Our take on the Bose® QuietComfort® 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headphones

by David Brown
Bose

Bose QuietComfort 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones

The QuietComfort 20i headphones let you enjoy your music distraction-free, everywhere.

The first in-ear noise-cancelling headphones from Bose®

Take your music everywhere, and leave distractions behind. The Bose® QuietComfort® 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headphones are ultra-portable thanks to their compact in-ear design. So Bose's legendary noise-cancelling technology is easier to take along than ever. They may be small, but the QuietComfort 20i headphones deliver plenty of smooth Bose® sound. And with their ability to minimize external noise, you'll be able to hear every note of your music clearly.

Stay aware of your surroundings

Powerful noise-cancellation is great for those times when you want to block out the world. But sometimes you need to be aware of what's happening around you. That's why Bose developed "Aware" mode for the QuietComfort 20i headphones. With the press of a button on the in-line remote, Aware mode passes external noise to your ears from two of the four tiny internal microphones. This allows you to hear your music clearly while still keeping aware of your surroundings — perfect for busy city streets or jogging through the park.

Bose QuietComfort 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones

The ultra-compact QuietComfort 20i headphones feature an in-line remote, rechargeable battery, and passive listening to keep the music going if your battery runs out (iPhone not included).

A focus on long-lasting comfort

Comfort is key for any pair of headphones. Bose developed their StayHear+ tips to provide a fit that's both comfortable and secure. With their soft, cone-shaped tips and stability loops, the QuietComfort 20i headphones are built for long listening sessions, even when you're on the move. Plus, the StayHear+ tips provide the proper seal required to keep external sound out for maximum noise-cancelling efficiency. Try all three included pairs to find the right fit that will keep these headphones securely in your ears as you go from the plane to the taxi or while exercising at the gym.

Built-in remote and microphone for iPhone

Want to take calls on your iPhone? The QuietComfort 20i headphones feature an in-line remote with a built-in microphone. You can answer calls with the push of a button while your phone stays in your pocket. It also lets you control music playback and volume on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad — though you won't have to crank it up to ear-damaging levels thanks to the noise-cancellation.

Dead battery? Keep listening with passive mode

The QuietComfort 20i headphones feature a built-in rechargeable battery. Just connect the included USB cable to your computer or compatible AC charger. Stuck on a plane and can't recharge? Keep the music playing thanks to passive listening mode. Just switch off the power and listen without noise-cancellation until you're able to recharge the battery.

Have an Android™, Blackberry®, or Windows® smartphone? Then check out the Bose QuietComfort®20 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones.

From our Bose QuietComfort® 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones review:

Part of the beauty of music is that it has the power to take you out of your present place and transport you somewhere else. The Bose® QuietComfort® 20 headphones set the stage for this phenomenon by eliminating the outside world from the picture before you even press play. They make it that much easier to get lost in your music.

Features

Overview: The Bose QuietComfort 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones combines the audio performance of the Bose IE2 in-ear headphones with the patented Acoustic Noise Cancelling technology. The QC20i comes with an in-line remote/microphone that is compatible with Apple i-devices, including iPhone 3GS and later, iPod touch (2nd generation and later), iPod nano (4th generation and later), iPad, iPad 2, MacBook, and MacBook Pro models 2009 and later.

Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphone Technology: The patented Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphone technology in Bose QuietComfort headphones provides full-spectrum noise reduction for a better audio experience. Microphones on the outside of the earbuds actively monitor what you hear, including unwanted outside sound. The difference between the unwanted sound and the desired sound is then electronically processed, creating a correction signal that acts to negate the unwanted noise. The speaker within each ear-cup is then fed the correction signal. This signal, combined with the passive noise reduction of the StayHear+ ear tips, dramatically reduces the outside distractions that reach your ears.

TriPort Technology: Bose proprietary TriPort technology allows the drivers of the QC20i headphones to create deep lows while keeping the headphones small and lightweight. TriPort technology, combined with Active EQ, give you lifelike sound for your music, videos, and phone calls.

StayHear+ Ear Tips: The Bose headphones come with StayHear+ silicone ear tips in three sizes (Small/Medium/Large) to help assure a more accurate and comfortable fit. The StayHear+ ear tips offer greater in-ear stability during exercise and other active sports. Advanced materials and design allow the tips to nestle inside the bowl of the ear, while also naturally conforming to the ear's upper ridge. The natural oblong cone shape of the ear tips provides a gentle seal that helps keep unwanted ambient noise out. StayHear+ ear tips also are designed to remain more securely on the headphone itself.

Aware Mode: The Aware Mode temporarily turns off the Active Noise Cancelling to allow you to hear ambient noise while continuing to listen to your music. Whether you're crossing the street, waiting on airline gate announcements, or just wanting to be more aware of your surroundings, you can engage the Aware Mode by pushing a button on the in-line remote.

In-line Remote/Control Module: The QC20i gives you control over your headphones and your music. The 4-button in-line remote/microphone is compatible with Apple i-devices, and features volume up/down, answer/end call, voice commands, music/video functions, and Aware Mode. The microphone enables you to make phone calls and perform voice commands with your iPhone. The control module contains the rechargeable battery, and includes the power switch for Active Noise Cancelling and LED status indicators.

Rechargeable Battery: The QC20i's Active Noise Cancelling is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery in the Control Module. The battery is charged with the supplied USB cable in approximately 2 hours. A fully-charged battery provides approximately 16 hours of battery life. Even if the battery is exhausted, you can still use the headphones without Active Noise Cancelling.

Clothing Clip: The included clothing clip help keep the headphones in place when you're on the move. Use the clothing clip to fasten the cable to your clothing, for convenience, stability, and to help manage the cable. This can be helpful during rigorous activities or when using the headphones in a single earpiece configuration.

Storage Case: The headphones come with a small carrying case that protects your headphones and cables when not in use. The case has a small mesh inside pocket for small items, and a zippered closure.

Bose QC 20i headphone

Written By Markus, Hawaii on Wednesday, June 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

One of the best noise cancelling headphones. Good sound, and comfortable enough you forget you have them on. Just got back from a 8.5 hour flight from Korea and had a chance to try out the Bose 20i that I recently purchased. Extremely satisfied with the purchase. I've got a set of PSB M4U2 that sounds better than the Bose but the noise cancelling, comfort, and portability can't compare to the Bose 20i's. They are so comfortable you forget your wearing them. So much easier to doze off on long flights without the over the ear cans pushing into the side of your head. My wife tried them for a while and preferred the Bose to her Sennheiser NC headset. Sound was good, not as detailed as the PSB's but more than adequate for the environment it's intended for. Build quality looks good but expect the cables to eventually wear with the acute bending necessary to put them into the too small case that is included. Found a neoprene zip case 2x as large to allow the cables room to roam and not crimp. I intend to use them only when flying, as I want to keep these till the rechargeable battery no longer charges. Baby them a little and you should get your moneys worth out of them.
Pros:
Great NC, Fantastic comfort, Best in Portability, Good sound.
Cons:
Cables life is suspect, especially if you cram them into the too small case thtas included. Planned obsolescence? $$$$

A Way to Go

Written By Gridley, Asheville, NC on Thursday, May 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The best thing about this product is twofold: noise reduction and quality of sound, on all types of recordings. But while the ear pieces stay in the ear, I find that they come apart easily, particularly when removing them. That's quite an aggravation and diminishes their worth to me.
Pros:
Noise reduction, sound quality
Cons:
Earpieces are flawed

Peace and quiet in miniature!

Written By Helenmarie, Huletts Landing, NY on Saturday, April 19, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I hate to carry bulky ear phones on trips and found these ear buds fabulous for travel. They really give outside noise reduction yet fabulous sound in my ears! With the touch of a lever I can communicate with the outside world quickly when needed.
Pros:
Comfortable for sleeping to eliminate outside noise such as snoring or city sirens and traffic disturbance. Easy to adjust for phone use.
Cons:
Had to try different bud size, for me small, but no big deal. I have always used over the ear type so this still takes some getting used to. Wish they cost less and had longer warranty in case battery fails? Need to inquire about this.

The perfect cure for open offices

Written By Mr. Spock, NYC on Friday, March 28, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these on a colleague's recommendation to drown out the cacophony of our new "cool" open office seating. They work brilliantly! Once again I get some peace & quiet and can get work done. And I just have them on noise cancelling, don't even listen to any music. BTW because our bodies are not perfectly symetrical, I use the "medium" size for one ear and "large" for the other.
Pros:
Your personal cone of silence
Cons:
Expensive

Great buy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I don't know how all these people have trouble putting their headphones in their ears. Use a smaller size if they aren't fitting, mine slap right in and are comfortable as anything. I love how the headphones don't have to use the noise cancelling to work, I have a pair of Beats studio headphones that require the headphones to be turned on which uses batteries, so if the batteries die, goodbye music. These headphones 1. don't use batteries but has a rechargeable unit and 2. DOESNT HAVE TO BE ON. so if your battery dies, you still get music. In ear noise reduction is awesome, doesn't block out what the over the ear products can, but still amazing nonetheless. work really well on airplanes and with loud roommates.
Pros:
Lightweight No need for battery life to get music Amazing Bose sound Awesome noise cancelling Very comfortable (three different sizes for the ear piece
Cons:
Cost.

Evidently Amazing!

Written By Butchdog, MN on Thursday, March 20, 2014

Gave these to my wife for her birthday, it was a long shot. No perfume, no flowers, just these. She enjoyed them for a couple days at home and exclaimed over and over how great they were. Then after a long flight she said they were absolutely incredible and far exceeded her expectations. I wasn't too worried about going out on a limb to buy them. They are, after all, Bose!
Pros:
Great fit, excellent sound, superb noise canceling

phenomenal

Written By Diane, Indianapolis, IN on Wednesday, March 12, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've long been skeptical about "noise-reducing" headphones. Noise-reducing earbuds concerned me because I don't like anything inside my ears, like earplugs. But the low, rumbling sound of a generator at my new workplace was threatening to give me migraines, so I decided to try out these Bose 'buds. All I can say is, Wow! They really do work. And they don't go inside your ear (like earplugs do). Expensive, but worth it.
Pros:
Eliminate low, rumbling noise Music still sounds great Can still hear people calling out to you -- you're not completely isolated from the world around you
Cons:
Takes me several tries to get the earbuds fitted in my ear just right (have to keep rotating them around)

Great earbuds

Written By Pat, WV on Tuesday, March 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These earbuds work great. I have trouble keeping earbuds in my ears, but these stay put. They are comfortable to wear and easy to carry around. The noise cancellation works great. The sound is good--I mostly listen to podcasts, but my music sounds fine too. I thought that the noise cancellation control would be a pain to deal with but it's not. I used to use the QC-15 headphones and they worked fine too but if I wore them for a long time them would get hot and uncomfortable. These are more comfortable than the headphones. I like the aware button and the controls work fine with my ipod.
Pros:
Good sound, good noise cancellation and comfortable. Battery goes a long time on a charge.

Finally a noise cancelling earphone that really works. Comfortable and more importantly, easy to carry around.
Pros:
Small portable size.
Cons:
The noise cancelling component could have been better designed...problem is that it hangs on and creates potential problems when walking around. Plus I foresee wiring issues because the carry case it comes with is a bit small.

Peace and Quiet

Written By jdd, Boston, MA on Monday, March 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I fly a lot and finally tired of the constant drone of airplane engines. Further, I wanted to improve the sound quality over standard iphone headphones. These do the trick.
Pros:
I don't look like a wannabe DJ or Lando Calrissian's right hand man Episode V. They are pretty comfortable and lightweight.
Cons:
Doesn't completely eliminate all noise and when the noise cancellation is turned off, the sound sounds a bit like being in a tunnel. The rechargeable battery is kind of like an extra appendage.

Bose® QuietComfort® 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headphones

Written By Dustin Y, New York on Wednesday, February 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I first saw this I was excited, because the QC-15s have a few cons (Bulkier, doesn't work without battery). So this was like the best of passive noise canceling (like my -now stolen- etymotic) plus Bose's active noise canceling tech, which, at least on the QC-15 is superb.

I am an Android user (and have a series of iOS + Apple products like this very Macbook Air). I develop software so I need iPhones, iPads and Androids.

When I got my QC-15, I remember going to an App Store with my MBAir to try whether the mic would work when connected in the computer. It did, so it was awesome, because I could use it to Skype with people without using the integrated mic in the computer while wearing the awesome headphones.

I later gave my QC-15 to a very good friend who couldn't afford them and decided I was eventually going to buy new ones.

I finally got these new QC20. As an Android user, I picked the Android version. That was my first mistake.
Pros:
- They are light and very portable. The battery doesn't really bother much (but it has a few caveats). - Moderately easy to fit and less tiring (for me) than the full in-ear-canal (Etymotic stuff). I flew 16 hours straight and they didn't really cause a major problem (tho I could feel them by the end). - Easy to sleep with these on a plane while tilting your head. Still some vibrations can be heard, but with the others is really hard for obvious reasons. - The USB charging is nice (Boeing 767
Cons:
With the 3 sizes (S-M-L) ear tips, you might not find an appropriate one for your ear size. Mines (I was using Med) would slowly pop out after a few hours. Not a big deal, but I wish Bose would offer more choices (Like Etymotic does). - The battery is not heavy, but heavy enough to cause disconnects if it hangs from a loose plug (like on a plane where the plug is abused a few times a day). - The position of the battery in the "cable" is a win-loss situation. Sometimes you feel like it's great

Big result in a small package

Written By Howard M., New York City on Friday, January 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At $299, it is pretty pricey, but certainly worth it. The noise reduction is impressive, but even with this feature turned off, the results are impressive. The sound quality is great, as I have come to expect from Bose. I prefer these to the over-the-ear headphones for their portability and comfort. The sound quality is about the same. The one thing I would have liked, is for there to have been a way to charge the battery by plugging directly into the wall, rather than into a computer or UBS connection. Also, the carrying case could have been a bit larger. As it is now, I have to stuff the headphones into the case.
Pros:
See review above.
Cons:

Disappointing for the price

Written By M., Philadelphia, PA on Tuesday, January 14, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was ready to be wowed. I wanted to like these much more than I did. The unusual fit means they don't seal out noise, so if you like to listen to your music quietly there's a fair amount of sound that bleeds in. I used them at the gym, on the train, and walking outdoors. They didn't help much with wind noise. I'm used to using earbuds that have a snugger fit and, even without noise canceling, did a reasonable job at blocking outside sound. Plus, the weight of the dangling mic-controller tugs at the wires (even using the shirt clip) so they can loosen in the ear. The sound lacks richness in the middle and bottom. Overall, they were disappointing for the price.
Pros:
Lightweight, moderately effective at compensating for (though not killing) outside noise.
Cons:
Fit isn't that comfortable; faint hissing; sound quality is good not great; price; battery can't be replaced.

must of turned them off and on a dozen times before accepting how well they worked. i am a contractor with many changing noises thru the day, don't like over the ear, too isolating and in the way. these don't fall out and i can hear people talking to me and of course still connected to the phone. if they last they are worth the cost.
Pros:
stay on comfortably during activity, not in the way, noise cancel works well
Cons:
price, only if they don't last, battery life unknown

bose quite comfort 20i acoustic noise cancelling head phones

Written By Patrick, Nashville,Tn on Sunday, January 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these for my 25 year old daughter for xmas. She says they sound great and the noise canceling properties work very well. She says the sound quality is fantastic. one thing she pointed out to me was that they have a rechargeable power supply and she thinks that if the battery goes bad then phones are no longer usable. I have not done research on that matter. I would think that a new power supply could be installed. I also do not know how long the battery will last. I think they are over priced. I personally have a $39.99 set of Sony ear phones that have a killer sound. When I have them in my ears I cannot hear what is going on around me. Of course I usually have them cranked relatively loud. I think Bose makes a good product . My daughter loves her Bose headphones therefore Merry Christmas.!!

Great sound. Built very well.

Over priced.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I frequently travel for work and use the Bose QuietComfort 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones while on the plane and when working in the airport. They are amazing; with or without music they tune out the noise around me so I can focus. I also have the Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones, but I think the 20i earbuds are even more effective, plus they're MUCH smaller to carry around. They're worth every penny.
Pros:
You won't hear babies crying, engine noise, or talking when on a flight or other noise when wearing them anywhere else. Also, their portability makes them an excellent choice over the larger versions.
Cons:
When using them while talking on the phone it can be difficult to hear yourself so you might not be able to tell how loud you're talking. Can be tricky when in a public space because you may be shouting, but can't tell. I usually only use one earbud in when using it with my phone so I can get a better sense of the volume of my voice.

I've been upgrading to each newer version of the Bose QuietComfort headphone. I like this one the most so far due to its size. It reduced the weight and space in my backpack. It's more comfortable to sleep with it than the over the ear model.
Pros:
size and weight

Best of the Best

My second pair for my staff Christmas party. Has to be the best ever. I used this on a 12 hour flight and it was in my ear for 10 hours, so comfortable for music and movies and complete silence when I was sleeping. All the other companies say it's noise cancellation earbuds but non can compete with the Bose QC 20i. Not cheap but very well worth the money.

New Flagship Headphones

Written By Glenn N, Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday, December 01, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

And I thought the QC 15 was the best noise canceling headphones. No ways! Maybe it's the best over the ear headphones but the QC 20i are by far the best sounding and noise canceling headphones ever made by Bose. And it's less $$ than the QC 15! I never ever thought an excellent in the ear noise canceling headphone could ever be produced. Boy, was I ever wrong. I have given away all my other ear buds and headphones to my friends because I will never use them after experiencing the QC 20i. Best purchase I've made in 2013.
Pros:
Perfect fit in the ear. Great comfort and tremendous sound quality. Not bulky like QC 15 Works when powered off unlike the QC 15 headphones
Cons:
Trying really hard to think of some cons but unable to.

Bose QuietComfort 201 Headphones

Written By TurkC, Mesquite, NV on Tuesday, November 19, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been looking for new headphones for awhile and had settled in on th Bose QuietComfort 15s but have held off due to the size and dissatisfaction in the past with the comfort of over the ear headphones. I travel extensively and have become fed-up with the noise on planes so I decided to move ahead. I first called Crutchfield for an opinion of the 20i vs. the 15. I expected to hear that the acoustic response, which is the most important factor for me, is superior on the QC15 but the consultant actually told me he felt the performance on the QC 20i was a little better than the QC 15. I have called for an opinion a few times over the last year and every consultant had rated the QC 15 best. I bought the QC 20i and recently used them for the first time on a cross country flight. I LOVE THEM. The sound quality is great, the comfort is great, the noise cancellation is excellent. The QC 20i significantly improved my flight experience.
Pros:
Sound quality Comfort Noise cancellation
Cons:
As with all ear buds, tends to get tangled when packed up.

Great headphones. Much easier to wear for extended periods than the Bose QC15. Audiophiles will quibble with quality but for me it's fine.
Pros:
Small. Comfortable.
Cons:
Slight reduction in sound quality.

Another amazing product from Bose

Written By EK, Santa Monica, CA on Sunday, September 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used to have the Bose QC15 as my noise cancelling headphones during my long transatlantic flights. While great for engine noise cancelling, after a couple of hours the QC 15 started to feel uncomfortable and were bulky in my carry on. The QC20i are supercompact, feel great and they do a noise cancelling job, equal to the bulkier QC15s. As for the sound quality, they are excellent. They are Bose after all. They might be a little on the expensive side, but if you want a compact noise cancelling set with great sound quality, these are the ones to get.

Unbelievable

Written By baugustine, Ventura, CA on Sunday, August 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely amazing. I travel by air frequently for business and have already had two sets of QC2 headphones which make the plane experience tolerable. Bought these two weeks ago, looking for something that fit in my laptop bag better. Expected lower performance due to their size. Boy, was I wrong. They are BETTER than my QC2. I had a flight to Chicago from LA and these eliminate all outside noise, especially the high-pitched jet engine and airflow frequencies. The ear canal piece acts as plug, so all you get is crystal clear, concert hall sound. The External sound feature really shows how much these cancel. Way to go Bose!
Pros:
Compact, high-end sound

1 question already asked

I am interested in purchasing these for my husband to replace an over the ear type that he uses for travel but also hope these could help with a snoring problem as well. Most noise canceling earphones do not work for lower frequencies like snoring. Could someone tell me if these might be helpful in getting a better nights sleep with a snoring partner? I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks again. Debbie [ Debbie  Dec 29, 2013 ]

  • Probably not. They do a great job with back round noise but . They will reduce it I'm sure. They. May. Be uncomfortable to sleep with if you sleep with your head against a pillow. [ DENNIS   Jan 01, 2014 ]
  • I have only taken one plane trip with these earphones and have found my SURE ear buds work better and are more comfortable. Disappointed in this purchase. W.B. brown [ William   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • who`s snoring ? ,if the person snoring is wearing the earphones,I think the wearer will hear there own snoring,I wore my phones on a plane behind the wings and the engines went silent when i turned the phones on ,so i dont think you will hear your partners snoring if you are wearing the bose noise cancelling earphones. i hope that made sense . [ ROBERT   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • Thank you anyway. [ Debbie   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • I bought the QuietComfort 20i headphones about two months ago and I love them. I travel (fly) 2-3 times a week and they work great not only cancelling the noise of the plane but the audio fidelity is great. Also, the size is much easier to deal with than the over the ear headphones when you're carrying other stuff in your briefcase. As to your question, these are larger than normal ear buds. I think that if you sleep on your side, as I do, they would be jammed into the ear and would be uncomfortable. [ TIM   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • Have.no idea.. [ DAVID   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • Good question. I own two sets of noise canceling earphones but have tried neither for the problem of snoring. The real question here is: who is the noise canceling for, the snorer or the snoree? Depending on the sleep position of the wearer noise canceling earphones should do an excellent job. I will research this question further.... [ MIDTOWN   Dec 30, 2013 ]
