, 2014

A
Hello Rob D. I purchased these speaker in late 2013. My Samsung smart TV was not able to drive them. I purchased a receiver which hooks into the TV and drives the speakers. It actually worked out great because sometimes I simply want to listen to music in the TV room. Overall love the speakers, Dave
david  Oct 21, 2014
A
I can't answer your question. My 191 speakers are connected to a receiver.
ronald  Oct 20, 2014
A
I run mine through a receiver and had to get a sub as well as Bose 301's so I could have full sound. The 191's only have high and mid range at best, they now serve as good rear surround speakers.
john h  Oct 20, 2014
A
No, you need an amp

Q
Can these speakers be used for a 7.1 home theatre system with the two side speakers not being placed on the side walls but in the ceiling to the sides of listing area?
ray  Feb 11, 2014
3 answers
A
Yes they could work that way.
vincent  Apr 09, 2014
A
For such application, the speakers need to be installed in the side walls of the listening area, and at the same position in each wall.
bonne g  Feb 12, 2014
A
I'm not sure about a 7.1 system, but we use the bose 191's as rear components with a pair of Bose 301 Series V's and a sub woofer. It works great. The 191's don't have a lot of power or bass, but they work well as rear components in a surround set up though.
