Enjoy impressively rich stereo sound without cluttering your living space. The Bose® Acoustimass® 5 Series III speaker system includes two tiny Direct/Reflecting® cube speaker arrays, plus a hideaway Acoustimass module. The satellites are video-shielded for placement near a TV, and the swivel design lets you rotate the twin cubes for an ideal mix of direct and reflected sound.

Because low frequencies are omnidirectional, you can place the Acoustimass module anywhere in your room — even out of sight — and the bass will seem to emanate from the tiny cubes. No wonder Bose calls this design Virtually Invisible®.

  • two video-shielded, dual-cube speaker arrays (6-1/4"H x 3-1/8"W x 4-1/8"D)
  • Acoustimass module with two 5-1/4" drivers (7-5/8"W x 14"H x 19-1/4"D)
  • spring clip connectors
  • recommended power 10-200 watts with receivers rated from 4 to 8 ohms
  • warranty: 5 years

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

limited to two speakers only

Written By Bose two speakers system, California on Wednesday, February 25, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product for the two speakers to expand my existing bose speakers system from 5 to 7 channels. it was disappointing when i saw the subwoofer is limited to two speakers only. i was lucky that was able to sell the subwoofer separately. it'd be nice to allow the subwoofer be expandable. but bose loves to confine everything to its limited functionality. we're in 2015 where 5 channel system became obsolete at the end of the 20th century. but bose continues to make home theater systems limited to 5 channel/speakers, and the price on them is crazy high.

Pros: sound quality

Cons: limited expansion.

Bose Acoustimass 5 Series III Speaker System

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are wonderful speakers to use in a room where you want the speakers to fade away and be heard and not seen. They are best used in a room that is NOT your primary listening location where you do most of your serious listening. They excel in providing the Bose reflected sound, which is pleasant in all parts of the room and provides very good stereo separation from different listening points. There is no "sweet spot". In reading other reviews, I think some people were disappointed because they didn't realize what they were buying. These speakers are a satelite system. Essentially you can think of these speakers as two way bookshelf speakers, with a 5 inch midrange/woofer and a 2.5 inch tweeter. However, the Bose system mounts the two five inch midrange/woofers in a single "bass module" and places the tweeters in small cubes... And instead of including one tweeter, there are two in each cube and these cubes can be turned so that the tweeters can spread their sound. This makes the system very flexible. Just as with any reasonably compact two way bookshelf speaker system, if you want very deep bass for music, or good deep rumbling bass sound effects for home theatre applications, a separate powered sub woofer is essential. That said, in playing rock music at moderate sound levels, I find the bass satisfying and accurate. The bass is tight, not boomy. And not excessive. For very loud music and lots of bass, or for rumbling sound effects, look elsewhere

Pros: Very good sound, very flexible, good for a living room, dinning room, bedroom, or kitchen

Cons: This is essentially a two way speaker system with 5 inch woofers. It is NOT a system with a subwoofer.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, so good. First time Bose speaker owner. Have a summer home that needed "invisible speakers". They seem to fit the bill. They sound very good for their size. Obviously not intended to replace bigger floor standing speakers. Set up easy, just make sure you have a lot of speaker wire depending on speaker placement.

Pros: "invisible" sound good.

Cons: need a lot of speaker wire. but really no big deal. I just ran out!

Bose Acoustimass 5 Series 3

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second set of speakers. I have an Acoustimass 3 set in the living room which is connected to the system in the Den through some creative wiring. I purchased the System 5 for the Den and added to the bookshelf speakers (Bose) that are working in the rear. All in all for the room size (12' X 18") the sound production works well. Still working on getting a little more "thump" from the sub, may have to retrieve the powered KLH I stuck in the closet. Overall we're very pleased with the product.

Pros: Great sound for a small item (cubes). Fits well with our room.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

for such small speakeres I did not really expect such great sound, I thought that they might sound tinny, but wow I was really surprised, they beat the midrange and tweeter sound that I had coming from the infinity towers that I had. but must have a powered subwoofer with this system, the subwoofer portion just is not nearly enough for great bass and sound.by adding a powered subwoofer you get a great balance. now my floor is cleared of big towers. very pleased with this system.

Pros: great balance, sound is very clear, mid range and lows. imaging how well these small speakers sound.

Cons: not enough bass with the system as it is, you must have a powered subwoofer with it for great balance.

The set nicely compliments my Onkyo 8558 stereo in a non-surround setup. The acoustimass bass module is hidden and the cubes take up little space. My wife appreciates that:)!

Pros: Easy setup. Nice look and good sound.

Cons: A little weak in the midrange.

Bose Acoustimass 5 Series III

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added this system as rear-speakers to my ONKYO receiver which has one pair of 301's with BOSE wall mounts. I am happy with the sound of the 301's and the Acoustimass was no disappointment either. The cube speakers are convenient and work well when space is a problem. The module (which looks like a subwoffer) is versatile as it can be placed in many different places easily. I feel Bose is a good value overall as the sound is full and responsive and brings life to the music. I have seen many systems which are louder, and have more depth to their sound, but they also cost thousands more. I placed the cube speakers on the wall with BOSE mounts and they work flawlessly The only gripe I have is that more wire could be provided in the box. If you are going to place these with any significant distance from the receiver, you will need more wire as you will fall short.

Pros: Great sound, innovative, easy to set-up, and convenient where space is tight.

Cons: The included wires need to be a bit longer.

Sound great to me

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I guess it depends on what you owned previously. I had a pair of Epicure tower speakers that I gave away when I moved. They were huge with two 12" woofers in each speaker. They sounded great but took up so much room. I've finally have my music room / Lizard Lounge set up in the new place and I'm very pleased with these speakers. While not the earth shaking bass that I had from my previous speakers, the highs are crisp and the bass is most satisfying. Conveinent configuration and love the white color option.

Pros: Nice sharp mids and especially highs. Can aim them where you want - two directions each speaker. Very nice in the white color.

Cons: I really don't have any.

Sounds GREAT

Love This System

Written By jtshaw84, Spokane, WA on Thursday, July 19, 2012

I love my Acoustimass 5. I was really looking for a great 2.1 system and contemplated getting the Cinemate system instead. I went with the Acoustimass because I wanted a system that was powered from my receiver(Pioneer VSX-522) and that didn't take up a ton of space. What you read about the Acoustimass module is true. This passive sub sounds like it forgot to eat its Wheaties this morning. However, to me that is perfect. I don't want my room earthquaking while I'm watching just normal TV. In my opinion, the included sub is the perfect amount of bass. Sure, for movies a little more bass is nice so I added a Pioneer SW-8 sub. For some, $400 is a bit steep but Bose offers 0% financing if you need it. I'm sure there are better systems out there for $400 but not with the same small size, great looks and simplicity. I highly recommend.

Pros: Small Size Appearance Sound

Cons: Weak Sub(good for TV though)

Think twice

Written By Todd, Florida on Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this system on the reputation of BOSE; don't get me wrong the
system is , ok, that's it, just ok. If you have any size room (larger) DO NOT GET
THIS, think twice. The subwoofer is not powered and seems like it missed it's
daily does of Ensure. In a small room it will be fine, hence that's where I am
moving this system; to the dining room via a Rocketfish to make it wireless. It
should do fine in there. If you're looking for a sound system, go with a seperate
amp. EQ speakers etc. You can do MUCH better. I was going to send this
system back, but the dining room idea saved it. P.S. Crutchfield gets a 100 !

Great Surround Speakers

Written By Ace, Newark, NJ on Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned a pair of the Acoustimass 5 speakers for almost 10 years, and
now that they had gone down in price and I own a 7.1 receiver, it only made
sense to get another pair. I have heard the complaints people have had
against Bose, claiming the mid's are missing, and it is true. I would never use
these speakers as my main speakers, because all you have is highs and
lows. But, for movie sound effects, these speakers are unmatched as your
surround speakers; plus they are small enough to be hidden anywhere in your
room. You will be hard-pressed to find speakers in this price range that are
better. Two thumbs up!

They are what they are.

Written By James, Columbia, SC on Saturday, July 18, 2009

I've had these speakers close to ten years and had always enjoyed them until I had something better to compare them to. If space is at an ultra premium, these may suit you well, otherwise I'd stay clear. Sadly, I think today Bose has become nothing more than a marketing machine. One really pays more for the Bose name than the quality of sound.

Entry-Level System better than TV Sound

Written By BYRON, Near Philadelphia, PA, USA on Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered the Bose AM5 Series III in black because the family was not satisfied with the sound from our big-bucks hi-def Toshiba flat panel television. Of course, to use these, I needed to spend more money on a home theater receiver, but I thought the investment would be worth it. Since I could NOT use back channel speakers (no placement options), I installed this unit with the higher-end VCS-10 center channel speaker. Together I am quite satisfied with the sound quality. I recommend the optional stands for the speakers to get decent height. (Most tables are too low for the speakers to sit on them.) I accidently got the stands in Silver and they blend in better with the light colored walls. Oh, and expect to buy a LogiTech remote to bring it all out of the total confusion remote control world.

What a let down.

This purchase was a real let down. I was hoping to get the legendary Bose sound but it comes up way short. If you are wanting great bass with your movies and music this is not the unit for you. This unit needs a powered sub. Not worth the price of admission.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these based on the reviews, but they don't sound as good as folks let on. Very bright treble, but no midrange punch and the bass is muddy. Maybe it is the Onkyo 8222 receiver I bought with it, or that I am playing my iPod through it using the Onkyo dock. Whatever it is, I guess I expected better than this. Sounds like the equivalent of a cheap boom box.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We bought this to use with a new TV, but when it arrived we decided to try it with our stereo system, just to see how it sounds (set-up is so easy you can try it in every room in the house with no problem). We were able to compare the sound to our existing Bose 901s by switching back and forth, and were surprised to find that this system compares very well to the large and impressive 901s. We put it through quite a test - symphonic, baroque, opera, jazz, rock, hiphop, spoken word - and the sound is astonishingly good. Looking at the little cube speakers, I would never have believed it if I hadn't heard it. We're so impressed with it that we're thinking of buying an additional system for a different room.

Purchased this system for my living room i wanted to get bookshelf speakers but had to compromise with the wife so i listened to this system and purchased it with reservation as the tiny cubes concerned me well after installing which placement is critical as the cubes are off the ceiling about 13 feet from each other and the bass module is behind our half chair the reciever is a dennon 2106 and i had to turn the bass up on the reciever but the sound is truly everywhere!!! it is perfect for listening to music the sweet spot is any where you stand i also have the top portion of the cubes directed at the side walls for reflected sound truly impressive!!!!!!!!! I must stress again placement is critical to get the direct and reflected sound.

My father has this system in his family room. I was so amazed by the sound that I went out and bought one for myself. The small speakers don't take up any space at all and still deliver the great sound you would find from a bigger speaker. I already own the Bose 161 speakers, so this setup sounds GREAT!!! Not only is the sound great, but it was the easiest setup you can find. Will continue to buy Bose and only from Crutchfield.

I bought this set up a couple of years ago when my wife wanted more space in the living room. I had a set of 601's and was nervous about going to such a small set up after enjoying years of great sound from my Bose 601's. I was pleasently surprized to find this setup rocks. I would recommend Bose to anyone. Ever since I bought my first set of Bose in Sardinia Italy while serving in the Air Force, I will never buy anything but Bose. Great sound by a great company.

This was the easiest setup - the small speakers connected to the subwoofer, then you connect the subwoofer to the stereo. Sounds like my bigger 301 or 901's. I bought the 301s in 1980 they they still sound great. You can not go wrong with Bose, and this specific speaker system is just perfect. They look small but sound great - sounds like a Bose add, but it is all true.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a small speaker for my summer home. I want something that could be mounted to the wall, because I had no floor space to create the stereo effect. So I purchased the Bose AM5 III Speaker System. When I was trying them out in our family room, (I have an old pair of Bose 601's) my wife said that sounds good, I would like a pair in the kitchen. Well, that's were they are now, mounted to the ceiling, with the base module on the floor.

What an excellent sound, crisp and clean. The base module will produce deeper bass tones on a vinyl tile floor. You will need to put the rubber feet on to have balance. The cubes are easy to mount to the ceiling and adjust the cube direction. The white speakers came with white wire, trimmed and marked.

I listen to classical music and my wife listens to smooth jazz.

So I just purchased another set for my summer home.

Cube Speakers: Each cube array is composed of two small cubes which can be swiveled. Each cube contains a 2.5" Twiddler cone driver. The two satellites are video shielded, but the bass module is not shielded.

Bass Module: The bass module has a port opening in the front of the unit. There is an automatic system protection circuitry that keeps the unit from being overdriven by reducing output. This may cause a slight decrease in volume.

Wiring: Wires are run from the left and right speaker output of the receiver to the bass module which has two spring clip speaker inputs. Wires are then run from the two spring clip speaker outputs on the bass module to the left and right cubes. Since the crossover networks needed to protect the cubes are in the bass module NOT in the individual cubes, the units must be connected this way.

Wall Mounting: Each of the satellites has a 5mm female thread in the back allowing for the use of optional screw in type brackets.

  • As with most Bose products, many specifications such as frequency response and sensitivity are not given.
  • Power is given as "compatible with receivers or amplifiers rated from 10-200 watts per channel".
  • Impedance is given as "compatible with receivers or amplifiers rated from 4-8 ohms".
