Features

SoundTouch 20 Music System: The SoundTouch 20 Music System connects to the Internet and your computer via your wired (Ethernet) or wireless (WiFi) home network. Once you are connected, you can choose from select Internet radio and music services, and play music files stored on your computer. You also have the option to control the SoundTouch 20 from your Apple iOS or Android device, via Bose's free SoundTouch Controller app; and even stream music directly from your iOS device via AirPlay.

Note: You can link up to four SoundTouch music systems together for a multi-room/multi-source audio experience. You are able to play the same music source or different music source on each SoundTouch system, using the SoundTouch app on your computer or iOS/Android device.

Custom Engineered Sound: The SoundTouch 20 Music System employs custom-designed transducers to produce clear mid and high frequencies, so vocals and instruments sound lifelike. The SoundTouch 20's advanced ported enclosure helps it produce punchy bass. Proprietary digital signal processing keeps the performance evenly balanced at high or low volume levels.

Wireless or Wired Network Connection: The SoundTouch 20 Music System offers a wired (Ethernet) or wireless (WiFi) connection to your home network. The system features a rear-panel Ethernet R-J45 port and built-in WiFi. The system's network connection must be setup initially from your Windows or Mac computer using the Bose SoundTouch App and the included microUSB-to-USB cable.

SoundTouch App (for Windows/Mac computer): The SoundTouch app for Windows & Macintosh is required for initial setup of the Bose SoundTouch music system. The SoundTouch app lets you setup and control the Bose SoundTouch system from your Windows PC (XP/7/8) or Mac computer (OS X 10.6.8+). Simply install the SoundTouch app onto your computer on your home network and use the app to setup the Bose SoundTouch system to your wireless or wired home network. Once setup is complete, you can use this app to explore Internet radio, select online music services, or your music library from your home network and computer on the Bose SoundTouch music system.

SoundTouch Controller App (for Apple iOS/Android): Once you've completed the setup using the SoundTouch app on your computer, you can download the free SoundTouch Controller app (from the iTunes Apps store or Google Play Store) onto your Apple iOS (iOS 5.0+) or Android (4.0.3+) device so you can control the Bose system from your mobile device. You'll be able to control music streaming from Internet radio, available online music services, and your computer's music library.

  • Internet Radio + Pandora: The SoundTouch system lets you play Internet radio stations from around the world. You also get access to the Pandora Radio online music service. Currently Pandora is the only online music service available, but more music services will be added in the future.
  • Music Stored On Your Computer: The SoundTouch 20 can play back MP3, WMA, and AAC music files that are managed by iTunes or Windows Media Player on your Windows or Mac computer. You computer must be connected to the same wired or wireless home network as the SoundTouch system.
  • AirPlay for iOS devices: You are able to stream stored music and music apps from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to the SoundTouch Wi-Fi music systems via AirPlay. You can also stream your entire iTunes music library on your laptop/desktop computer using Apple's free Remote app for iPod touch/iPhone/iPad. Your iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad must have iOS 4.3 or later installed and connected to the same wireless home network as the SoundTouch music system.

Note: You cannot stream music stored on an Android phone or from apps on an Android phone to the Bose SoundTouch system.

Six Presets: You can personalize six presets to your favorite streaming music services (Pandora) and Internet radio stations, or playlists, artists, albums, and songs from your computer's music library. The presets can easily be set, changed, and accessed directly on the system or with the free SoundTouch app on your computer or iOS/Android device. You cannot set presets for AirPlay or the Aux input.

Aux Input: In addition to WiFi network connectivity, the SoundTouch 20 is fitted with a rear-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for connecting almost any portable audio device with a headphone or audio output.

You Will Be Disaapointed

Written By Matt, San Francisco, CA on Wednesday, August 20, 2014

If you buy this system you will be disaapointed. I have the SoundTouch 20 and the Lifesytle 535. I bought them so I could listen to music via Wifi throughout the house. I am very disappointed. The SoundTouch has only 5 preset stations and the phone app does not allow for a user to search for other Pandora stations. You can only do that using the application on your desktop. The combined system cannot stream music from Spotify, Beats or ANY other streaming music system other than Pandora. The Soundtouch and Lifestyle system cannot connect using Airplay. I can only airplay to the SoundTouch but not both systems at once. Not being able to using Airplay means that I cannot use my phone to play my music in my house. You can only connect to one ITunes music library; this is a serious flaw because the rest of your family cannot access their music. We had to move all the kids music to my wife's iTunes account. When I finally connected to the music library, I had to scroll though the names in an alphabetical order because there is no search for feature. If you have a large music library and you want to find a song or artist you need to scroll one page at a time until you finally get to the name. The connection to my router did not work. I had to have the Bose installers out to my house three times. There is nothing remotely cutting edge about Bose.
Pros:
decent sound
Cons:
hard to use with other Bose systems

SoundTouch 20

Written By DaveM, Berks Co, PA on Sunday, July 06, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since we have poor FM reception here, many of the Philly stations I used to listen to were out of reach. The Bose SoundTouch 20 has filled the void. It was easy to set up by following the Bose instructions; the presets are easily interchangeable; and the sound is even better than expected from such a small unit. While it is not labeled as Bose "Portable" model, it is easily moved from room to room. Did I mention the sound is great? The depth of field is especially noteworthy considering it's size. An on-line HD channel sounds terrific! Very pleased with this purchase and Crutchfield's typical service and delivery.
Pros:
Sound quality, portability, ease of set up and use, handy remote
Cons:
None so far

Super easy for this tech phobic to set up, only took about 15 minutes. Bose instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Did my research and the sound is truly awesome---the best out there for the size of the system.
Pros:
Sound quality, ease of set up, preset buttons and remote are a real plus, size and handle "groove" make it easy to move from room to room.
Cons:
None

Soundtouch - can not use headphones?

Written By T M, Little River, SC on Sunday, December 29, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic and easy except for a major fault in that there is no earphone jack on any of the Soundtouch devices. One of us listens to internet radio all night. Now we both have to listen or go back to keeping the phone or tablet by the bed. Disappointing.
Pros:
Easy set up _ a little learning curve but very doable to control from all of our phones, computers, tablets etc. great sound of course.
Cons:
No headphone jack. Only 6 presets...

Bravo Bose

Written By Gary, Oregon on Saturday, December 28, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I rarely offer product reviews because so few products meet my expectations. The Bose SoundTouch 20 is an exception. I had it set up in a matter of minutes connected to my Pandora account, Windows media library, and my favorite radio stations with wonderful Bose sound quality. I live in the country so getting over the air FM comes with lots of static and fade. Listening via the Internet along with streaming of my 250+ CD library was the perfect solution. Having Pandora channels as well makes this a no brainer. Like another of the reviewers one of my favorite FM channels was not available but was soon added after I made the request on vtuner.com

I considered the Sonos system but the Bose won out since it also includes an IR remote which is handy when the smartphone is not available and the PC is in another room. The Sonos system requires a smartphone or PC control which is not always convenient in my listening location.

Pros:
Great Bose sound quality, easy setup, convenient remote.
Cons:
It's hardly a con but I soon realized that the 6 presets on the remote quickly fill up. It's easy to change them but having more presets would be nice.

Great sound but limited functionality

Written By Richard, Malvern, PA on Sunday, October 13, 2013

When I saw the Bose SoundTouch advertised, I neglected to follow my usual practice of reading reviews before purchasing electronics and raced out to the local store and bough the SoundTouch20. Set up is very simple and once set up, the sound is up to Bose standards. The problem is that Pandora seems to be the only service available for the SoundTouch, and if one wants to connect to an internet radio station, s/he is limited to those in the VTuner roster of stations. And sadly, Vtuner's offerings are limited. My favorite station is MVY radio - Martha's Vineyard. No luck. I also like to listen to several specialized NPR stations - no luck. As a former faculty member at Oregon State University, I like their station - no luck. And no access to Sirius/XM, Live365, or Spotify. I spoke with the Bose reps and they assured me they are working on all these things. They suggested I contact Vtuner and ask them to add stations. I did - and alas, no reply. Guess I'll stick with my Grace Mondo. Sound is not the greatest, but what good is great sound if one can't get the station one likes.
Pros:
Great sound and very easy set up
Cons:
Terribly limited listening options and no prospects for improvements.

Could someone please tell me how to listen to my SoundTouch 20 system with headphones?? I can't get answers anywhere! Thanks!! [ Sheryl  Dec 29, 2013 ]

  • It would be even better to be able to plug in headphones. We bought 3 units to use throughout the house. Once it is set up with our favorite stations we control it with the remote or controls on the unit. We did not want to need multiple appliances in the bedroom at night. Could not have taken much more to add a headset jack. Almost all audio equipment comes with it. [ Thomas   Dec 31, 2013 ]
  • There is no headphone jack. It's not designed with that in mind. Since most of the control is done with either a PC/Mac or smartphone it's better to use the headphone capabilities of that device as the source. [ Gary   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • There does not appear to be any way... What a huge oversite. We have talked to 2 people at customwr service at Bose and they seem surprised we asked. Bose is, after all, known for it's speakers sovevidently they did not think we would want to use earphones! One of us listens to satellite radio all night - the other does mot want to. Bose suggested we keep a phone or tablet by the bed _ which was exactly what we were doing before we bought the Soundtouch - so we are back to that at night. Very disappointing. [ Thomas   Dec 30, 2013 ]
