Thanks to Stereo Everywhere® technology and a "they've-thought-of-everything" design, the cool Bose® 191 speakers flood your favorite room with classic Bose sound, without filling up your living area with bulky speakers and stands. They don't call them Virtually Invisible® for nothing.

Two full-range drivers in an Articulated Array® speaker design deliver great performance. Bose's famous Stereo Everywhere® technology sends rich stereo sound all over, so you don't have to search for a small "sweet spot" to really enjoy your music. And proprietary ported enclosures provide clean, consistent performance — especially in the lower frequencies — regardless of the space behind your wall or above your ceiling.

These easy-to-install speakers can be placed in your walls or your ceilings, and they come with a pair of rectangular grilles and a pair of circular grilles — you get to choose which shape best matches your room's look. The grilles and grille frames are finished in white, but are paintable to match your decor.

Optional kits (see "Accessories") are required for installing the Bose 191 speakers in new construction.

Personal long history with Bose and the 191's are the latest addition. Love them! Just can't beat the sound of Bose. Very innovative thinking on the design for wall installation. and relatively easy once the studs were identified. Easy hook-up to the existing system. Highly recommend.

Nice perfect surround speaker, I bought them for surround for surround sound and they have exhibited the capability

Pros: good look and feel, easy installation,

Cons: None, probably they should have either circle or rectangle case only and that would reduce the cost, now one case is kept aside and I dont need it

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is the Bose and has the Bose sound. I installed for new addition of my house for entertainment speaker. Sound quality is crisp and clear. It isolated any hum or distortion from wall space and worked good for my tongue & groove wall. I bridged JBL Sub woofer and it sounds even better and took good amount of sound kicks. It was $100 more than pair of Infinity CS60 but it was worth of it for me. Installation is little more involved than other because the inclosure's odd shape but if you can handle that it is good quality speaker for money you pay for.

Pros: Sound quality

Cons: Installation due to odd shape

Installed Bose 191Speakers in wall and created an impressive sound stage for TV viewing and movies. Also installed in ceilings of rooms for whole house audio and could not be happier. TV and movies sound absolutely exceptional!

Pros: Speaker enclosures focus sound into listening areas, not adjoining rooms or through ceilings. Solid build quality.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Bose 191 speakers for my surround sound in my small, living room. I'm very satisfied with the sound. I installed them in my wall and painted over the grill with paint the color of the wall. They're not invisible but blend in and much better looking then the black speakers I had mounted.

Pros: Great sound, easy to install. also, nice to be able to paint over to blend with room color.

Cons: none yet.

a step just above entry level speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Bose 191 speakers along with a Klipsch RC 52 center speaker. I chose Bose primarily on perception of brand quality. Bose doesn't publish technical specifications on the sound output, so, there is a trust factor in the buying decision. The first issue is the install. The supplied template could be simplified down to giving you a simple rectangular cut out. Instead, Bose provides a complicated sheet, with plenty of diagrams, multiple languages and fonts to the point that the template is confusing and not user friendly. The next issue was attaching the speaker wires. Bose uses little brass screws recessed into the speaker. They are marked plus and minus, but when you are holding up the speaker to the ceiling and simultaneously trying to see, hold and attach wires this is a frustrating design flaw. Banana clip posts, or even spring knobs would be a better choice. While an install is a one time thing, I'd skip these speakers just because of how the wires attach. OK, now my comments on function. I fired up my system and found that the Klipsch center speaker is bright, sharp, crisp and clear. The Bose speakers sounded dull, and reminded me of listening to a radio. I'm very happy I purchased my components from Crutchfield as their sellers are helpful and the company's return policy is forgiving. Had I purchased these speakers from a "low priced" internet seller, I am reasonably certain I would have been stuck with my purchase and disappointed with my system.

Truely 'Almost Invisible'

Written by: Thomas from New Milford,NJ on April 27, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was renovating a room and decided in ceiling speakers were the way to go since wall space was at a premium. Checking the reviews and pricing everywhere I chose Crutchfield because of my many years as a customer and thier excellent customer service. The recommendation for new construction (without a hung ceiling) was to use the metal templates from Bose prior to sheetrocking the room. This was an excellent idea. The templates screw to the studs and are tough enough for the sheetrockers to do the cutouts without damaging the template. A little trimming after and I was ready. With the in wall wiring completed prior to finishing it was a simple matter to hook up the speakers and squeeze them carefully through the template. A bonus with the templates is that they provide a sturdy foundation under the sheetrock when you screw the speakers in place. One complaint is the speaker connection itself. The connection method is via a screw down clamp for either the bare wire or a spade-type crimped connection. There should be a cover or something so the wires are not exposed to whatever may be in the ceiling. Over time the copper wires can oxidize and the connection will become less secure. It just seems that, for the price, Bose could have done better. I can not fairly judge the sound quite yet since I am not done with the room. The testing I did so far though indicates the great Bose sound reputation is safe.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed a few of the Bose 191 speakers myself on a refurbished room. The instructions Crutchfield provided were simply stated and easy to follow. I put up the Rough-In kits, ran the wires from speakers to a housing box and popped in the speakers. It was easy even for someone like me who has never done this type of thing before. I hooked it all up to the Yamaha RX-V659, after installing the connection plate on the wall. It all is a clean look. My house is about 150 years old. I was worried they would look too modern for it, but I had people over who didn't even see the speakers in the ceiling until I told them. There is constant traffic noise just feet from my TV, and I can barely hear it with these on. I was afraid of the sound being loud in the room above the speakers, but you cant hear them through the floor. They make my gaming that much better as well as TV and movies with the clean surround sound. I love the whole system.

Bose 191 in-wall

Written by: paul from South Carolina on December 15, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I found the sound of these in wall speakers to be well above par. After all, these are mid to high range speakers so I didn't expect much bass. Add a nice subwoofer and Denon receiver, I'm happy with the sound and plan to buy two more soon for back surround speakers. And I'll be buying them from Crutchfield! Lightning fast shipping and great service.

Couldn't ask for better sound

Written by: Christopher from Salem, OR on November 28, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did much looking and research at in-ceiling speakers before buying these. I bought these speakers with the idea I got from other reviews that they had no bass reproduction, but I was surprised to hear they did. Bose unfortunately doesn't provide the complete specifications for their products, such as the frequency response. My surround sound system has no sub-woofer at this time, just five of these speakers. After watching several movies and listen to several CD's with these, I've determined that a sub isn't really necessary for awhile. These things cause a rumbling in the entire room during bass reproduction. The only reason anybody should have a sub with these is if they have a serious need to punctuate the lows in their system.

Speakers were very easy to install in a retro enviroment. Directions are straight forward and easy to follow. having the right tools will make life MUCH easier.

In terms of sound, If your looking for full range sound then these are not for you. Highs and mids are very good, however no bass. These make excellent background or surround speakers. Be sure to add a sub for added ooomph!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There were a lot of choices for in-wall speakers from some great manufacturers. However, with all the others I felt like I was taking a chance on the accoustics of my inner walls. Sure I could install sound insulation behind the speakers, but how much, etc.? Bose is so great about tuning enclosed systems (just listen to the wave radio). These speakers really do sound great, excellent mid-range and highs. If you are just adding music to a room these speakers are fine. If these are part of a home theater, you are going to want to add a powered subwoofer into the mix.

Features

Articulated Array Speaker Design: Each speaker features two 2-1/2" full-range drivers in an Articulated Array speaker design, providing beautiful stereo sound across a wide area between the speakers and delivering a more stable center image than most conventional speakers.

Stereo Everywhere Speaker Performance: Because many conventional speakers radiate sound directly into the room, you hear balanced stereo sound only in one small "sweet spot." Using the Articulated Array speaker design, these speakers allow you to experience rich stereo sound almost anywhere in the room, not just in one small "sweet spot".

Proprietary Enclosure Technology: The proprietary enclosure technology ensures consistent performance regardless of space behind the wall or above the ceiling.

Proprietary Ported Enclosure: The proprietary ported enclosure produces cleaner and deeper low-frequency performance and ensures that lower frequencies are mainly directed into the intended listening area, not into adjoining rooms.

Virtually Invisible Speaker Design: These speakers blend with your room - taking up minimal space - while delivering room-filling, lifelike sound.

Magnetically Shielded Drivers: The magnetically shielded drivers allow for speaker placement in close proximity to a television without magnetic interference.

Automatic Protection Circuitry: The Automatic Protection Circuitry protects the drivers from being overdriven without interrupting the music.

Mounting

Installation: These easy-to-install speakers can be placed in your walls or your ceilings, and they come with a pair of rectangular grilles and a pair of round grilles. The speaker requires a cutout with the following dimensions: W=8.0625", H=5.5". A depth of 4.125" is required behind the drywall, regardless of the grilles you choose. Once the holes are cut, each speaker can be dropped in and the dogleg clamps can be tightened, allowing you to secure each speaker to the drywall without any extra assembly.

Note: For installation in new construction, an optional rough-in kit is required. For installation in a drop ceiling, an optional drop ceiling kit is required.

Paintable Frames and Grilles: The grille frames install flush to your wall or ceiling for a finished look and can be painted to match your decor.

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

bose [ Steven L. Dec 05, 2015 ]

5 questions already asked

Partial answer: I have two Bose 191 speakers and a DT SC4000 subwoofer. I had no problem using a different subwoofer as it has its own volume control with internal amplifier. This SW is driven from my preamplifier connected via RCA cable. The Bose 191 speakers are driven from my amplifier, with individual left/right volume controls, connected via banana plugs and speaker cables. [ William May 27, 2016 ]
You probably could. They have good sound, after all, they are Bose. Comes with both round and rectangular grilles and look nice. No exposed screws. I use them as added rear channels on a system with a sub and they work fine in that application. [ Bill May 27, 2016 ]
Did u ever find your answer to the 5th speaker? Why not get two pairs and get a different higher grade single front/center Bose speaker? I had the same question. Don't want to waste money on a third pair when all I want is 5. [ Jim May 19, 2016 ]
Mine and in the ceiling and work very well. [ Rick Jul 16, 2015 ]
BOSE 191 SPEAKERS CAN BE USED IN CEILING OR WALL APPLICATIONS. I HAVE USED THEM BOTH WAYS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE PRE-WIRE TEMPLATES IF THIS IS NEW CONSTRUCTION. I THINK THE ONLY WAY TO PURCHASE IS IN PAIRS. [ RICHARD Jul 13, 2015 ]
yes they can, I have a pair in my bathroom with is a vaulted ceiling, I also used the rectangle covers cause they are smaller, they only come in pairs. can not buy them individually. [ ryan Jul 13, 2015 ]
The speakers work fine in both walls and ceilings. Great sound. I used them for rear speakers, and then the BOSE mini boxes for the fronts. Place the center speaker (voices) at the TV because you want the voices to come from the TV direction. In addition, voices are better if the base response is not overloaded. So find a smaller, high quality speaker for the center channel and you may be pleasantly surprised with the overall system performance. [ Douglas Jul 13, 2015 ]
Ceiling mount is no problem. Speakers come with two sets of speakers covers.......one set is round and made for ceiling mount. These are veru good speakers. [ DANIEL Jul 13, 2015 ]
We bought these speakers for our kitchen ceiling and they work beautifully! Don't know about purchasing singly or in pairs, but I do know that they do a very nice job in the ceiling. [ PATRICIA A Jul 13, 2015 ]
Don't know about purchasing odd numbers, but I installed my two pair of 191's in coffering of my 14 ft. ceiling. We get plenty of compliments on the sound and look. [ Misty Jul 13, 2015 ]
These speakers can be used for the ceiling and in the walls. We have installed them in 10 theater installations we have done for the US Army. When connecting to receiver / sub-woofer for 5.1 surround sound you must use 3 pairs [ Edwin Jul 13, 2015 ]
Cant speak as to the 5th speaker option. Yes these can be mounted in vault ceilings. I have 4 of them mounted in my home. I have them mounted to the bose rough in brackets that I installed prior to sheetrock. With using these speakers there shouldn't be any issue going just into sheetrock as they clamp the sheetrock between the securing clips and the faceplate. Hope this helps. [ REESE Jul 13, 2015 ]
It is the same as the rectangular cut out. The round grill is purely aesthetic. [ Christina Jul 08, 2015 ]
The round grills fits In the square cut out you do not need to cut a round hole. [ Mark Jul 08, 2015 ]
I'm sorry, but I don't remember the exact size, but they have a template included. I think it is about 10", however Crutchfield is very good about providing help. I think you can just call them and they'll know the answer, but I may be getting this question because they didn't know. At any rate, it's about 10". It's a very good product and the instructions were quite easy. I ran into a problem because when I cut into the wall with a handheld saber saw, I ran into some water pipes in the wall. I didn't cause a leak or anything, but I had to adjust the speakers so that the air intake came from above and not below. Fairly easy to do as they can be adjusted. Overall, a good product. Best wishes. [ Jerry Jul 08, 2015 ]
Same speaker. Just the grill is round but it's much larger than the rectangular grill [ Benjamin Jul 08, 2015 ]
Hello Rob D. I purchased these speaker in late 2013. My Samsung smart TV was not able to drive them. I purchased a receiver which hooks into the TV and drives the speakers. It actually worked out great because sometimes I simply want to listen to music in the TV room. Overall love the speakers, Dave [ David Oct 21, 2014 ]
I can't answer your question. My 191 speakers are connected to a receiver. [ RONALD Oct 20, 2014 ]
I run mine through a receiver and had to get a sub as well as Bose 301's so I could have full sound. The 191's only have high and mid range at best, they now serve as good rear surround speakers. [ JOHN H Oct 20, 2014 ]
No, you need an amp [ Molly Oct 20, 2014 ]
Yes they could work that way. [ Vincent Apr 09, 2014 ]
For such application, the speakers need to be installed in the side walls of the listening area, and at the same position in each wall. [ BONNE G Feb 12, 2014 ]
I'm not sure about a 7.1 system, but we use the bose 191's as rear components with a pair of Bose 301 Series V's and a sub woofer. It works great. The 191's don't have a lot of power or bass, but they work well as rear components in a surround set up though. [ JOHN H Feb 12, 2014 ]
