Good value, not for the faint hearted

Written By VS, Albuquerque, NM on Friday, October 17, 2014

This was the install kit for a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X598 in a 97 Crown Victoria. It eventually worked very well. The instructions with this were fairly basic and minimal which made it more difficult to install for a beginner. It was only due to past tinkering abilities that I was able to install using this unit.
Pros:
Simple.
Cons:
Instructions are not that clear. Crutchfield didn't seem to provide extra instructions to make this easier for my car, unless i missed them. I would suggest Crutchfield create a PDF instruction set for this that matches the receiver and automobile, if they have time.

Instructions needed for instrustions

Written By Oldestgenxer, St Louis, MO on Thursday, October 02, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ultimately everything worked out fine and it was an easy install, after I got more information. Crutchfield Tech Support is pretty awesome, too. But this adapter--it's like the instruction think they flow easily from one task to the next, but they really don't. For instance, it does not say to put it all together and put the radio in it before putting it in the dash. I thought, logically, you put the adapter kit in, and then hook the wires up, and then push the radio in. If you try to do it like that, the adapter is loose, and I thought there was something wrong. I think it's because the instructions cover all possible vehicles that can use it, but still, some clarity would have saved me a lot of frusttration
Pros:
Awesome, clean fit. looks good.
Cons:
Needs to have more clearly written instructions.

ruined by unclear instructions / 2000 Lincoln TownCar

Written By ray, Whittier, ca on Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Because the instructions were not clear, regarding trimming kit to fit, I ended up trimming off the wrong pieces. Not only does the kit not fit right (screen is pivoted up and gets major glare) even if I got it t to fit, will now not 'lock' into dash. Not my first time installing a head unit.
Pros:
Pre assembly was easy
Cons:
Instruction regarding trimming to fit

Good, snug fit

Written By Wooter, Utah on Friday, August 15, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Kit snapped in to my 2003 F150 with a great, snug fit. Positional wise it is a little low in the stock opening (a small gap at the top, slightly under the bezel beneath). Perhaps if it were mounted with the shelf above the unit it would be positioned better, but I put the shelf below the unit.
Pros:
Snug, snap in fit
Cons:
A little low

American In-Dash Receiver Kit

Written By TS, Freehold, NJ on Friday, August 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the kit to install a used radio for my 99 Ford F-150. Even though my radio was older and discontinued, Crutchfield had the specs on the radio and were able to match the radio, kit and truck. The kit and the included directions were very easy to use. The radio fits perfectly with this kit.
Pros:
The directions and kit were very easy to use. My 14 year old daughter and I had the old radio out and the new one installed in under an hour.
Cons:

Main appearance bezel fit properly and looks good. All the little pieces associated with fitting the new radio into bezel did not fit well/ tight. I ultimately gave up and until I have more time to make this install correct.

Nice fit of the appearance bezel. Looks factory.
Cons:
Not actual pictures to assist installation, only drawings.

Written By Zaigoat, Northern NJ on Wednesday, July 09, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a cinch to install,...and to think I was going to pay a big box retailer to do it! ...Haha,... the only thing is the directions,... kinda cryptic if ya ask me,... didn't say anywhere in there that you need to discard the metal dash kit thing that came with the Sony radio,...took me awhile to figure that one out!!

I drilled a 5/8" hole in the rear of the "pocket" so as to feed the female USB from the rear of my unit,..now the iPod stays there and I can plug a thumb drive in on the face of the unit if I want..
Pros:
Great for the price...free from Crutchfield with my purchase...
Cons:
Revamp the install instructions please...

You can do adjustments to make it exact.

Written By Matthew R, Edendale, CA on Friday, June 20, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought my 2002 Ford Expedition at an Insurance auction recently. The story behind my SUV is that it had been stolen from the previous owner and a "sound system" had been pulled out of the dash and back area by the thieves. The perpetrators destroyed the part of the dash board structure where the radio goes. I went to my local "Pick-Your-Part" and was able to find replacement parts. Now to match up the Ford dash parts to the American International FMK-550 In-dash Receiver Kit for a perfect fit. I sanded an eighth of an inch from the front square face of the dash bracket and then just needed to trim with a Dremel type tool, two small areas from the receiver kit. It all fit snug. to finish I epoxied the receiver kit to the dash bracket then install the radio sleeve. This has made for an extremely solid fit.
Pros:
Overall the American International FMK-550 In-dash Receiver Kit was a good fit even without my adjustments. I was able to get "factory installed" results. Crutchfield's easy to follow installation guild was a real asset.
Cons:
No negative aspects

Directions for installing this kit were vague, but a call to Crutchfield's expert tech line got me going in the right direction. Turns out that I didn't need several pieces for my install. (2003 Ford Explorer) Once everything was in, the install looked pretty clean. Thanks to Crutchfield's expert tech support !
Pros:
Nice fit
Cons:

Install looks good, but.......

Written By SirJeffro, Raleigh, NC on Tuesday, June 10, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first one I received with my head unit was broken in shipment. It was promptly replaced by the folks at Crutchfield. The install was pretty straightforward, but the fit was less than great. The clips, or "barbs," that secure the mount do not latch at the bottom of the dash opening. The mount tends to move quite a bit; a little less once the head unit is in place. It was free, after all, and it seems to work OK and is not all that noticeable unless I really press a button harder than I should. I will probably be looking to replace this mount with something by Metra, but until then I'll make good use of the JVC remote. :o)
Pros:
Low cost; easy installation
Cons:
Poor fit, not secure; easily damaged

American international FMK-550 in dash receiver kit

Written By Dale R, Byers, Co on Saturday, May 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The kit was very simple to install in my 2003 crown Victoria. It comes with step by step model specific instructions. It accommodates the Sony explode receiver that I put in perfectly. My dash is whole once again thanks to the crutch field team.
Pros:
It has a cubby whole that is big enough to store my iPhone in while I have it plugged in for radio apps or speaker phone.
Cons:
The cubby whole is only able to fit on top of my radio when applied in my make and model.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

find the page with your particular vehicles directions. installation is very simple. it just snaps in place in ford trucks. however thats its downfall as well, other than four little plastic tabs snapping it into place, nothing "secures" your radio in place.
Pros:
fits well, looks good in dash
Cons:
does't give you a "warm fuzzy" feeling that the radio is secured in the dash

Not much to say here, once I got it figured out about 90% there was still something that didn't want to cooperate. Well, when all else fails, just beast mode. I did, whatever needed to snap off did and the unit was in nice and snug.

Got it to fit but...

Written By Anonymous, LA, Ca on Monday, April 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this frame as part of a kit to install a new Sony head unit in my '03 Mustang. Very happy with the Sony and all the other install components except this bit. The instructions were not very clear (they were aimed at covering multiple models of vehicle without going into a lot of detail on any AND the printing was very faint and hard to read) and the individual parts just did not fit together as described. this is not my first time round the block at this sort of thing so i am quite prepared to consider i was doing something wrong but am pretty sure i wasn't. in any case, after a few modifications and tweaks (which the instruction suggest you might need to do without being specific) i was installed and does the job. Just ended up being a lot my difficult than expected,
Pros:
Does the job of housing the stereo and provides a pocket/shelf for the iPod.
Cons:
Poor instructions, needed modification, harder to install than expected.
