More details on the Alpine KTP-445A Power Pack

Mark G.

Product Research

Features

Alpine Head Unit Power Pack: The Alpine KTP-445A Head Unit Power Pack is an easy-to-install power upgrade amplifier that allows you to add higher output and more dynamic response to your Alpine head unit. The KTP-445A amplifies your Alpine head unit's power output, resulting in a 150% power increase over the original power from the head unit's built-in amplifier.

  • If the fuse protecting the OEM radio is less than 15 Amps, you should run a separate +12V constant power wire from the battery to the higher-powered Alpine KTP-445A.
  • The Alpine Power Pack amp will not work in systems where an outboard factory amplifier is still active. If used in vehicles with a factory amplifier, the factory amp will need to be completely bypassed (this may result in lost speaker channels, if factory amp has more than 4 channels).
  • The increase in power may result in a louder warning chime in certain vehicles.

Compatibility: The KTP-445A connects to any 2005 and newer Alpine head unit that has a black 16-pin wiring harness. Please check with your Crutchfield Product Advisor to confirm compatibility.

45 Watt x 4 Channel Amplifier: The Alpine KTP-445A Head Unit Power Pack employs a 45 watt x 4 channel amplifier. The amplifier offers an unbelievably low noise floor, taking extra care to ensure a clean signal path, with no extraneous interference. The end result is a 1 Watt Signal-to-Noise Ratio of 82dB or better. Uniquely, the amplifier distortion actually decreases at higher frequencies, resulting in a clean and clear signal where your ear is most sensitive to distortion.

  • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 45 watts x 4 channels (at 4/2-ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
  • Max Power Output: 90 watts x 4 channels (Peak)

Note: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Installation: Since the KTP-445A is small and compact, it installs behind your Alpine head unit in the dash of most vehicles. Installation is simple with no special tuning. The 39" grey connector harness plugs into one end of the Head Unit Power Pack and connects to the rear plug on your Alpine head unit. The 31" black connector harness plugs into the other end of the Head Unit Power Pack and connects to your Alpine receiver's harness (included with your Alpine receiver). You will need to splice or crimp the wires from the Alpine receiver's harness to a Crutchfield vehicle harness adapter (sold separately).

Note: The factory radio circuit needs to be a minimum of 15A. If it is not, a separate power and ground will need to be installed for the KTP-445A

Q
Does it replace factory Bose amp?
kenneth  Nov 24, 2023
1 answer
A
This amp is not intended to replace a factory amp. It should only be installed into stock systems that do not have an amp. We do not have replacements for factory amps.
jason  Nov 25, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Is the Alpine KTP-445A Power Pack compatible with other than Alpine head units? I have a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB and I would like to to use this mini amp in conjunction with this head unit.
michael  Sep 16, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Michael. Thank you for your question. The KTP 445A is more of an Alpine stereo specific amplifier. It comes with direct harnesses to plug into certain Alpine stereos. Could you cut those up and still use this with a different stereo? Of course, but Alpine makes a universal KTP 445U which also comes with a low-level RCA input harness. www.crutchfield.com/p_500KTP445U/item.html

Can I connect a crossover from a component speaker to this?
dominick myan  Jun 19, 2023

Greetings Dominick, and thank you for your question. Yes, this is just like any other aftermarket amplifier. Just a more compact version.

Can I use this on my door speakers, but then still use my factory amp for the subwoofers? In 2013 Nissan Frontier with Rockford Fosgate.

A
This would not be possible. We do not recommend using this amplifier in car audio systems that include factory amplifiers.

Q
Will this work with Alpine CDA-7897?
mark p  Apr 20, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Mark, thats an excellent question. The 445A is more an Alpine specific plug in go model with much less wiring. The radio plugs on the CDA-7897 are almost dead on with a newer compatible Alpine stereo for this amp. If you choose to plug and go, one wire on your Alpine will not be connected. Maybe it matters, maybe it not even connected in your vehicle. It is the audio interrupt/cell mute wire in pin 15. Other than that plug and go.

Q
Will this work with a alpine cda 7875?
mattk  Mar 02, 2023
1 answer
A
You will want to use the Alpine KTP-445U in the link below, Matthew. The universal unit does not come with the Alpine specific plug (no guarantee it matches your older Alpine radio) and has speaker-level inputs, so you can connect it to any source. Don't forget to add the Crutchfield CK12 wiring kit in the second link below for best possible performance! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500KTP445U/Alpine-KTP-445U-Power-Pack.html

What is needed to make this amp a plug and play in my 21 jeep gladiator?
john  Jan 12, 2023

That is a great question and we would need a little more information about your particular gladiator to see if we had any t-harnesses to make that Alpine amp plug and play. If you can give us a call at 800.324.9695 one of our helpful advisors can take a look at what adapters we have available and get a get cart set up for you!

Q
I'm installing an alpine UTE-73BT and a alpine KTP-455A. My question is the after market harness doesn't have a blue remote wire. So where do I hook the remote wire too? Can I hook it into the red wire?
mark  Jul 28, 2022
1 answer
A
The UTE-73BT has a blue/white wire (pin 7) on it's harness that is the amp turn-on wire. That is what is used to turn on the amplifier.

Q
I have a 2007 silverado classic with bose, I got rid of the Bose speakers and am using kicker components in all four doors, would I have to wire around the factory bose amp to install this?
elliot  Aug 16, 2021
2 answers
A
Correct, you would have to bypass the amp and wire the speakers separate from the Bose amp.
robert  Aug 19, 2021
A
Yes, Crutchfield usually has wiring solutions to bypass Bose amp. Is your head unit aftermarket? This usually makes wiring mutch easier. At the same time there are all kinds of adaptive wiring harnesses sold by Crutchfield.

Can I add another speaker amplifier while having this power pack connected to my head unit?

Yes, the other amp could connect via the rca output jacks on your head unit. The power pack uses the speaker level outputs from head unit.

I now have a alpine cde172bt will the plug that goes to the stereo got to the amp 1st then the plug coming out of the amp fit the cde172bt stereo that I have?
john  Jan 18, 2021
1 answer
A
IT's been 2 long years since I even looked at the back of this. I honestly cannot remember how I did this. What I DO remember is that it was about the easiest install I ever performed as a retrofit in over 50 years. I installed this as a replacement for some bargain basement head unit in my 98 Grand Cherokee. The only challenge was converting the tail hatch into one that accepted speakers. The audio quality is well worth the hassle.

Q
Is this compatible with the i209-WRA? Have it in a 2015 Jeep JK.
kenny  Jul 14, 2020
1 answer
A
I'm sure it could be wired to work with your head unit since it is essentially a 4 x 50 watt amp in a small package. It has brackets so it can be perfectly mounted to the back of an iLX-W650 and still have a shallow installation depth. Forgo the brackets and you have a great amp that you can connect to your i209-WRA or any other car stereo. You just have to find a place to mount it. Considering it's small size, that shouldn't be too much of a challenge.

I have an aftermarket Alpine unit in my truck with Kicker speakers in the doors. It's plenty loud already. I'm looking for a little more base and sound quality at lower volume. Will this power pack do that?
kevin  Dec 30, 2019
5 answers
A
If you're currently powering the Kicker speakers with just your head unit, then absolutely this will give better quality sound and response at lower volumes. As for more bass, there are so many variables that influence this. However, the higher RMS rating of this amp will send more wattage to the speakers before introducing noticable distortion which should allow for you to adjust your bass levels as you see fit. Keep in mind though, if your speakers have a max RMS rating exceeding 2.5 - 3 times the max RMS of the amplifier, OR the speaker sensitivity at 1w@1 meter is on the lower end of 80-90 range, you should look for a more powerful amplifier. I have used amplifiers rated for twice what the speakers are rated for, and because the amp never clips, there are absolutely no problems. As an example, I'm still beating up the same pair of JL 12W1s since 1999 only having to replace the surround when it starts dry rotting.
antonio  Jan 01, 2020
A
The amp in itself won't give you more bass, but it will enable you to turn the bass level up without running out of power and damaging your speakers. I suggest enabling the loudness setting on your head unit. The loudness setting emphasizes the bass at lower levels and should improve your sound quality at a lower volume. Hope this helps!
duane  Dec 31, 2019
A
The power pack is good option if you are looking for a little more power and it is amazing. You will definitely notice difference in power output. As far as more bass output it will depend upon the size speaker, if you have anything smaller than 5 1/ 4inch you will not see much bass output. Also your on settings on your stereos EQ play a big part too. If you are looking for a little more bass in your truck and have room for a powered subwoofer. I would definitely go that route in my opinion a JL Audio single 8in or 10inch is more than enough.
robert  Dec 30, 2019
A
I added the unit in a Jeep Wrangler (2000 TJ) to drive fidelity across the range of low to high volume using an Alpine head unit. I was not looking for added bass. I am pleased that I got better fidelity and low distortion using this unit. I am using Polk audio speakers. Hope that helps a bit
nicholas  Dec 30, 2019
A
This unit does not change the tone of the sound coming out of your speakers, it just makes everything louder, if you want more bass in your speakers, you will need to add a subwoofer or change the EQ. However if you are using factory speakers and you start pumping more power to them with this amp, you could blow out the speakers because they are not designed to be blasted with tons of bass. If you really want better sound, then you should look at putting in new speakers and depending on how power hungry they are, adding an amp and a powered subwoofer to your system.

It is compatible with that headunit. There will be some wire connections that need to be made between the headunit harness and the vehicle integration harness. Depending on the vehicle, you may also need to run a dedicated power wire to the battery and a ground connection to the chasis. If your old Alpine amp is similar to these amp's RMS watts output and has the same number of channels as these do, then I expect the PDR-F50 amp will be able to work in place of it and be able to use the same wiring too. The KTP-445A amp only works in very specific applications that will have a compatible Alpine radio installed as well My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul
jason  May 28, 2019 (Staff)

The power pack is designed to work with alpine stereos, the pdr-f50 should be fine if you have low level outputs(RCA). If not, you will probley need a line output converter

Q
How do you mount this to the back of the iLX-650?
william  May 05, 2019
1 answer
A
The amp doesn't mount to your receiver physically (as in bolt to it). The amp has a fairly long cord that plugs in to your receiver directly. The cord allows you to mount the amp wherever it will fit under the dashboard. My van had some space above the radio with a stout bracket at the top. The power pack amp was easily secured with a few good quality zip ties (cable ties, tie wraps, what ever you prefer to call them). This amp driving (4) Kicker speakers will cleanly play very loud, much louder than I have ever explored. Stated another way - i have never maxed it out. Very satisfied with my purchase.

I bought this Alpine head unit as a replacement for a failed OEM unit and connected it to the speakers that came with the car. Coukd not be happier with the Alpine unit. As for the speakers, first find out what size your factory speakers are or what size speakers you can fit in your application, then buy the highest quality in that size that your budget allows. :)

Q
Alpine 265BT HU in a 2012 Altima, is this amp a plug and play??
tim  Sep 23, 2018
3 answers
A
Not exactly sure what plug and play means for an amp. You do not have to run power or ground if that's what you mean. If you have an alpine head unit then it's pretty easy. The wiring harness that would plug into the back of the receiver plugs into the amp and there is an additional harness out of the amp that plugs into the receiver. I believe all that worked ok. The wiring bundles are pretty big and a little difficult to hide if you have a tight location.
paul  Sep 25, 2018
A
Yes. Connect one wiring harness directly to your Alpine head unit and the other wiring harness directly to your cars speaker system. Both wiring harnesses are included and no additional wiring is required. There is no set up or adjustments necessary after installation.
thomas  Sep 24, 2018
A
Couldnt say for certain but I would expect so. I had a similar unit and it coupled right to the alpine harness, with an out that matched the older interface with the vehicle wiring. About a 30min job mounted for me

Q
Connect head unit to power pack, power pack to vehicle harness, eliminating the plug that you would normally connect to wiring harness from deck, how then does one use remote turn on from head unit and sub out?
david  Jan 12, 2018
3 answers
A
I'm not sure what your asking. I bought an alpine deck with 2 preamp outputs along with this power pack. It does connect how you explained. Deck to power pack to wiring harness of vehicle. The kit through Crutchfield gives you a wiring harness which I believe is for the deck to the power pack (been awhile) If you are planning on hooking up an amp it cannot run through the power pack. It has to run through a preamp output. If this doesn't answer your question please ask me again. I'm willing to help out in anyway I can. Maybe word the question a little different.
vernon  Jan 15, 2018
A
I still have my sub hooked up to them. Amp is separate for front and rear doors
cliff  Jan 12, 2018
A
No, you don't eliminate wire harness from deck . The Alpine amp powerpack connect directly to the Alpine radio and the Alpine radio harness connect to output side of powerpack , then the radio harness to vehicle for remote ,speakers ,etc .
miguel  Jan 12, 2018
Q
I'm considering purchasing this and an Alpine deck. It says it's "plug and play", but what kind of wiring do I need to purchase along with this Power Pack? Or will it get connected using existing wiring? Thank you.
david  Jan 04, 2018
3 answers
A
Buy it and plug it in to the alpine deck. Nothing else to buy .
jackie  Jan 05, 2018

If purchasing alpine deck with power pack it will come with wire harness to plug into alpine deck. No wires to splice.harness is about 2 ft long so power pack can be mounted under console.

if memory serves, it comes with the cable to connect from the Alpine Deck to the Power pack. It was truly plug and play. Then you get a vehicle specific wiring harness and/or power button control for your vehicle - meaning for steering wheel controls and to make the power antennae work.

I use it with my CDE 102 which is very similar and it works great. I was told by alpine that as long as the unit is 2005 and newer and has a black power harness, that the power pack works.

Hey James, I'm not sure about the 9881. I had one of those a long time ago and it was my favorite head unit. I now have a newer unit and I don't know if the plugs are exactly the same or not. I don't want to tell you it will work if I'm not 100%. I'm almost tempted to say it will but eh. They do offer a 445U, but you would have to wire it up. I wish I could help you more but I haven't seen a 9881 in a long time. ??

I installed this in my 97 Buick, I used all the factory wiring, upgrading to Rockford Fosgate speakers. I just used all the wires that came with the amp, I had no problems with distortion, even when my kid played his music loud. The harness is a bit long and required a little creative stuffing to get it to fit. Good luck
patrick  May 25, 2017

No you don't need that heavy a gauge. It's overkill. The amp isn't that demanding. I used existing gauge, 16 I think. No problems whatsoever. It is not real loud but it certainly cleans up the music. I really like mine.

If you are using it with an alpine head unit it will have direct connect plugs. No extra wire is needed
james  May 25, 2017

As I recall, there is no power connection required. Simply unplug the harness from the head unit, plug that harness into the amp, the plug the amp harness into the head unit. Done. Simple as that, and really worth the low price.

where would i hide the power pack in my fiero?
jon c  Jul 31, 2016
2 answers

Every car's dash space is different and I'm not familiar with the Fiero other than knowing that it's a midengine design. Does this mean that you have a trunk in the front and no firewall? Extend the wire harness if you need to and put the amp up there. I managed to sneak one of these amps behind the dash in my Miata. I had to use wire ties to secure it but it's in and doesn't rattle. The amp has generous wiring harness length and you should be able to find a place. The effort required to install it will be rewarded by the additional sounds you'll get from this amp. So, have you tried calling Crutchfield Support?
pat  Aug 01, 2016

I put both of them, ( ya, I bought 2 for 2 different vehicles) under the dash. I used zip ties and little hope. I used it in my daughters 2000 VW bug and my 98 Chevy pickup.

Q
How will this work with a 2016 base V6 Mustang 6 speaker stereo? Wiring?
ian  Mar 06, 2016
2 answers
A
I did a quick check in Crutchfield and it appears the 6 speaker system is (2 front door speakers + 2 tweaters) and two rear deck speakers. Typically, the tweaters are fed off of a filter from that is between the door speaker and the tweater. As such, you still have a four channel system which is what the Alpine Power Pack is designed for. So, I think the Alpine amp will work with your system. My application for this amp was in an old Jeep to power the dash speakers and overhead speakers. I used a separate amp to power subwoofers. I'll have to qualify my answer in two ways. One, simply speaking, this amp will work, is relatively easy to install and can drive your stock speakers better than the stock unit can. Two, while this amp worked ok, I don't think it has enough power to drive really deep sound at moderate to high volume levels. I would recommend deriving low level signal outputs, and put a high quality 5 channel amp and replace the speakers. If you want to take it in steps, you could install the Alpine power pact and then add a separate amp/subwoofer later. Hope this helps.
roger  Mar 08, 2016
A
If you are adding this to an existing sound system you might have problems. I installed this unit at the same time as a new Alpine radio. The wiring harness to the radio plugged right into the output of the amp, then the supplied cord plugged into the input end and into the radio. Unit was excellent, it was put into a Jeep Wrangler with the top off and had more than enough power to overcome road noise. You might have to do some creative wiring to a ford radio.

I have a 2011 Chevy traverse LS with the oem radio, I just bought Polk audio speakers to replace all the doors... I wanted to know if this amp would help or if I even need it? Would it work with the stock radio?
esteban  Mar 03, 2016

First off, there is two versions of the power pack. One is the KTP-445A for use with compatible Alpine head units. The other is KTP-445U which is universal. In your case, you want to use the universal power pack. *Will it help? Well, it's an amplifier, so it's gonna boost the power going to you're upgraded speakers and improve your overall sound and volume. (if they're installed properly) *Do you need it? Yes, if you want to experience the actual benefits of an aftermarket speaker, but they'll still work without it. *Will it work with the factory radio? It will if you hook it up correctly. I should mention that some (if not all) factory radios have a pre-programmed EQ, so the factory speakers can sound their best. In other words, they give out a modified signal, unlike an aftermarket radio which gives out a pure, untouched signal. There's products to address that, like the JL Audio Clean Sweep for example. But you should still be able to connect an Alpine Power Pack directly to the factory radio without one.

It sure will.I was limited on space and this was a perfect fit and it powered up front and rear speakers which paired well with the 2 10 inch subs. The techs at Crutchfield are amazing.Enjoy the sound.--Marty
martin  Mar 04, 2016

It's plug and play with the Alpine head unit I purchased. I do not know if it is compatible with your stock radio. The Polk speakers will add quality to your sound, it won't add power to your system. My guess is that the oem radio is sufficient to most needs. The alpine amp is just a booster, not a full blown unit. Most later model automobile sound systems already have an amp bigger than the Alpine unit.
gary  Mar 03, 2016

This amp is specifically for Alpine receivers. It will not work with any other headunit. For a universal amp, try the KTP 445U amp. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500KTP445U/Alpine-KTP-445U-Power-Pack.html

I have a 2016 Honda Accord Sport. I am leaving the factory stereo. Is there plug and play harnesses for it?
griffin  Nov 07, 2019
A
No. First of all; the Alpine KTP-445A model is for use with compatible aftermarket car stereos only. Unless you have a compatible Alpine, you'll need to use the KTP-445U model instead: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500KTP445U/item.html This power pack offers "Speaker Level Inputs" so an external Line Output Converter is not required to get the audio signal into the amp. If you decide to add a subwoofer and the amp you select does not offer the speaker level inputs, you can use the Audio Control LC2i converter to supply signal (RCA) and remote turn-on for the amp: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_161LC2I/item.html I hope that helps! I would contact a Crutchfield advisor. While I think it is designed take take in a high-level input and should work with any speaker output on a radio, Alpine says it is designed to work with certain Alpine head units from 2005 and later. Honestly, I think you'd be better off with an Alpine 4-channel amp that you can install under the seat. Most of them can take a high-level input and will have better performance than the Power Pack. With either type of amp, you still need to run a power wire from the battery, so I don't think you're saving anything by choosing the Alpine Power Pack.

There aren't any gain settings on the unit itself Travis. It's just a straight 45 watts per channel to your speakers. The best sound will be if you have speakers that are matched to that. Or closely matched. I bought an entire package from crutchfield which included four infinity speakers that are around that wattage. I prefer to always buy speakers from a company that just manufactures speakers. Infinity, Polk audio, Altec Lansing, etc. Hope this message helped. Lance
lance e  Sep 21, 2014

There are no adjustments settings on this amp. I will say that the default settings on this would be equivalent to a "high" setting on an amp that is adjustable. On my INE-S920HD head unit, before turning the head unit's gain to the lowest setting, the volume would max out at volume level 10 (the volume goes to 40 or 50). With the gain all the way down it screams at level 20. I am running this amp with eight speakers. 2 5" polk audio db501's per channel (8 speakers total at 2ohms per channel). This little amp is bomb proof, rock solid, and sounds amazing.

In my car's manual, there's a table containing instrument panel fuses (driver side fuse panel). One of fuse labelled AUDIO with 20A rating. In my CDE-123 manual, there's a connection diagram. In the back of the head unit, there's a FUSE HOLDER (10A) just beside the power supply conector. Do I have to run a separate power wire to the battery? Is it : battery -> new power cable + 15A fuse -> KTP 445A -> Head unit ?

Good Morning, My installation did not require any seperate wire to the fuse panel or battery. I connected the amp to the factory wiring and the stereo (apline) to the amp. pretty simple install.

No I did not run a separate wire, the radio power is fused. I have not had any issues.

I'm confused in which fuse does the product overview refer to? Is it the 20A on instrument panel? or 10A on the Head unit fuse holder?

EQ settings are too high probably in the bass ranges and/or your speakers aren't rated to handle that much power

You will have to bypass the factory amplifier to use this product. See the product research section on this product's page at Crutchfield's website.

I would imagine the techs at Crutchfield could answer this better than I, but I believe you cannot connect amplifiers in tandem without some seriously advanced circuitry. The Alpine power pack should take care of your needs anyways, so go ahead and disconnect your factory amp.

I baught one and i unplugged the wiring harness from the back of the stereo into the powerpack and then the powerpack to the stereo. It cannot be any easier.

Hi David, I did not get to use this product. I bought it with the guidance of Crutchfield tech support and I feel I did not get the correct advise. when I bought the unit I gave the make and model of my car with some other details. Since I had done all the rewiring for the Alpine head unit before I was told that I could just plug it in line with my set up. What they overlooked was that I already had a factory installed amp. When I installed the power pack it blew out a couple of circuit breakers because both amps were on line. I disconnected the power pack and returned it and continue to use the factory amp with the Alpine head unit and it works great. Sorry I could not be more help.

U cannot run a 2nd amp in your truck. ...short of some really fancy wiring that a electronics engineer would have to do some head scratch'n. My 99 dodge with the infinity system was a bleedn nightmare trying to hook it up. Finally, I pulled the amps(located on the speakers) replaced everything w after market wires, speakers, head unit, and amp. The good news is, you will absolutely love the sound. Best of all my trucks is the alpine amp setup. Good luck JJ
