Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm by no means a pro but have been doing custom installs since 1992. Fits like a glove. Very easy to install. Didn't even use the extended bracket for the front. Just remove the back stopper for standard size aftermarket radios.

Pros: Flush fit. Ease of install. Professional look.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This in dash kit is alright, but only because it was free. If I paid for this separately from the HU i would have been pretty mad because I did have to shave off part of the screws in order for it to actually fit in the dash. All in all, I'd buy a different in dash kit for next time, but it was free so I can't complain too much.

Pros: Free

Cons: Installation was more work than it should have been.

American International CGM-390M Dash Kit

Written by: Brian from Windsor, VA on February 20, 2013

The hardware that comes with the kit does not match what is listed in the instructions. The carriage bolts that come with the kit are 4 half inch, wat is supposed to come with the kit are 4 3/8 inch and 4 3/4 inch. For my wifes 02 camaro, the shorter carriage bolts are needed not what was incorrectly delivered. I spoke with Crutchfield, they sent a new kit but it contained the same wrong hardware.

Crutchfield response on April 18, 2013 After receiving your review we checked with the manufacturer of the kit. It appears that they were missing the correct hardware, and they have sent us the pieces to correctly update all the kits we have in stock.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good kit for the price (free with the radio). Surprised that they warned the radio would stick out 1 inch. Found the flat face adapter to be the correct fit. Also found it easier to attach everything to the faceplate first, then insert in the dash so the back support fits right in. Agree with the other review, had to grind down the threads on the side screws to make it fit in the hole (five seconds). Used a bench grinder, a file would take all day.

Pros: fits correctly once the right faceplate is chosen and the side threads are ground flat.

Cons: Not impressed with the instructions. Too generic, had to pick and guess which faceplate to use.

Install kit for 1993 - 2002 Camaro

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was Free with the radio so i cannot complain too much.

If you are using this for a 1993 - 2002 Camaro you will need a dremel tool to shave off the excess threads for the mounting screws for the side tabs. After mounting the tabs to the main box with the supplied bolts you will have to trim off the exposed threads as close to the nuts as possible. I used a dremel tool for this. I guess you could use a file but it will take longer.

Pros: it was Free

Cons: Read my review

2001 Chevrolet Camaro
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this on recommendation from Crutchfield. I struggled all morning trying to get this to fit my 2001 Camaro and ended up braking the side brackets. Went and bought another brand and it took less than half an hour to install my new radio and it looks perfect.

Pros: NONE

Cons: Would not fit the opening.

It Works but not Great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

just like the previsous review stated, because the bolts that join the angle bracket to the sleeve protude past the sleeve it was required to file or remove material from the dash to make clearance, not a big deal though because this is behind the trim piece, other than that there are no bolts that hold the radio in place and there is no way to use bolts easily, all you can do is bend up the metal tabs on the HU Sleeve, I'd much rather bolt it in, afterall all HU's are designed with holes in the sides for mounting Bolts!!!! Also I was given 2 diffent angle brackets for left/right, I had to drill a hole in one to mount the radio level.

In the end, the kit looks nice in the dash, if I were to do it again, I would go ahead and use the 1" offset sleeve instead of the 1/2" as recoomend by crutchfield, it is kind of tight with the 1/2". Cruthfiedl noted that the factory rear HU support needed to be removed, that is impossible because it is a soild steel piece built into the frame of the car, I would reccomend to jus tuse the 1" spacer instead. I didn ot wan tto destroy the support since I may return the fctory radio to the car later

Prepare to Cut

1998 Chevrolet Camaro
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received this kit as part of my Crutchfield bundle. Installing this on my 1998 Camaro, I had to cut the dash to make this work. Here's the problem: two pieces attach to each side of the mounting bracket. these pieces are what then screws in to the dash where your previous receiver screwed in. The kit really should have been one piece. Because the nutt/bolt assembly for the sides of the bracket sticks out past the dash opening. So you have to cut and drill to make it fit. Now, this isn't something you will see once you have your trim back up, but this seemed needless. If I hadn't been in a hurry, I would have gotten something else once I realized this wouldn't work as advertised. I saw previous poster's review, but I thought maybe his problem was that he had a 1997 and I knew they made some changes to the interior in 98.

Stereo sounds good and the kit blends in with the interior pieces, but having to cut really soured me on this one.

had to cut my dash to make clearance

Written by: Chuck from St. Louis, MO on August 10, 2009

The kit that was "for" my car, a 1997 Camaro, needed a lot of massaging. I am a mechanical engineer with previous 5 years as a helicopter mechanic so I am very competent mechanically. The bolts that hold the mounting brackets on the base are too long and stick out to the side prohibiting fitment. Even though I had to cut down the length of the bolts flush with the nuts and I still had to cut a 1/2 in. hole in the driver side where the radio mounts and also another 1/2 in. worth of material from the opposite side. None of the 'modifications' can be seen after installing the trim around the climate and radio controls though. I did not want to waste any time trying to get a kit that would fit with less modifications; the previous radio was also aftermarket with an installation kit that required no modifications. The new radio did not fit the old installation kit though. And I don't really car about this car anyways. The instructions are slim but a little common sense (or experience installing a few radios in my case) can also be used to get your way through the mounting installation kit. The kit did fit snuggly around the receiver and does seem to be study enough to last a while. If the mounting hardware was changed to alleviate the clearance issue then this kit would be ok.
