Video: What is 4K TV Resolution?

4K TV resolution is the next big thing in HDTV technology, but what does it mean? Crutchfield expert Steve explains how 4K gives you 4 times the resolution of 1080p, and how that affects the detail and depth you experience as you watch.

There's been quite a bit of buzz recently about 4K. 4K TVs, 4K picture resolution. There are also 4K movie projectors. So what is 4K? It's a new high-resolution standard and it calls for roughly 4000 pixels across. That's where the 4K comes from. In the case of this TV here it's actually 3840 pixels across by 2160 pixels down. So that's exactly twice the resolution horizontally and vertically of the current 1080p TVs. We just got in our first 4K TV, but there are going to be more models coming. What there isn't available right now is 4K content. There's no commercially available in discs or anything that you can buy with 4K content. Luckily these 4K TVs have built-in up-conversion circuitry that up-converts any video signal that you feed it to 4K resolution so you can still, you know, really appreciate the quality of the picture.
