Video: Home Theater Auto Calibration

Like a fine orchestra, a home theater receiver needs to tune up before it performs. The reason is simple. No sound system is “one size fits all.” Speaker size, as well as your room’s dimensions, furniture, flooring, ceiling height and even building materials are all things that can affect and possibly degrade sound quality. Fortunately, most receivers come with a built-in solution — auto setup.

I'm here in the Crutchfield lab today to talk with you about calibrating your new home theater receiver. What's different in the automatic setup system — you can tell immediately you don't have a whole lot of things to glance through and press buttons on. All you really need to do is go to "start".

So you get a prompt from the system that tells you to connect the calibration microphone. So I plug the microphone in, and oh, look. Now it gives me the prompt to press on "next". You'll see that this particular setup will calibrate your subwoofer. Now the prompt is to place the microphone at ear level at the main listening position then select "begin test".

What you want to do is raise the microphone up to the level of where your ear is going to be. We find that the best way to do this is to take a tripod, and the threaded insert is exactly the same so it's very easy to place the microphone at the top of the tripod and adjust the tripod to about your ear level. So now we simply go to "begin test" There we are.

Now it's simply a matter of choosing "store," and this information is all set and now in the receiver, saved and ready to go. Now you just need to find your favorite movie. If you have any questions about auto calibration or tuning your system, just give Crutchfield a call. We'll be happy to help.
