About the Pioneer GM-DX971

Buck Pomerantz

Cool bass

Pioneer's handsome GM-DX971 mono subwoofer amplifier can deliver up to 1,200 watts RMS to your subwoofer, for powerful bass that'll give every song a strong and heavy beat. Highly efficient Class D technology keeps this powerful amp running as cool as it looks, and allows for a small chassis that fits in a lot of out-of-the-way spaces. And this little workhorse can handle a 1-ohm load, so you won't have to worry too much about impedance matching when you add another sub to your system down the road.

Connections and tuning for all occasions

Speaker-level inputs allow you to install this amp in a factory system with no RCA connections — the amplifier switches its input mode automatically when it detects the high-level signal, eliminating the need to run a turn-on lead to your receiver or fuse box. The amp's got a low-pass filter that lets you quickly sharpen and focus the bass to suit your vehicle's interior, and a wired remote boost that lets you control the amount of bass boost from the front seat. This limited-edition amp uses high-grade electronic parts and gold-plated RCA connections to ensure maximum performance.

Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz for full range amplifiers (in this case 20 Hz to 240 Hz), with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N). CEA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples).

CEA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output: 500 watts RMS x 1 into 4Ω
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 75 dBA (measured at 1 watt into 4Ω)

Other Specifications: (not using the CEA 2006 criteria)

  • Power Output:
    • 800 watts RMS x 1 into 2Ω (at 14.4 volts, 100 Hz, ≤1% THD)
    • 1200 watts RMS x 1 into 1Ω (at 14.4 volts, 100 Hz, ≤1% THD)
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 100 dB (at rated power output)

Auto Turn-on: When using a speaker level input, a signal sensing circuit will automatically turn the amp on and off along with the source unit. This eliminates the need for running a system remote control wire (turn-on lead).

Controls

Gain Control: The gain control is continuously variable from 200 mV to 6.5 V. When you use a speaker level input, the gain control range is from 800 mV to 16 V.

Crossover: The low-pass crossover is always engaged; it can't be bypassed. The crossover point is continuously variable from 40 Hz to 240 Hz and the slope is 12 dB/octave.

Remote Bass Boost Control: The included Remote Bass Boost control module lets you adjust the amount of bass boost from the front of the vehicle. The Bass Boost circuit is centered at 50Hz, with a variable boost of 0 dB to 18 dB. Module dimensions:

  • Width: 1¾" (2⅝ including the mounting tabs)
  • Height: ¾"
  • Depth: 1⅝" (2⅛" including knob and wiring)
Connections

Power: The power and ground connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals.

Note: The amplifier has three 40-amp fuses installed and Pioneer recommends a 150-amp fuse in-line within 12" of the battery.

Remote Turn-on: The remote connection is a set screw terminal that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: There are two pair of speaker output set screw terminals, internally shorted together so it's easy to connect two subwoofers. The terminals will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals.

Signal Input: The amplifier has a pair of stereo RCA inputs. If no preamp level signal is available, use the included speaker level to RCA adapter.

RCA Output: One pair of preamp output jacks provide a convenient way to daisy-chain an additional amplifier without running another set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the amplifier location. The output is not affected by the internal crossover.

Q
Can i run 2pioneer ib flat 4ohm 10s safely 300 rms or 3 of the same 10s?
michael  Mar 08, 2021
1 answer
A
If you have two 4ohm subs you can wire down to 2 ohms. This amp will do 800w at 2 ohms, or 400W each. You should be fine to use this amp on those subs and have a little headroom left over.
matthew  Mar 08, 2021
Q
Does this amp need a line output converter if I am tapping into the rear speakers?
john alexander  Jan 10, 2021
2 answers
A
This amp does have speaker level inputs and does not require a line output converter to be installed into some vehicles. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to check yours

Q
Pioneer says to use a 150 amp inline fuse. But all the crutchfield wiring kits have 100 amp fuses? Wouldn't that cause a short?
derek  Jun 29, 2020
2 answers
A
100 amp fuses will not usually blow at a 100 amp load. It will take about 150% of the fuse rating to blow the fuse. The fuse will protect the equipment from a dead short or short to ground.
robert  Aug 21, 2020
A
I haven't had a problem with my amp as it is. I had my system professionally installed with Crutchfield products. To answer your question. No, you would just blow the fuse.

Q
What is a good wiring kit for this amp?
tanner  Apr 30, 2020
2 answers
A
I used the Crutchfield 4ga wiring kit...works great!
gary  May 04, 2020
A
I have this amp driving two Kicker 10s I bought from here. Based on this amps output a 4ga wire kit is recommended. Crutchfield sells several with the $90 kit having everything except speaker wire in it. I would pick up a good 12ga speaker wire at least if you are going to drive subs at 1 or 2 ohms. If you don't want to use theirs I really like the wiring from Knuconceptz and amp wiring kits are similar in price. The nice thing is each of these places use OFC wiring for the power and ground.

Q
Do you need a remote turn on wire since it has signal-sensing turn-on with speaker-level inputs?
tanner  Apr 26, 2020
1 answer
A
Technically no but I believe remote is always better and cleaner. I also think preout is also better than speaker inputs. But to answer your question you do not need remote.
david  Apr 27, 2020
Q
Can I hook 2 subs to this amp?
griffen  Feb 11, 2020

Q
I have a dvc 2ohm pioneer champion pro series 12. Can i wire the sub in a 1 ohm configuration and run to one channel on this amp. Or do i have to run each coil to seperate channels to get 1 ohm?
travis  Dec 29, 2019
4 answers
A
Just wire the coils in parallel. Connect both positives together and both negatives together which will give you 1ohm and run to either connection on the amplifier. Doesn't matter which one as they are internally common.
robert  Aug 21, 2020
A
The amp has 2 outputs. They are internally connected. So it does not matter what output you use it is the same power either way. Wire the amp like it only has 1 output...because it does, they simply put 2 connections on there for convenience.
aaron  Jan 28, 2020
A
Yes, you can. Crutchfield actually has a wiring diagram, but I can't post it here. Just Google "achieve 1 ohm load with one DVC 2ohm subwoofer" and you'll see it.
matthew  Jan 28, 2020
A
I'm not sure

Q
how is the sound quality of these pioneer amps at 1 ohm?
johnny  Dec 28, 2019
2 answers
A
1ohm is great and that is what I run on mine. However just keep in mind if your gonna max out your ohms you will have slightly less if a max gain level to compensate.
david  Apr 27, 2020
A
I have it hooked up to a kicker 2 ohm and it sounds amazing!
paul  Dec 28, 2019
Q
If I have 4 speakers connected to my head unit ,will the rca connection still amplifie those speakers using this amp?
javier  Nov 04, 2019
2 answers
A
You can drive 4 subs with this amp as long as the impedence doesn't drop below 1 to .8 ohms. Remember though that this amp is for subs only. It is a mono (bass) amplifier. You can research different wiring diagrams to see what will work best for ohm rating of your subs.
robert  Aug 21, 2020
A
The RCA connections are what feeds the signal to an amplifier. The speakers then need to be connected directly to an amplfiier. With this amp, you could send a subwoofer signal to the amp, and then the amp could power 1 or 2 subwoofers. This amp would not have anything to do with amplifying full range speakers.
thomas  Nov 15, 2019 (Staff)
Q
would this amp be 1.5 ohm ?
jorren  Oct 30, 2019
4 answers
A
Hi Jorren, thank you for your question. The Pioneer GM-DX971 amplifier is 1ohm stable, so it will be capable of driving a 1.5ohm load. Chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. They will be happy to go over these specs with you, or answer any other questions you may have!
jessica  Nov 13, 2019 (Staff)
A
Yes
david  Nov 12, 2019

I think it goes down to 1.0 ohm
payton  Nov 12, 2019
A
1ohm
matt  Nov 12, 2019
Q
do I need to run a remote turn on wire if I run rca cables from my Kenwood Excelon DPX793BH?
cole  Oct 01, 2019
1 answer
A
Yes both amps need a remote turn on wire what you can do is take another piece of speaker wire and piggy back it from the other amp if that makes sense. Take the remote turn on from the head unit and splice a wire to one amp and have two wires in amp one and go to amp to and connect it. That way both amps turn off when the radio is shut of or key out the ignition. I hope I explains this well.
