The satellites are video-shielded for placement near a TV, and the swivel design lets you rotate the twin cubes for an ideal mix of direct and reflected sound.

Because low frequencies are omnidirectional, you can place the Acoustimass module anywhere in your room — even out of sight — and the bass will seem to emanate from the tiny cubes. No wonder Bose calls this design Virtually Invisible®.

Product Research

Features

Cube Speakers: Each cube array is composed of two small cubes which can be swiveled. Each cube contains a 2.5" Twiddler cone driver. The two satellites are video shielded, but the bass module is not shielded.

Bass Module: The bass module has a port opening in the front of the unit. There is an automatic system protection circuitry that keeps the unit from being overdriven by reducing output. This may cause a slight decrease in volume.

Wiring: Wires are run from the left and right speaker output of the receiver to the bass module which has two spring clip speaker inputs. Wires are then run from the two spring clip speaker outputs on the bass module to the left and right cubes. Since the crossover networks needed to protect the cubes are in the bass module NOT in the individual cubes, the units must be connected this way.

Wall Mounting: Each of the satellites has a 5mm female thread in the back allowing for the use of optional screw in type brackets.

Specifications:

  • As with most Bose products, many specifications such as frequency response and sensitivity are not given.
  • Power is given as "compatible with receivers or amplifiers rated from 10-200 watts per channel".
  • Impedance is given as "compatible with receivers or amplifiers rated from 4-8 ohms".

I connected Bose Acoustimass to Sony Receiver. I am not familiar with hooking Bose unit directly to TV. It would seem that Bose owners manual should include instructions on how use Bose unit without amp, if it is possible.

If I understand you correctly you are attempting to hook up an Emerson Flat Screen TV to the Bose 5 Series 3 Speakers without an amp. I assume you mean that it is the Bose speakers that don't have the amp. Most Flat screen TV's have more than one speaker outputs. Most have an an optical digital output, a set of Coax outputs (digital cable that looks like an RCA jack), and two standard RCA analog outputs. I assume you do have a receiver, or other suitable amplifier. Simply connect the TV to the amplifier with a suitable connections depending upon your TV and the amplifier. Then connect the left and right speaker output terminals of the amplifier to the speaker input terminals on the bass unit of the Bose. Next connect the speaker output terminals of the Bose bass unit to the left and right cube speakers of the Bose. The Bose unit comes with some wire for these purposes. This will give you your left and right front channels. Whether or not you will have a center channel and any surround or rear channels will depend upon your TV's capabilities, how you hook it up, and the capabilities of your receiver or Amp. If your TV has optical digital outputs, you would probably be able to get 5.1 to your receiver. If this were the case you could use the Bose for front left and right, or rear left and right. The Bose bass unit supplies standard bass output for the left and right speakers. It is not a sub-woofer. If you have a home theatre receiver the situation is a bit different. In this case you would hook the Bose speakers directly to the receiver. Your cable box HDMI output would be connected to the receiver, and the TV is also connected to the receiver with an HDMI cable. The Bose speakers are connected to the home theatre receiver in the same manner as with a regular receiver. A home theatre receiver would give better results in that you would have more flexibility.

I believe the audio output from the TV is only line level. This is not enough to power a pair of speakers. You need a separate amplifier to power speakers. All you need is a power amp. You take the line level output from the TV and plug it into the amp, turn the amp all the way up and you control the volume from the TV.

Q
I was thinking of adding these speakers for a surround system and just to be used for the rear channel. Do they have to connect to the sub or can they connect directly to a 5.1 stereo receiver?

I'd recommend the Bose 161s if you're just looking to use as a rear channel. Without the bass module, these speakers won't sound right.

The small cubes need to be connacted to the sub, they are not full range speakers. The sub contains a crossover that only sends freqences that the cube can reproduce, everything else is handled by the sub. Also everything needs to be hooked up inphase.

Hi, I don't see why you could not connect it directly to the 5.1 AV receiver, as the outputs to the Bose connect directly to the left and right speaker terminals. There is no real subwoofer connection to the AV receiver required. The sub on the Bose system gets works by separating the low high frequencies directly from the left and right channels. Hope this helps! -Gary

The Acoustimass 5 is designed to have the cubes connected to the low frequency base module. The cubes are only tweeters, in other words, no woofer to provide bass. You can use the cubes with a 5.1 system as rear surround speakers, but you would only get the mids and highs (i.e. treble) from them in that set up.
