Our take on the Bose® SIE2i sport headphones

by David Brown
Bose

Add Bose® sound to your workout routine

Looking for great-sounding headphones that can stand up to a demanding workout? Bose SIE2i sport headphones are comfortable, sweat-resistant and durable, so they can follow you to the gym, on the trail or anywhere in between. They may be tough, but they'll handle your music with care. Bose's exclusive TriPort® acoustic headphone structure delivers rich, full sound that will keep you moving. The proprietary StayHear® tips make sure these headphones stay put, even when you're in constant motion.

Control music and calls on your iPhone®

If you have an iPhone or iPod®, the SIE2i sport headphones allow convenient control over your device without having to interrupt your workout. The in-line remote gives you easy one-touch phone answering capability, while the built-in microphone means you can have clear conversations without holding a handset while trying to maintain your pace on the treadmill or stationary bike. Volume and track controls let you adjust your music on the fly, so you can skip that slow song and pump up the volume for those final reps.

The Reebok® fitness armband

The SIE2i sport headphones come with an exclusive Reebok® fitness armband, so your mobile device stays safely secured while you're on the go. The Reebok armband perfectly complements the SIE2i sport headphones' short cable, so no excess wires trip you up. But if you need a longer cable, Bose includes a 26-inch extension, so you can choose the length that works for you. When your workout is over, stash your headphones in the armband, and you've got an instant travel case, ready when you are for your next adventure.

Features

Overview: Bose SIE2i in-ear sport headphones are designed specifically for exercise, both indoor and outdoor. They offer the same audio performance as other Bose in-ear headphones, but can withstand the rigors of an active lifestyle. They have been optimized to resist moisture from the weather or from sweat. The StayHear silicone tips fit comfortably, but snugly into your ear, and are designed to stay in place during strenuous activity. The SIE2i also includes an in-line remote/microphone that enables control for iPod and iPad, and hands-free communication for iPhone.

StayHear Ear Tips: The SIE2i headphones include three sizes of silicone ear tips (S/M/L) to assure a more accurate fit that's comfortable and stable. Advanced materials and design allow the tips to nestle inside the bowl of the ear, while also naturally conforming to the ear's upper ridge. StayHear tips also are designed to remain more securely on the headphone, as well.

Note: You should not attempt to wear the headphones without the ear tips.

TriPort Technology: Like other Bose in-ear headphones, the SIE2i sport headphones feature Bose's acclaimed TriPort technology. The headphones deliver wide-range sound, with deep, natural lows and crisp highs. Even though they are in-ear headphones, the SIE2i are not noise-canceling. They are purposefully designed to keep you aware of your surroundings while you are running through busy city streets or highways.

Cable and Extension: The SIE2i has a 32" cable that's long enough to reach your portable media device, and short enough that you're not constantly fighting excessive length. A clothing clip is attached to the cable so you can keep it out of the way. If you need additional cable, a 21" extension is included.

3.5mm Connector: The headphone cables have a slender, straight 3.5mm plug that fits directly into most digital media players, including iPod and iPhone models with hard cases, as well as laptops and portable CD and DVD players.

In-line Remote: The SIE2i has an in-line remote that allows you to conveniently control your music on your iPod or iPhone during your workout. It is also compatible with iPad, as well. You can also easily switch between calls and music when used with your iPhone.

Note: The SIE2i remote and mic work with iPod nano (4th gen and later), iPod classic (120GB, 160GB), iPod touch (2nd gen and later), iPhone (3GS and later), and iPad. Audio is supported by all all iPod models and iPad.

Armband: Included with the SIE2i is a matching green and gray Reebok fitness armband that holds your device during exercise. It can hold your iPod, iPhone, or most any portable media device. It has a clear window to let you see the device's screen and operate the touchscreen controls. There's also a separate pocket for your keys.

Pretty good running headphones

Written By BradM, Alexandria, VA on Saturday, May 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really good sound, for a pair of sports headphones. Sound isolation is ok, but detail is pretty nice and kids and lows are well represented. The remote doesn't always skip songs as it should. Otherwise, a solid set for working out.
Pros:
Sound, fit,build quality
Cons:
Remote is iffy. Bright orange.... like all sports headphones, they have to have a loud color for some reason!

I had an older version MIE1 headset. Since the wires broke off, I wanted to upgrade to SIE2. Compared to the regular MIEx models, I feel that SIE2 are more durable. But to my ears, I felt the older MIE1 was better sounding headphones strangely!
Pros:
Durable wires; Better placed controls

So far these are a winner

Written By Anonymous, Arlington, VA. on Monday, March 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you spend a lot of time in the gym or on the road running, the price of these headphones becomes a bit more reasonable. I have had all kinds of headphones and these are far and away the most comfortable. They sound just about as good as a comparably priced set of Velodyne's but fit way better. They don't get saturated with sweat and cut out. The build quality is really good. The accessories that come with the headphones are nice. The extension cord that comes with the headphones give you all the length you could possibly want. If they hold up like I am hoping they will, then I would say they are the best set I have owned in 20 years.
Pros:
Comfortable. Nice sound quality. Good accessories. Rugged build quality. Stands up to sweat.
Cons:
A little pricy but but you seem to get what you pay for.

Bought these for my daughter for Christmas. Great Crutchfield service and the headphones are great. She wears them at the gym mostly and she's really happy with the fit and sound. They are not noise reducing headphones but they have a sound awesome and I didn't really care about noise reduction.

Awesome In Ear Headphones

Written By KevinW44, Tacoma, WA on Tuesday, December 03, 2013

Compared to my Apple in earphones these are just awesome. The difference is night and day! Although even my Sony Walkman MP3 player headphones were much better then my Apple ones, these Bose model is excellent. The sound is so crisp and clear no matter what genre of music I have played. They are comfortable to wear once you get used to how they are made to go inside your ears. The center rubber keeps wires from getting tangled. Color is stylish without being gaudy. I've seen other so called brands claim great sound for more money then these and they always fell short in my opinion.
Pros:
Comfortable to wear, very excellent audio quality, wires don't tangle so easy like other designs. Stylish to wear.
Cons:
None

Great set of speaker phones and does everything I need
Pros:
Design, sound quality, compfort, color choices and features
Cons:
Pricey. Case too small. I have an I phone 4S, and the rebox arm band case that was sent does not fit my phone, but there were no choices on the Crutchfield website for sizes of arm band. Bose actually makes a I Phone 5 case, contacted them and they sent me a replacement case free! Fits perfect.

Written By BrianM, Roanoke, VA on Sunday, September 01, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tired the Polk sport headphones and the iPhone control fell apart after 2 runs. Sound quality was also no better than my $20 Sony. Bose has a far superior product. The design is phenomenal and has clearly been field tested by folks that run and sweat. You barely feel them in your ears. The length of the cord and placement of the control is just right and feels durable. The sound quality is just what you'd expect from Bose. Well worth the premium price compared to other options.

Great Product - GREAT SUPPORT

Written By AndrewS, Hopewell Junction, NY on Wednesday, July 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sure you pay for the name, but its a great product : sounds great, stays put even during extreme sports and best of all GREAT Support. Bose really stands behind their products. I would highly recommend the sport headphones I originally bought the standard and they lasted about 2 months and then after a bike ride the mike stopped working (assuming it was the sweat) then after about a year something happened and the sports stopped working. One call to Bose and have a new pair on the way and the replacement pair comes with a a NEW 1 year warranty. I asked the tech at Bose and if they fail oustide of warranty they will replace at 50% off.
Pros:
Great Sound, Great Quality, GREAT SUPPORT Can comfortably wear them for hours.
Cons:
Cord can get tangled but if you put it in a pouch or case it usually isn't a problem.

I purchased these headphones to replace another pair and I wanted something that was of high quality, easy to use, comfortable and versatile. The Bose Sports headphones met the mark in every way and maybe best of all, for me, is that they stay in place during some very intense workouts.
Pros:
Style Fit Comfort Sound Quality Phone mic
Cons:
The extension plug could be placed higher, is a bit lower than I would prefer.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Outstanding comfort + legendary Bose quality

Written By DavidN, Grosse Pointe, MI on Saturday, April 27, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After several weeks of painful research to find headphones that will stay put during strenuous and often sweaty workouts I have found the answer. These Sport SIE2i are the most comfortably acoustic headphones to date. I bought the orange and love the color! + easy to find in your gym bag. Only negative for me was getting used to the fit, and minimal bass response. Overall I highly recommend those looking for comfort, quality and Cruthcfield's outstanding lifetime customer support. Thanks guys!!
Pros:
Comfort, quality, legendary Bose sound and reputation.
Cons:
Learning curve to get the proper fit. Could use richer and deeper bass. Reebok fitness holder is fair at best.

BOSE falls short of expectations

Written By JeffP, Curtice Ohio on Monday, January 07, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The expected BOSE sound quality is there, but the packaging is definitely representative of trying to cut costs. There was no storage for the headphones and the cord is actually two pieces, which is great for when you want to use the arm holder for your MP3 player, then you don't have this long cord bouncing all over. They have changed how the plastic/rubber ear pieces fit in, instead of just the soft rubber bud having different sizes, they created plastic pieces that clip onto the bud and wedge into your ear. I have not determined whether this is all positive yet as I have only ran with them twice. They do stay in place very well though.
Pros:
BOSE sound quality is what you expect, and they deliver.
Cons:
Storage or case for headphones is missing.

Comfort Plus

Written By dsperk, Columbus, OH on Tuesday, November 13, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to use with an iPhone while I travelled. I was looking for a pair of phones with good sound but where I could hear my surroundings. These fit that bill perfectly. But the best thing about them is the comfort. The soft wings on this earbuds keep them in place in a way that I barely feel them.

The sound quality is solid for headphones that are not in ear or covering the whole ear, better that other earbuds I have used. They aren't as dynamic as my Shure SE510s in ears or my Sennheiser HD800 full size headphones but their purpose is different - to be used while out and about. .... and the comfort is unsurpassed!!!!
Pros:
Comfort. Can hear surroundings while still having good sound quality. The mike works well without any sound of the wiring rubbing against my clothing.
Cons:
As expected dynamic range not as great as expensive over ear or in ear headphones but they aren't intended to be that. The coating of the wires is rubbery and they can get all tangled up pretty easily. Not sure about durability.

After years of struggling with earbuds that fall out and in-ear headphones that become uncomfortable, these are a treat. They rest just at the entrance to the ear canal and the pliable holder fits neatly into the folds of your outer ear. The sound quality is excellent, including good bass.
Pros:
Comfortable, secure fit Excellent sound quality Arm carrying pouch included
Cons:
None so far

Best work out headphone

Written By hef321, Houston, TX on Sunday, October 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is what is expected coming from a BOSE. I was skeptical about the design on how it will stay in my ear. I have been reading review for over 2 months and doesn't seem to be able to find a pair without someone complaining about them. BOSE never fail me before and I am not expecting it will fail me here. It lives up to its high expectation and hence the price. I sweat a lot when running and anywhere between 1 to 5 miles a day. Even though it had only been a few days, they holds up really well compare to the apple ear buds I had been using. It never falls out, stay in your ear very comfortably. I can even sleep with them and not worry about the set as you would from the neckband type or Over the head type.
Pros:
Perfect for work out. It will never falls out plus it is sweat resistance.
Cons:
The Price is expected for a BOSE product and I feel it is worth it. I gave one star to noise reduction because it clearly say "not design for noise reduction" on the back of the box.

Best Sports headphones

Written By JaneD, Boise, ID on Saturday, October 20, 2012

I had the MIE2i for 2 years. After being the stuffed in a pocket or gym bag one of the wires broke. I do a lot of power lifting and strongwoman type weight lifting. These headphones are the ONLY ones that stay in my ears no matter how much I'm jumping around or moving.
Pros:
Stays in your ears no matter what.
Cons:
Would be nice to have inline volume control.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm an avid Bose user and one thing I've been lacking for a few years is a great set of earphones to use while working out. The still fairly new gel in-ear grip is one of the best features of these earphones because they really do keep the buds in place provided you choose the right size for your ear. Since the grips are rubber and kept in place by tension mostly is better to go for the bigger size for ease of mind that the buds stay in place while sweating. The sweat resistance of the inline control put me over the moon as I have lost two previous sets of earphones(MIE2i and MIE2) due to shortages caused by workout sweats. Bose high quality sound and durability features in these SIE2i's paired with the accompanying reebok arm band have answered a long time request of mine.
Pros:
*Comfortable *High quality *Durable *Stay in place *Easy to clean *Reebok arm band is a plus *Cool looking *Pretty good warranty
Cons:
A bit on the expensive side. Not a fan of Neon Green or Orange

2 questions already asked

Does the in-line mic work with the samsung galaxy s4? [ guy  Dec 06, 2013 ]
1 answer
  • The mic on this unit is only designed for use with Apple devices. You'll want to look for a pair of headphones that state they are Android compatible like the JBL Synchros S200a. [ Jeff Staff  Dec 06, 2013 ]
Is the wiring on this headphone(SIE2i) stronger and or thicker than the non-sport versions? [ chas  Jan 09, 2014 ]
5 answers
  • My wife uses these and loves them, with no issues ever. I don't have the non-sports version so I do not know if one is stronger them the other. But looking at my wife's they are fairly heavy.. [ JEFFREY J   Jan 10, 2014 ]
  • Chas, These are the most durable, comfortable sport ear buds I have owned. The sound is classic Bose, rich and delivers solid bass. The cord is better than most, in regards to not getting tangled. Some brands use a Kevlar cord, but I've found these handle most challenges. Hope this helps! Dave [ DAVID   Jan 10, 2014 ]
  • Yes, the covering is holding up well. I use them almost daily. Great for running and working outside. The original set cracked flaked. I have not had a problem with the sport version. great product [ ANTHONY S   Jan 09, 2014 ]
  • No, it's the same thickness. [ CHRISTOPHER   Jan 09, 2014 ]
  • I cannot compare as I only have the version listed. However, one of my wires broke after 10 months and sent it to Bose. They replaced it at no charge but it took 2-3 weeks. I also took out a Squaretrade warranty (real cheap) and they have terrific service (if needed). The sound quality is commensurate with the price. [ DASUMAKIM   Jan 09, 2014 ]
