Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Its not bad for what it is but I was hoping it would help the radio blend in with the rest of the car, which it didn't at all. It actually made it look more out of place because it causes it makes the unit stick-out a bit eventhough there was more than enough space behind it..

Pros: Made a single-din radio fit a 1.5 din space

Cons: Does not blend in with the car. Could benefit from some recessed adapters/faceplate

It is nice and straight forward. Pick the correct front for your car and radio, bend the tabs to hold it in and your ready to go. Holds the radio nicely and looks good.

Cons: You always end up with extra parts that you can use.

This thing makes a 1 din radio fit in like it would have from the factory. Gives everything a nice, clean look. The instructions were a bit difficult to understand but when I compared it to my old factory radio things came together fairly easily. I like that it comes with different plates to poke the radio out a bit if space is needed.

Pros: -Looks nice -Comes with plates to make it poke out if needed

Cons: -Instructions are a little hard to understand

Although the instructions didn't really tell me much for my specific make and model, I still rate this 5 stars. The in-dash reciever kit worked great after I figured it out. No issues at all whatsoever with the product itself.

Pros: Works great, price was good, pretty easy to figure out even with the lack of instructions provided for MY specific make and model. Just a simple puzzle piece that you need to put together. Watch a few YouTube videos and you'll have it all figured out.

Cons: Insutrctions sucked, but no big deal.

1990 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight Royale
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Biggest problem I had with this kit is if you are using an older unit that you have been swapping in and out of vehicles and you do not have the DIN mount that came with said unit you are fabbing up brackets. This means you are under the dash a lot longer placing unit in and out to try to make it look as good as possible. Would like to have found a face plate that had a small pocket in it, they had plenty of room to mold one into it. But hay for the price and I was able to find something for a 1990 Oldsmobile 88 Royale I should complain.

Pros: Cheap

Cons: No bracket options with kit, no pocket

1993 Cadillac DeVille
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have used this kit in other applications and already knew the "tricks" to getting it installed. Fit was perfect after I trimmed off 2 alignment tabs on the car's lower radio bracket that prevented its installation on the kit's chassis support cage. The installation instructions (diagrams) still need to be improved on this product to eliminate questions by the user.

Pros: Nice look and finish that goes well with most interiors. Completely covers the 1.5 DIN GM radio bay when installing a 1 DIN head unit.

Cons: Poor instructional materials. Had to be modified for my application.

Leaves things to be desired

1989 Chevrolet Astro
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This item comes with everything but aftermarket brackets. The Crutchfield website clearly states that the mounting brackets from the factory stereo are required for proper installation. This item should just come with plastic replacement brackets as we did not have the original stereo and the item is dealer only, that of which is not stocked or manufactured anymore.

Pros: Comes complete as described and functions as intended ONLY when the factory brackets are present (from the original stereo, if you have it still).

Cons: Does not include plastic replacement brackets. This item auto ships from Crutchfield and was a waste of Crutchfield's time, money and shipping costs to send this item to me even though we knew ahead of time that it wasn't going to be sufficient to mount the radio since the factory brackets were missing.

Made for a very clean fit in a double din size opening. I was somewhat unsure during the assembly, but the finished product fit was great. Take your time, the instructions that come with it are very vague

Pros: Fit my car (Late 90's GM) like it was made for it specifically.

Cons: Has parts for more than one application and instructions are very vague.....even for someone who was an auto tech for 20+ years.

The brackets to mount this kit to the dash are not included and they say to use the ones off of the factory stereo....that doesnt work when the factory stereo was pulled out years ago.

While the adapter kit worked quite well, the instructions were just about useless. They gave some direction but you were pretty much on your own to figure out the installation. I have used Crutchfield installation kits on several radio projects and have found them to be explicit and readily followed by the most inexperienced installer. Not so this GM kit. As I said, once you figure it out, the kit works and looks great, just be prepared to spend some grey cells trying to figure it out. If you're not good at problem solving, you might want to pay someone else to install this kit.

The only issue I had with this was some minor flashing had to be trimmed off with an exacto knife. (Flashing is the super thin pieces of plastic which leak out bewtween the mold halves). This was not a big deal at all - almost all plastic injection molded parts have flashing. Other that that, I don't know if you could ask for a better way to mount your new head unit!
