Our take on the Clarion CZ401

by Zak Billmeier
Clarion

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

You love local radio — why not experience it to the fullest? Clarion's CZ401 CD receiver lets you enjoy the crystal-clear reception and high-quality sound that HD Radio™ technology brings to AM and FM broadcasts. On participating stations, you'll hear AM that's as clear as FM, along with FM that's almost CD quality. Many HD Radio stations also broadcast more than one channel on the same frequency, giving you even more listening choices.

Tag it!
Plug in your iPod® or iPhone® to the USB slot, and you can control it using the CZ401's knobs and buttons. You'll enjoy great sound quality, and your player stays charged while you drive. Song info shows up on the easy-to-read two-line display. When you're tuned into an HD Radio station with your iPod connected, you can "tag" songs you hear by simply tapping a button on the stereo. Then the next time you sync your iPod, you'll be reminded to buy the tagged songs in the iTunes™ store.

Build a system
Clarion made sure the CZ401 is ready for the future. You can add a Bluetooth® adapter to enjoy the safety and convenience of hands-free calling. You can connect a SIRIUS satellite radio tuner directly to this receiver without the need for a brand-specific translator cable, and that'll save you some money. Of course, a subscription is required to hear satellite radio programming.

At the core lies great sound quality
You'll be impressed by the clean power of the CZ401's built-in amplifier. Clarion's unique bass boost will add punch to your sound without getting muddy. The 3-band parametric equalizer gives you pinpoint control over the highs, mids, and lows — much more effective than the simple bass and treble controls found on most factory radios.

You can play your store-bought CDs, recordable discs, and discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. You'll also find the front auxiliary input handy for plugging in a Dock & Play satellite radio, an MP3 player, or any other portable audio player. The receiver features three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs that'll get a clean, strong signal to your outboard amps. A built-in low-pass filter lets you control the character of your bass, while a high-pass filter lets you send your speakers the frequencies they were designed to handle.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A hard plastic face-case is provide to protect the detachable face when removed. A face-fixing clip is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

H.M.I. Design: Clarion's superior H.M.I. (Human-Machine Interface) Design features an easy-to-use rotary volume control and easy-to-read illuminated buttons on the face which are laid out in an asymmetrical design to place the most used features within a specific area for ease of use and less user distraction.

High Visibility LCD: The two-line, high visibility LCD (with black background and white characters) on the CZ401 allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in almost any lighting condition.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Screen Saver: This unit is provided with a Screen Saver function which allows you to show various kinds of patterns and characters in the operation status indication area of the display in a random order. You can turn this function on or off. If the button operation is performed with the screen saver function "On", the operation display corresponding to the button operation is shown for about 30 seconds and then the display returns to the screen saver display.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Clarion CZ401 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the CZ401 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CZ401 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 45 watts x 4 channels (180 watts total)

BeatEQ: In addition to providing 3 preset equalization patterns (Bass Boost, Impact, and Excite), Clarion's BeatEQ lets you freely customize the level and range of the bass, midrange and treble portions of each pattern. You can tune the sound to your liking, depending on the category of music, for a more fulfilling listening experience.

    • Bass Boost: Bass is emphasized +/-3.
    • Impact: Bass and treble are emphasized +/-3.
    • Excite: Bass, midrange, and treble are emphasized +/-3.
    • Custom: Adjusts the bass, midrange, and treble independently +/-7.
      • Bass: You can set the effected bass frequency to 50Hz, 100Hz, or 200Hz and the Q-factor to 0.7, 1, 1.4, or 2
      • Midrange: You can set the effected midrange frequency to 500Hz, 1.0kHz, or 2.0kHz and the Q-factor to 0.7, 1, 1.4, or 2
      • Treble: The effected treble frequency can be set to 5kHz, 10kHz, or 15kHz, and the Q-factor to 0.7, 1, 1.4, or 2
    • Off (Flat): Bass, midrange, and treble are set to 0.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass Extend feature does not adjust the low frequencies like the normal sound adjustment function, but emphasizes the deep bass frequencies to provide you with a dynamic sound. This circuit boosts bass at an ultra-low frequency of about 50Hz, creating a rich, deep, defined bass rather than the muddy, booming bass of a standard loudness control. What is more, boost levels are dependent on the system volume, resulting in balanced system response and dynamic bass reproduction.

6ch/4V RCA Output: The Clarion CZ401 features 6ch/4V RCA line level outputs (Front/Rear/Sub). The non-fading subwoofer preamp output features an independent level control (+/-6) and phase adjustment (normal/reverse).

Built-in Crossovers: The Clarion CZ401 is equipped with built-in low-pass and high-pass crossovers.

    • Low-Pass Subwoofer Filter: The Low-Pass Filter (LPF) for the subwoofer preamp output will send only the low frequency range through the preamp outputs to ensure superb performance with a connected subwoofer. The low-pass filter can be set to 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range).
    • High-Pass Filter: The CZ401 features a High-Pass Filter (HPF) for the unit's front & rear channels, via speaker-output or preamp-output. You can adjust the high-pass filter from 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range). The HPF prevents low bass notes from distorting your front & rear speakers. The high-pass filter setting effects both the front & rear channels of the headunit.

Beep: The in-dash headunit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

HD Radio: The Clarion CZ401's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio technology offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc. The unit's built-in HD Radio tuner allows analog AM/FM tuning as well. Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com). No subscription fees required.

Station Text: The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the Clarion in-dash unit.

Preset Stations: The Clarion CZ401offers 18 FM station presets and 6 AM station presets. Stations can be stored manually or automatically.

Preset Scan: Preset scan receives the stations stored in the unit's preset memory in order. This function is useful when searching for a desired preset station.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 15 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Mounting: For proper CD playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to connect and play USB (1.1/2.0) Mass Storage devices loaded with MP3 and WMA files. Clarion CZ401

Written By C MAC, Richmond,VA on Tuesday, July 01, 2014

Bought it for the price, not for the bells and whistles. 8 Months later had to send it in for repair. Problem came back in a few months. out of warranty, out of Crutchfield's hands. New problem, radio is internally shorted and blowing my vehicle fuse. I expect more than a few years out of a simple deck.
    Pros:
AUX and HD radio, USB port I could charge up my phone.
    Cons:
poorly made. disappointed with the longevity. Also I could not figure out how to turn off demo mode once I got it back from Crutchfield from warranty repair.

The radio does everything I hoped. The installation instructions were easily understood. The installation for a non-professional was a snap.

    Good ffor the price paid

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good unit for the price, Siruis/XM radio option, USB from MP3/ iPod input, Bluetooth option, etc. Like another reviewer stated, the HD radio drops out on an AM station I sometimes listen to. It changes the volume and there is no way to just select HD radio or not. Also, you have to hit the "D" Display button to get the clock on the display. It doesn't stay on if you change or shut the unit down.
    Pros:
HD Radio. Options for Sirius/XM radio & Bluetooth. Cost for everything you get, install kit, connector, etc.
    Cons:
HD radio drops in and out which changes the volume/ clearity on stations. No way to select or deselect the HD feature.

    Great Unit!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Clarion CZ401 is an incredible value (got it all with free shipping, wiring harness, dash kit, and vehical specific install instructions). This is replacing an after market Kenwwod casset deck I had in my 2002 Ford Ranger. Right now it powers 4 Kenwood speakers, and sounds great! Comes with 3 sets of pre amp outputs (front, rear, and sub), so you can add and improve your system as needed. I would like to get a small sub in the near future. The USB slot is awsome, just put your CDs on it and you have a 100 disc CD changer. The one issue I have with it is you have to press a button to display the time, then after 30 seconds it times out and starts scrolling features the stereo has. So every time you want to check the time you have to press the button 1-3 times, not a deal breaker but annoying. This is the only reason why I gave it 4 stars and not 5.
    Pros:
3 sets of pre amp outputs, USB drive, looks cool, great price
    Cons:
Every time you want to know what the time is you need to press a button. The time will not stay displayed on radio, after 30 seconds it times out and starts scrolling features the radio has.

This stereo was a good price at $89. When you plug in your ipod it automatically picks it up and starts playing and you can control the ipod from the dash. It also charges the ipod when plugged in.
    Pros:
When you plug in your ipod it automatically picks it up and starts playing and you can control the ipod from the dash. It also charges the ipod when plugged in. The radio seems to work well and the cd player too.
    Cons:
When i installed it there was no sound. I called crutchfield and they were very helpful. I had to connect one extra wire that wasnt in the directions. It had something to do with the onstar connection, so you need to buy the extra connection if you want to use your onstar. I imagine this is an installation issue with any stereo and onstar. The other thing i dont like is that the time or whats playing wont stay on the display. It always goes into a mode that scrolls through all the options it has

I'm recommending Crutchfield to everybody I know who might need a new radio. The USB port is worth every one of the 89 dollars I spent, since I can carry all of my music on a $3 USB drive.
    Pros:
Great tech support. Two quick calls and they helped me with the wiring on my 98 Jeep Wrangler. Took an hour and a half tops to get in and going.
    Cons:
Took awhile to figure out how to set the clock, but instructions are not complicated or long, and when I looked at them carefully it walked me through the steps. Not as intuitive as they could be, but not impossible.

    Great value stereo

Written By andy, Jasper, GA on Friday, January 11, 2013

I got this for my Wife when her crappy OEM stereo started refusing to play CDs. It would keep the disk and not eject. I must say that the experience was quite pleasant. The install was very easy. Although I had to make a small modification on the mounting adapter. in order to get the trim ring on. But I understand that these adapters are designed with the vehicle in mind, and not necessarily the stereo. The wiring harness adapter made things so easy, and the schematics supplied with it was clear, and easy to understand. Even with the mod I made to the adapter, the install only took the better part on an hour, and with very little swearing.

The performance of the stereo exceeded my expectations. I was expecting this stereo to sound like a cheap stereo. But the quality was great. Other than the head unit, the system is all OEM, and it sounds like we spent more then twice what we paid. The controls were fairly easy to figure out, so I had the settings adjusted and the EQ tuned in a matter of minutes. My Wife loves the fact that she can load a thumb drive with a ton of songs instead of lugging around her overstuffed CD case.

If you are looking for an upgrade, or replace a defunct OEM stereo without breaking the bank, then you can't go wrong with the Clarion CZ401 paired with Crutchfield. One low price got me a great inexpensive head unit, and all of the adapters necessary to install it quickly and easily.
    Pros:
Easy to install, great value, and very good sound quality for the price.
    Cons:
The adapter needed a slight modification with a Drimmel tool in order to make the Clarion trim ring to fit. But not a deal breaker.

I put this in my Durango with factory amp and the Alpine audio package. This unit easily doubled the power over stock radio. The unit has a clean face and isnt "busy" looking. I ended up returning this as I listen to regular radio a lot and in order to "seek" you have to push and hold the advance button until it beeps, The buttons are small and having to push and hold, I found it took too much attention away from the road. All other features performed as advertised.
    Pros:
    Good power, clean face
    Cons:
small buttons, doesnt have one touch seek.

Great features ruined by display/visual problems

Written By Nolan, Lafayette, CO on Sunday, December 23, 2012

Great features ruined by display/visual problems - I'll explain. The features are everything listed on paper, HD Radio, front panel USB and aux inputs, etc. It's great to have all of these, unfortunately my experience with HD radio left me wanting. When going through an area where the signal would switch back and forth between digital and analog, each switch was accompanied by change in volume and a skip in the sound since the signals weren't in sync. For example, "Christmas" would sound like "ChristChristmas" or "Happy Birthday" would sound like "Hap-irthday", depending on whether is was skipping forward or back. The other issues were more disturbing, which are all pretty much related to the display. -The station displayed would not always reflect the actual station you were on. For example, if tuned to 100.1 and seek up I might see the display change to 100.5, yet I know it is on 100.3. go up again to 100.7 and it might show correctly, or it might not. Another example, if you have presets set; changing from preset 1 to 2, sometimes the display will change right away, sometimes after a few seconds, sometimes not at all. Pressing preset 2 again will update the display. -Pressing band to switch between FM1, FM2, FM3, and AM. Instead of AM, after FM3 comes FM5 (that's right "5"), but if you seek for a station, it then displays AM like it should. -Dimmer - only one level with little change. Doesn't affect the button brightness, which is way too much for night driving.
    Pros:
HD radio, EQ adjustments, front panel USB and aux input, remote,
    Cons:
Display issues, button brightness, preset buttons too small, no ISR button like other Clarion units.

    Installation Notes

Written By Rick, Los Angeles on Monday, December 17, 2012

I haven't even listened to this radio for more than a moment, these are installation notes. My previous radio was a Clarion DB355MP and I bought a Clarion again because I thought it would be easy to install, given all the work I did on the dash to make the previous model fit. For reference the installation is in a '71 Datsun PL510, and I had to cut the dash opening for the installation sleeve and then cut some tapered shims on my table saw and bond them around the opening to make it all work.

So here are my tips. 1. The screw for additional bracing (typically plumbers strap) that goes into the back of the unit is M4 x .70. This is a relatively small size and was not provided. 2. Speaker leads on the harness to the plug are only about 6" long. They were a foot long on my old Clarion and I spent a couple of hours splicing wire due to the difference. The pin-outs had changed from my old model and the harness swap was necessary. 3. I thought the old models sleeve would work with the new unit, but the fingers on the sides of the sleeve wouldn't engage, so I had to swap in the new sleeve too.

BTW, I upgraded because the disc player in the old unit quit after about 7 years. I think this is going to be an awesome radio and I'm looking forward to the additional features of HD FM, USB and 3.5 mm aux that I didn't have before.
    Pros:
High enough power for real music listening, nice heat sink in back, RCA outs including subwoofer, HD Radio, USB, and 3.5mm aux that I didn't have before. Lighted buttons.
    Cons:
Speaker wires on the wiring harness are short, about 6".

Just installed this radio. The install was really easy, once i soldered up the wiring harnesses. The only issue I have with the radio is that the volume knob is kind of shallow, and is a little hard to turn, but its really not that bad.

I was looking to get an inexpensive replacement for a factory radio, so I could plug in my android phone (and ipods). This has totally done the trick, and Crutchfield's instructions were spot on.

Best price for a head unit with 3 sets of pre-amps ouputs and HD Radio. I've had a great experience with a Clarion CD Head Unit many years ago (unlike all the Sony CD players I have purchased - they all quit on me within 2 years). I've only owned this unit a month but so far so good.
    Pros:
3 Sets Preouts HD Radio works great Good Reception Price
    Cons:
Station Preset Buttons are small I haven't figured out how to have the Artist and Song Names auto scroll. I have to push a button that looks like the 7th preset in order to get it to display the artist or song title.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If this was my first Crutchfield purchase, it would be my last. I was looking for a simple to use radio for my wife's Subaru Forrester. Rather than doing the reasearch I chatted with a rep for a basic, simple to use unit. This was the single recommendation I was given so I bought it. The directions were poor, and I found the best way to install it was to ignore them and do it by trial and error. THings like bracketts and bezels fit poorly or had to be removed completely. This is probably the 30th radio I've installed so it was not from lack of knowledge. Next, the owners manual was translated Japanese which was completely unintuitive. My wife hasn't tried it yet but I know she is not going to be thrilled.
    Pros:
    None
    Cons:
Poor installation instructions. Poor operational instructions, nonintuitive. Tiny buttons.

Great features, Great SQ - Especially for the price!

Written By Tim M., Rapid City, SD on Friday, September 07, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picked up this head unit on clearance for $109.99 - for that price, nothing comes close! I upgraded from the stock head unit in my 07 Grand Cherokee and the quality difference was even better than I expected. It's relatively easy to figure out how to tune your music with this head unit - with or without an amplifier and subwoofer hooked up. It's got plenty of power to drive your speakers without distortion, or if you're using a sub, you can use the built-in crossovers and the quality really stands out. The 4v preouts for the amps are both powerful and clear - there's no unwanted noise from my sub at all. As others have written in their reviews, the access to the clock is a bit inconvienient. You have to hit a button 4 times to get to it and then it gets cleared out as soon as you do anything else. Also, a lot of people complain that the buttons are too small - I think it's moreso that they're a bit crowded on the faceplate, and the rotary knob could stand to stick out a little farther to make it easier to rotate. However, I think that will just take a little getting used to controlling the deck with your fingertips. All in all, it's a quality unit - looks good, sounds good, and you won't beat the price, especially for a name like Clarion.
    Pros:
Great sound, great looks, well built, amazing price!
    Cons:
Clock is difficult to access, buttons on faceplate are a bit crowded.

My radio transmitter for my MP3 was going bad after about 2 years.. For the price of 2 more transmitters, I got a huge upgrade in sound. The aux input is far better than any transmitter and I've been wanting HD radio for years.
    Pros:
    Sounds great. Great price.
    Cons:
Controls are dopey. Setting the clock is a labyrinth. The blue LEDs don't dim.

This is a poorly-executed radio in more ways than one. First off, the button has to be pressed twice to display the artist/song title unlike in a Kenwood or Pioneer for instance, where the artist and song on HD Radio continuously scrolls. Second, while the other two let you choose a HD subchannel by pressing the seek keys, the poor user of this Clarion has to access two menus which is distracting and dangerous. The Magna-Bass EX continuously makes my speakers (Infinity References) bottom out and at low volumes, fuzz can be heard even while using a USB stick. Not to mention that AM HD Radio is completely useless on this unit. There's one AM station that I listen to that broadcasts in HD, the Pioneer in my other car has no problem picking it up, and this Clarion picks it up, but with so many buzzes and pops that it sounds like I have a malfunctioning Pac-Man arcade machine in my car. Moving the antenna didn't help. On the other hand, the faceplate construction is excellent and the sound is well-balanced if the Magna-Bass is disabled. I cannot recommend this radio due to its interface shortcomings.
    Pros:
    Robust build, neutral sound
    Cons:
Bass is muffled, buttons do not dim, asinine that artist/title does not scroll in HD Radio, ridiculous system of tuning in subchannels, bad AM reception

    Great Except for Sirius Reception

This is a great unit UNLESS you intend to use the SCC1 Satellite Receiver. The unit more often than not shows loading and does not receive sSirius. The HD Radio reception is good as is analog. It had a great sound, but the ability to listen to Sirius is lacking. If you don't plan on using the satellite function, this is a great unit for the price.

    Sound quality, HD Radio

    Satellite reception

Used to think highly of Clarion

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radio sounds great and it's really too bad that I hate it so much. I got this primarily to listen to Sirius radio. I would constantly get the "loading" error when I turned on my car and had it set to Sirius. I would have to reset the whole system about once every month (I've only had the thing for six months.) I was contemplating calling Clarion and it turns out they had a new patch on their website to fix it. I guess it worked but now, a week later, my display is completely gone. I can't see what I'm listening to and have to keep my Sirius tuner on the same channel because after trying to reset it once again, I lost all of my presets. If I want to listen to my iPod, I have to disconnect it completely and search for the song I want to listen to before reconnecting. I hate this radio!
    Pros:
Easy install, pretty to look at.
    Cons:
They seem to not really care about displays at Clarion. You have to switch to a "clock" display mode to see what time it is. Also, on Sirius mode, there are two display lines where they can put maybe a title and and artist on the same display. Instead, you can only look at one or the other and you have to keep pushing the tiny buttons to see who's singing and what song it is.

    Great Clarion Source Unit

Written By Jeff M., Dallas, TX on Thursday, August 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Clarion CZ401 and installed it in my '07 Subaru WRX last week and it has been great! Crutchfield shipping was fast and the Subaru dash pocket, wiring harness and instructions were included for free. Over all this receiver is a great value and it has literally "woken up" my stock speakers (6.5" in front w/ tweeters and 4" in rear). I added a sub and amp during the install of the deck and the Clarion unit has a sub volume control which is super convenient. I was a bit concerned at first about the HD radio sound quality cutting in and out as other reviews indicated. When I select a station in the Dallas area it will receive analog signal at first and within a few seconds there will be a slight delay as it switches to HD and then the sound comes through crystal clear. I have no problems with the switch over as it is CD quality sound when it changes to HD. Definitely recommended!
    Pros:
Value, HD Sound Quality, IPOD control
    Cons:
    Small buttons

CZ401, Best Value for the Buck

Written By Darin, KS on Monday, July 30, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In my opinion you will have a hard time finding a unit with this many pre outs and sound quality that you get with the CZ401 for this price. Outstanding value. I upgraded the stock unit in my 2006 F150. I was running amplifiers off the stock unit with line out converters. I just didn't want to change the stock look. I finally broke down and bought this aftermarket head unit. I shouldn't have waited so long to do so. The sound quality is amazing. HD radio is a huge improvement over standard. USB and AUX in for iPods etc. The eq on this deck is top notch. It may only be a 3 band eq but you have 3 options within each band so you can fine tune with ease. I'm feeding a 4 channel amp for my front comps and a mono amp for my JL audio stealthbox subwoofer. Crystal clear 4v pre outs. Hard to find 4v pre outs on head units at this price. Using the high pass and low pass on my amps and tweaking the eq on the head unit has brought my system to life.
    Pros:
Value, Sound Quality, 4v Pre Outs, EQ Adjustments
    Cons:
    None.

    Bang for the buck

The buying experience was as usual excellent. I purchased the CZ401 to replace the original stereo in a 2000 F250 SD. Everything came packaged in such a way that it was protected. Instructions were clear, and the wiring harness very easy to match up with the stereo harness. A little solder and some shrink tubing, and it was done. The installation kit fit well, though it does rattle a bit on gravel roads. Overall very easy to install in an f250

The CZ401 itself is a mixed bag. It has excellent sound quality and a bright clear display. Operation is fairly straightforward. As several have noted here, it is difficult while driving to use the tiny buttons on the face of the unit. For me this is especially obvious when trying to move between folders on a USB stick. It is too easy to hit the wrong buttons. Menus have all of the basic functionality easily accessible from the rotary control in the center, but there is a lot in the menu beyond that which is a bit difficult to get to. I suppose once that I have been using it for a while it will be easier to use.
    Pros:
Display is very easy to read and large Sound Quality Remote Controls are high quality.
    Cons:
Buttons small and placed close together (hard to use while driving) Display does not show much information

Unit installed in 08 Mustang convertible primarily to connect to Sirius. Wiring harness adapter kit instructions lack detail - some functionality lost.
    Pros:
    Detactible face plate.
    Cons:
Pushbuttons smaller than cell phone - unusable. Sirius radio option unreliable - keeps going to LOADING display. Sometimes connects even while display reads LOADING.

    Love this Clarion!

I am so glad I picked this Clarion CZ401! It took me and my husband over two hours of difficult, frustrating work to install, but once we got it in, we were so happy! I don't know what all these people are talking about with how easy the installation is. Maybe they have lots of experience. I have no experience, and I wish I had paid the $65 to Geek Squad for them to do it. Regardless, we finally got it in and it's gorgeous. Beautiful blue buttons with a nice white-text display. The two-line display is nice because it shows the track number, name, and time all at once. The sound quality got a huge boost when I plugged my iPad in with a usb cord rather than an auxiliary cable. I have a separate clock on my car, so I don't care that my stereo doesn't provide a good clock function. You could also buy a special little car clock that sticks to the dash. I wish I could give this more than five stars for value. This was by far the best deal on the internet or in any brick and mortar. The fact that it came with an installation kit was a huge savings, plus I found a $20 coupon code. Great deal. Anyway, to make a long story short, WE LOVE IT!
    Pros:
    Everything!
    Cons:
Installation was difficult, but once it's in, it's perfect

Easy to install, easy to use. Don't know why I waited this long! Easy setup, good sound, simple to use. I like the two-line scrolling display, especially when playing .mp3 files from portable media - CD, Thumb Drive, etc. Wen adapter is used properly, it fits like a glove! Can't really tell that it's an after-market add-on.
    Pros:
Plays all kinds of music content. Remote control is very handy. Radio sensitivity is great, picks up stations without a lot of static.
    Cons:
Can't set the hour on the clock. Always returns to the hour previously displayed each time I try to correct it. Minutes can be set perfectly. Never had this issue before, but since I can't see the clock from the driver's seat anyway, it's not a big deal.

Great replacement for the Mach 1000 in my Ford Mustang GT (2003). The OEM Mach 1000 had terrible FM reception and the 6 CD changer kept jamming. The Clarion has great reception, the CD player works great and the trim kit makes it look like it was always there. It also had hook-ups for the quad amps in the trunk. Great value for the money.
    Pros:
Easy to install, great price, great reception.
    Cons:
need to get used to some of the controls.

I purchased the unit while on sale, so the price I purchased it at makes the rating higher than I would've given it if it weren't on sale. Overall, the install was super easy, and the master sheet combined with the user manual made the install a breeze. The sound quality is great, and the HD radio is fantastic (when you can find an area that has HD stations...my neck of the woods only has two). I love th
