Video: Nikon 1 J1 digital camera

Zak, Crutchfield photo enthusiast, tries out the Nikon 1 J1 hybrid camera and tells us what he thinks. He enjoys using both the Smart Capture and the Slow Motion video features. Zak also reviewed the Nikon 1 V1 camera.

Zak: Got a sneak peek at the new Nikon 1 J1 camera here. And this is part of the new Nikon 1 system which is a brand new system from Nikon. They've designed it from the ground up and it's their first new lens mount since the F mount that came out in the late fifties. It's an interchangeable lens system so you can change lenses for different effects. The lenses are obviously very small, easy to carry around, and there are three lenses available already for it. And in the near future you'll see an F mount adapter so that you can take Nikon lenses that you've already got at home and adapt them to the J1 here.

The Nikon 1 system is designed around a brand new Nikon designed sensor. It gets its name from the one inch diagonal on there. It's much bigger than the ones you'll find in point-and-shoot cameras. In fact, it's about four times bigger than most point-and-shoot sensors, and about two and a half times bigger than high end point-and-shoot camera sensors, meaning you get a little more control over depth of field in your pictures-blurry backgrounds-and better performance in low-light, and overall just improved image quality.

One feature I really liked on the J1 here is called Smart Photo Selector. It starts taking pictures when you press down half-way to focus. And then when you press all the way, it continues taking pictures. It takes a total of twenty and then decides which five are the best and keeps them for you. And then from there you can whittle it down to the best one that you want to keep. If you've ever assembled a family photo or a group, maybe a team shot on a soccer field or something like that, how often do you have somebody looking away? Somebody blinked? This is actually biased toward blink and smile detection so it's gonna keep the one with the most smiles and eyeballs in it — great for a group photo. Also great for other fleeting moments where you just want to be absolutely sure you've got the shot that you want to keep.
