Features

Engine Noise: Noise, caused by the vehicle's engine, can enter your stereo system in one of two ways: through the power source and through the antenna. This noise increases and decreases with speed. This filter eliminates engine noise coming through the power source.

Note: For noise entering through the antenna, you should install an Antenna Noise Filter (see item # 003AS100).

Multiple Applications: This noise filter can be used for all audio components in your vehicle, including receivers, equalizers, tape players, CD players, CD changers, or small amplifiers.

Capacity: The S-15A noise filter is recommended for audio components rated up to 15 Amps and 250 watts.

Easy Installation: The filter can be mounted to a flat surface using the supplied mounting screws and mounting plate. You can also mount the filter using the supplied 10" wire tie. The filter features three wires that need to be spliced into the power and ground wires leading to the component. The red wire connects to the fused power wire leading to the radio. The blue wire connects to the power lead of the receiver (or component), and the black wire is connected to ground. The filter is most effective when mounted close to the radio.

Didn't solve my problem

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a recently restored a camaro and i noticed engine noise coming through the radio. I picked up two of these filters placing them on the battery line to the radio as well as the ignition power line to the radio and I only noticed a minimal difference.

The two I got were well constructed and fixed my problem

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was leery after reading all the comments about poor construction (falling apart) and loose solder joints but I decided to try two. When I received them I immediately took the bottom off to check the solder joints. Both had all good solder joints and the case fit the bottom very well, it didn't fall off like some of the reviews explained and has not since I put them back together and installed. They also eliminated 100% of my engine noise. I have a high energy ignition system in my '56 Chevy and expected some engine noise when I installed a new receiver and amp. I put one on the 12V lead to radio and the other on the battery lead (for clock/memory). I recently added a line driver with bass booster in-line with the RCA cables placed just before the amp. It reintroduced engine noise in the system through it's 12V power line (which runs next to an ignition wire). I just ordered a third one of these for that 12V line and expect it to fix the problem by placing it away from the ignition wire and just before the RCA line driver.
Pros:
Well constructed and it eliminated 100% of my engine noise
Cons:
None

Works fine but you might need 2

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was experiencing that annoying alternator whine after installing my new head unit. After following tech support's suggestions and trying to improve the ground connections, I opted to try the filter. I ordered 1. It arrived in 2 days, with free shipping and in perfect shape. I installed it on the switched hot and it reduced some of the whine, but not all. I ordered a 2nd and installed it on the constant hot (clock/memory) and that finally did the trick no more alternator whine. Total investment $26. Both units arrived quickly, in perfect condition.
Pros:
inexpensive and easy to install
Cons:
none

Can you solder?

Written By Roberto, Houston, TX on Wednesday, January 04, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needed a noise filter on XM radio plug in - rest of system had no noise. Package was in rough shape - plastic was torn and unit was covered in little white specs and something was obviously loose inside (rattled). Should have returned it - I'm sure Crutchfield would have taken care of it, but based on previous reviews, decided to open it up and found loose transformer - solder joints to board broken and hot glue everywhere (the source of the white specs). Fixed the solder joints, zip-tied back together. Installed and no more noise on XM. So... it (now) works great for me - but construction quality is horrible.

This little guy did the trick in our race trailer. We had a lot of interference in our 12 volt radio whenever we started the generator. This removed all the humming, static and noise. Great deal and simple to install.

American International S-15A

Written By Sam, O.C. CA on Thursday, January 20, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have never written a review regarding an item I purchased, but I felt I had to give a review to this one.
Package was fine; product looked fine until I removed it from the package.
As mentioned, it did look good, but it rattled and just felt like it was falling apart!!!
I opened it up and found that inside electrical piece had come unglued from the case.
The solder points were lose and needed to be re-soldered.
I had to reapply glue and ziptie the assembly together.
Horrible craftsmanship and I cannot believe that Crutchfield caries this.
If this is purchased by someone who does not have the knowledge to repair it, it will be returned as it will not function correctly due to bad solders, or it will fail in a short period of time.
After the repairs, it did work as advertised though.
The alternator whine was gone.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very poor workmanship in pretty package.
It didn't work. The device also had a rattle. Had to take it apart and found the glue holding the circuit board had broken loose. Also found a cold solder joint on one of the choke coil leads where it attaches to the pc board. It appears that all of the enamel coating on the copper leads had been poorly cleaned resulting in the cold solder joint. Cleaned up leads and resoldered. Filter now works as expected.

Worse than nothing. Save your money.

Written By Therian, LI, NY on Thursday, April 08, 2010

I've bought a few noise filters over the years and I've never seen one that actually made things worse (until now). There was actually more nose and interference with this filter installed than without it.
A complete waste of money and time installing/uninstalling it. I've never been motivated to write an online review before this, I hope I can help keep someone from throwing away their money like I did.

Didn't do the job

Written By uncle buck, Grand Blanc, MI on Thursday, April 01, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was referred to this product by crutchfield's technical article on how to suppress engine noise. It did not fix the problem on my car. I installed two amps and two subs along with a 4ga power wire and JL audio twisted pair audio cables (not cheap!) along with a kenwood kdc-x792 h/u. upon finishing the installation, I had a horrible high pitched whinning coming through all speakers. following the flow chart for eliminating engine noise, i installed this unit and it did nothing. I found the real problem after searching the internet and found that I needed to ground the low side (shield) of the h/u's pre-out jacks, as well as the chassis of the head unit itself. Once I did this, the noise went away about 90-95%. There was still a hint of whine but could only be heard if the volume was all the way down. It bugged me not because I could here it, but because I knew it was there and if I listened for it I could here it. so I once again connected the noise filter and the remaining noise is gone. so, did it work? sort of.

I had and still do with this waste of money item. This thing made absolutely not difference with the alternator noise coming over my system. I hooked it up and was hoping to clear the whine from the power and it was a total dude. No difference at all with this attached. Waste of money.

Hello,

I installed a Dual stereo in a 2002 maxima and had engine noise/whine so I ordered this and now the whine is gone. A good deal except shippping is almost 50% of item cost, plus it was out of stock for a long time.

Worked great, cheap!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to use in my 2003 Jeep Liberty. I hooked it up to the utility outlet in the dash, which feeds power through a direct hook up to my Sirius head unit, and through a monster plug in cable to my IPOD.

Before installation, I was getting definite engine noise. This was worse after I had to replace the Sirius antenna wire and routed it near the utility outlet. After rerouting the antenna lead up by the radio and installing this filter, I cannot hear any engine sounds, even when listening to talk radio on Sirius where the engine noise was very pronounced.

Great product, fit easily behind the dash using heavy duty double sided foam tape, took maybe 20 minutes to install.

Works well, poorly constructed

Written By Stephen, Montana on Sunday, September 24, 2006

I bought the S15A 15-amp/250-watt version.

This filter works very well. It is easy to install and small enough to fit into the fairing of a motorcycle.

It is, however, poorly constructed and needs a little modification if it is to be used in a high vibration environment. The transformer is wrapped in teflon tape and held to the circuit card with a small daub of RTV. This combination resulted in the transformer breaking off the circuit card.

Installed the filter on a factory Ford stereo with equalizer and was amazed at how effective it was! Even distant, previously unlistenable AM stations are very clear. I listen to a lot of Sports radio on AM for game play-by-play while traveling. This filter completely eliminated the engine whine through the radio. I would highly recommend the product.

I was getting terrible engine noise after installing a wired fm modulator for my mp3 player in a 2000 Galant. I installed this filter between the fuse and the modulator and have greatly reduced the noise. It is not entirely eliminated however, which is somewhat disappointing. I would say that is has reduced it by 70% and I can generally only hear the noise between songs. I would say this product was worth the money I spent on it and I would do it again.

American International S15A installed on an 89 Riviera w/ Bose system

Written By Nik, Wisconsin on Thursday, May 25, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product from Crutchfield and installed it the next day in my '89 Riviera. Installation was a breeze, but it did not work like I expected it to. Don't get me wrong, it does work, but the noise is still present and was only cut down by maybe...maybe 50%. But what else are you going to do when confronted with an electrical noise interference problem? I am glad that I tried this product because 50% is still 50% and I am one step closer to a crystal clear sound system. And for a little more than $10 I guess it does a fine job.

And thank you Crutchfield for your awesome customer service and technical support. If you are a first time do-it-yourselfer and need any help with your purchase whatsoever, these guys know what they are doing and will help you so you can complete your project and do it right the first time! You can't get this kind of service anywhere else!

answer to my prayers

Written By Kevin, Gilroy, CA on Tuesday, December 06, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was hearing bad high pitch alternator noise while driving. (Varying pitch with engine RPM) And I was hearing sideways noise from the interior lights when the doors were open.

This thing completely eliminated the entire problem. I just spliced one into the head unit's constant power input, and one into the head unit's switched power input. Then connected both filters to ground and the problem disappeared. It's a pretty cheap fix, and my sound quality is crystal clear now.

Next time I replace a head unit, I'm gonna save myself a lot of trouble and install a couple of these at the same time. Not having to worry about it would be well worth an extra 25 bucks in my opinion.
