Overview

Our take on the Bose® 161™ speaker system

If you didn't know it was from Bose, you might not expect much from this elegant but unassuming little speaker. But each speaker in the 161™ system packs several patented Bose technologies into its slender cabinet to ensure spacious, ear-pleasing results. The Articulated Array® speaker design houses two angled, full-range 2-1/2" drivers engineered to generate more air movement from a small enclosure than conventional drivers. And Bose's Stereo Everywhere® speaker performance delivers great stereo sound throughout the room, not just in a small "sweet spot" like standard speakers.

Bose's 161™ system performs as a great set of stereo speakers in smaller rooms — or use the speakers as surrounds in a complete Bose home theater system, with the voice-matched Bose 301® system for the front channels, and the VCS-10® center speaker.

Don't Be Fooled with The BOSE Brand Name

Written by: ChrisH from Washington on September 8, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are expecting great things from this product based purely on the BOSE name, guess again. I spent a lot of time reading all the reviews of this product on many seller's websites and it was told how the rich deep sounds could be heard clearly, the highs and mid ranges as well. Truthfully, the speakers sound no better than the old wooden boxes I replaced. Yes, it could be my receiver but it is a pretty decent one. I will be exchanging my receiver with a friend and report back if there is improvement

Pros: Ease of installation

Cons: Not the BOSE sound I expected.

Purchased these speakers to use as rear surround speaker. The speakers are ok but not as you would expect coming from Bose. They sound decent but didn't impress me and would not purchase them again.

Pros: Have nice wall mount with speakers, easy to mount and look good.

Cons: Sound quality not what expected from Bose, could have been better. Pricy for quality of sound.

The sounds that these emit are very clear. Having a set of Bose Companion 2's I had expectations. These lack bass response. I was unimpressed and sent them back. If used with a sub, I'm sure they would be fine. As stand-alone speakers, you'll be dissatisfied.

Tinny. Had I been able to hear these beforehand I would never have purchased them. Designed for the eyes not the ears. If that's what you are looking for, you might be satisfied. Some listeners say they sound OK, but I think they are being polite. I will replace them with something better someday. I am not inclined to look to this manufacturer in the future. Installed in a kitchen/dining room, zone 3 driven from Onkyo 929 receiver.

Pros: Good price for Bose, small space savers.

Cons: Not quite big enough for my great room.

Excellent Speakers

Written by: AustinC from Chattanooga, TN on June 24, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these for my Dad on Father's Day to use as surround speakers with his Bose 301s, because they are voice-matched to them. They sound great with the 301s and I highly recommend them. Excellent clarity. As far as using them as front speakers, I feel like they might lack the bass necessary to use them alone, but if you added a sub, they would be fine, as long as the room wasn't too big. Also the mounting brackets that came with them are terrific. That was definitely a selling point for me. It makes it really convenient to not have to buy separate mounting stuff. Don't believe the people who say Bose sucks. I agree that they can be quite overpriced, but they are by no means bad speakers if you have the money, especially in home theater applications.

Pros: Sound Quality, Size, Mounting Brackets

Cons: Could use slightly more bass, but keep in mind how small they are.

These speakers are being utilized in a surround, front high environment and are delivering crisp, clear sound. Installation with the supplied wall brackets was quick and easy. I would recommend the 161's for most any surround environment either front or back.

Pros: Easy to install and sound is great!

Cons: Be careful with the white speakers as they may become soiled during installation.

Pros: Work well in the kitchen and blend very well without being obtrusive- you hear the music

A Bit Lacking in Bass, Still Good Though!

Written by: 94zj318 from md on November 27, 2012

I bought these to use them with my HDTV in my bedroom. They look nice and have a curvy look to them, and they even include the wall mount brackets (I don't have them wall mounted, but plan to do so soon). The voice clarity, treble response, and midrange response is pretty good, however, don't expect a lot of bass response, as these are meant for surround or rear channel use. They are also a bit overpriced. I'd recommend them, though.

Pros: Good for using with an HDTV, good for rear channel or surround use, pair with VCS10 for an even better experience, good voice response, good midrange and treble response

Cons: Lacking in bass, overpriced

Good for Back Channel Use

Written by: Ron D. from Union, NJ on October 18, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are now being used as back channel surround speakers in a 7.2 system. All of the other speakers are Polk Audio, and the 161's blend in very well. There's no way that speakers of this size can deliver any credible bass, but clear high and mid-range make them good for surround use. I bought these because of their compact size and flexible mounting options, and was pleasantly surprised at the sound quality. The spring clip speaker connections are not the best, though, and it will be a struggle to connect any wire larger than 18AWG.

Pros: Wide dispersion, good clarity

Cons: Spring clip wire connectors

Excellent Clarity

Written by: Paul from Houghton, MI on August 3, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was originally hoping to get in-wall speakers, but the old walls in my house would not cooperate and I purchased these as a replacement. I have them paired with a JBL PB10, a Jensen Center channel and a TEAC receiver, and the whole system sounds great! I have been giving it a bit of a run with the British Olympic Soundtrack and it is covering the range beautifully and with excellent clarity. I have also given it a run with the latest Star Trek, and was very impressed with the dialog clarity.

Pros: Great looking (mine are mounted vertical), pretty easy to mount with the provided plate, the mounting plate has a pass through for the cable that helps things stay tidy. The teeth on the mounting bracket help keep the speaker at the chosen angle.

Cons: The screw to tighten the speakers to the bracket can be a little tricky to get in because each one seems to have a bit of paint on it. Would be cool if you could add the Bose logo later, but none of these are problems of any significance.

Good sound for the price.

Written by: Dave C. from Galesburg, IL on July 3, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are being used as the main speakers with a stereo system in the family room. Because this isn't my main system, I'm not so concerned with the amount of bass produced. If these were paired with a subwoofer, I think the average listener would conclude that they sounded pretty good. Based on past experience with Bose speakers, I'm confident these will live up to expectations.

Pros: Small size, reasonable price.

Cons: Could use more bass.

I hooked these speakers up to my home amplifier to get better sound from my new TV. These Bose speakers have very true sound quality. They really live up to the Bose name. I would recommend them speakers to anyone that wants to have the best sound you can get out of a small set of speakers.

Pros: Very good sound quality and very nice style.

For the money, these are great surround speakers, do not expect much bass. For ambient sound, they are great, very clear, no distortion or static. Had to call Crutchfield when I was hooking them up, because I had them on the wrong terminals at first. Great service from Crutchfield, as usual. I have been a customer for years. I love Crutchfield!

Pros: Great price, like the fact you can get them in white or black. (I chose white)

Bose 161 Speakers

Written by: Bud W from Roswell, GA on January 27, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought four of the Bose 161s as rear speakers in a 7.2 surround system that consists of JBL front and center channel speakers plus Polk Audio subs...all powered by a Denon AVR-2312CI receiver. They've been installed for approximately one month in a medium-sized home theater room. So far, I am extremely pleased with the results. For moderately priced home theater systems, such as mine, they offer several positive attributes...beyond the obvious dollar value. Of course, Bose quality is first and the included mounting brackets worked extremely well for me. Even something as seemingly insignificant as having a color choice for the speakers was nice. Finally, the sound quality is excellent for the money spent. So far, this is proving to be a good choice for my application.

Pros: Bose quality; value priced; perfect size for my application; included speaker mounts; color choice.

I did a fair amount of research in my quest for rear speakers for an existing stereo system. Bose produces an excellent product by all measurements and Cruchfield delivers!

I got a pair of these for Christmas a couple of years ago. I hooked them up to my stereo receiver and they produce that sound that Bose is known for, crisp, clear highs, and nice mid-range. The Ideal Speaker for Highs/Mids when using a sub! Great for DTS-MA an

Written by: David Yu from Oklahoma City, OK on March 7, 2011

I use the Bose 161 as REAR Surround sound speakers and they are absolutely amazing. I have a Yamaha Neo HD YMC-700 receiver with all the bells and whistles. The 161are lacking in the bass department, but if you use a sub woofer as a primary source for low frequencies, These little powerhouses will seamlessly give balance with its crisp highs and warm mids, which gives you that "IMAX" theater effect, in my opinion. The 161 are mainly being used as L/R Rear Surrounds in a 6.1 set-up. I mainly use DTS-Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD signals via HDMI 1.4 for Blu-Rays, and the clarity is remarkable, even using large floor standing speakers (Athena AS-F2) and a powerful subwoofer ( Athena AS-P4000) Purchase these with confidence. You will be happy!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a good sounding wall mountable speaker that wasn't going to cost me a fortune. I have a business with a customer area that's about 1800 sf that I needed to fill with sound. It has an open ceiling that is 16 feet high, so I'm talking a lot of air volume. I ordered 3 pair of these to do the job. I definitely made a good choice. They have a great sound and look. I'm getting ready to order 2 more pair for my kitchen area and these will definitely be the ones I get. A note to a serious music critic, these speakers are meant for background music, not deep base, thumping sound.

Great looking speaker, with great sound for a surround speaker. Not sure if it would be the best for a full range speaker, but sounds excellent with great dynamic range for surround sound. Nice rich sound. The mounting "system" that they give you isn't worth a lick, but I did end up using it as most other mounting systems have the large speakers sticking too far out of the wall.

Written by: showen from S.F. Bay Area on October 9, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had an old pair of Bose 201's which still worked great I but needed to consolidate after moving in with my then fiance. No, she did not tell me to get rid of them. So, after reviewing the products on Crutchfield last Holiday, I bought the Bose 161's and an Infinity PS28 subwoofer. We have been extremely satisfied ever since with their performance and value. I installed the 161's in the ceiling corners with the PS28 just past mid-room near the TV. The components are powered by my trusty old Yamaha receiver. Together, they fill our (we got married) 18'x14' living room with great sound.

Good for surround, not as primary

I got these to replace my TV speakers and like others have mentioned, these have a noce wide dispersion but are not good as primary speakers due to their inability to handle bass. They also require a more powerful amplifier to drive and TVs are not good! The wide dispersion make them perfect as surround speakers. In fact, that is how I am using them and are remarkably good at their price.

I LIKE THESE SPEAKERS VERY MUCH. FOR THE PRICE, THEY ARE A BARGAIN. I USE THEM AS MY REAR SURROUND SPEAKERS. THEY ARE PAIRED WITH MY BOSE 201 FRONT SPEAKERS. THE TWO SETS OF SPEAKERS ARE PERFECTLY MATCHED. I WOULD RECCOMEND THESE SPEAKERS AND ANY BOSE SPEAKERS TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN GOOD SOUND.

I have looked at and have listen to the Bose 161 Surround speakers.
I use 3 pair. (Front L/R)(Surround L/R)(Rear L/R).
These speakers alone have a pleasing sound but are not design to produce Bass compaired to a powered or non-powered sub.
I was able to listen to the 161 at a local store.
The 161 required a bit more input/volume compaired to other displays.
But I've owned Bose products for years and have never been disapointed with there look an most importantly Sound.
Match the 161 with a powered sub and you'll never have any regrets.
Bose 161 speakers

Written by: Patman3 from Las Vegas, NV on February 15, 2006

The units look nice and sound good. I'm using them as surround speakers mounted to the ceiling, angled down. The bass may be a bit weak but they are just surround speakers, that's what the bass pounding woofer is for. There is a 2 piece bracket, one attaches to the speaker, the other to the mounting surface. Bose gives you a screw to attach the 2 brackets together to finish the installation. The screw is TOO LONG! I couldn't get it tight enough to hold in place. It's a #8 screw so I found a slightly shorter one that would make it tight but the head was to large so I had to grind down the head to fit in the plastic recessed hole. If you are just setting the speakers on a table they give you rubber feet, so you wont have this problem.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a pair of the Bose 161 speakers to use as extension speakers in a small dining room. They are connected to a Techniques 75 WPC receiver using 16 Ga wire.

While the highs and midranges are fine, the bass is very disappointing and barely there. When I contacted Bose to recommend a woofer or unpowered subwoofer they told me that they do not sell such products. I wished that your specs had listed the speaker range in CPS that may have helped me make a better decision.

I have had a pair of 161's for about a 2 years now and just purchased another pair from crutchfield, i use them for my front and surround speakers in a 6.1 surround setup. I have them hooked up with 16 gauge monster THX certified cable. I can crank up the reciever all the way with no distortion from these speakers, i like the small size of these and that they can be mounted to wall/ceiling. They sound great for music and movies.

Driver Technology

Articulated Array Speaker Design: By precisely positioning the drivers inside the speaker cabinet, an Articulated Array speaker design can provide a large, consistent sound field. This allows for a more cinema-like experience.

Stereo Everywhere Speaker Performance: Because many conventional speakers radiate sound directly into the room, you hear balanced stereo sound only in one small "sweet spot." Using patented Bose Direct/Reflecting speaker technology, the Direct/Reflecting speakers deliver a natural balance of reflected and direct sound. You hear balanced stereo sound almost anywhere in the room.

Mounting Options

Mounting: Using the supplied brackets, the Bose 161 speakers can be mounted vertically or horizontally on the wall. Using the supplied self-adhesive rubber feet, the speakers can be placed on any flat surface.

Note: For Stereo Everywhere speaker performance, horizontal mounting is required.

Recommended Power: 10-100 watts with receivers rated from 4 to 8 ohms

I like Bose and only one that is decnt priced it is for my screened in porch don't need anything loud or bassy as it is a home audio system [ Donna Apr 13, 2016 ]
It looked different [ George Dec 13, 2015 ]

8 questions already asked

I Guess it is possible. Don't know how good they would sound though being used as center channel speakers [ MICHAEL Dec 27, 2015 ]
I am using a set as back speakers and another set as top speakers in a Dolby Atmos setup, so I guess you could one as a center speaker. [ LINDSAY Dec 27, 2015 ]
Documentation states 10-100 when driven with 4-8 ohms [ MICHAEL Sep 21, 2015 ]
As rear surrounds they work perfectly. I have a set of Bose 201 Series IIIs that I use as front channel speakers. [ Vincent Apr 09, 2014 ]
I used the Bose 161 as rear speakers for the surround sound, I'm not sure these speaker are suitable for front speakers. Dan E [ D Apr 04, 2014 ]
I use them as my rear surrounds and they sound great, when I first bought them I had them hooked up to the front speaker terminals and I thought they sounded awesome that way also. [ JESSE Apr 03, 2014 ]
No they hook up to a receiver. Most TV's don't have speaker inputs directly on them. [ Vincent Apr 09, 2014 ]
These are to be attached to any speaker output. Preferably mid to highs. Mine are connected to the mid-rear of a 7.1 system. they have to be powered. Thanx, and have a nice day, Danniel [ DANIEL M Mar 04, 2014 ]
No [ JESSE Feb 25, 2014 ]
I hooked mine up to my receiver as a set of rear speakers. [ ERIC M Feb 24, 2014 ]
Most, if not all people don't even have speaker terminals on their TV. Standard hook-up for these speakers would be to a stereo receiver or A/V receiver via the speaker terminals on the back of those components. [ ROBERT Feb 24, 2014 ]
The brackets have a turning radius on them. So I belive they can be placed on the ceiling at an angle to tilt toward the listener. It will be a sublte tilt. [ LISA Apr 08, 2015 ]
Probably not, given the mounting bracket and the shape of the speaker. [ EDWARD J Apr 08, 2015 ]
Yes, the speakers come with a bracket that can be used for ceiling or wall mount. [ MICHAEL S Apr 07, 2015 ]
David - I'm not sure, but I don't see why not. I mounted ours on a beam near the ceiling, and they sounded great. Not sure you'd be able to angle them correctly if you mounted them on a horizontal ceiling. Hope that helped. [ Gary Apr 07, 2015 ]
Yes. the mounting brackets would allow for that [ ROBERT Apr 07, 2015 ]
Yes. [ BRUCE J Apr 07, 2015 ]
Yea I have them as a second channel in my kitchen, and they work very well, depending on the music source, it comes across well, you do lack some bass, but for a nice way to put quality sound that doesn't sound like a radio in a room, this will do the trick I think. [ MICHAEL Dec 29, 2014 ]
Casey, We placed a set in our bedroom and on a a screened in porch and enjoy them a lot. We do have our house wired for speakers in every room and being retired rarely turn the volume up. My concern would be if the space you are trying to fill is very large they may not be enough, but then that depends on what you listen to. I do consider the sound quality good, but then it is Bose. [ KIT Dec 29, 2014 ]
These speakers are probably the least expensive Bose. As such, they are OK. Not great, not bad, just OK. They are heavy in the middle. Not much base, and they lack detail on the high end. They worked fine for me but I am using them with a subwoofer. [ MICHAEL S Dec 29, 2014 ]
I use them for surround sound. I think they would be fine [ DONALD T Dec 29, 2014 ]
No, you must connect these to a receiver. [ Vincent Apr 09, 2014 ]
They can but it will require a special wiring harness to plug into the external speaker port on your computer. The speakers are very good. [ DAVID P Feb 26, 2014 ]
No, not directly. Computer speakers typically have an amplifier in them since the computer does not. This is why computer speakers must be plugged into a wall outlet (or sometimes they use batteries). You can, however, play music from your computer wirelessly through your home audio system using technology like NuForce Air DAC. I have recently installed this and find it great! [ STEPHEN Feb 25, 2014 ]
that would not be ideal, these are designed for outdoor usage [ THE BIG Feb 25, 2014 ]
I do not know - I hooked the pair I bought from Crutchfield to my surround sound system in my living room. I do know they give out a really nice and concise sound. Sorry I could not be further helpful [ PHILLIP Feb 25, 2014 ]
These cannot be used directly with a laptop, as they require an amplifier to produce sound. You would need to purchase a suitable amplifier and a cable to connect to your laptop's headphone port in order to use these speakers. [ TIMOTHY J Feb 25, 2014 ]
You could paint them, however, disassembly would be required. [ Vincent Apr 09, 2014 ]
Judy, there is no reason you couldn't paint the speakers, the plastic body anyway, mine closely match the walls where I mounted them, thry blend pretty well, so no issue there, the screens would have to be masked [ MICHAEL Jan 20, 2014 ]
I did not paint them and would be afraid to for many reasons, not the least of which would be changing the acoustical characteristics by plugging up holes. You should ask the manufacturer. [ STEPHEN Jan 19, 2014 ]
