Talking on the phone while multitasking on your computer, or perhaps your smartphone itself, can be tricky business. Solution? Bluetooth headsets! And they aren’t just great for having free hands while on the phone, as I found out when I got the chance to try out the new Sennheiser VMX 200 Bluetooth Headset.

Out of the box

The VMX 200 has a wonderfully sleek and small design, which adds up to easy portability and on-ear wearing. I spent a few hours testing the comfort of this little guy and ended up forgetting that I was even wearing the device, it’s that lightweight and easy to wear.

Sennheiser includes four different rubber ear buds, giving you the ability to optimize comfort for your own ear. The VMX 200 also comes with an optional ear hook, which easily attaches to and detaches from the headset.

A USB power cable and USB plug-in converter are included for charging convenience, be it from your computer or an AC outlet. Fully charging the battery took only two hours. Over the two days I tested the VMX 200, leaving the headset on for a full nine hours both days and taking calls throughout, it never ran out of charge.

Connection first

The first time you connect the headset you have to hold down the main button until you see the LED indicator flash blue and red. From there, you go into your phone’s Bluetooth settings and search for devices, selecting the VMX 200 from the available list.

Pairing the headset with my iPhone® took less than a minute and after initial pairing I never had to go back and reconnect it. Every time I turned the headset on it automatically connected, and all I had to do pop it onto my ear and I was good to go.

This ease of connection even applied to when walking outside of the connective distance. Leaving my phone at my desk, the headset kept connection until I exited the room. Once I was out of range the device softly beeped to notify me that it had lost connection, which it continued to do until I was back within usable distance, at which point it automatically connected back to my phone. Now that’s seamless connectivity.

In control

The overall design of the VMX 200 is simple and in this case “simple” means amazingly good.

The main, power button, which also controls pairing mode, is located on the front of the device and is easy to find and utilize while wearing the headset. When you hit this button while actively connected to your phone it automatically pulls up voice control, allowing you access to your contact list to place calls. This main button will also pick up an incoming call and end a connected one.

There is also a button for volume control, located on the side of the device.

Quality calling

One of the coolest things about the VMX 200 is Sennheiser’s use of noise canceling during call time.

Inside the headset are two microphones, one near the end of the device to pick up the sound of your voice and the other towards the top to collect the ambient noise around you. With that ambient noise collected, the headset actually cancels out background noise, giving you amazing call clarity. This was a feature that I wanted to test and see just how well it worked.

I did this by standing next to a rather large, rather loud air conditioning unit outside our building, and called a friend. She said that she couldn’t hear any of the background noise - which was deafening to the point where I could barely make out what she was saying. Now imagine if that were the ambient sounds of a busy airport or the continuous hum of a commuter train? That’s a big bonus on top of hands free mobility and a must for any traveler, business or no.

Overall impressions

The Sennheiser VMX 200 Bluetooth Headset is a nifty little gadget for any traveler to have in their technological arsenal. Whether you’re taking business calls or personal ones, who doesn’t need a hands free way of communicating, with absolute clarity while they’re on the go?
