Video Connections: The Toshiba DR430 is equipped with the following video connections.

Rapid Playback: This function is available only on disc recorded in the Dolby Digital format, and plays back in a slightly faster (1.3x) or slower speed (0.8x) while keeping the sound output.

Q
Hi. I am trying to set up my dvd recorder to record soccer games on TV. I have a time warner cable box so would I need to purchase extra cords? I attached the cords supplied in the box to the TV but it would not record anything onto the blank DVD R+ i purchased.

Roxanne, It's most likely due to how your cable box is currently connected to the DVD-recorder. Basically, you want the signal (audio/sound) from the cable box to go to the recorder first ('input' ports on the backside; there may be one on the front panel as well if I recall correctly) and your TV should be connected to the 'output' ports of recorder (so that you could watch what you've recorded). I do not recall what sorts of cables come w/ Toshiba (most likely just RCA cables w/ 3 connectors marked red/white/yellow...) but pending on what you may have (e.g., s-video cable) and/or what connectors your cable-box/TV support, different/multiple connections can be made between the three as well. Hope this helps.

I do not have a cable box. I doubt if there is any problem with the wires. Try recording a soap opera or something to see if it works. Some shows are "copy right protected" and will not record on a DVR. They do not want you to have a good disc copy, thank your politicians for that. They want you to use a "Tivo" or something and pay rent forever. However a VCR recorder will probably still work. Check on the internet for other options. If storage space is a problem you may want to transfer the VHS tape to DVD.

Hi Roxanne, I do not think the cables are the problem. Make sure the DR430 is properly connected to the cable box and the TV. Also, it may be that not all discs are compatible with the DR430. I believe the DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and the DVD+R are compatible with this machine. I use the DVD+RW. All new discs probably have to be formatted before they will record. I think the DVD+RW is automatically formatted once inserted. You should see this indicated on your TV screen when formatting occurs. I hope this helps. Ken S.

Thinking about this some more; and it should be obvious, you need to leave the cable box on. You record what you see. Change the the station, and that is what you will get. Have to watch something else on another set. I'll bet that you need to set up the video in from the menu. If you didn't see the menu at all, then you have to select the correct input from the remote. Hope this helps, sounds difficult, but once you get it down to just a few basics, it is easy.

For the best picture, you need to hook an S-Video cable to the DR430. You may not have an S- out on the cable box? Really need to know how you have it hooked up now, even if it is only the color of the cables. The other thing, is the DR430 set up correctly? You have to get into the menu and select your video source (front/back/type of input). Otherwise, nothing. If that is all ok, really should be using DVD-R or -RW discs. I have bought four of these, and recorded only on -R discs. Finally, I hope your cable box doesn't have some added copyright protection. I have no trouble recording from Dish network; but had experienced lock-outs from U-Verse, and yet recorded with no problems from Dish. Need to provide the specific hookup. Can use the cables that come in the box if you have to (composite in-yellow).

This unit does not have a tuner. You can use it (with the proper video input) connected to an external tuner, cable box, or satellite tuner box. If using a satellite receiver connection, it is recommended you have a satellite link timer. I'm using it to save memorable beta and vhs tapes to DVD. It can be used with my TV cable box, but can only record whatever channel is set on the cable box. My VHS machines still do that for me.

Q
As this unit does not have a digital input, only analog RCA inputs, that will only give you an analog copy of the DVD, not a digital one. This severely limits the quality of the recorded DVD. Does anyone agree/disagree?

I have had four Toshibas, two currently active, and another two given as gifts over the last eight years. THE PICTURE QUALITY IS EXCELLENT ! You should be using the S-Video input, not the composite video. Yes it is analog, but far better. Make sure the disc is finalized and you will see that the results are close to HD, especially with the unit up-scaling, and the video processors in your HD TV doing their work. But Hollywood is still unhappy with the 1982 Betamax decision, so you will never get to make a digital (like using an HDMI cable) copy for yourself. S-Video is the best you will get, and it is not bad at all. The fact is that the disc quality is the best that you can get (far better than tape), and that a digital input just isn't going to happen. In fact, a year ago Hollywood forced blu-ray manufacturers to remove the S-Video outputs from their players. The manual is thick, has far too many choices to make; so stick to one disc type and format. I stay with DVD-R disc using the Video mode. After the setup, all you have to do is put a disc in and record. Just be aware that if you want to record a TV show without the commercials, you will have to do an assembly edit. It isn't difficult, just remember that hard drives die without warning. I've had two go, but already transferred the content to disc. Don't forget to finalize the disc so that you can play back on another player. This is the best that an individual can do. I checked the Crutchfield site tonight, and there is an S-Video input/output, and the price is the same as about two years ago. I would buy from them again, if only for the advice. Good luck.

You will be able to use the A/V out from your camcorder to connect to this unit for transfer from those tapes to DVD. A/V Inputs: The DR430 features two sets of A/V inputs, one on the rear-panel and one on the front-panel, each featuring stereo RCA audio, as well as composite video and S-video jacks.

The only outputs I see are what I call your normal RCA cable outputs. It appears to have composite and component out puts. It also has a digital coax out put, I think it is just for sound. It has the same kind of inputs, the RCA plugs plus some USB. I really don't know what you need for the digital box you asked about. I don't have one. My out put goes directly to the TV. Oh, it also has some S-video plugs.
james edward  Dec 27, 2013
A
It depends on what connectors come with your converter box as the DVD recorder will need to be between the box and the TV. The rear panel (& I have three of these) will handle the better s-video input, as well as the RCA video and audio plugs. To the TV, you can connect with an HDMI (only if a newer TV), set of component cables (video and audio), or a set of regular RCA video and audio cables. What I am leaving out is the f-fitting cable (twist on with a copper center stinger). It is ok if that is your input to the converter box, but there is no fitting for an f-cable on the recorder. I suspect that you have an f-cable from the box going into the TV. That won't work. You need the fittings described above. If you connect to the TV with a set of RCA cables, that can go into the recorder, and another set into the TV. Then you are set. Be aware that you can't record one thing and watch another. You literally record what you see at the time. If you download the manual from the Toshiba site, a diagram is on page 18. The picture quality from this recorder is excellent. There are many discs you can use and far too many options. The simple way to go is buy DVD-R discs and use the video mode. Discs are only recorded once, but they are only about 50 cents each. The RW disc can be recorded many times. Toshiba works very well with Verbatim brand discs. This is a lot to take in. ***You might want to call the Crutchfield experts for help at 1-888-955-6000. Good luck.
