a step just above entry level speakers
Written By , New Jersey on Friday, July 31, 2009

I purchased the Bose 191 speakers along with a Klipsch RC 52 center speaker. I chose Bose primarily on perception of brand quality. Bose doesn't publish technical specifications on the sound output, so, there is a trust factor in the buying decision. The first issue is the install. The supplied template could be simplified down to giving you a simple rectangular cut out. Instead, Bose provides a complicated sheet, with plenty of diagrams, multiple languages and fonts to the point that the template is confusing and not user friendly. The next issue was attaching the speaker wires. Bose uses little brass screws recessed into the speaker. They are marked plus and minus, but when you are holding up the speaker to the ceiling and simultaneously trying to see, hold and attach wires this is a frustrating design flaw. Banana clip posts, or even spring knobs would be a better choice. While an install is a one time thing, I'd skip these speakers just because of how the wires attach. OK, now my comments on function. I fired up my system and found that the Klipsch center speaker is bright, sharp, crisp and clear. The Bose speakers sounded dull, and reminded me of listening to a radio. I'm very happy I purchased my components from Crutchfield as their sellers are helpful and the company's return policy is forgiving. Had I purchased these speakers from a "low priced" internet seller, I am reasonably certain I would have been stuck with my purchase and disappointed with my system.

Truely 'Almost Invisible'
Written By Thomas, New Milford,NJ on Monday, April 27, 2009

I was renovating a room and decided in ceiling speakers were the way to go since wall space was at a premium. Checking the reviews and pricing everywhere I chose Crutchfield because of my many years as a customer and thier excellent customer service.
The recommendation for new construction (without a hung ceiling) was to use the metal templates from Bose prior to sheetrocking the room. This was an excellent idea. The templates screw to the studs and are tough enough for the sheetrockers to do the cutouts without damaging the template. A little trimming after and I was ready. With the in wall wiring completed prior to finishing it was a simple matter to hook up the speakers and squeeze them carefully through the template. A bonus with the templates is that they provide a sturdy foundation under the sheetrock when you screw the speakers in place.
One complaint is the speaker connection itself. The connection method is via a screw down clamp for either the bare wire or a spade-type crimped connection. There should be a cover or something so the wires are not exposed to whatever may be in the ceiling. Over time the copper wires can oxidize and the connection will become less secure. It just seems that, for the price, Bose could have done better.
I can not fairly judge the sound quite yet since I am not done with the room. The testing I did so far though indicates the great Bose sound reputation is safe.

EASY and sound Great too!
Written By Amy, NJ on Thursday, January 22, 2009

I installed a few of the Bose 191 speakers myself on a refurbished room.
The instructions Crutchfield provided were simply stated and easy to follow.
I put up the Rough-In kits, ran the wires from speakers to a housing box
and popped in the speakers. It was easy even for someone like me who
has never done this type of thing before. I hooked it all up to the Yamaha
RX-V659, after installing the connection plate on the wall. It all is a clean
look.

My house is about 150 years old. I was worried they would look too
modern for it, but I had people over who didn't even see the speakers in
the ceiling until I told them. There is constant traffic noise just feet from my
TV, and I can barely hear it with these on. I was afraid of the sound being
loud in the room above the speakers, but you cant hear them through the
floor. They make my gaming that much better as well as TV and movies with
the clean surround sound. I love the whole system.

Bose 191 in-wall
Written By paul, South Carolina on Monday, December 15, 2008

I found the sound of these in wall speakers to be well above par. After all, these are mid to high range speakers so I didn't expect much bass. Add a nice subwoofer and Denon receiver, I'm happy with the sound and plan to buy two more soon for back surround speakers. And I'll be buying them from Crutchfield! Lightning fast shipping and great service.

Couldn't ask for better sound
Written By Christopher, Salem, OR on Friday, November 28, 2008

I did much looking and research at in-ceiling speakers before buying these. I bought these speakers with the idea I got from other reviews that they had no bass reproduction, but I was surprised to hear they did. Bose unfortunately doesn't provide the complete specifications for their products, such as the frequency response. My surround sound system has no sub-woofer at this time, just five of these speakers. After watching several movies and listen to several CD's with these, I've determined that a sub isn't really necessary for awhile. These things cause a rumbling in the entire room during bass reproduction. The only reason anybody should have a sub with these is if they have a serious need to punctuate the lows in their system.
