Zak Billmeier grew up in southern Vermont and coastal Maine. After graduating from Mary Washington College with a Geography degree he still isn't sure quite what to do with, he eventually settled in the mountains of Central Virginia. He spends his free time chasing his daughter around, taking pictures, gardening and cooking. Zak traces the roots of his interest in electronic gadgets to the Casio wristwatch with a built-in calculator he received as a gift one year as a child. He joined Crutchfield's car A/V team in 2007.

We hit the road to test out the JVC KW-NT50HDT navigation receiver. Its built-in HD Radio tuner pulls in live traffic updates, helping you find a clear route to your destination. We loved its overall snappy performance, too.

Zak:
We're on the road today taking a little trip to test out the JVC KW-NT50HDT navigation receiver. The coolest thing about this one is not only does it have a built-in HD Radio tuner, but it also has a second HD Radio tuner specifically just to pull in traffic information. So when you're in a place that is broadcasting HD traffic info, it'll pull in instant updates for you along the route. It's pretty cool.

Something really cool about the navigation is that when you get close, when it's time to get off the road, it'll jump to a split magnified screen and, you know, clear up any confusion you may have with what lane to be in and that sort of thing. It's a nice handy little feature.

And what we're looking at here is another benefit of HD radio is we've got local headlines, news headlines, weather, sports info. You know we can check out the weather back home in Charlottesville-85 and clear-not too bad. So what do you want for lunch today Robert?

Robert:
I'm feeling like a burger.

Zak:
That sounds good to me.

Robert:
A big greasy burger.

Zak:
Let's go find one.

Robert:
A lot of good choices in there.

Zak:
Glory Days Grill.

Robert:
Have you been there before?

Zak:
First time for everything! It calculates the route really fast. It's a very snappy machine. I really like that about it.

Robert:
Alright, well, let's go eat.

Zak:
Right down here below the street name of the next turn is lane guidance, some lane guidance going on. It's telling you to stay on the right side of these three lanes, which is pretty helpful. We're on a three lane road here. That's another nice little touch.

Zak:
So we're at our destination and something that is pretty cool and pretty rare in a double-DIN receiver like this is we can take off the face and bring the radio with us for safety's sake.

Robert:
And here we go. Pops right out pretty easily. Take this with us and.yeah, it's unusual to see that in a double-sized receiver.

Zak:
Yeah, it's a nice safety feature when you're on the road like this.

Zak:
So that's the JVC KWNT50HDT navigation receiver. We had a lot of fun with it today. And if you have any questions about it just give us a call.
