Our take on the Bose® Acoustimass® 16 Series II home entertainment speaker system

Enjoy big, room-filling sound — without crowding your room with bulky speakers. The compact, décor-friendly Acoustimass® 16 Series II home entertainment speaker system from Bose delivers natural-sounding music and high-impact home theater effects. Its six tiny speakers and slender Acoustimass® module envelop you in rich, wraparound surround sound. Bose's innovative approach is the key.

The five small Direct/Reflecting® cube speaker arrays feature Bose's patented swiveling design. You can adjust each speaker's cubes to get the perfect mix of direct and reflecting sound. Features

Virtually Invisible Speaker System Design: The Virtually Invisible speaker system design gives you expansive sound without dominating your dƩcor. The Acoustimass module delivers deep, powerful bass without audible port noise, so it can be hidden almost anywhere in the listening area. The music and sound effects seem to come from the tiny cube speaker arrays.

Powered Acoustimass Module: The Acoustimass module uses a proprietary enclosure and patented technologies to produce deep, rich bass with clarity and balance.

Direct/Reflecting Speaker Technology: The Direct/Reflecting speaker technology helps the compact cube speaker arrays deliver more open, spacious sound throughout the listening area. You hear enhanced surround sound and exceptionally lifelike stereo with a larger soundstage.

Horizontal center channel speaker: Designed to visually complement flat-panel TV screens while delivering natural-sounding dialogue and vocals.

Integrated Signal Processing: The Bose patented integrated signal processing compensates for the human ear's reduced sensitivity to bass at low volumes. You hear the proper balance of deep bass, even at very low, late-night listening levels and dialogue continues to sound natural.

Automatic System Protection Circuitry: When played at high volume, this system's automatic protection circuitry activates to prevent damage to the system from electrical stress or overload. When this happens you may notice a slight decrease in volume, which is normal.

Drivers: The powered Acoustimass module uses three 5-1/4" high-excursion paper cone woofers, each with a foam surround. Each of the five cube speaker arrays features dual 2-1/2" wide-range Twiddlers. The top and bottom sections of the cube speaker arrays can be rotated to create room-filling sound patterns. The horizontal center speaker uses the same dual 2-1/2" wide-range Twiddlers as the cube arrays.

Controls

Right Side of Acoustimass Module:

  • LFE: increases or decreases the relative level of low-frequency effects on movie soundtracks
  • Bass: increases or decreases the bass level of the Acoustimass module

Connections

Bottom of Acoustimass Module:

  • Audio Input: 15-pin male jack for use with supplied system input cable, the other end of the system input cable has tinned wire that connects to the left front, right front, center, left rear, right rear, and center rear speaker outputs and a mono male RCA plug that connects to the subwoofer output of the A/V receiver or amplifier
  • Audio Output: 6 RCA jacks (Left Front, Right Front, Center, Left Rear, Right Rear, and Center Rear); using the supplied speaker cables, these jacks connect to the cube speaker arrays
  • Power: jack for use with supplied AC power cord

Mounting Options

Speaker Mounting: Each cube speaker array and the center channel speaker has a rear-mounted 5mm female threaded insert. The threaded inserts allow you to mount the speaker arrays using optional stands or wall-mount brackets.

Specifications

Connectivity: The AM16 is compatible with A/V receivers and amplifiers rated from 10 to 200 watts per channel and 4 to 8 ohms

Warranty Note

Warranty Note: The drivers have a 5-year parts and labor warranty, the electronics have a 1-year parts and labor warranty.

Remarkable Sound!

Written By David, Berks County, PA on Tuesday, October 28, 2008

The challenge was to find a surround speaker system for a viewing/listening area with physical challenges. I read some reviews criticizing the Bose frequency range. I tried the Acoustimass 16. Man, what sound! Anyone who says the Acoustimass 16 subwoofer doesn't perform hasn't heard the downfiring 3 woofers set correctly or felt the vibrations in the floor. Once set, those six cubes can fill a room with a wide soundstage, with sharp, crystal, distinct clarity. I have tried all types of music to test the system, from Queen, to Clapton unplugged, to Buxtehude classical pipe organ (nothing is a better test for sound range and depth on a system). The quality of sound is refined and clear. I played some SACD's: Dylan, Elton John, The Who live, then Baroque music for brass and organ, finally, Handel's "Messiah". Rich, full, distinct tones. Cable and DVD movies? That little center channel speaker produces clear dialogue while the surrounds and rear are carrying the day with soundtrack and effects. The Acoustimass literally shook the floor and rattled a picture frame on the wall. Trust your ear. If you like full range, rich, distinct sound, I highly recommend this speaker system.
Bottom line? Yes, a more expensive system, but it's flexibility, size, has filled our odd room "challenges" with Remarkable Sound!

Could Be Better...

Written By Peurand, Bronx, NY on Friday, August 22, 2008

Being that I'm a professional DJ/Remixer, my ears are familiar with the frequency range. I got fooled by the bragging from Bose that this speaker system is great, it gets all frequencies cleanly no distortion. I have an Onkyo TX-SR805 powering these speakers. I turned up the volume about 1/4 way. The mids, highs, and midbass were good, but the bass was distorting a lot... You can't hear it from far, but if you go up to the box, you could hear it struggling. Other than that, I've gotten a lot of complaints from my neighbors that the music is too loud and it's shaking everything in my living room. It's good for a small place, and a listener who only loves to watch movies and not blast loud music like me... I'm thinking of adding an additional 12 inch and run the LFE for the Bose from the output of the 12 inch's output...

There is a richness to the movie sounds that do make it worth its weig

Written By Kaylan, St. Petersburg, FL on Sunday, July 06, 2008

My Bose Acoustimass 16 is the second Bose product I have owned. This new Acoustimass module found only in their flagship speaker setup Acoustimass 16 Series II has a total of 3 woofers downward firing. My second foray into home theatre "excitement" was switching to the Infinity TSS750. Now, when comparing the two...the TSS750 did have a clear sounding treble...like when the glass shattered in The Matrix. You could hear that "KEEEEEESSHH" sound. The movie sounds could be described as sounding "brighter". However, the Bose had a warm, richer sound, not as "tinny" as some negative reviews have read. Today, I have the Onkyo TXSR705, now paired with the Bose Acoustimass 16 series 2. It sounds tremendous! I believe the extra woofer gives it more OOMPH! Also setup is very important and Bose cube speakers should be set to Large/Full and not small because they are connected to the Bass module first and not directly to the AV receiver. I have owned 4 different speakers now to know the difference. Magazine reviews state "don't let marketing dictate the quality of your speakers" all the fancy metal, chromium, diaphragms don't necessarily translate to what you will hear, let your ears decide. For me it boiled down to brand quality, great sleek modern looks, and a comparative review of the sound I have come to learn.

As the slogan goes

Written By Kyle, Tampa, FL on Thursday, March 20, 2008

Overall the system is good, you do not however get what you pay for if you ask me. Being in the car audio business, i've learned to have a good ear for music and sounds at certain frequencies, the lows...ok but once you get near and around the 35hz range it tends to distort due to the small 5.25" subs, the high range (17kHz n up) tends to not be too clear. Overall this is a good system, just a bit pricey.

Acoutimas awsomas

Written By Phil, Chantilly, VA on Tuesday, February 12, 2008

After listening to many different brands of surround sound speaker systems, I decided on the Acoustimas 16. I was pretty sure that I will be pleased with the clarity of the cube speakers but was worried about the Acoustimas bass module as I was using a 15" powered sub before. Law of physics would indicate that three 5 1/4" woofers cannot out perform a fifteen incher. WRONG! The bass is not only deep, it is amazingly clean with no flutter or distortion. The cubes, though small, produce full range sounds that only speakers with seperate drivers could produce. The only negative thing about this system is its pricey speaker floor and wall mounts (if you need them).

This system is a very good compromise.......

Written By Larry, Cincinnati, Ohio on Tuesday, February 05, 2008

I have owned the Bose Acoustimass 16 Series II system since 11-2006. I also have a five-year-old Bose Acoustimass 10 Series II located in my Bedroom. The AM16 is a major step up in performance over the AM 10 and is located in my larger theater room.

I am always amazed at the comments in the various Internet AV forums about how these systems are "Junk". This system is far from junk as it produces an incredible home theater experience with a proper AVR. This system is pricey and you need to take advantage of the discount here at Crutchfield to lower the initial cost. The best feature of this system is the sound in relation to the size of the entire system. Dim the lights and the small cubes just disappear leaving you with just the sound and no visual reference of where the speakers are. Turn on the lights and my theater room becomes a family room for the wife and kids without the large floor standing, center and bookshelf speakers screaming, "You are sitting in my theater room!!!" This system is a very good compromise for my wife and me.

Set-up is a breeze and the output cable from the Acoustimass module to the dual-cubed speakers is much easier to hide behind &/or under the baseboards. One problem that I have with the Acoustimass module is that you are limited in your placement choices due to the 20' speaker cable to the front right, left & center speakers. 50' of cable to all six speakers would have been nice. I have always placed the module in the front right corner of my room and tweaked it slightly towards the wall until I was happy with the sound. The Bose web site is lacking in information regarding this system and is very weak compared to Crutchfield and my favorite, Polk Audio web site.

I have had a theater room since 1990 in the various places I have lived around the USA. This system is my fourth different configuration and is a very reliable and a great sounding speaker set-up with my Onkyo TX-SR805 and my Toshiba HD-35A player. One day I will "upgrade" to a system from Polk Audio priced at double what I paid for the Bose and I'm sure it will be an experience. For now, this system will never be placed out with the garbage!

Finally, if you are reading this review, you are in luck, this is the place to purchase. Crutchfield is the only source for me and they really take care of the customer. Please don't think you can "save" money somewhere else. Buy what ever speaker you need here..in fact, please buy all your electronics here and you will have a much better experience. Sure you might save some money initially, but this company earns your business every day and they will stand behind every item they sell. This is a world-class company and the way the treat you is second to none.

In a nutshell:

Pros: Small, Great Sound, Stylish system that disappears into your room.

Cons: Pricey, poor Mfg. web-site support with information on this system, limited placement options for the Acoustimass Module

Superb!!

Written By Jason, Akron,Oh on Saturday, October 20, 2007

I always heard that Bose was the best is adio technology! Now that I own this surround I am a believer! The small cube surround speakers dont look like much, but they blend in great with my room, and the bass? (good lord) !! talk about room filling sound! Also the swivel design for all the surround speakers really let me get the exact sound that I was looking for!!
