Our take on the Bose® Companion® 3

by Tom Mathew
Bose

When Bose® stopped by to show us their Companion® 3 multimedia speaker system, we were amazed at how these very small speakers filled a sizeable room with rich, spacious sound. As the premier Bose® multimedia speaker system, the Companion® 3 teams a pair of ultra-compact satellites, an Acoustimass® bass module that can be tucked neatly under your desk, and an elegant control pod. From MP3s, CDs, and internet radio to DVDs, streaming video, and games, hear all of your favorite computer audio sources with unprecedented dynamics and clarity.

Dual minijack audio inputs let you hook up your computer plus an additional audio source, such as an iPod™ or a portable CD player. Setup is simple, so you can connect this classy speaker system in a matter of minutes. You even get handy brackets that let you mount the satellites to your monitor!

The key to the Companion® 3's wide-open sound is Bose's proprietary TrueSpace™ stereo signal processing circuitry. It creates an incredibly broad soundstage from speakers positioned no further apart than the width of your computer monitor. The satellites take care of the upper frequencies, while the Acoustimass® module adds impressive, resonant lows for warm, lifelike sound that most conventional computer speakers simply cannot match.

The Companion® 3 also includes a discreet, easy-to-use control pod. No bigger than a computer mouse, the pod features a volume control, headphone jack, and an auxiliary input for quickly connecting a second source like a CD or MP3 player. This system comes in graphite with silver trim.

Excellent product

Written By Logan, Harvard, MA on Saturday, November 11, 2006

My only advice, like anything audio oriented, keep track of your receipts. I absolutely love these speakers, and have now had them almost two years, but one of them is starting to go. Unfortunately they were a bday present so I don't have the receipt, the irony is that I only live about 20 miles from the Bose Corporation. So again, excellent speakers, highly recommended, just keep the paperwork for the warranty. Cause even though I only used these speakers for maybe 1-2 hours a week, they seem like they are a little prone to fade.

Great speakers

Written By Sharon, San Francisco Bay Area, CA on Monday, May 08, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Those previous reviewers are telling the truth. Bose Companion 3 is a great system to have.

I am not a professional audio guy and can not really say Bose Companion 3 is the best in the market. I only can speak of my actual experience. On the other hand, I play many instruments and quite care about the sound quality of the audio system, especially for classical music.

These speakers turn our home office into a heaven. It is so amazing to see these two tiny satellite speakers producing so much sound volume without distortion. I even can hear the music clearly in another room. Unfortuately, if your MP3 music (like those my son downloaded via internet) contains any impurities, you can hear them clearly as well.

In addition to many good things covered by the previous reviewrs, I found one more nice feature. If you tap the pod controller to turn the sound off, the Compact Acoustimass module is put in standby mode and does not consume much power.

Is this system really worth $250? I can not survey all system in the market to say it is absolutely positive. But, I am happy that I spent this $250 for something I really enjoy.

Bose Companion range + Bose in general...

Written By Anonymous, Tacoma on Monday, February 06, 2006

Ill try and keep this short - but I want to share my opinions which are not biased in anyway. I have a lot of respect for high quality audio, and I know what is bad and what is good when it comes to quality. Quality is not just about freq. response - and to be honest I dont trust any speaker company who claims 20Hz - 20Khz flat, Ive heard even £2000 non-bose with a little in consistency and some notes are not well defined.

Now on to Bose. Im glad Ive seen some positive reviews. I find the negative ones are biased, and link to that guys webpage where it says every reason why you should not buy a bose. However, the information on that site is mostly incorrect.

Bose do not use pure paper, its treated - so it wont rot anymore, and if it does - give Bose a call in 30 years and theyll replace it.

Bose speakers do sometimes sound weird with cirtain music tracks, some Pop music sounds awful on them... yet they sound excellent on a Klipsch or another brands system.

BUT, Acoustical, classical, Jazz and some other obscure live/acoustic music really does sound special on the Bose... its NOT studio sound like most people are looking for... Its natural, acoustic, live sound... well, concert hall type sound. Thus the reason for direct/reflecting and TruSpace - an instrument does not radiate sound in one direction, its almost omnidirectorional, and try and prove me wrong, you cant... an instrument is never as direct as a speaker. As you move, a live instrument barely sounds different, same as Bose speakers..... Try before you buy, thats the motto! :) Just dont rule these out because some studio PA guy told you Bose are rubbish, just listen for yourself....

Superb full sound

Written By Glen, Stockton, CA on Monday, January 16, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The full sound from the combined 2.1 speakers is nothing short of phenominal. I did combine the speakers with a new sound card (Creative Audigy2 ZS) as I had read in two other places that this mix is excellent, and WOW! By the way, the hangers for mounting the speakers on the monitor work fine, it is just that they do not use normal velcro, you need to push harder on the stuff and it makes a strong, almost positive hold. The volume is fine for one room (or nice distant listening) and there is almost no distortion at full.

Wicked Good

Written By John, down East here in Maine on Wednesday, January 11, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We folks in Maine know something good when we hear it and these speakers are wicked good. If you like music go ahead and spring, then stream or spin a little organ music or jazz or classical or any type for that matter. You will be amazed. Worth every penny.

It feels sooo good, you'll forget where you are . . Heaven!

Written By Bobby, Delaware on Saturday, September 24, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was an accident to come across these speakers. I was in search for Sirius Sat radio, comparing prices, and looking for write-up to educate myself about sat rad. While in Google, I came across Crutchfield. Their website was educational with more choices for satellite radio. Comparing, I decided on Kenwood H2W with car kit, then I saw the Bose Companion 3... pricey, I ignored and search for more. I saw the Bose Companion 2, more affordable but have only two speakers. Then there's better powered brand for about $100. Since for many years, I converted to a sets of small speakers plus powered subwoofer, I copied from Bose system. I have accumulated four of these types now and they sound great to my ears. They are on the loft, family, sun room, one on the condo.
I called Crutchfield and start the order process. I asked the Rep for opinion, he suggested, go for the Companion3. ***Finally*** I am about to talk about this speaker system. I placed it on my bed headboard, sub on the floor and small computer table beside the bed with my laptop and TV on the other side of the room. Imagine this, I have a Sirius satellite home kit playing while surfing the Web. The sound felt like you're in another place, a club? The high notes comes alive and clear, while the sub is mild not punchy. You can feel the smoothness going through your body. When I played my DVD connected to the TV. I wired the speakers system to the TV audio out. Boy! Just try it! The sub fit under the bed for dramatic effect. I love it now but still pricey for most. Worth it? It depend how well you perceive sound. If not good, the cheaper one would be ok. If you can afford it...buy it!

Bose® Companion® 3

Written By Ian, Santa Fe, NM/Rochester, NY on Saturday, September 17, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I first heard the Companion 3 Speakers in a Bose store while browsing there just for the heck of it. I could not believe the amazing sound quality and their ability to produce an excellent sound with any genre and any range. I looked at the competition, many of which are much less expensive, but the Companion 3 was so far ahead of all of them that I chose to go with the Bose. I have now had them for almost a month and I have to say that I am extremely happy with them. I listen to a broad collection of music, from Classical to Pop/Rock and everything sounds great! The bass output is incredible and I have to have it set on the low side or it creates more bass than is really acceptable in a college dorm. The Companion 3 is definately worth the extra money and with free shipping and a satisfaction guarantee from Crutchfield it is the best way to go.

WOW AND WOW AGAIN!

Written By Joe, Puerto Rico USA on Saturday, September 17, 2005

PROS:

1. I AGREE WITH THE PREVIOUS REVIEWERS. I CANT BELIEVE HOW WELL, CLEAR AND REAL THESE TINY SPEAKERS SOUNDS. THEY HAVE A STAMINA THAT IS REMARKABLE. I "TEST DRIVE" ALL OTHER MODELS IN THE MARKET AND NO OTHER COMPUTER SPEAKERS EVEN COME CLOSE TO THESE. I AM USING THEM EVEN MORE THAN MY REGULAR STEREO.

CONS:
1. THE SATELLITE SPEAKERS COME WITH NO TABLE STANDS. THEY COME WITH MONITOR BRACKETS THAT ARE WORTHLESS AND DANGEROUS (ONE SPEAKER FELT DOWN AND HIT MY HAND VERY HARD). BOSE SUGGESTED ME TRY THE OPTIONAL ($60.00 MORE PER PAIR) TABLE STANDS UTS-20B AND I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE RECOMMENDATION. THEY COMES IN THREE COLORS (WHITE, SILVER, AND BLACK).
2. THE ON/OFF SWITCH AND BASS CONTROL BUTTONS ARE LOCATED BEHIND THE BASS MODULE. BECAUSE YOU NORMALY PLACE THE MODULE UNDER THE DESK, I FOUND ME CROWLING TO OFTEN UNDER THE TABLE. I HAD TO PUT THE MODULE OVER THE DESK.
3. THE VOLUME CONTROL POD HAS NO MARK FOR SOUND LEVEL. YOU TURN THE KNOB WITH NO INDICATION IF YOU ARE AT THE BEGINING, MID OR END OF THE SCALE. OF COURSE YOU CAN PUT A HOME MADE MARK ON THE CONTROL POD.

WOW!

Written By Jean, Fairborn, OH on Thursday, September 15, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Heard the Companion 3 speakers when we visited our son and he put a Charlotte Church CD in the 'puter. Was absolutely blown away with the sound quality! With Bose's price control, soon found that the system was not going to be obtained for one penny less than the $249 posted price. Crutchfield's free shipping and no sales tax made ordering from them the only option.

When the speakers were first turned on, the bass was simply too much (the bass control knob comes turned to full bass). After that was turned almost all the way down, the sound was even better than I remembered! Unles you're an audio engineer, this speaker system -- although a bit pricey -- is outstanding! With Crutchfield's satisfaction guarantee, try it. You won't be returning it!

Companion 3 speaker system from BOSE

Written By Rohini, Ontario, Canada on Sunday, September 04, 2005

Though Crutchfield does not ship to Canada (what a shame!) it is a great site for information. After much web search and mixed reviews, I finally decided to rely on my ears and the 30-day satisfaction return/refund guarantee and got myself the Companion 3 multimedia speakers. I must admit that I was not impressed by the demo at the store and my first few hours with my system at home did not have any 'wow' moments. I mean these struck me as a fine speaker system though a bit pricey. It took a few hours of listening to a variety of material to really appreciate these. Their clarity, ability to fill the space with natural sounding, full bodied, undistorted music, with that crisp ability to handle transients and ability to listen to 'layers' of sounds with the ability to distinguish and place those in space. My appreciation about these has changed. It is nice to be able to enjoy all this justifies the price. I do hope these last me sometime which would make these really good value. One caveat: Avoid listening to low-bit rate MP3 and other compressed music. These really bring the imperfections and warble out honestly which remains hidden when using other speakers. Good speakers deserve high class sound material.

Great full sound!

Written By Adam, New York, NY on Sunday, August 14, 2005

This speaker set is amazing. Deep, full bass that sounds true. Not too punchy( e.g., too much mid-bass) like other computer speaker systems. The "true space" processing makes the sound wrap around you which is a nice feature. Also helps to clearly define the sound coming from either the left or right speakers. Overall, this is probably the best computer speaker system on the market.

Bose brings a new dimension to my desk top computer. The lows are outstanding and the highs are crisp. It is a bit expensive but if you enjoy music I think it is worth the money.
