Video: AKG K840KL wireless headphones
Most of the people appearing in our videos are employees at Crutchfield. We pull in folks from around the company to share their expertise. A lot of our on-camera stars come from our Advisor Group — they help people choose the right gear via phone, email and chat every day, so they're good at explaining the products and technologies.
J.R., Crutchfield advisor and musician, tried out these AKG K840KL wireless headphones. He tells us how they sounded, and how he was able to do chores and play drums while wearing them.
J.R.: I've been listening to these AKG wireless headphones at home for about a week or so now, and I gotta tell you I'm pretty hooked on them. I've been doing a lot of housework, you know, chores: laundry, doing dishes, things like that. And where I would normally wear headphones that have a cord, these have freed me up quite a bit. It just made sort of doing these daily chores a lot easier, you know, physically easier because of the wireless headphones. And because I was at home and I had Wi-Fi, I had a good signal on my iPhone and so I was able not only listen to music that I have on my iPhone, but Stitcher radio and Pandora. I had the iPhone with me all the time. It was pretty much in my pocket so I had quick control over whatever I wanted to listen to but I never had the cable in my way so just the wireless aspect of them was really, really nice.
They also sound really good. You know, I'm a drummer, I used to work in radio, I've worn headphones all my life, so I understand that when you listen to good quality headphones you'll hear things in music you don't hear other ways, unless you have a really high-end stereo or something. But on headphones you'll hear those subtle nuances in music you don't hear any other way, and that's still true with these headphones. You don't lose that with these just because they're wireless.
So these things are pretty easy to use. You simply take the transmitter, you plug it into the headphone output of your iPhone or whatever device you want to listen to and you hit the two buttons — one on the headphone, one on the transmitter and they sync up and you're good to go. And, other than that, there's not a whole lot of controls on the headphones. There's the plus and minus button here for volume which are very easy to find and use while the headphones are on your head.
These vinyl earcups on these things are nice and soft and very comfortable. They also stayed on my head. I mean, I was doing lots of stuff. I was physical around the house. I even tried them sitting at my drum set playing drums and they had no problem just staying on my head. So I had them on for long periods of time. I even went to sleep with them two nights in a row. The battery lasted a pretty good long time. I was pretty impressed with that and just, yeah, I could wear these almost all day and not even think about it.
