How to choose the right Audiofrog components for your car

Insight from Audiofrog on building your audio system

Installation

The door is ready, now which Audiofrog speakers should I use?

Flaunting an impressive commitment to custom installation, Audiofrog provides the high-quality components you need to design a high-end, audiophile-quality car audio system. And they provide those components a la carte. It’s a unique approach to car audio that no brand has embraced as completely and with such passion as Audiofrog.

Why does Audiofrog sell by the speaker, and not by the system?

For the answer, we turned to Andy Wehmeyer, co-founder of Audiofrog:

“We wanted to be sure that every GB series system is optimized...we want people to build the system that best fits their application without spending money on stuff they don’t need or won’t use.”

Stuff like component systems that include passive crossover networks that you might not need because you’re planning to use active crossover networks and a signal processor. By not including extras out of tradition, Audiofrog is playing smart with their dollars and putting them toward building the best components money can buy. Hold an Audiofrog speaker or passive crossover network in your hand and you’ll see and feel what sets their products apart – there are no gimmicks. These components are built to perform.

Components of an Audiofrog system

Build your perfect system using Audiofrog's essential building blocks:

  • Tweeters — Choose either a 1" tweeter that's easier to fit or the 1-1/2" tweeter for a broader spectrum of high frequencies.
  • Midrange — Mate the tweeters to 2-1/2", 4", or 6-3/4" midrange speakers. You can also use the 6-3/4" speakers in conjunction with the 2-1/2" or 4" mids to create an incredible 3-way system. Note, however, that when you do this, the GB60's will need their own amplifier.
  • Crossovers — Audiofrog's passive crossovers are custom-designed to support the combination of tweeter and midrange speakers you select. Once you've decided on your tweeter and midrange speakers, add the matching set of crossovers.

You'll notice that Audiofrog's crossovers have model numbers specific to a tweeter/midrange combination. Each pair of crossover networks employs an optimum crossover frequency designed for the best frequency response for most speaker mounting locations. In other words, Audiofrog has done the major fine-tuning for you, providing a brain (the crossover network) that perfectly blends the sounds of its assigned tweeter and midrange driver.

Audiofrog's recommended systems

The a la carte approach should get car audio enthusiasts’ wheels rolling with ideas, and that’s just what Audiofrog is hoping. Below, Andy gives a little more insight on each crossover network system.

GB2510C component system

Why choose this one?

Improve and broaden your soundstage by installing the GB25 2-1/2" midrange speaker near the tweeter. Andy tells us, “A great 2-way system for use in A-pillars or as a center channel. The GB25 2-1/2” midrange speaker is also an easy addition to the top of many door panels."

2-way system:
  • GB10 1" tweeters
  • GB25 2-1/2" midrange speakers
  • GB2510C crossover networks

GB410C component system

The GB410 2-way system

GB410 2-way and 3-way component speaker systems

Why choose this one?

“This is a great 2-way system that fits the doors of late-model BMWs with a minimum of custom work. The 4” midrange speaker is 1-5/8” deep. Add the GB60 6-3/4" midrange speaker (with a separate amp) to make an awesome 3-way system. The 1” tweeter is easily adapted to all kinds of locations and installation procedures.”

2-way system:
  • GB10 1" tweeters
  • GB40 4" midrange speakers
  • GB410C crossover networks
3-way system:
  • Adds the GB60 6-3/4" midrange speakers (Note: the GB60's will require their own amplifier)

GB415C component system

The GB415 2-way system

GB415 2-way and 3-way component speaker systems

Why choose this one?

“This is a higher-end 4” component system that goes in BMWs with a little more work. In other cars, and with some custom work, combined with the GB60 6-3/4" midrange speakers and separate amp channels, this is the Audiofrog killer application.”

2-way system:
  • GB15 1-1/2" tweeters
  • GB40 4" midrange speakers
  • GB415C crossover networks
3-way system:
  • Adds the GB60 6-3/4" midrange speakers (Note: the GB60's will require their own amplifier)

Audiofrog's primo systems

These final three options are what Audiofrog receommends as their best-sounding options for a 2-way or 3-way speaker system. Like all of the other systems, the secret is in the crossovers, which are specifically designed and tuned to make these tweeters and midrange speakers sound their best together.

GB610C component system

2-way system with GB10 1" tweeters

GB610 2-way component speaker system

Why choose this one?

“For 2-way systems where the larger tweeter won’t fit, this is a good option. Our 1” tweeter is a better performer than many others in providing a good match to the midrange, and the crossover is designed to let the tweeter play as low as possible.”

2-way system:
  • GB10 1" tweeters
  • GB60 6-3/4" midrange speakers
  • GB610C crossover networks

GB615C component system

2-way system with GB15 1-1/2" tweeters

GB615 2-way component speaker system

Why choose this one?

“The larger tweeter is designed, along with the GB615C passive crossover network to match the high frequency response of the GB60 6-3/4" speaker. This is a big improvement over using a 6-3/4” speaker and a 1” tweeter. Many 1” tweeters can’t play low enough to provide a smooth transition, even on axis to the 6-3/4” midrange speakers. Off axis, there’s often a big hole in the response. In the reflective interior of a car, this creates a lack of midrange definition and some far-side bias in standard door locations. For custom kick panel installations, this is the primo set.”

2-way system:
  • GB15 1-1/2" tweeters
  • GB60 6-3/4" midrange speakers
  • GB615C crossover networks

GB2510 3-way component system

The GB2510 used in a 3-way component system

The ultimate Audiofrog system — the GB2510 3-way component speaker system

Why choose this one?

"The addition of this little midrange speaker between the 6-3/4” woofer (with its own amp) and the 1” tweeter as a 3-way system is a huge improvement in sound. It allows both the midrange and midbass to operate at frequencies where the dispersion from both is wide. That means that the direct and the reflected sound will be similar, which helps to eliminate the far-side bias in the midrange and makes equalization of the system much easier. This is the aim of all 3-way systems.”

3-way system:
  • GB10 1" tweeters
  • GB25 2-1/2" midrange speakers
  • GB2510C crossover networks
  • GB60 6-3/4" midrange speakers (Note: the GB60's will require their own amplifier)

I tried audio frog speakers. I didn't like them. I thought they were really expensive and they would sound great but they weren't.
