Our take on the Clarion CX501

Why settle for a smaller receiver when you've got room for more? Clarion's CX501 CD receiver strikes a handsome pose in your double-DIN dash opening, and you can tailor its look to your vehicle's interior by choosing from 728 possible illumination colors. Throw in iPod® and iPhone® control, built-in Bluetooth® for hands-free calls, plus a 2-line display, and you're ready for the open road.

Talk hands-free

It's never a good idea to fumble for your phone while you're driving. Built-in Bluetooth lets you conduct calls without taking your hands off the wheel, as you talk naturally and hear your caller over your speakers. After initial pairing, the CX501 connects to your phone automatically every time you turn on your car, so you can leave your phone in your pocket or purse and concentrate on driving. Plus if your phone or another device supports it, you can stream music straight into the stereo.

Great for your iPod or iPhone

When you plug your player into this receiver's USB slot, you can control your iPod with the large, central control knob, plus view song info as it scrolls across the 2-line display. You'll enjoy sound quality that's superior to plugging into an auxiliary input, and your player stays charged while you drive.

Enjoy great sound

You'll find some useful tools for adjusting the powerful sound delivered by the Clarion's built-in amplifier. The versatile Magna Bass EX bass boost will add depth to your sound without getting muddy. The 3-band parametric equalizer rules over the simple tone controls found on most factory radios, offering pinpoint control over the highs, mids, and lows. Three sets of high-power, 4-volt preamp outputs send a clean signal to aftermarket amps and subs. A built-in low-pass filter lets you control the character of your bass, while a high-pass filter trims the extreme low bass out of your front and rear speakers so they play more efficiently.

Use the convenient front auxiliary input to plug in a Dock & Play satellite radio, an MP3 player, or any other portable audio player. You can also play your store-bought and recordable CDs, plus discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. You can add an HD Radio tuner to dial in the great sound quality and expanded programming choices of participating AM/FM stations.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Great stereo. Have had it installed for approximately 3 weeks now and no complaints.

I have always loved this Clarion Stereo since my dad bought it for his Jeep Wrangler! And now he is giving it to me and his sound ordinance compact subwoofer for my Honda Civic 03! Those 2 combined make music so much fun to listen to! This stereo is really great in every way! The only con is the Bluetooth setup is a lil complicated, but once you do that it's pretty simple to use! Can't wait to put it on my car :D

Pros: Changing lights Great Bluetooth Easy to use

    Cons: Bluetooth setup

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was the third Clarion deck I've purchased. The first 2 were single DIN, but this time I decided I wanted to fill up the whole hole in the dash. I'm really glad I did, it has mated with my Kicker speakers, amp, and subwoofer. I put this into a 2001 Suzuki Vitara, and it installed alright, had to do some modificatios to O.E. mount brackets to make all 4 screws line up, but otherwise went well. Setting up the Bluetooth on my own was impossible, but I found a video on Clarions site that makes it a world of better. Still a lot of work to pair a phone, but only the first time. Overall extremely satisfied with this deck and I'm glad I did not listen to local stereo shop telling me to go to a different brand.

Pros: Beautiful, mostly easy to use

Cons: Blue Tooth setup a pain in the A**

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a nice upgrade to my factory system. I had a few questions and the Crutchfield customer service was very helpful. The wiring harness they sent with me worked perfectly. I had to make a few splices in the wiring harness that the instructions were very good. I also bought the maestro, to allow keeping the steering wheel controls, and its' installation was also very easy. I contacted Crutchfield advisors 4 or 5 times just to make sure I had everything correct. Each time I got through quickly to customer service and got in touch with someone who was very helpful and knowledgeable. I really like the new stereo and it works great with my iPhone 5s. All in all a great experience with Crutchfield I would do business again.

Pros: Ease of installation and quality of the product. Customer service was great as well

Cons: The adapter they sent for the faceplate was a little too tight for the opening in my Nissan Altima. I had to file down the top piece a small amount to get it to fit properly. The auto pairing from the Clarion would not work. I had to contact customer service and they walked me through the procedure to manually pair it. Once that was done it now automatically pairs every time I enter the vehicle.

This radio has a lot of features for a great price. Bluetooth phone and streaming audio. Auxiliary USB charging on the front input. This is the second stereo I've bought of the same model for two different vehicles great value, great sound. I've also had friends buy one off of my recommendation.

Pros: Great streaming ability for Bluetooth audio and for phone. RMS Power Highest for the price, bright display.

Cons: It doesn't seem to recognize some of my phone callers names in the history or phone book.

Another high quality Clarion product. I have always enjoyed my previous Clarion receivers, and this is no different. Looks, sounds, operates, great.

Pros: Great sound, fairly easy to use, has all the necessary features, functions great right out of the box. Display options, colors, text, etc. all look and work great. Install was easy with supplied instructions. Looks and fits great where my factory stereo used to be.

Cons: Instruction manual is difficult to follow. Had to YouTube product demos to get Bluetooth set up. Also won't sync more than 100 phone book entries, and no choice about which ones get synced. For an adaptor at this price, to use steering wheel controls is lame, but it's par for the course I suppose.

Cons: Display can be hard to see during the day, and radio reception is not the best

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really loving this new unit. Installation was a snap in my 2008 Honda Pilot (with the provided adapters from Crutchfield), and works perfectly with the iDatalink Maestro adapter for the OEM steering wheel controls. Only issues are purely aesthetic. First is that visibility of the display varies widely from color to color, even playing with the contrast settings. Some colors simply just are not visible during the day. The second is that I wish there was a way to show the clock while also showing the artist/song info under the Sirius mode.

Pros: Great quality sound, hardware, and functionality. Bluetooth works great.

Cons: Display can be hard to see without incessantly monkeying with the controls.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've only owned this unit for a month but it's an extraordinary value. I drive a 2008 Nissan Frontier Nismo and it fits perfectly in the dash. Bluetooth is great (i stream Rdio/Youtube/Soundcloud/Bandcamp/Beats and use my iPhone 5s daily) and it provides ample power to my upgraded Rockford Fosgate speakers (front and rears). Really couldn't have invested better money into my vehicle. I'm tech savvy and my only slight beef is that the setup interface for the Bluetooth setup and Custom Audio Settings aren't all. But I did some checking on the internet and figured it out in 15 minutes so no big deal really. It's set to auto-connect now and super seamless. Would recommend to anyone for the $

    Pros: Value, Quality, Functionality

    Cons: Setup

    Clarion CX 501 "THE BOMB"

Mr F from SLO CA on 2/16/2014

I bought the Clarion CX501 for a few simple reasons.... First it was going in a 2003 Honda CRV and I wanted a radio with a LED display that was easily readable (as eyes are going bad) looked as OEM as possible, and without a lot of stupid & cheesy LED's that looked cheap! As one of the 5 people left who still listen to FM radio (and talk radio on AM) this radio ended up being the perfect fit! Honda OEM radios are made by Clarion anyway and this one is built as solid as the OEM one . Radio has many adjustable settings and sounds way better then the stock one, no Sub added just upgraded the speakers. Read the other reviews as to the Bluetooth, Satellite radio, Aux etc. The LED display & button lights are adjustable to match the interior lights on your dash and the contrast on the display can be adjusted to darken or lighten the readout. I have no problem seeing it during the day! I found the menu to be easy to maneuver through also, not a problem as some have stated . Crutchfield deal was hard to beat as they throw in all you need! Happy camper here!

Pros: Looks as OEM as you will find. Display is excellent & sounds great!

Cons: Could not find any yet.

Great low cost unit. A little time with the manual and I was able to sync my iphone and customize the look of the receiver.

Pros: Great features for the money.

Cons: Only thing I found missing is that it would be nice to have a USB port on the back if the receiver to conceal the wire for the iPod or phone jack.

    2013 Nissan Altima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nothing necessarily wrong with this unit but you should get more bang for your buck. I ordered this because of the integrated front mic; that's pretty much the only thing that sets it apart. The sound quality was disappointing; I didn't notice an improvement over my stock unit (with new speakers) and it's only a 3-band equalizer that is difficult to tune and 3 presets that are underwhelming. You get the impression that the unit is capable of producing good sounds but is programmed poorly. Also, it doesn't display track information when streaming bluetooth and it doesn't even display radio station information on the tuner. Plus the bluetooth doesn't auto-resume when you start the car back up. I recently installed a Pioneer FH-X700BT in my wife's car that sounds much better even over stock speakers and has more equalizer options and displays track and station information. I've exchanged the Clarion for that same Pioneer for my car. The Pioneer is about $30 cheaper than the Clarion and in my opinion is a much better value for the price. Crutchfield customer service and support, as always, are fantastic.

    Pros: Integrated front mic.

Cons: 3-band equalizer. 3 equalizer presets, none are great. No track information when streaming bluetooth. No station information on the tuner. Bluetooth doesn't auto-restart. Sound quality is muted, not an improvement over stock.

    Better Instructions

    2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit into a 2003 Silverado, replacing the factory BOSE system, and bought the units required to maintain the factory integrated features like steering wheel controls and I though, auto volume control based on interior noise - turns out that was a BOSE feature. Very confusing to install all these components together, you need to bring your best electrical game and really pay attention to the wiring and instructions for each black box. The bluetooth set up instructions leave out the fact that you will need the 1234 pin code to get it to work, and the phone book feature - even though it loaded - does not work. I needed to disconnect my battery after installing the stereo to do some other work and had to re-set the stereo and go through the entire set-up all over again! Overall the sound is pretty good and the FM reception seems better than the old BOSE, controls are logical and easy to reach in the dark, aux input works well with the i-pod and CD player works fine over bumps. Clarion does have a Youtube instructional channel that is somewhat helpful. OK radio with less than ok instructions and bluetooth features.

Pros: good sound for the money, very good fm reception

Cons: instructions and bluetooth operation very poor

    Good but should be better.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace a glitchy Kenwood HU. The Bluetooth feature was the most important to me and the Kenwood was sporadic at best. The BT feature on the Clarion works great. The only issue I am having is uploading my contacts. This unit does what it says it does. But it has the potential to be so much more. Especially at this price point. It should have a built in HD radio tuner and Pandora controls for Android. The sound is great. The EQ controls are a bit confusing and there are no explanations of what all the settings do. I just adjusted them until it sounded right. I don't like having to go through all the different sources to get to the one I want. Especially the ones that aren't even connected. I wish the unit had a stand-by mode, but I guess turning it off works too. The unit looks good, basic but good. I like to have the color scroll through all of them. I have been told that calls sound very clear on the other end. Better than the Kenwood. I am a bit disappointed that there is no station info when listening to the tuner. I have not used the ipod connection much yet. Even my old ipod works but I was having trouble searching for an artist alphabetically. I can't say I am disappointed overall, I just think Clarion should put the features in this unit the should be there. The controls should be a little easier to use.

Pros: Great sound, Bluetooth works great. Looks great.

Cons: Missing features like HD radio and Pandora controls. You need car stereo experience to really know how to use this HU.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first Clarion unit, and overall I'm pleased. Initially there were minor issues with USB/iPhone compatibility (see below), but otherwise a good experience. Ultimately the USB input completely died, but I've had it for 21 months now. For ~200USD I got almost 2 years out of this unit, and it's still trucking along fine without the USB input. I'm looking to replace now since I use the USB 90% of the time, but I'm tempted to buy another one out of laziness for wiring/installing/learning a different unit :-)

Pros: Bluetooth functionality is great, and great EQ/Xover options with my subwoofer. I don't have a lot of words here, but it did everything I wanted it to do almost flawlessly :-)

Cons: My #1 beef was with the USB input. Intermittently the high end (8kHz and above) would drop out, and only on the USB input - I'd have to turn off the car to get it back. Finally the USB input completely died, showing Error 7 with any device (Nano, 4, 4S). To be fair, I should have got on the ball with the warranty before it expired. #2 No rear USB or AUX input, but I got creative with a 90-degree USB cable on eBay and tucked it into the dash. #3 Hard to see in bright sun, but not a big d

Not bad but not good either

ScottyB from Anna, OH on 12/24/2013

Have had this for 1.5 yrs. and have had various issues for the entire time I have owned it. First off, the Bluetooth would start skipping and the only remedy would be reconnect it by turning it off on my iPhone and restarting it. Second I have had a piece of noticeable dust in front of the LCD. Annoying as can be. And finally now my unit defaults to USB no matter what input I have it set to it switches to USB. Like I have something plugged in but I don't. Good things about this unit are the speaker level high pass filter. Made it nice for adjusting against my sub. And the built in adjustable low pass filter as well. Tuner worked fine, the iPod control was ok. Has it's issues as well. Multi color illumination is nice to be able to match or contrast the dash lighting. Washes out in bright sunlight, and with polarized glasses. Lastly the built in microphone is hard for others to understand. Have to talk very loud and clear for it to be effective.

Pros: iPod control with Apple cable not an extra Adjustable high and low pass filters

Cons: Screen washes out in sun light Bluetooth skipping Dust in front of LCD

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second Clarion unit, and so far I have not been let down. Have both installed in '92 Accords, the first one still works flawless after nearly three years, no reason to expect less from this unit.

Pros: Several cool display colors to help match your dash colors. 3 sets of RCA outputs. Double-DIN.

Cons: My only gripe is having to hit the source button to go thru all the media types. Would like to be able to disable AUX, or not have CD show if there is no CD in the unit, or USB if there is nothing connected to it, etc.

    2007 Nissan Altima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I actually liked the unit for the most part. Once I figured out how to get it to allow me to control the music from my iPhone (instead of via the head unit) when it was plugged in, it got much easier to use. The color changing thing is just a gimmick that grows old pretty quick. I also don't like the fact that you have to press and hold the source button to get it to turn off. I would prefer a simply push-on/off button that reacts quicker. Good list of features for this price point however, just 6 months out of the warranty period the display started flaking out. Tapping on the display brings it back on temporarily but it eventually goes blank again. Crutchfield sent us to Clarion who basically told us, "Sorry, it's out of warranty". Very disappointing. The only offer they gave us was to ship it back for repair but they would be charging us a crazy diagnostic fee (I think it was like $75). So basically, don't buy this unless you're fine with purchasing another one in 18 months.

Pros: Good range of features for the price point. Worked well with my iPhone.

Cons:'s unusable after 18 months. Need to press and hold source button to turn unit off.

This deck is pretty good except the instructions. The instructions are terrible. However, once it's set up it works well. I have used the bluetooth with an HTC HD7 and Nokia Lumia 710 with no problems streaming or talking. I am going to buy a different brand for my wife's truck so that I don't have to get the manual out each time I want to make an adjustment like pairing a bluetooth device. Looks good in my matrix. Just unhappy with the quality and ease of use with the instructions and set up...shouldn't be so difficult.

    Pros: Looks good, variable color.

    Cons: Instructions are terrible.

    2005 Toyota 4Runner
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For those of us that don't need an In-dash GPS Receiver/Media Box with apps, this unit is perfect. It has everything I need as far as connectivity in my vehicle and with my other devices. Smartphone integration means I can do virtually everything the $1000+ units can, just without the "wow" factor they bring. Sat Radio, Ipod and USB compatibility are great. It looks good, it's cheap, and it sounds even better. There are some drawbacks to this unit though, and I will rate them from 5-1 below, with #1 being the biggest and most important oversight Clarion made when designing this unit: #5- No Rear USB input #4- No option for external microphone #3- Difficult to use. Actually, very difficult to use. The instruction manual is as terrible as others indicate as well. #2- No Scan feature- Really??? It will preset scan, but I can do that myself by hitting the "Next" button on my steering wheel or on the face of the unit itself. I need to have the radio auto scan available stations when I drive through new parts of the state/country, why can't this unit do that? #1- Bluetooth audio drops. It's to the point where I just won't use the Bluetooth function at all which is a pity since the ability to play phone music, GPS voice guidance, and take phone calls all while keeping my hands on the steering wheel was the exact reason I bought this unit. Clarion has threatened a firmware update early in 2013 to address the Bluetooth issue, but this has never happened.

Pros: Good Sound Quality Looks "Factory" Remote for those who need it Great functionality Pre-outs

Cons: Bluetooth issues- big one No auto-scan feature

Great features for a great price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put this in a 2005 Subaru Outback Sedan; I knew what I was getting into with the install, needing the JDM surrround/HVAC controls, which I purchased separately from another source. Worth every penny; this unit has all the features I need at a fabulous price. I didn't want a touchscreen, as they 1) look dirty with use and 2) did not want to have more distractions for a soon-to-be-driving teen daughter. I have no problems with the Bluetooth, even with the sunroof open, nor with dropped calls another reviewer mentions. I love the ability to direct connect the Clarion with the Sirius tuner (one cable does it all). Having had several Clarion head units prior to this, I had no problems navigating the menus. Like almost all aftermarket units, it can be difficult to see in bright light; will probably tint the windows to help. I don't use the FM tuner (which is hooked up to the crappy stock window film antenna anyway), so can't comment. Has greatly improved sound even with stock speakers (soon to be upgraded). Like the preamp outputs for future expandability. I have had several Clarion units and have never had an issue with reliability. Would definitely recommend and buy again. Customer service at Crutchfield was, like the past twenty years, exceptional. Thanks!

Pros: Tons of features that work well for a great price; looks even better installed than in the catalog! Bluetooth sound quality is excellent, as is the display for sat radio info.

Cons: I do wish the backlight color of the controls was independently selectable from text color, but that's really all...

    Less is More

DEK from York, PA on 8/19/2013

Two years ago I was looking to replace the OEM radio in my 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander. I opted for the Clarion VX401, thinking I would like the DVD, nav, rear camera capabilities. What ensued was a long, frustrating experience. Cranky, erratic controls and menus, a display that washed out in bright sunlight, Bluetooth that was almost unusable. And I only used the DVD once in two years. I was ready to dump it and move on. The only reason I even considered the CX501 is that the steering wheel controls and Sirius radio were already Clarion-specific. So I took the plunge, and I'm glad. The controls are much more intuitive and reliable, the Bluetooth works, even the steering wheel controls seem more reliable, something the VX401 could never seem to use reliably. The big center knob is convenient, and my wife loves it. I matched the display color to the OEM red, and it looks great. It's easier to select pre-sets, now I have three different sets, which are easily accessed. This is a great lesson in selecting an aftermarket head unit. Think twice before buying a low priced DVD receiver with all the bells and whistles. First, you may not need them, and second, they may not work well anyway. I already had a perfectly good Garmin, so I don't need nav, and this unit suits my needs perfectly, and looks great, at half the price.

Pros: Looks good, works well, particularly with steering wheel controls and Sirius.

Cons: None to speak of, a good buy.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2006-2008 Nissan 350Z owners know how fragile the interior center console paint is. Scratches or rubs at the slightest touch. After only 17,000 miles use, the OEM Bose Head Unit looked awful. Sounded OK but looked just it did not have Bluetooth, USB or any streaming capability. I picked the Clarion for its looks and features and was not disappointed. Looks and sounds awesome. Popped in a button sized (really small) 16GB USB flash drive and that's all I really need (except for ESPN Radio) for my tunes. Additionally, while I had the center console apart, I repainted the entire thing. What a difference!! This Clarion is a great buy. a little clumsy to set up but that is because of all its features.

Pros: USB, Streaming, Appearance, Large Volume Knob, Adjustable Lighting Color

Cons: Text could be better...smaller and more clear.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was excited to install this in my 2013 Jeep Wrangler. Wanted something that looked close to factory. This unit had all the features I wanted, however they didn't function like I hoped. The BT would skip and cut out constantly when I listened to music and the BT didn't work well for making phone calls. When using the USB port to play music from my iPhone it would skip 3-5 songs at once when try to skip to the next track. It would start to play the next song but then skip ahead 5, and would go back and forth. Def not compatible with the iPhone even though it claims it made for it. When it did play music I thought it performed well but had to return because of the other problems.

    Pros: Looks and sound

Cons: Bluetooth sucks and doesn't work well with iPhone.

    heterodyne noise

audiophile from Phoenix AZ on 8/6/2013

I hesitate to be too hard on this because I have not tried the competition at same price point. I also have keen ears that detect flaws. This radio at a certain point in time after warranty but not very old or overused developed evident heterodyne noise. Install shop confirmed it, so it was not just my keen hearing. The noise got worse over time. Replaced it with a Pioneer unit which is manifestly superior.

Pros: nice appearance in double din slot.

    Cons: developed heterodyne noise.

Installed for about 3 weeks now, and I couldn't be happier. This is directly powering my Poll Mobile Monitors, with no amp in between...far better than the stock unit and much louder. If you don't need a high-power system, this a a great receiver. Fairly easy to use and quite flexible for later upgrades. Still working out kinks with the bluetooth for my cell phone, but otherwise a great place to start. Need to tweak the frequency settings, and see how everything holds up for a year or so. Looks great in the dash and isn't obnoxious.

Pros: Cheap, sounds great and flexible for future upgrades.

Cons: Contrast adjustments could stand to be a little brighter. Owner's manual needs to be a little more thorough.

This unit was easy to install. Pairing was a little difficult and navigation is difficult. The unit plays music very well when connected from my phone with USB, however when using Bluetooth, music skips very badly like a scratched CD. If I toggle back and forth from the tuner to Bluetooth, the music might start playing normally, or might not(annoying). The integrated microphone has worked well so far with no problems as I have read in other reviews. The installation kit fits nice, I was worried about a small gap on the top of the unit, but it is okay. The unit sounds a lot better than my stock stereo.

Pros: Easy to install, looks, sound.

    Cons: Playing music with Bluetooth.

My plan was to start with replacing the head unit, then speakers, then get an amp. No need for speakers or amp - the Clarion brought my factory speakers to life! Only negative is the cheap, no fit-worth--a-dang adapter kit Crutchfield gave me. What a piece o junk. The instructions suck too - they tell you to cut off ALL the mounting tabs, and 2 steps later tell you to mount the faceplate with the tabs-Which you just cut off!

    Pros: Sound quality!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ugh. I hate this receiver. My 2002 (2002!!!!!) stock honda receiver was better than this junk. Terrible reception compared to the stock receiver. Playing CDs, MP3s, it sounds fine, but there are so many indications of poor design. As stated by many others, the Bluetooth sucks. The Bluetooth feature as well as all the good reviews was the main reason I chose this model. But any time I use Bluetooth my call either gets dropped or the other person can't hear me. I'm better off using speakerphone. Another gripe is the buttons and functionality. Some things aren't intuitive at all, and some things are just way too difficult. You'd think it would be easy to tune your way through FM stations. Just spin that front dial and whiz your way through, right? Quickly assign all your favorite presets? Nope. You need to click the tune-up (or tune-down) button, one station at a time. Just don't click too fast or it won't register it. Want to turn the power off? You need to press on the source button... for 3 seconds. Let go too soon and you'll have to cycle through 6 or so different sources (radio / cd / aux / sat / etc) before getting back to where you were, then you can press for 3 seconds and turn the thing off. Or just turn the volume down, that works better. (srsly how to do you screw up the on / off feature?) .

    Pros: Sounds good

Cons: Reception terrible compared to stock receiver Bluetooth connection is terrible. Button functions (power, tuning) are awful and not well thought out.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this head to replace the factory unit in our 2009 Corolla. We/I use this unit primarily for the Sirius Satellite Radio (Not XM). This eliminated the use of my external plug n play unit witch would lose sound quality using just the FM frequencies on the factory unit. Activated Sirius through the website which was easy to do. All I did was switch units seeing how I already had a scrip. Definitely going to purchase another one soon to in my Tacoma.

Pros: Great had unit at an exceptional price.

Cons: The user guide does not tell you everything. Some of the features you actually have play with it to figure it out. Depending on your choice of backlighting color, you may be able to see it in the sun.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace the OEM stereo in my 2003 Volkswagen Jetta GLI. I wanted something that looked like it belonged in the car, not too flashy but still cool. The look of this fits perfectly. Turns out the default red backlighting option is a perfect fit for this car. I got the unit so that I could have Bluetooth connectivity with my iPhone 5 for music steaming and hands free calling. Both work nearly flawlessly. Once paired with the phone it automatically connects within about 15 seconds of turning the key. Sometimes I don't even take the phone of my pocket, though there are occasional connection issues then. I keep my phone in my left pocket, so it might be fine in my right pocket. The built in mic is excellent. People can tell I sound different, but not bad at all. The noise canceling is very good. Siri and dictation work pretty well with it too, though you still have to press the home button on your phone to activate it. There is no button on the unit that activates Siri. The play/pause and forward/back buttons work flawlessly with the music app, pandora, even NPR streaming. It all just works, and works reliably. My only complaint is that the display is kinda clunky. Someone commented its about as good as your digital alarm clock at home, which is a pretty accurate description. But, on the other hand it's classy and fits the OEM look just fine. I use the display on my phone for info anyway. Installed myself, Crutchfield customer service was very helpful.

Pros: It works and works consistently. Bluetooth connectivity is excellent. Sound quality is a great improvement over my OEM unit. EQ settings are good, especially the bass boost. Tight and clean. Hands free calling works great, built-in mic totally does the job. Makes installation much easier. Looks classy, isn't overly showy. Interface is elegant and uncomplicated. I'm very happy!

Cons: Display is a bit clunky and outdated. Dot matrix display would be better, but its not a deal breaker. Menu navigation takes a little learning, but then makes sense. FM radio reception could be better. More crackly than my OEM unit, but again not a deal breaker. I can just stream the same station from my iPhone via Bluetooth! Wish it had a mute button.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit overall is solid. Before I purchased the clarion, I read probably 250 out the 300 reviews on here. The biggest complaints that I saw were the display being to dim and hard to see, navigating through the menus, and the bluetooth mic not havign very good quality. This is hpw I feel about these items. 1. The screen is not the brightest and most visible screen that I have ever seen, especially since I am used to Pioneer products who have extremely bright and colorful displays, but adjusting the contrast and color does make it viewable during the day.Its not amazing, but you can see it. 2. Navigating throught the menus is not the easiest on this unit. It doestake some getting used to and seems to go against your natuaral instinct of button pushing. I feel like they could have made it much simpler. The manual is clear on how to operate the unit though. 3. The bluetooth mic is fine. I have called 3 different people while using the bluetooth mic and all of them said I was clear and loud. They compare the quality to being in between having the phone against your cheek and talking and speaker phone. But I was definitely able to be heard. I did a comparison with my buddies 2013 Honda CRV with the factory Bluetooth mic and the clarion was much better sound quality. Overall the unit is solid.

Pros: Easy bluetooth connectivity, Quality sounding bluetooth, 6 channles of output

Cons: Screen isnt as bright as it could be, menus can be tricky to navigate at first

Great product. The handsfree calling w/ Bluetooth has great audio quality. It looks very cool as well. I have to give Crutchfield props for their support staff. I called them 3-4 times about this and they were very helpful. They walked me through troubleshooting everything, from wiring to dismounting a metal bracket inside my car to make the unit fit. They knew where all the screws and wires were in my car. I would have been screwed had I gone with some other place to save few bucks.

Pros: Value for the money Cool design User friendly

Cons: Bluetooth music seems to skip a lot. Plugging in the USB cable is much better. I think it's silly that Bluetooth audio does not automatically play my music if I turn off the car and back on. It just connects and I have to press play Bluetooth music does not display the name of the song playing or any info. just says bluetooth. USB does. The display can either display the clock or the source/info. the source/info should have a small clock somewhere.

And of course a little help from tech support. It has a sleek design which will not dissapoint and its colors are vibrant at night. I love the usb port for my ipod but i dont think im going to use it because i can now play my ipod over bluetooth which was incredibly easy to pair both. I agree the menus are kind of annoying but its barely noticeable with all the other great features of the radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm happy with this CD player. I chose it primarily because the chrome accented knobs match my interior controls perfectly and the display and button colors can be adjusted to match. The display is plenty bright, contrary to many reviews. I can see it just fine in daylight with sunglasses on. Plus it has a Contrast Adjustment and an Auto-Dimmer with headlights. So my gripes. Internal Crossovers can not be set to specific channels. I have 2.5" and 3.5" speakers running off deck power, and 6.5" and 6x9" running off an amp. It would be nice to set one crossover point for the deck outputs, and another or full range for the amp. My other gripe, is it was advertised to work with my factory steering wheel controls when matched with the PAC Canbus module (sold separately). Well the module did integrate the controls to the deck, but they are not the same controls as factory. The track adjustment and volume switched sides of the wheel. Volume is on the left and track up/down is on the right. Opposite of factory. . My preset button is now a mute. I think the only button that stayed the same is the Source button. So do my steering wheel control buttons still work? Yes. Do they perform the functions they used to? No. Last thing, the 4 Volt Outputs might not actually be 4 volts. My sub amp gain range is 200mv to 3.5v, and I have to turn the gain up about 3/4 to the 200mv side. If they were 4 volts, I'd think my gains would be almost completely down.

Pros: Looks Good. CD/Aux/iPod/Satellite/HD Radio available all in one, SQ is good

Cons: Less than advertised 4 volt sub output. Steering wheel controls changed. Needs more crossover flexibility.

I just installed this head unit in my 2006 mustang. I took out the old shaker 500 (also known as the skipper 500) and stock speakers and what a difference this made.I do not care much about the bluetooth or the usb port but the improvement in sound is great. I replaced all four speakers with kenwood kfc-c6894ps speakers and i cant describe how good the car sounds now. Total installation time for the headunit was two and a half hours (crutchfield instructions are on point) and for the speakers another two hours. Original settings are not great since they deliver music without any depth and overemphasize the bass but by going into custom mode you can find the right balance. Great headunit, specially for the price

Pros: Great sound quality, specially for the price. It has a new look with a retro feel to it so it fits right in with the rest of my dash

Cons: Manual is rather useless but by playing around with it a little bit you can figure it out. Standard settings for sound are not really impressive but by going to custom and tweaking them the sound system comes to live.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This replaces a Kenwood KDC-994 stereo I had for a couple years. The kenwood was nice enough, but it's user interface sucked. There are no radio-preset buttons so you had to do everything through the remote and watch the screen to make changes. One of my requirements for a new stereo was physical buttons so I could change radio stations without studying the display. The Clarion fits this perfectly. On top of this, the front USB jack & aux in are a bonus and the bluetooth works much better with my iPhone than the kenwood did. The Kenwood would take about 45 seconds to sync with my phone when the radio turned on. The clarion syncs within 2-5. Sound quality is great. Bluetooth setup seemed ok to me. Installation was pretty easy thanks to Crutchfield's instructions. I did not end up using the connector kit for my truck as the installers who put in the kenwood replaced the factory standard wiring with some other kit. But it was easy enough to use their wiring for the new radio.

Pros: Easy to use. Great sound. Wonderful bluetooth support. Customizable color display so I could set it to a color I can see with my sunglasses on and doesn't blind me at night.

Cons: I have 1 LED segment that sporadically does not light up as strong as the other segments. It's not a big deal but that's the only issue I had. No display of song title/artist from radio stations (something the Kenwood did have).

Bluetooth had me singing the Blues

David G from LA on 1/17/2013

All I really wanted when I purchased this car stereo was at least a simple AUX jack for streaming my Pandora, Spotify etc. I thought the Bluetooth was simply a bonus. It took me a little while to figure out that plugging the iPhone connector into the USB port only allowed me to take control of my iPod and not Pandora and that control was rather clumsy. I ended up just getting a 1/4" to 1/4" jack and streaming Pandora over AUX for over a year with decent sound quality, almost never tried any of the other sources. After I installed the stereo (Crutchfield has great instructions BTW), I couldn't figure out how to get the Bluetooth connected so I left it as is and stuck to the aux jack, even for phonecalls (much to my call recipient's chagrin). Eventually I took about 30 minutes and FINALLY got Bluetooth connected. Here's the issues I had: *Bluetooth is too easy to disconnect. Accidentally hold the wrong button down too long and you're disconnected - rather laborious to reconnect *Bluetooth CONSTANTLY cuts in and out while playing music. I could sometimes temporarily ameliorate this by changing source to iPhone, then changing it back to CX501 *Bluetooth quality is not good for phone calls (or music). Gain all the way up and caller on the other end said it sounded like I had the windows down *Menus are a pain to navigate through, especially being spoiled with GUI everywhere *CX501 won't stand up to abuse should you *ahem* get frustrated with the bad Bluetooth sound quality

I'm not really an audiophile, so I'm more interested in the functionality, and the hands-free phone usage and usb connection are a huge improvement over Pilot's stock radio. Only downsides I'd say are that the manual is almost useless and changing the settings is somewhat laborious. But that's a tradeoff for a sleek display, so I'll take that.

I read the reviews on this radio and it had ALL the features I wanted.ESPECIALLY built in bluetooth with no seperate goofy microphone to route to my visor. The display CAN be hard to see in bright light, but you can also change colors to make that better(I like the changing colors though) It IS hard to program(the manuel doesn't tell you how to get to GET to THAT point,it will start like not at the beginning)So it took me FOREVER to get my Iphone 4s to pair but ONLY like I said the instructions aren't super clear.I HAVE NO REGRETS though! I LOVE this radio,it was worth the trouble. I am a female who is mechanically inclined and it was super easy to install in my 2000 toyota camry(the plasic Toyota bezel was the WORST part of the install,it was super hard to unsnap)

    Terrible USB Interface

Spiff from Sacramento, CA on 1/1/2013

Be warned if you are using this with a USB flash drive, its gonna be bad. The unit has a 6 way multi-control button in the middle that has 5 of the 6 buttons do nothing when in USB mode. It will control the volume but that's it. It would have been a fantastic way to switch between songs/folders, maybe press in to go to a list of some sort, but no. They do nothing. If you have your music sorted by artist/album/song then when you are at the end of an album and you hit the next button it will go back to the first song in the album, not the next album or artist. If you just let it play out or hit the folder up/down button then it will continue on (which are numbers 5 and 6 and pretty inconvenient to hit). The only way to find a certain artist you like is to just mash the 5 or 6 button until you get to where you want, which can take a long time if you have more then 500 songs.

    Pros: Looks good, sounds good

    Cons: USB controls

I was looking for a replacement for my portable Sirius radio with car kit and this radio was the perfect solution. The built in Sirius tuner is a major plus. Now everything is contained in one unit, I don't have to remember to turn off my old Sirius tuner, and with built in Bluetooth and microphone, USB and 1/8" AUX, I have it all. I'm actually looking forward to my drive to and from work right now! Initially people had a hard time hearing me on Bluetooth calls, but I found the mic volume setting and now all is good. My Droid Razr Maxx connects automatically when I turn my phone's Bluetooth on. Sound quality is better than stock and I think once I replace the stock speakers it will be excellent. I read review before purchasing about the display being too dim, un-readable, etc... I can't imagine where those comments were coming from. I have mine set on the lightest "green"/ almost white setting and I can clearly see it even on the brightest sunny days. It is bright even on the dark blue setting so don't let that deter you. It is even clearly visible when it dims when you turn on your headlights. The only thing I wish it had is a rear USB so I could just keep an iPod in the glove box, but I knew that it didn't have one when I ordered it so I can't complain. Radio reception isn't a problem either as I saw in some reviews.

Pros: Built in Sirius tuner. All you need is the antenna add on. Bluetooth USB As good or better than stock FM reception

    Cons: no rear USB

Item arrived intact and on time, with everything well packed. I phoned Crutchfield's technical support line twice and Crutchfield picked up the phone almost immediately each time and with kind, articulate, solid answers. I was very impressed with Crutchfield's support and it affirmed that I'd made the right choice for a retailer. Some years ago, we made the mistake of having a "big box" store install a stereo in my wife's car and the workmanship was horrible. The installation of my Clarion CX501 in my own garage had a very different and happy outcome.

Pros: Good value for the price, built-in Bluetooth, USB and AUX inputs and custom display colors to match existing interior lighting. Unit sounds surprisingly good with my factory speakers, offering a significant improvement over the factory sound.

Cons: Display could be improved. Despite contrast settings, display characters that should be dark glow dimly at night and in daylight the display is sometimes hard to see.

Unit has excellent fit, looks great, but because of the concerns I've listed below, if I were beginning my search now for a new radio, I would pass this one by.

    Pros: Looks cool, bluetooth ready

Cons: I have 2 problems with this unit. First, the display is practically useless during daylight hours because of the intense glare. I can't see a thing even when it's overcast. Second, learning how to adjust the audio (bass, treble, etc) is too confusing, involving too many procedures.

I have always been a fan of clarion steros since the early 80's and have never had a complaint, but this one does not thrill me. The major problems with it are that when I use my bluetooth to my Iphone for music, it will get very choppy about once a day and can be very hard to stop it. It only does this on bluetooth and my Iphone does not do this with any other bluetooth devices that I use. Also, the radio reception is very poor and where I live I can't listen to any good stations and must rely on my phone or CD's. I spend a lot of time driving and this gets real old. I think they just try to put too many features in this radio.

Pros: Nice looking, great sound when it is not choppy.

Cons: bluetooth music becomes choppy, very poor radio reception.

Was easy enough to install although the wiring diagram threw me for a loop at first. Sound quality is far superior than my stock VW radio. Bluetooth works well so far and call quality is very good, better than expected.

Pros: Bluetooth connectivity works well. Sound quality is excellent especially when playing music through my phone.

Cons: No adapter to connect to the stock satellite radio. Radio reception is just ok, but part of that problem could be due to the poor stock radio antenna. One disc changer is a bit of a drawback but I got the radio for the Bluetooth connection.

OK let me start by saying I love this deck! The sound is clear and powerful, great adjustability and the functions of this deck are exactly what I wanted. I read some reviews and most of the complaints were about the display and menus. It is designed to be seen from off center, if you are looking at it directly from the front it can be hard to see especially if you let it keep changing colors. As for not being able to keep the clock on all the time, all you need to do is turn off the screen saver function and press display and it keeps the clock on all the time. Now for the menus, it is really pretty simple. You press the sound or display button to bring up the menu and then press the left or right arrow button to scroll to the setting you want to adjust then use the large volume knob to adjust it then press display or sound again to save & return to the start of the menu. In the "Beat EQ" menu, you press the sound button and it brings up the "Beat EQ" menu then you press the large button on the volume knob which allows you to select one of the pre-set EQ's by turning the knob or If you don't want to use one of the pre-sets, turn the knob until you reach custom, then press sound again and use the arrows to select bass, mid or high it will then let you adjust them in 3 ways using the built in parametric EQ which is great for advanced users but may be confusing if you not familiar with it and how a parametric EQ works compared to a typical slide band EQ.

    Pros: Everything!

Cons: Have not found any yet.

Very disappointing. Won't depend on Crutchfield advisors in the future, or believe the reviews. The bluetooth is pretty poor. The sound quality is just OK, and have to really tweak the various options in order to make it sound. Operation with iPhone 4S is very disappointing: Bluetooth doesn't connect automatically when I get in the car; sound quality poor with the phone - people can't hear me well (built-in microphone), can't control content from iPhone music library - have to select content using phone, then plug it in to USB cable or connect bluetooth.

Pros: Pretty loud. Nice, big volume control, failrly simple display

Cons: Callers can't hear or understand me; poor iPhone integration; sound quality OK but not great.

I haven't bought an aftermarket stereo in almost 30 years, when I worked at an audio/video retailer and did car installs, so this is coming from someone who has not stayed current on this industry. All I can say is that the most difficulty I had was finding a unit that wasn't cluttered with blinkie LEDs that served no purpose but to increase the gaudiness of the devices. I have to say that the images of this unit made me fear an incredibly cheaply designed unit that would degrade the look of my vehicle, but it was the best option I could find from a price/features perspective, so I pulled the trigger. Having lived with it now for a couple of weeks, I'm not as annoyed by the gaud factor as I thought I would be and the unit works and sounds great! Happy camper here!

Pros: Great value for the features Sounds better than stock radio Simple Bluetooth Integration that works with iPhone5

Cons: Volume knob should be to the left side of the unit to reduce the reach A bit too gaudy from a design perspective...keep it clean and simple

I've had the Clarion CX501 since March '12, it has been great, took some getting used to but I have been happy with my purchase especially all the features for the price. It is definitely better than my factory headunit for the MOST part...My main reasons for purchasing are the 6 Channel 4V preamp outputs, the arger the volt the better signal to aftermarket amps, most are 2V/2.5V/3V. The built in Bluetooth (i have not set it up but will this weekend, so no comment), the amount of illumination color options to match my other interior lights, as well as the RMS power bandwith to be able to reproduce the highs and lows of all the different type of music I listen to...

Pros: Features for the price, Pre amp power, bandwith range, illumination colors, bluetooth, number of preamp outputs, subwoofer controls, ease of use (after about a week of getting used to it)

Cons: very weak radio signal. I live in the middle Dallas/Ft. Worth none of the most popular strongest singnals should ever come in weak but WOW they sure do, the forward/skip button has started to stick after moderate usage within 7 months

There is no way to completely eliminate the non active elements from being illuminated on the display. Another way to say this is that the display background is always illuminated at a low level. Illumination wire was installed correctly . Clarion states that this issue is inherent to the display's technology. Display colors and contrast settings were changed in an attempt to minimize this issue without any success. This made the entire receiver not only appear cheap, but also made for a visibly challenged display. This issue ultimately resulted in the return of the unit for an Alpine. I hope this information helps other consumers make an informed purchase.

Pros: Best factory appearing controls of aftermarket receivers.

Cons: Engineering design of display and an occasional drop out when playing back three different CD's

This is my second attempt to find a head unit that would fit in my 92 Corvette. Other HU's have direct plug in RCA connectors that result in the plugs sticking out in the way of the car structure. This unit's 'pigtail' connectors allow the RCA cable connections to require less depth. I added an Infinity Basslink sub (that fits behnd the seat in my 92 Corvette convertible) to get decent bass. I like the unit in general, and it's display color allowed me to choose orange text to match my car's interior lettering. Menus are less than clear, but usable once you figure them out. Bluetooth pairing with my Android phone (Kyocera Hydro) is unusable due to constant audio dropouts. Does work with a cable to USB connection, however. While I was concerned, equalization (3 bands) is acceptable. Overall, works as well as expected.

Pros: Good price, relatively shallow depth and RCA pigtails. Lots of sources.

Cons: Bluetooth pairing with my Android phone (Kyocera Hydro) is unusable due to constant audio dropouts.

Easy to install, matches my 2008 xTerra so well that it almost looks OEM, streaming Bluetooth media and built-in Bluetooth phone mic are top notch. Just an overall great value for someone looking for Bluetooth and iPod (USB) connectivity without DVD or a huge touch screen. This HU does everything it says it will, and still keeps my xTerra looking simple and rugged (kind of the point of an xTerra). I am a picky person, and I am shockingly satisfied with this product. The only nit is the radio reception, which I think is at least partially due to the vehicle antenna, not the HU.

Pros: understated look blends in with existing dash multiple color schemes made it easy to match my dash remote lets back seat passengers stay involved when road tripping integrated Bluetooth works well (after tweaking settings)

Cons: Understanding all features takes some internet surfing if you don't like reading manuals to understand all the functionality, this isn't for you radio reception could be stronger (but no worse than factory HU)

It wasn't reconnecting to my phone at first after cutting my Ford Ranger off, until I read the manual. It's set by default not to reconnect automatically to the last connected device. I changed the setting in the radio to reconnect and it reconnects perfect every time after vehicle re-start. The fit was great for my 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 Sport and the tools Crutchfield provided made the install easy. I'm going to buy another one for my Toyota Sequoia 4x4 Limited.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The FM/AM receiver is awful! I live in the NYC metro area with dozens of stations and can barely get one station to stick on SEEK and even then it fades in and out with static. Forget about morning sports radio on AM. It was exactly as bad as the stock radio on my new XTerra. I realize that iPhone compatibility with USB port is the focus of most stereo companies, but did they really have to completely ignore the radio segment? Doesn't everyone listen to the radio at some point? I expected that the factory radio would be cheap, but what's the point of buying and installing an after market stereo if the radio sound is going to be just as bad? I later checked the specs and realized it had the lousy "FM sensitivity" =11 dBf. I returned it for an Alpine unit at the same price point with 9 dBf (apparently lower is better and 8 is the best). Also, the shiny plastic cover made the display hard to read with glare from sun and would not stay in clock mode while playing music. Aside from that, the iPhone USB connection and sound was very good. Sure that a new set of speakers would make it sound even better. Crutchfield reps were GREAT about exchanging product and recommending a new stereo (plus speakers).

Pros: Sleek look. Fits well into dash. Good sound quality with iPhone/USB input.

Cons: Bad radio sound quality/reception; Would not recommend if you actually listen to the radio once in awhile. Shiny plastic cover glares with sun and probably will scratch easily.

I like the look of this Head Unit and the color affects. Never had a problem seeing the station in the sunlight. I installed it with some minor problems ( crimping the wires too tight actually breaks the wire in the crimp shell, had to re-crimp most of the wires on the harness) After installation, it performed awesome. It took me awhile to figure out how to connect my Iphone 4s to the blue tooth. I would recommend using the usb output. I talked to my friends through the unit with ease and with the A/C on medium to high fan settings. Everyone said they could hear me great, just sounds like they are on speaker phone. I have alot of static through my speakers, but that isn't the head units fault. I installed Alpines amp behind the head unit and left the settings in the incorrect positions ( i.e. switch on amp set to RCA and needs to be set to wire harness AND my gains are up all the way.) Hopefully once I adjust these settings the static from the speakers will go away. The static isn't that bad because they get drowned out with music is played. Would recommend this product

Pros: Crutchfield provides more than you need. I didn't need the antenna adapter The user manual is very thorough. Wire Harnesses were labeled prefect Sounds great and syncs up with your phone automatically when you start your car. Sync once and done

Cons: The instructions are limited on installation. Had to modify the installation kit for it to slide in my console, but that was a minor problem.

No dvd, no gps. - looks stock. Ability to change colors is awesome. - Menus hard to use for initial setup (bluetooth, equalizez, color etc) - Menus easy to use AFTER initial setup. - looks very stock (good) - took me 3 hrs to install - bluetooth works very well on android ICS and ios 5.1.1. Loud enough to make a phone a call with top up (convertible) or to listen to music - USB works awesome. Limitation to 999 songs - dimmer won't work unless you google it for workaround. Very nice radio for the price. The unit was for my 2006 Ford Escape. Install was very easy, although part of the sub dash opening needed to be modified as described in the product install instructions. When installed, unit looks like it was designed to be there. The multiple color lighting is really nice, however, some of the colors are somewhat washed out in bright sunlight. Overall really nice. A WORD OF WARNING: Make sure all the wiring is correct BEFORE pushing the unit all the way into the dash. Once the mounting clips engage the dash, and the unit fully installed, the ONLY way to remove it is to remove the center dash section.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What attracted me to this unit was its double din size, factory look, and bluetooth capability. After a few days with it, I can say that I am pleased. The bluethooth for phone calls and streaming Pandora works very well, and the sound quality of music is slightly clearer at high volume than the factory system (I have amplified Bose speakers, so I can't comment on power handling). I'm not crazy about the display, as it looks a little dated and can wash out in bright light. Having to cycle through each source to get to a specific function, is a little cumbersome. Dedicated buttons for each source would have been welcome. The radio reception is slightly weaker than the factory HU. The menu system is cumbersome, and the instructions are not detailed enough. Many adjustments are not spelled out. For example, when setting a custom sound profile, no information is provided as to what each of 3 settings for bass, mid, and treble actually does. Once the initial settings are made, however, this it is not an issue. Finally, I would have really liked to have a rear input on the unit.

Pros: Good bluetooth function - good music sound quality - nice overall appearance - good value

Cons: Insufficient settings detail in manual - weak screen - no rear input(s)

AWESOME PRODUCT...I have a 05 explorer ans I paired it with the Polk DXi570 5"x7" Coaxial Speakers and it sounds great. the 05 explorer has a factory sub and when I first installed the unit the sub would pop. I found out that the head unit is 12 volts and the Ford amp is 5 volts which made it pop. If you put a regulator between wire of the head unit and the amplifier wire the popping goes away. This has more to do with the vehicle then the Clarion CX501 receiver but it may save you hours of frustration if this happens. overall it is a very easy install and it sounds great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with this purchase so far. This was my 4th Clarion install from Crutchfield over the past 18 or so years. The instructions from Crutchfield were especially poor for my 2002 4Runner...quite a surprise for Crutchfield, but a call to the helpful Customer Service department cleared up all of the questions the instructions did not address. Initial setup of the radio is time consuming and unintuitive, but once the setup is complete the system is impressive. As everyone else complains about with this unit, the tuning interface is miserable. I won't get into that as you can read about it in other reviews. Ipod intergation is decent with my 3rd gen Touch. You can search the ipod music menus from the unit OR the iPod, but not both at the same time. Somewhat annoying, but easily switchable and manageable. BT connection between my Motorola Razr Maxx is fantastic. I've only used it with Slacker radio so far. Sound quality is much better than I anticipated. Bonus that you can play/pause and skip/back with the controls on the unit or the included remote. (I have a premium Slacker subscription,so I can't attest to it's functionality with a free subscription). Remote is IR and needs to be pointed directly at the unit. Would be better with a BT remote. Did not purchase HD tuner. Couldn't justify purchasing the Sirius tuner/subscript for this vehicle since it is not my DD so I can't attest to how those two add ons work. Overall I would purchase again

Pros: Price, Bluetooth & iPod integration, Stock look and feel

Cons: Tuning, Initial setup, fit (gaps were larger than I would have liked on my '02 4Runner)

Great unit at a great price. Works very well and sounds great! Replaced Monsoon unit in 2003 Jetta. Monsoon unit died and I have my eye on this particular head unit from awhile. Glad I made the purchase. Works well and sounds great. Little frustraded with the Bluetooth connection to my iPhone though. Can't seem to get the two paired. Not sure if I changed my pairing code in my iPhone, or that the unit is just refusing connection. The CX501 sees the iPhone just fine, but won't pair with the phone.

Pros: Works with iPhone easily. Works with different AUX inputs too. Easy to change face colors to match dash colors.

Cons: Struggle with cellphone pairing. Could be my fault though.

I originally purchased this unit in order to play my ipod in my car. The only drawback was I felt the instructions were not as clear as they should have been. I was installing the unit late at night so I wasn't able to call the tech line until the next day. That was frustrating. After speaking with the tech line the next day, I was able to get everything working. I consider myself to be fairly good at figuring things out but this had me stumped. Other than that it is worth every dollar I paid for it. The sound quality is unbelievable even with oem speakers.

Pros: Great sound quality even with oem speakers.

Pros: Sound quality, fitment, features, easy installation and it fit the factory mounting brackets.

I purchased this unit to replace the OEM 6 disc changer in my Nissan Versa which had stopped reading discs. The unit is an excellent replacement and fits perfectly in the DD opening. The sound quality is a head and shoulders improvement along with the other features this unit employs. I thought I would miss being able to load six discs at a time, but I really don't. I have been a Crutchfield customer for over 30 years and the main reason I come back is the outstanding level of customer service. The tech support and consultation is beyond compare in the industry! Tech support helped me when I had some questions during the wiring of the supplied harness for the Versa; they suggested other devices that helped make the installation easier when I called to make the purchase, like the dash removal tool. They also provided printed step-by strep directions with photos. The one thing I needed to do some extra research online was to find a good ground contact point. As long as Crutchfield continues to provide this level of customer support and quality electronics I will keep coming back!

Pros: Sounds, fits and looks really good. Easy installation Can change the lighting to match existing dash scheme USB, Bluetooth and Aux in provides a lot of options for music sources Instant Source Recall (ISR) that allows instant switching between 2 sources Good value at around $200

Cons: No direct function buttons which requires going through a list (unless you use ISR)

    Not Bad

    Wharfe from US on 5/29/2012

Wanted a basic unit, no Nav or anything like that, just a big volume knob! This one fit the bill, I always have liked Clarion. It sounds great, decent power for a head unit. Looks pretty cool. Ordered based on reviews but it does have some annoying quirks, mine anyway. 1) No separate function buttons, only one, so you have to press it a number of times to go between Radio, USB, etc. I'd rather them be separate for quick access. 2) Bluetooth is terrible. I'd like to use BT for audio so then when I get a phone call it automatically comes through, but the track change over bluetooth is so slow I can't use it, and noticed bad audio quality too. So I've been using USB for my iPhone, which causes a couple of problems. If I leave BT enabled on the phone the audio goes out there by default so I have to change it everytime or I hear silence. And then when I do get a phone call, I need to change the stereo to BT mode to talk. Also even on USB pressing the next track button usually forwards 2-3 tracks on the iPhone instead of just 1. Disappointed in the bugs but overall it's pretty cool, would be better if it all worked properly.

    Pros: Great sound

Cons: Buggy, screen limited to big characters, can't show song remaining time.. see above..

I love the bluetooth option, it works great. Even though at first i had to pair it with my phone everytime i get in the car, until i finally figure out how to set it up with "auto connect" Yes this is 21st century, but with this radio, you need to navigate through the manual to get what you need (except basic radio & cd function). I feel the rotary didn't need to be that big and taking that much space, some additional button would have been more helpful to facilitate the driver. For the money I don't think you can find a better head unit. The installation was easy but I did find it hard to get all the wires including the PAC steering wheel control behind the stereo in my 2007 MX5. This is not a fault of the stereo as much as it is a pitfall of having such a small vehicle. The Bluetooth works well with my Iphone but it really could use an external microphone as people complain about not being able to hear me because of the road noise associated with driving a convertible, (with the top up). With the top down I don't even attempt to use the phone feature.

Pros: Price, price, price. Bluetooth works weill. Factory Styling.

Cons: Screen is hard to see if not impossible in bright sunlight, and it is not easy to switch between Bluetooth devices. If you constantly switch between devices you will find it frustrating as it is buried in the setup menu.

Mostly I wanted 2 things: 1. a blue tooth device so that I can speak on the phone safely without fumbling and 2. a radio that I could connect my iphone to. On both of these scores the Clarion does its job well and I am pleased. I am not an audiophile but I will say this, the sound is superior to the OEM radio it replaced even though it bypassed the OEM Honda subwoofer. I found the instruction manual obtuse and difficult to understand. When trying to connect the blue tooth I needed the default code and could not find it in the manual. I called Crutchfield and got it immediately.

Two weeks after installing one in my first daughters 98 Accord, we bought a second one for my second daughters 99 Accord. Thanks to the installation kit, connector, harness, and documentation from Crutchfield, everything I needed to know for the installation was provided. This was a major factor I considered when researching where to buy. The first installation, along with the steering wheel control interface, took 90 minutes. The second time around install was less than 30 minutes. The documentation provided by Metra for the ASWC, (OEM steering wheel control interface) was incorrect. After 30 minutes on hold with METRA I gave up and called Crutchfield. In less than 4 minutes I had the correct wiring and everything was working good. Thanks Crutchfield Tech Support!

After a few minutes of adjusting the parametric EQ bootsing highs and 50hz low - it sounds like an entirely new system! No problems installing with the awesome guides and mounting kit from Crutchfield. Took me 90 minutes to install. FM and AM receivers are GREAT. I paired my Android smart phone wihtout a problem and itouch was plug-n-play via USB. The changing colors are sweet! After 1 hour of use, I think I have all the features down - the only thing I don't care for is it scrolls features like a sales banner after controls are idle. e.g. "Bluetooth", "HD Radio Ready", etc. I'm hoping there is a way to turn that off - need to look at the manual. If your radio is more than 5 years old, you will be completely WOW'd by this unit!

Pros: Changing Colors, Parametric EQ, Bluetooth, Bass Boost, Easy to learn

Cons: Scrolling feature adds (I'm hoping I find a way to shut this off so it keeps the radio, clock, song/artist or whatever prefered DISPLAY I CHOOSE after controls go idle)

    Great unit for price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good unit for the price, i put it in my Food Explorer 2006 and it was easy to put in. I added the sirius feature to it and it sounds great. The Bluetooth will not pair with my Verizon phone is the only thing I find bad with it. I have a Samsung digital phone. I tried pairing it to my sons phone and it worked great, but he has a new smart phone. The glare on the face is bad during the day and hard to see the read out. For a older person it is hard to use the radio features. Still not a bad unit to replace the factory one, just wish it was easier to use1

    Pros: Good price and sound

Cons: Bluetooth not very good, and can not see the read out during the day due to glare.

Overall, very good unit at a reasonable price. I have not been able to use all of the features yet, however, great so far.

    Pros: clean sound, factory look

Cons: Various sub-menus to control iPod...very time consuming for those with many songs

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Customers, I have just purhcased and installed the Clarion CX501 head unit into my 2007 Hyundai Sonata (V6, SE trim). The installation process took about 2 hours and the installation process was fairly easy. The easiest thing about installation was that all the equipment needed to properly fit and seat the head unit into the stock frame was included by Crutchfield. The hardest thing was that I had to angle the faceplate so it seated perfectly with the frame. You have to angle the included faceplate and mounting brackets so that the actual head unit is protruding out and that the bottom of the head unit is lined up with the faceplate.

Pros: Value, Easy installation, Perfect Fit, Multi-use function, Bluetooth

Cons: The utilization and installation of SIRIUS/XM Satellite Radio.

Great radio came with all the right attachments for my vehicle. Installed easy, simple Instructions works perfect and has more features than I expected. Satallite radio is clear no static finally!

Pros: Easy to install, good instructions, Sirius attachment cheap an easy to hook in. Took about and hour start to finish to install.

Cons: The instructions for the adapter brackets were a little vague, I improvised... It worked

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed easily and fit perfectly into my Honda Ridgeline. Bluetooth works great for phone calls and for streaming Pandora Radio. Read the directions and everything comes together. The blue tooth is harder to sync the first time than it needs to be but once synced it works great. Call quality is good not fantastic. I can hear the caller great but the caller can't hear me as well but can hear just not loud. No dropped calls. Radio signal on some FM and many AM stations is a bit weak but acceptable.

Pros: Good radio for the price. Built in Bluetooth.

Cons: Weak AM radio signal strength.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great unit. I bough this to replace the factory subunit of my 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX. Installation took about 45 minutes and the only thing I needed to get that Crutchfield didn't supply were the wire nuts, that cost <$1 at the hardware store. I am using an iPhone4S. The bluetooth audio feature is awesome. No need to plug the phone into the unit, it syncs wirelessly. No noticeable loss in sound fidelity when listening to music compared to the USB or aux cable. I was able to connect my factory subwoofer by hooking it up to the powered antenna cable. Am considering buying a second unit for my wife's car.

Pros: Bluetooth Audio; USB connection; color adaptable display; large buttons; easy to use controls; ability to connect a powered subwoofer

Cons: the equalizer is a little unintuitive. syncing the phone wasn't completely intuitive either and the manual isn't easy to follow, but once you figure everything out the unit is really simply to use.

A lot of features for an okay price!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was installed on my 06' F-150. There are lots of excellent features on this unit like iPod compatible USB, aux input, bluetooth connectivity hands free calling, and lots of customized colors to go with your mood. Though I have not used the HD or satellite radio, those are nice features to have as well. The factory speakers' sound was actually improved upon installing this unit. Granted the factory speakers will soon be replaced, this unit brought out a significantly better range of mid frequencies out of them in comparison to the stock radio unit. The ease of use was not rated very high due to the quality of navigating through your menu options and iPod music. The more music you have on your iPod, the longer you have to slowly scroll through the menus. This is very inconvenient and can be dangerous having to put so much focus on the screen navigating through menus rather than focusing on the road. But this problem is easily solved with iPod simple mode. The random/shuffle feature is glitchty and works only half of the time. But this unit adds a very nice touch of elegance to your dash that can be set to match in color with the rest of your dash or a color of your own. In my opinion this is the best unit to own that doesn't go into nicer more expensive in dash DVD grouping of units available. Installation was simple and was only a matter of splicing the wire harness in. The unit looks like an above average build quality but only time will tell how durable this unit is.

Pros: USB iPod compatible, bluetooth connectivity for hands free phone calls, aux input, price, customizing colors

Cons: navigation through menus in iPod mode presents possibility of driving hazard

    Great unit at this price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2006 Honda Pilot. You do lose the use of the factory subwoofer but my non-audiophile ears don't notice much, if any, difference. Turning up the bass past +1 just muddies the sound. The Axxess control unit for the steering wheel controls works perfectly with this radio. My one nit to pick is that it does not have separate buttons to select the mode. You must scroll through all the choices. I only use the tuner, disk player, and USB drive. To switch I have to scroll through Sirius, Bluetooth, and Aux.

    Pros: Price/value, ease of use

Cons: Need to scroll through all the modes, bass won't satisfy the young "thump, thump" lovers.

    Great Radio

    2008 Nissan Rogue
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I have been shopping around for an aftermarket to replace my stock radio (Nissan Rogue 08 SL). Was torn between single and double din. My main hot buttons were * bluetooth phone capabilities * something I could play Pandora thru either via bluetooth or 3.5mm jack. * Radio that would work with my steering wheel controls After reading numerous reviews on crutchfield and a few other independent sites I decided to give this a try. I am one week in and am very happy with the purchase. It does take some tweaking as there are alot of functions but once you are up and is stellar. Let me say that Crutchfield has been stellar thru this process. I installed my radio on a Sat afternoon and was able to get a Crutchfiield tech to help me with some issues. Wasn't expecting this on a weekend. Also, this radio was maybe $20-30 more on Crutchfield BUT when you include the free wiring harness, dash plate and customer service, money was well spent.

Pros: * Blue Tooth capabilities to make calls and also stream music wirelessly from my phone. (I own a Droid X and Droid 4) * Color display option to match your current dash. This is a great feature. I on the other hand keep it in "rainbow mode" (my own term) where the display color changes every few seconds. * Nice power upgrade, music is alot more "crisper" and bass is nice * When I stream Pandora via blutooth I can change the songs via my steering wheel.

Cons: * Bluetooth connects maybe 90% of the time. Sometimes I have to have to connect thru the phone. No real hassle * I cannot make a call hands free. WIth my old system I could speak the number out loud and have it dial. With this you have to dial either thru the phone or radio and then you are hands free.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Takes a little fussing out of the box to get everything set the way you want it, but the bluetooth works very well, the sound quality is definitely good. The biggest selling point for me was the ease of use once you get the thing working. It has a very 'factory' look which integrates nicely into the interior. The big central knob is just easier to use than messing with the fiddly buttons a lot of new units have.

Pros: Incredible value for what you get.

Cons: No rear USB or Ipod connectivity. Weird omission.

    Nice looking

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted a new radio but didn't want to have one of those "over the top" ones that looks more like a robot than a stereo. The sound is great. The functions for me are perfect as well. I like the fact that I was able to change the color of the display to match the orange the rest of my truck has.

Pros: Easy set-up and different color display light to choose from to match the rest of the vehicle.

Cons: The plastic the radio is made from is very shiny which makes it difficult to read the display during most of the day. Sat the instructions on the bench seat and all I could see was the paper reflecting off the radio!

Great! Easy install and Crutchfield made it very easy!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this head unit, especially for my car (2012 Mitsubishi Lancer) It fits really well and looks sleek. The choices of colors are really cool and that also helped me match it up with all the other LEDs in the car so it seems to really go with the car. The only complaints I have were it was extremely difficult to figure out how to sync the bluetooth, but it was doable. Also the Ipod controls are cumbersome, I have a ton of music on my Ipod so not being able to search or type in what you want to hear some how is really annoying because I have to scroll through all the albums/songs/artist starting with A and using the volume knob. It will take me about 4 or 5 minutes of non-stop turning it to get to the bottom of the albums list. I remedied by setting up playlists, still wish I could just go to the album I wanted though.

Pros: Looks good, sounds great, does everything, total control of my amp and highs/lows volumes

Cons: Hard to select stuff with Ipod control, contrast is super dim in bright sunlight.

    great fit!

I give this a *Five star* because: (1) I bought this based on reviews; (2) it arrived in two days; (3) I called tech support before my install to be sure of my wiring connections; (4) with the supplied wiring harness pigtails I was able to solder up the connections at my work-bench and then literally bring the radio to the car and simply plug it in; (5) all the wiring connections were simple with most being a color match; (6) and the after-install "learning" was quite simple-- even as driving, I was able to sort out the details of the controls. A NICE PRODUCT! THANKS FOR HAVING THIS OPTION AVAILABLE FOR MY CELICA! -- total install was about 30 minutes, and it looks factory perfect.

Pros: Simple, easy, good tech support, handles my ipod like magic

    Cons: none
