Video: Monster Power 2450 & 3650

Monster's EP IR 2450 and 3650 combine reliable surge protection with a convenient, built-in Infrared (IR) remote control system. Learn about their power protection features, and how the IR control system integrates with your gear.

Tara: Hi. I'm Tara.

Chris: And I'm Chris and we're in the Crutchfield video studio to talk to you about Monster's Power EP IR 2450 and 3650 power protection units. Now with these you really get two in one. You get power protection which is really important to safeguard your home theater gear.

Tara: Definitely.

Chris: And we're going to talk about that a little more later, but you also get something unique called Infrared or "IR" control over all your gear.

Tara: And IR control is really cool because it lets you keep all of your gear hidden away in a cabinet but still control it using your normal remote controls or universal remote. Here's how it works. Let's say you have a Blu-ray player and you want to play a movie. You hit play on your remote control and that's going to send a signal to this IR receiver and the IR receiver is the only thing that's visible outside your cabinet.

Chris: Nice and neat.

Tara: Yeah definitely. And it sends that signal, connects back to this monster unit here. From there it connects to an IR flasher, and this little end of the flasher tacks onto the front of your Blu-ray player so the signal will go from your remote all the way down to the player.

Chris: So what you can do is you can hide away your Blu-ray player, your cable box, your DVR, your home theater receiver, all of your gear for a really nice look. Hide it away in a cabinet or a closet. You can even have wooden doors and let the signal pass through. Heck you can even put your gear in another room altogether.

Tara: Yeah, as long as this IR receiver is within sight of your remote controls then you're all set.

Chris: So you get five IR flashers with each of these units. The 2450 has five IR outputs, so you can hook up five components, and the 3650 has seven IR outputs. If you want to use all seven you'll want to pick up a couple more IR flashers to go along.

Tara: That's right. And IR control is really convenient, but the main job of these units is power protection. The 2450 protects up to seven components since it has seven outlets, and the 3650 will protect up to ten pieces of gear.

Chris: So what are you getting protected from? Well, surges of course, lightning strikes, any kind of sudden interruptions in power that can really wipe out your gear altogether. But also it protects you against slow increases and decreases, those small fluctuations in voltage that over time can really, really damage your gear. You might not even know it's happening.

Tara: Yeah, because ideally you want your gear to get about 120 volts of power. And so these units will sense unsafe levels, whether it's too high or too low, and shut your gear off to keep it protected.

Chris: Right, and then once the power is back within a safe range, these units will automatically power your gear back on. Now another thing that they do is they filter the sort of dirty power that comes in from the electric company. And what that gives you is line conditioning that is going to make your picture on your TV much better, clearer, noise-free, and also the sound on your system a lot better. I know that people here at Crutchfield have taken quality power protection home and they've been really surprised and impressed by the difference that they can see and hear.

Tara: Yeah, I've heard that too. And these units take that protection a step further because each outlet is isolated from the other outlets, so when you plug in a Blu-ray player, for example, it's not going to introduce noise back into the system.

Chris: Another good example is like your receiver that draws a lot of power, is working really hard. Sometimes it can bring noise into other components that are hooked up to your system, like your TV, and what you get from that is just a grainy, fuzzy picture. No good.

Tara: No, not at all. And you can use these units too to protect all of your gear, not just your TV and your receiver. There are coaxial inputs and outputs on the back so you can connect cable, satellite and antenna. And those can be like lightning rods.

Chris: That's important, up on your roof. You also get protection for your Ethernet home network and you phone line.

Tara: Yeah, so these units are really great for people who want to protect all their gear and control it too since they have those built-in IR systems.
