Best I can say is that it ended up working OK.

Well, it worked in the end. Instructions were HORRIBLE. Very unclear on what tabs needed to be cut or not. Had to re-drill mounting holes to fit double DIN receiver mount holes. Very unclear on what pieces were needed for my vehicle. Pretty much made it up as I went.
Pros:
Kind of worked, with modifications.
Cons:

Works Just Fine, Once You Figure Out Your're Better Off Not Reading th

Written By k, Sacramento, CA on Friday, October 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product itself worked just fine, once you figure it out. The reason I gave 3 Stars is simply because of the instructions. Turned what should have been a 1 hour deck install to 3 hours, just because you have no idea which section actually applies to your vehicle, and are paranoid you're going to clip the wrong tabs off. Obviously they are trying to make this product fit every vehicle manufactured since 1932, but the instructions don't live up to that goal - a blind monkey could have done a better job. "Cut all the tabs OFF". "No, don't cut all the tabs off". "Cut the tabs off the side brackets NOT shown above" - what?! Did the graphic artist take the day off when that section was written?

You're better off just looking at the bracket and face pieces, seeing what mounting holes your have on your dash, and then clipping off what doesn't belong.
Pros:
Does what it supposed to do; deck doesn't rattle around.
Cons:
Instructions are severely in need of re-writing, with graphics that more clearly show what tabs are to be cut. Or just make bracket kits for each Make of vehicle, with instructions that are clear, rather than trying to match every vehicle on the planet with one bracket kit.

Cheap plastic look.
Pros:
Better than nothing.
Cons:
Requires extensive modification to fit your vehicle. Kit not specific for vehicle. Spent lots of time cutting off extra plastic pieces for other models. Terrible instructions. Cheap 1980's finish. Recommend the install kit that starts with "S" instead.

Worked well.

Written By ShaneB, Missouri on Tuesday, September 09, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to give it 5 Stars but one of the side pieces wouldn't clip on properly and I have to ding the review for that. One side clipped on, but the other side wasn't molded properly and I couldn't get it to clip in place. I finally gave up and just put it in with it bulging a little. You can't see it once the dash is in place covering it and it looks really nice. It looks like a pro did the installation and I'm proud of how it all came out.

For free(ish) I really can't complain.
Pros:
1. It looks really nice once installed. 2. It mounted perfectly with no adjustment hassles at all. 3. The plastic is very sturdy.
Cons:
It's hard to remove the unused mounting plates. Although that's a good thing, I kind of deformed the piece of plastic I needed when I cut the unused parts off. So when you do this, score it first with a Stanley knife on both sides then use some heavy wire cutters to cut along the score marks. That's what I did, or you could use a Dremel cutting tool.

Dash mounting kit

Written By Justme, Albuquerque, NM on Saturday, August 23, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well one needs something but this is just cheep plastic. The screws supplied didn't fit, so I had to supply my own. Much modifying was needed. Instructions on how to attached must have been for some vehicle from Mars. I was on my own. I can only hope it holds the unit. Crutchfield needs to find a different kit for a GMC canyon. Usually Crutchfield's information on how to do is much better than this.
Pros:
It filled the gap between the radio and auto dash.
Cons:
Nothing worked without modification.

The dash kit itself fits into a 2004 Alero, but you are going to have to figure out how it fits yourself. The instructions are pretty much useless, but after removing some extra tabs it did fit correctly.
Pros:
Fit into the hole of where the old double stack stereo was and now hold a smaller stereo.
Cons:
Instructions were absolutely worthless

This product fit when others did not. The instructions were a little confusing but the Crutchfield tech services walked me through the fit process. Match the side tabs to your factory unit and remove all others carefully with a fine tooth hacksaw.
Pros:

Cons:
cutting the pieces off that you did not need was confusing.

Pros:

Simple once figured out...

Written By JP, North Augusta SC on Sunday, August 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put this into a 2003 Avalanche. Useless instructions can be replaced by: The two side mounts are not the same. Look at your factory stereo and match up the plastic tabs with the ones on your stereo. Cut off all the other tabs. Snap the sides into the rectangular cover piece(takes a bit of a push to get the two side tabs into their slots but should lock in straight) and mount to your new stereo (I was able to get three screws per side to fit). The Crutchfield notes on here state that the back metal mount would have to be cut out of my truck to put a KW-V200BT but I decided to see how close it really was. It was tight but all three screws tightened down and the factory trim went back on so that it looks extremely nice.

Fitting a GMK-422

Written By shadetree, Iowa on Monday, July 28, 2014

This kit did the job resulting in a clean nice look with no gaps or voids.
Pros:
Looks as a factor installation.
Cons:
The plastic mold flashing required complete removal to fit joints correctly. One joint's plastic being short filled on the face, requiring heating and spreading the receiving slot open enough to receive the side tab carefully without cracking.

The confusion with breaking off tabs was not nearly as bad as I've ready here. You simply need to end up with the same mounting tab locations that your stock unit had. You literally have a map of the necessary tabs in your possession when you take the old head unit out, so you need not bother with the instructions if you find them confusing.
Pros:
Easy to use. Free with my head unit.

Make Sure You Have a Cut-off Tool to Fabricate

Written By VA Steve 55, Leesburg, VA on Tuesday, July 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Short story - it does work with a JVC double-DIN deck in a 2004 Silverado 1500. The long story - make sure you have a rotary tool or some other cut-off tool to fabricate this bracket for your particular vehicle. "Universal" means this is basically raw material that the user must modify to fit their vehicle. It ships with mounting tabs for every vehicle it fits, and you have to cut off the tabs that interfere with your fit. It is made of plastic so make sure your don't ruin the brackets taking off the unnecessary tabs. I used a small rotary tool (name brand) with a cut-off wheel. Also, I agree completely with Bruce from Charlotte, the instructions are useless, follow his advice.
Pros:
It works and looks nice when done.
Cons:
Be prepared to spend some time fabricating and the instructions are crazy.

What a waste

Written By RyanW, Minot AFB, ND on Wednesday, July 16, 2014

Instructions are abhorrent! Absolutely garbage and very difficult to follow. They read like a "choose your own adventure" book in a two page pamphlet except that they never get you to the end. Disgustingly vague and practically useless. I am now forced to purchase an entirely new bracket because whoever wrote these installation instructions couldn't keep them straight.
Pros:
What?
Cons:
Instructions do more harm than good.

A little fiddly, but ultimately worked

Written By JeffS., Murfreesboro, TN on Wednesday, July 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A lot of tabs to break off. Had to really study the instructions to make sure and not screw it up. The face plate was kind of a tight fit and bows out a little when installed, but you can't tell when the vehicle dash trim is installed. I hope the plastic holds up over time.
Pros:
It did adapt the radio to the truck as advertised.
Cons:
Takes a bit of study to make sure and break off the correct tabs.

This kit makes my radio look like it belongs. You know that friend who has that awkward looking radio in their vehicle? Sure it sounds nice, but it just sticks out like a sore thumb. Well, this will not be you! My only complaint, it doesn't exactly match the color of my factory dash. Other than that, it is sweet!

Good value. Looks sweet/factory.

Colors don't exactly match up to factory.

This kit was really frustrating to assemble for my Trailblazer. It was made like a one-size-fits-all, but required multiple pieces to be cut off which was tedious and hazardous. It would be just as simple to have different kits that fit most car types. However, once we got it cut to size, it looks great.

Looks good and fits well.

Very difficult to assemble for my car. Required a lot of time and cutting to get the perfect fit for my car.

Works, but not impressive

Written By DaveS, Portland, OR on Tuesday, May 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter worked fine for installing a new head unit into our 2003 Pontiac Grand Am. As expected, it's just a big piece of plastic with tabs in the right spot to bolt to the OEM mounting holes. Where I think it could be improved is either a more specific product offering for each model of car, or a better way to customize it. As it is you get somewhat cryptic instructions that tell you to remove certain tabs depending on what model car you have. What you aren't told is how best to accomplish that, and the tabs aren't scored or otherwise marked in a way make them easy to remove (which kind of makes sense since that would also necessarily weaken them, which is not what you want for the tabs you keep). I ended up using wire snippers to remove the unwanted tabs, and it was difficult and the result a bit ugly. But it did work.
Pros:
Does the job
Cons:
Tabs are hard to remove cleanly, instructions are a bit cryptic

Good product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good product. Looks good installed. The instructions are lacking clarity for sure. The product required a great deal of manipulating to fit my application. Best advice is to remove the factory head unit and compare the pieces to make them match. If you are looking for a kit that you can pull out of the box and it install it this is not the one.
Pros:
Works and looks good
Cons:
Requires a great deal of manipulating and thoughtful decision making.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The instructions were confusing. The plasitc parts had bumps and seepage from their moiding process. However, I was able to get a good result by cleaning up parts and using my old unit as a guide.
Pros:
After much study and calls it provided a strong conversion unit.
Cons:
Poor instructions and quality control.

Fit the radio and the opening perfectly
Pros:
Everything fit
Cons:
Almost too many mounting points. This adapter probably fits every GM vehicle made with a double DIN radio. I removed all but 2.

Instructions were confusing...

Written By joe, Norman, OK on Monday, March 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've installed a few stereos with kits from Crutchfield, all without issue, however, this kit was a bit disappointing!

So, this product, technically works for my car, however...I literally did not follow the instructions... they were too confusing! On one page, it would say to break off certain tabs if your vehicle was not this certain type, then you'd go to the next page and their would a diagram that looked almost like a side view, and we should "not remove" other tabs if your vehicle was on this new list.

In the end, I had to put the pieces together, do what I will call a "visual fit" of the bracket, then break off all the tabs based on that... Like I said, it technically works, but I would almost recommend not following the instructions on this one!
Pros:
It will fit... there are about 20 different car models this bracket will fit, and it certainly worked for my car
Cons:
The instructions were confusing and a bit hard to follow.

What a great product. just followed the directions for my 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and the system fit right in with out having to use the metal sleeve.
Pros:
perfect fit
Cons:
removing some of the tabs was a little diificult but nothing that a sharp box knife and some patience didn't take care of.

This kit works as advertised, but you need to take care when breaking off the tabs you do not need. I used a hacksaw blade (by hand) to remove the larger tabs on the trim plate. The side-plate tabs were removed using needle nose pliers.
Pros:
Works fine Looks good
Cons:
Tabs can be difficult to remove - use care

American International GMK-422 Dash Kit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had to go to a local shop and buy a new one because the directions told me to cut the tabs off the sides and when I went to install my deck the tabs I needed were the wrong ones so if you buy this take your factory deck out first so you know you are not cutting off the tabs you need
Pros:
It would have been a 5 star if the directions were written well
Cons:
The directions are horrible they should tell you to take your factory deck out first so you know what your working with

Confusing...

Written By Dave, MA on Saturday, March 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Directions for installing this kit were very confusing. I literally took the directions after reading them over 10 times and threw it out. I then lined up the brackets that would be screwed in and cut the rest off.. I know the kit was made to accommodate many vehicles but i feel like the directions need some work.

In my opinion, ease of installing and directions are just as important as the quality of the product.
Pros:
Fits perfectly in my vehicle and great quality!
Cons:
Directions were useless.

Read directions carefully

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Iinstalled in a 2004 silverado and it fits up perfectly. The instructions are a bit triicky to figure out which pieces need to be removed as it is a universal kit and therefore list several different makes and models, however as I said, it fits perfect and is a snap to put together. I actually had to order a second one since the "free" one that came with my order, I cut the wrong monting tabs off. Maybe out of haste as well, but insttructions could be better.
Pros:
Sufficient hardware Fit
Cons:
Instructions and diagrams
