Video: In-dash Navigation Roundup

Crutchfield writer Dominic Devito hits the road with five popular navigation receivers to see how they perform in the real world. The models tested include the Alpine INE-S920HD, JVC KW-NT500HDT, Clarion NX602, Kenwood DNX7190HD, and Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH.

You can learn more about the results in the companion article, "Our In-dash Navigation Roundup."

And if this has whetted your appetite for a new navigation system, find out which receivers will fit your vehicle.

So we're here in a parking lot, here in Charlottesville, and we're getting ready to test out these different navigation receivers. We're gonna program.we're gonna try to find the same destination in each of the five of them. And then once we've located the destination in all five of them, we're going to start off by following the route that they recommend — but then we're going to purposely go off route and see how each of these receivers react, see how long it takes to recalculate the route, and see which one gets us back on track the fastest.

Okay, we're going to start off with the KW-NT500HDT from JVC. We need to go to the menu and we're going to look for a point of interest. We're simply going to be looking for a nearby library, and see what it brings up. So we're gonna look.now it's brought up a whole bunch of different ones. We want to find one that's closest to us, so we found the Northside library. So that's gonna be our destination. And we hit "select" and it's gonna take us there.

Alright, next up we're going to be looking at the Clarion NX602. So we're gonna go to the menu. We're gonna find a place, quick search, library. It gives us a hundred results. And the one we're looking for that's the closest is the Northside library. It shows us on the map and we're gonna hit "go" and it's actually counting down here, but we can just hit "go" and there's the route highlighted right there.

Up next we have the Kenwood DNX7190HD, so we're gonna go to "where to," we're gonna look at "points of interest," we're gonna spell the name. We're going to type in "library," see what it finds. See there, the Northside library — shows it on the map there, and it also gives you the phone number. And we're gonna hit "go" and it's showing us a route here.

Up next is the Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH. We want to find points of interest — spell name, l-i-b-r-a-r-y. You see there, it actually eliminated the letters that you wouldn't be able to use to make it a little easier when you're using a touchscreen, so you don't hit the wrong letters. So there it found the Northside library, and it says "Press OK to proceed". It's calculating the road. And you see there, it showed the map.

And then finally we're looking at the Alpine INE-S920HD. So "find places," do a "quick search around here," l-i-b-r-a-r-y. And it found a bunch of libraries, and the one we're looking for is that one. And then you can select, it gives you a list of options, and then it gives you a whole bunch of information and then you can hit "go."

Alright, now we're going to start driving and see how well we can follow the directions, then see what happens when we go off course. So here we are at an intersection. All the navigators want us to make a left turn here, which we are not going to do. Now we're going to see what happens.

As we go through there, the Alpine immediately recalculated, followed by the Pioneer and the Clarion and the JVC. The Kenwood has, seems to be taking a little longer to make it happen. And here all of these navigators have now put us on a different route. The Kenwood seems to be completely lost at this point. Oh, there it found us. So yeah, the Kenwood is definitely taking a little bit longer.

Sort of cutting through a shopping center here and doing our best to try to lose ourselves on these navigators. They seem to be doing a fairly good job of finding us on most of them. Here we are entering the final turn to our destination. The Kenwood is actually telling you it's ready to navigate somewhere else, and then the Clarion is asking us if we've actually arrived. So we'll tell it "yes" — same thing with the Alpine as well. So here we are at our destination.

So if you have any more questions about these or any of our other in-dash navigation receivers just give us a call.
