NICE FIT AND LOOKS GREAT

Written by: Joe from Forks, WA on January 30, 2016

2003 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great kit that has almost everything you need with exception of experience using it. Part of the instructions are incomplete for some installations and the back support does not work well because it interferes with the stereo. The easy fix for the back support is using the existing one from the radio you are replacing if that is what you're doing.

Pros: Parts to allow almost any installation configuration

Cons: Inadequate instructions. Fitting parts and some installation details are missing.

Overall it's an ok product. There was an obvious flaw in the plastic from the manufacturer. Called Crutchfield and they stood behind the product and sent me a replacement ASAP. Very happy with customer service.

Pros: Easy to install Product backed by Crutchfield

Cons: Problem out of the package. First time it's happened, don't think it's a pattern.

remove tabs? good thing i had a HACKSAW handy. do not use factory radio din. use the plastic mounts that screw to the radio. it a much sturdier way to mount your new radio. pictures would have made it much faster. i had to disassemble and really look at how it was going together.

Perfect fit into a 1999 Ford Explorer. Assembly of the side brackets was tricky, and the instructions were no help at all, but when all was done, it was solid and fit.

Pros: Great fit & Finish

Cons: Tricky to assemble the side brackets - they are plastic, and will break if forced, yet pressure must be applied to get them to snap into place. The instructions gave no info how to do this - had to guess from the pictures (good thing I've assembled a bunch of model cars).

As always, these dash install kits are great! I've installed one on my dad's F250, one just recently on my F350 and will be installing one soon in my wife's F250. VERY easy to install comes with instructions if needed for your first time installing the kit. On a difficulty scale of 1-10 it's a 0.01. I will only buy from Crutchfield, have been a long time customer and still coming back.

Pros: VERY quick and easy to install, comes with all parts necessary to install.

2004 Ford Excursion
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2004 Ford Excursion. The dashboard trim piece is held in place by 2 screws above the factory radio and a bunch of spring clips. This is held in by 6 spring clips That Can Only Be Released From The Back. So if you install this with the 2 screws in place, there is no way to remove either the trim panel or the radio without breaking something. After install, I realized the best install is probably to put the storage area above the aftermarket radio and drill access holes for the dash screws, which can then be accessed with an offset screwdriver.

Pros: Fits well.

Cons: Instructions/warnings/options incomplete.

This unit worked in my 2008 Ford Ranger perfectly. I've read other reviews that claim it "didn't fit" their Ranger, and that it was "wobbly" after installation. It says on the FIRST PAGE of the instructions for this that you have to file down a couple plastic fit nubs that are required for other model cars in order to use this unit in a Ford Ranger. It took about 1 minute to file them off and it installed with no wobble. READ THE DIRECTIONS, PEOPLE!

Not a good match for a Pioneer head in a Ford Escape

Written by: Motoguy from Blaine, WA on September 16, 2015

2007 Ford Escape
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've installed 6 Pioneer receivers in various of our family's cars, all bought from Crutchfield and all installed using the supplied installation kits. This is the first one I've had a problem with . The (heavy) Ford factory CD unit is supported at its lower edge by a nylon "slider" that rides on a "track" in the dash. This mounting kit includes a piece that should provide this function BUT it cannot be fitted to Pioneer head unit I bought (there is no place on the Pioneer to attach it). It took me a few hours of "chair and stare" to figure out how to re-purpose the factory support for use with the new Pioneer unit. Very unlike Crutchfield-supplied install kits to leave me in a bind like this. It all works fine now but the delay and fiddly work involved was annoying.

Pros: Very complete kit. Thorough, well-written instructions

Cons: Critical rear support as supplied could not be used with the Pioneer head unit I bought.

how crazy excited can you get about an install kit. It worked pretty good, we had a few problems getting it in right but eventually figured it out. not the best directions.

Pros: it fit

Cons: it took several tries to get it in correctly, and we had to "rig" it behind the dash

Well, it worked

Written by: Vash744 from Ohio on September 8, 2015

2000 Ford Ranger
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The instructions are missing a few of the finer details. You can figure it out by trial and error however. Installation was for an early 2000 Ford Ranger.

Pros: Pretty cheap considering most kits go for $15+. Matched my radio and dash pretty well.

Cons: Some of the plastic tabs that is supposed to hold the radio in the dash broke off before I could get it into the dash, making it useless for actually keeping the radio in the dash. Cheap plastic or maybe due to being made to fit multiple vehicles, who knows. Had to use the mounting sleeve on the radio to keep the radio in the dash.

FMK-550 Kit

Written by: Greg from Connecticut on August 16, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since the old kit somehow broke and I needed to replace the it, I was glad that there was still a few around. Did a reinstall with the new kit and it fit like a glove, with the helper bracket that I should have used to help the back of the radio be supported and slide on the factory rail.

Pros: fits in the same opening as the old one.

Cons: Doesn't fit the dash contour, but it does fit. instructions are a bit confusing as to break off one of the tabs. I think that it would make it weaker as to staying in the dash.

2002 Ford Ranger
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I gave it 4 stars because in the end it generally worked, looks fine in place in the dash and was FREE with my order.

I didn't give it 5 stars because in my application (2002 Ford Ranger) the built in cubby slot is useless as anything you put in it will fly right back out the moment you accelerate forward. Also, I never was able to get it to fully latch into place in the dash even after removing the "nubs". That said, it solidly stays in place even while driving faster than normal over extremely rough terrain (plowed field, washboard surface gravel roads with potholes,...). So all in all I'm not really complaining even with its shortcomings.

Pros: As already mentioned.

Cons: As already mentioned.

Overall good quality. I would have given 5 stars except I was a little annoyed that it was not a complete kit. For my vehicle the instructions say to use a piece of backstrap to secure the head unit. Like I should just have a piece lying around... Maybe a professional install shop would, not the average DIY consumer.

Pros: Fit nicely and looks good.

Cons: Missing back-strap, so the unit is loose until you can get some.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adaptor plate works... I am simply glad they still had this for such an old car as mine. It not perfect and you need to fiddle with it a bit but it simply does the job of adapting the newer radios to these old ford style 2 din openings.

Pros: I was able to put in the radio I wanted. Very cheap in cost.

Cons: Its not a perfect fit as it uses simple plastic molded clips along the edge to hold it into the original opening. Some clips would not grab leaving the adaptor plate moveable. I found that I was able to push down more of the din sleeve tabs for the radio itself and they grabbed onto the original opening in the spots that needed to be secured.

Install kit challenged

Written by: PZ from New York on April 23, 2015

2010 Ford Ranger
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The kit is not really compatible with a 2010 ford ranger truck dash. The instructions were completely wrong and the soft plastic prongs broke as I followed the directions to install. The plastic side pieces wouldn't fit, and the metal sleeve did not have bendable prongs in the right places to secure it to the plastic frame. The cheap plastic prongs broke on the main frame. .A call to tech support informed me to install it completely backwards from the printed instructions. I did, but the install is not secure. This is a truck, and it needs a positive attachment, not ill fitting plastic prongs.

Pros: It's black.

Cons: Does not hold radio in dash. Install instructions completely wrong for the ranger.

used kit on 2000 ford F 250. this kid is a generic single din kit that replaces a dual din. although the kit fit inside the space needed for the stereo I was not pleased and would not order again after hafting to modify the mounting for the stereo. I would still recommend purchasing connectors and stereos from Crutchfield, however in this situation the mounting kit was too generic and did not fulfill my needs correctly.

Pros: None

Cheap plastic. Had to make a small cut to get it to fit. Snaps into place, but the side clips are small and don't really hold all that great. The rear support sticks up into where the radio goes, so its either cut it off or leave it off. The small little cubby space just looks like a dust collector.

Pros: It works, sort of.

Cons: If there was an alternative I'd buy it.

This installation bezel does fit (Ranger pickup) very nicely, looks great. The actual final push in of the unit to clip it in took much more force that I thought. It just wouldn't clip in the opening with a normal push. I finally pushed really hard, thinking I would break it, and it finally clipped in place. Once that was done it looked great. I wasn't sure how many of the nubs to grind off for the Ranger pickup, there were a few more nubs than shown on the diagram. The bezel had a removable faceplate that wasn't addressed in the instructions. My Sony radio bezel was used instead, but either would have worked.

Pros: Converts double din to single din. Fits well.

Cons: Instructions a bit lacking, but good enough to get through it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ultimately everything worked out fine and it was an easy install, after I got more information. Crutchfield Tech Support is pretty awesome, too. But this adapter--it's like the instruction think they flow easily from one task to the next, but they really don't. For instance, it does not say to put it all together and put the radio in it before putting it in the dash. I thought, logically, you put the adapter kit in, and then hook the wires up, and then push the radio in. If you try to do it like that, the adapter is loose, and I thought there was something wrong. I think it's because the instructions cover all possible vehicles that can use it, but still, some clarity would have saved me a lot of frusttration

Pros: Awesome, clean fit. looks good.

2002 Ford Expedition
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought my 2002 Ford Expedition at an Insurance auction recently. The story behind my SUV is that it had been stolen from the previous owner and a "sound system" had been pulled out of the dash and back area by the thieves. The perpetrators destroyed the part of the dash board structure where the radio goes. I went to my local "Pick-Your-Part" and was able to find replacement parts. Now to match up the Ford dash parts to the American International FMK-550 In-dash Receiver Kit for a perfect fit. I sanded an eighth of an inch from the front square face of the dash bracket and then just needed to trim with a Dremel type tool, two small areas from the receiver kit. It all fit snug. to finish I epoxied the receiver kit to the dash bracket then install the radio sleeve. This has made for an extremely solid fit.

Pros: Overall the American International FMK-550 In-dash Receiver Kit was a good fit even without my adjustments. I was able to get "factory installed" results. Crutchfield's easy to follow installation guild was a real asset.

Cons: No negative aspects

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Directions for installing this kit were vague, but a call to Crutchfield's expert tech line got me going in the right direction. Turns out that I didn't need several pieces for my install. (2003 Ford Explorer) Once everything was in, the install looked pretty clean. Thanks to Crutchfield's expert tech support !

Pros: Nice fit

Cons: Vague directions

Install looks good, but.......

1999 Ford Crown Victoria
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first one I received with my head unit was broken in shipment. It was promptly replaced by the folks at Crutchfield. The install was pretty straightforward, but the fit was less than great. The clips, or "barbs," that secure the mount do not latch at the bottom of the dash opening. The mount tends to move quite a bit; a little less once the head unit is in place. It was free, after all, and it seems to work OK and is not all that noticeable unless I really press a button harder than I should. I will probably be looking to replace this mount with something by Metra, but until then I'll make good use of the JVC remote. :o)

Pros: Low cost; easy installation

Cons: Poor fit, not secure; easily damaged

As usual with universal parts for multiple applications, the instructions are adequate, but just barely.

Pros: Installed okay with little drama.

Cons: The instructions for turning out the tabs on the receiver tray are inadequate.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The kit was very simple to install in my 2003 crown Victoria. It comes with step by step model specific instructions. It accommodates the Sony explode receiver that I put in perfectly. My dash is whole once again thanks to the crutch field team.

Pros: It has a cubby whole that is big enough to store my iPhone in while I have it plugged in for radio apps or speaker phone.

Cons: The cubby whole is only able to fit on top of my radio when applied in my make and model.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

find the page with your particular vehicles directions. installation is very simple. it just snaps in place in ford trucks. however thats its downfall as well, other than four little plastic tabs snapping it into place, nothing "secures" your radio in place.

Pros: fits well, looks good in dash

Cons: does't give you a "warm fuzzy" feeling that the radio is secured in the dash

Easy to install

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have used a few mounting kits from Crutchfield over the years and I think this one was probably the easiest of all of them to install.

Pros: Easy installation, several ways to vary depending on your vehicle.

Cons: None that I found

Not much to say here, once I got it figured out about 90% there was still something that didn't want to cooperate. Well, when all else fails, just beast mode. I did, whatever needed to snap off did and the unit was in nice and snug.

Pros: Perfect fit, no screws needed

Cons: the instructions did virtually nothing for me, not easy to understand but it works....and that's what matters.

2003 Ford Mustang
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this frame as part of a kit to install a new Sony head unit in my '03 Mustang. Very happy with the Sony and all the other install components except this bit. The instructions were not very clear (they were aimed at covering multiple models of vehicle without going into a lot of detail on any AND the printing was very faint and hard to read) and the individual parts just did not fit together as described. this is not my first time round the block at this sort of thing so i am quite prepared to consider i was doing something wrong but am pretty sure i wasn't. in any case, after a few modifications and tweaks (which the instruction suggest you might need to do without being specific) i was installed and does the job. Just ended up being a lot my difficult than expected,

Pros: Does the job of housing the stereo and provides a pocket/shelf for the iPod.

Cons: Poor instructions, needed modification, harder to install than expected.

Easy install

Made installing my new radio in a Windstar easy. The kit that Crutchfield supplied worked great. Installed new radio completely in about 45 minutes.

Pros: Works.

Cons: It is a universal kit for many types of Fords. Just read the instructions carefully. Not a Con, just a heads-up!
