Our take on the Bose® Companion® 20 multimedia speaker system

by Tara W.
Bose

Introduce your computer to the realism of Bose® sound. The Bose® Companion® 20 speakers are small enough to fit unobtrusively on a desk and powerful enough to fill a room with sound. A great choice for a laptop or a desktop computer, this system delivers clear highs, well-defined mids, and a surprising amount of bass. You'll hear new details in music stored on your computer — from the shimmer of cymbals down to the deep beats of a bass drum.

One of the coolest features is the control pod that's normally reserved for the higher-end Bose computer speakers. Turn the outer ring clockwise to pump up the volume or counter-clockwise to turn down the music. Tapping the top of the Bose logo mutes the music in an instant — very cool. The control pod also features a headphone jack and a minijack input so you can connect an additional source, like an iPod® or iPhone®.

Features

Overview: The Bose Companion 20 is a two-piece computer speaker system (no bass module) that reproduces full, natural sound at your computer. The Bose Companion 20 will dramatically improve the audio from your computer, while its sleek, space-saving design complements your computer environment. Proprietary technology and an advanced port design make your computer's music, games, and videos come alive with striking clarity and impressive low notes at any volume. The included unique control pod makes it easy to adjust or mute volume, connect headphones and add another audio device.

TrueSpace Technology: The Bose Companion 20 uses TrueSpace technology to reproduce wide, natural sound from only two speakers (no bass module needed), bringing more life to your computer's music, games, and videos. Proprietary TrueSpace stereo digital processing circuitry creates a wide two-channel soundstage engineered specifically for listening at your computer.

Advanced Port Design: An advanced port design and powerful drivers are key to the low-note performance that adds depth to your computer's music, games, and videos.

Dual Drivers: Each powered speaker is equipped with two 2.75" high excursion, wide-range transducers for high-performance sound.

Proprietary Integrated Signal Processing: Proprietary integrated signal processing delivers lifelike performance at almost any volume level.

Active Electronic Equalization: Active electronic equalization balances low, mid and high frequencies for more natural tone and clarity.

One Cable Computer Connection: The Bose Companion 20 requires only one cable connection between the powered speaker system and your computer. The right speaker features a 3.5mm audio input and includes a 46" stereo audio minijack cable to connect to your computer or other audio source.

Note: The left speaker features an attached 6' audio cable with a proprietary connector which plugs into the rear-panel proprietary port on back of the rear speaker (labeled "To Left Speaker").

Control Pod: The Bose Companion 20 includes a wired control pod. This unique control pod provides volume control, headphone output, and auxiliary input. The pod features rotational volume control and one-touch mute functionality, plus convenient minijack (3.5mm) input/output for connecting headphones and/or a second audio source (such as an MP3 player). Connecting headphones to the Companion 20 system mutes the sound from the speakers. The wired control pod plugs into the back of the right speaker, via its attached 38" cable.

Note: The control pod measures 2.5" in diameter x 1.125" in depth.

Placement: The size and shape of the Bose Companion 20 speakers make it easy to position them directly next to your computer. The Companion 20 powered speakers should be placed an equal distance from the center of your computer monitor. Make sure to pay attention to which speaker is left & right (identified on rear panel of each speaker). The should be between 18"-32" apart.

Automatic Standby: The Companion 20 system automatically goes into the standby state after two hours when there is no audio signal or the volume is turned all the way down. You can disable automatic standby so the system is always on when connected to power.

AC Power Supply: The Bose Companion 20 operates off of standard household AC current using the supplied AC power adapter and cord. The AC power adapter plugs into the back of the right speaker.

  • Input: 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz, 1.1A
  • Output: 18V - 2A

Very Nice

Written By Chris R, Reisterstown, MD on Friday, May 23, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally was looking for some speakers closer to the $100 range, but after reading a bunch of good reviews on various sites I decided to try them out. I was replacing some old JBL speakers that I thought were pretty good, but after hearing the Bose speakers, boy was I surprised by how much better these were.
Pros:
great sound compact size deep bass
Cons:
price

Great experience

Written By Ken, Paso Robles, CA on Sunday, February 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first purchase of some truly decent computer speakers. I've been quite happy with my decision. These produce what seems to be a good range of sound--lots of detail at all frequencies, although they seem to be a bit bass heavy. Recordings with deep bass don't play very well. A fair amount of distortion with these. Utilizing a Mac requires the installation of an EQ to knock down the bass a bit to achieve good results. Plays well at high volumes and really does fill the room quite well.
Pros:
Nice size, good looks, remote adjustment
Cons:
Price, bass heavy and distorted

Powerful small speaker

Written By PhyllisB, Danbury, Ct on Friday, January 10, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are fairly small in size and they sound great. I use them for my 29" flat screen tv and it works perfect for me. I don't havea lot of space so these are perfect! They not as powerful as the ones that have a subwoofer or sound bar. But if you are looking for a much better sound for your smaller tv or computer these are great!! I recommend them!
Pros:
Small & Sounds very good
Cons:
Not for a really large room

Another great Bose product

Written By jpotts, Mitchellville on Wednesday, January 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What can you say that has not been said, it's a Bose product. I'm on my computer looking at images and the sound is great, highs and lows are not what you expect from these small units. Play an old cd and listen to instruments you been missing, but not anymore, you will here them now.
Pros:
Computer sounds are outstanding but also enhances TV sound.
Cons:
None

Bose Companion 20 Multimedia Speaker System

Written By ALC, Elk City, OK on Tuesday, January 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although my budget was shot to purchase the Bose Companion 20 speakers, they are well worth the price. The sound is superb, much better than previous speakers I've used. There is one complaint, pertaining to the length of the cable connecting the right speaker to the computer. It is too short and couldn't be used in my configuration. Having to purchase a new cable for a system this expensive is irritating. However, the sound alone warrants five stars and overall, I'm very pleased with the speakers.
Pros:
Great sound and ideal size for desk top use.
Cons:
Connecting cable too short.

Excellent Sound

Written By John O, Davis, CA on Wednesday, November 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers have excellent sound. They are well balanced with no particular frequency range over-emphasized or lacking. I listen mostly to classical music, and they provide a very natural sound. They'll play quite loudly, too. Metal fans might want a bit more bass slam, though!
Pros:
Clarity, natural timbre of instruments, don't take up a lot of space.
Cons:
A little expensive.

Defective out of box

Written By Mo, Ca on Tuesday, July 10, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Defective out of the box - the input at the rear of the speaker does not have the same definition/quality as the input at the volume knob which is much better. Bose tells me they are supposed to be better. I realize there is always defect but for a new product, Bose: a. Refused to cross ship a replacement even though I offered to prepay with a credit card as security. Other electronic companies are willing to do this so no reason why Bose would refuse. b. Require I drive to a UPS drop off which is not close to me for a new unit. I've had better service from companies that are not positioning themselves as 'premium' such as Bose. Two stars due to this.
Cons:
Defective out of box.

Fabulous addition to my Linux dual computer workstation!

Written By Carl Helmers, Rochester New York area on Thursday, June 07, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Finally I have functionally replaced my long unused ancient FM equipment with a convenient way to hear the excellent WWW streaming broadcasts that are now available by just plugging the Bose Companion 20 into my computer's audio port and navigating Firefox to an appropriate bookmark! .
Pros:
Wonderrful audio ambience again while writing at my workstation!!!
Cons:
Only complaint: The cord that came with the Companion 20 is 12-15" short. Fix: I put the Right Speaker on top of my primary Linux computer at the left of my two computer stacked displays workstation in order to reach the left computer's output audio jack :-)> .

Great Sound!!!

Written By Dave, Ogdensburg, NY on Tuesday, March 27, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was concerned that the Bose Companion 20 Speakers may not match the sound I got from my previous system that had a powered sub-woofer. All concerns have been set aside, The sound is wonderfull !! The bass may not be as room shaking as it was from the sub but it is more than adequate. I am very pleased with this purchase.
Pros:
Great sound, Looks great, Easy set-up.
Cons:
The audio in cable was a little to short for my application.

Wonderful sound

Written By Shropkat, High Point, NC on Sunday, March 18, 2012

I bought these speakers to replace my Boston Acoustics soundbar that has been giving me trouble. These speakers, connected to the headphone aux jack on my Samsung 42" LCD TV have an amazing sound, and even better than the soundbar. I love the sound! Greats lows and base. Full sound. And the TV remote automatically controls the speakers. I would recommend! You can't go wrong with these!
Pros:
great sound, easy setup. Control pod makes it easy to attach you IPOD or aux device.
Cons:
None

Big Sound From Some Little Guys

Written By Bob, Wheat Ridge on Thursday, December 29, 2011

These speakers are made similar to the wave radio and if you have ever heard the wave radio, then you know how great the sound is that the wave radio can produce. The campanion 20s product sound in almost the same exact way, from crisp highs to outstanding lows...The Campanion 20s give you all the sound you need and can do it without having the need of a sub-woofer. For what you pay for them I don't think you could find any other brand that can even come close to the sound quality in the same size compact speaker system.
Pros:
How small they are, and being placed behind my monitor you don't see them but you certainly can hear them. I really like having the pod that turns them on or off as well as being able to adjust the sound level. The pod also allows you to attach your headphones for private listening.
Cons:
I don't think on Bose products that you can ever find anything that you wouldn't like.

1 question already asked

If this is hooked to my PC and I am listening to something and choose to plug in my headphones, will it automatically reroute the audio to the headset and stop playing through the speakers? Thanks, [ Tamara  Dec 26, 2013 ]
2 answers
  • I gave this as a gift, and the person said that they use the jack and it plays through the speakers. I know this isn't a detailed answer, but hope it suffices. I will say the sound quality is amazing... [ Marcos   Dec 27, 2013 ]
  • Yes. Volume control for headset will then be through bose control pod. [ ADRIAN   Dec 26, 2013 ]
