Our take on the Clarion CZ500

by Zak Billmeier
Clarion

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Talk hands-free in your car with a compatible phone — Clarion's CZ500 CD receiver features built-in Bluetooth® so you can keep your hands on the wheel during your conversations. When a call comes in, the CZ500 mutes the music while you talk to your caller over your car's speakers. Clarion includes a microphone that you can mount in the best spot for maximum sound quality.

Play music from your iPod® or iPhone®
You won't need an adapter to play digital tunes in your car. Simply connect your iPod or iPhone to the rear USB input, and you can browse your music collection using the stereo's controls. That way, you can stash your player and keep it charged while you drive. An included remote lets your passengers control the tunes while you concentrate on driving.

Even more ways to play your music
The CZ500 will play your store-bought CDs, plus recordable discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. You can also load up a USB thumb drive with MP3 and WMA files for even more options.

Sweet sound
The built-in amplifier delivers plenty of power, while a bass enhancer and 3-band parametric equalizer allow you to adjust the sound to your taste. If you're building a system, three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs send a clean signal to all your amplifiers. The subwoofer volume control comes in handy when you're switching from one kind of music to another, like from jazz to reggae. You can use the built-in low-pass filter to get maximum efficiency from your subs.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A hard plastic face-case is provide to protect the detachable face when removed.

Note: A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

H.M.I. Design: Clarion's superior H.M.I. (Human-Machine Interface) Design utilizes a distinctive "starburst" control button array. The headunit's buttons are clustered symbolically for intuitive operation, with a large rotary volume control that is blue illuminated for easy recognition and a cool look in your vehicle.

Digital LCD Display: The two-line, 10-digit, digital LCD display (with black background and white characters) on the CZ500 allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in almost any lighting condition.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Screen Saver: This unit is provided with a Screen Saver function which allows you to show various kinds of patterns and characters in the operation status indication area of the display in a random order. You can turn this function on or off. If the button operation is performed with the screen saver function on, the operation display corresponding to the button operation is shown for about 30 seconds and the display returns to the screen saver display.

    Audio Section

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the CZ500 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CZ500 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 19 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 watts total)

BeatEQ: In addition to providing 3 preset equalization patterns (Bass Boost, Impact, and Excite), Clarion's BeatEQ lets you freely customize the level and range of the bass, midrange and treble portions of each pattern. You can tune the sound to your liking, depending on the category of music, for a more fulfilling listening experience.

    • Bass Boost: Bass is emphasized +/-3.
    • Impact: Bass and treble are emphasized +/-3.
    • Excite: Bass, midrange, and treble are emphasized +/-3.
    • Custom: Adjusts the bass, midrange, and treble independently +/-7.
      • Bass: You can set the effected bass frequency to 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 200Hz and the Q-factor to 1, 1.25, 1.5 or 2.0.
      • Midrange: You can set the effected midrange frequency to 500Hz, 1.0kHz, 1.5kHz, or 2.5 kHz and the Q-factor to 0.5, 0.75. 1.0, or 1.25.
      • Treble: The effected treble frequency can be set to 10kHz, 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz.
    • Off (Flat): Bass, midrange, and treble are set to 0.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass Extend feature does not adjust the low frequencies like the normal sound adjustment function, but emphasizes the deep bass frequencies to provide you with a dynamic sound. This circuit boosts bass at an ultra-low frequency of about 50Hz, creating a rich, deep, defined bass rather than the muddy, booming bass of a standard loudness control. What is more, boost levels are dependent on the system volume, resulting in balanced system response and dynamic bass reproduction.

6ch/4V RCA Output: The Clarion CZ500 features 6ch/4V RCA line level outputs (Front/Rear/Sub). The non-fading subwoofer preamp output features an independent level control (+/-6).

Low-Pass Subwoofer Filter: Switching on the Low-Pass Filter (LPF) for the subwoofer preamp output will send only the low frequency range through specified outputs to ensure superb performance with a connected subwoofer. The low-pass filter can be set to 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, or Through (full-range).

Beep: The in-dash headunit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion CZ500 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner offering manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The CZ500 provides 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. Each AM/FM bank can hold up to 6 station presets, proving you with 18 FM station presets and 6 AM station presets. Stations can be stored manually or automatically.

Preset Scan: Preset scan receives the stations stored in the headunit's preset memory in order. This function is useful when searching for a desired station in memory.

Instant Station Recall (ISR): You can store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source.

Local Seeking: When Local seeking is turned "On", only those radio stations with strong radio signal can be received.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Clarion THD300 HD Radio tuner (020THD300, discontinued), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. The add-on HD Radio tuner includes iTunes Tagging capability, so if you hear a song on the radio that you like, you can tag it to download later from the iTunes Store.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

XM Satellite Radio Ready: The Clarion CZ500 supports XM Satellite Radio when connected to the Audiovox XMDirect2 Tuner (item number 220CNP2UCA, sold separately), using the Clarion XM Passport Interface Adapter Cable (item number 020CCUXM1, sold separately). The XMDirect2 Tuner will need to be programmed for this radio. A subscription to XM Radio is also required for service.

Scan Play: This function allows you to locate and play the first 10 seconds of all the tracks recorded on a CD or the first 10 seconds of the first track of all the folders on an MP3/WMA disc.

Last Position Memory: If you turn off the unit while a disc is playing, it will resume playback at the stopping point when it is turned on again.

    Great Head unit

Written By Raymond, Cookeville, TN on Thursday, November 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I always wanted to have a unit that had bluetooth and can hook up to an iPod very easily. I bought this right before they discontinue it about 1 1/2 year ago. it has great sound for a preamp unit. super clear on Bluetooth streaming. When i added 2 subs to the unit, it made my truck booming down the highway. overall, its a great unit and i wish they have another just like it. the one thing i didn't like was when connecting to Bluetooth, it switches to Bluetooth. And sometimes it won't play music when connected. When you hang up a call, it stops the music and you have to disconnect and reconnect later.
    Pros:
Great Sound USB connection Bluetooth calling It puts the boom in Booming easy installing best buy to get for $140
    Cons:
discontinued Syncing Contacts Switching back to music after hanging up a call

Bluetooth Calling Terrible but can be upgraded

Written By Anonymous, DCS on Thursday, September 15, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the same problems with the microphone - no one can hear me even if I am physically hold the microphone in front of my mouth. However, I came across a software upgrade on the Team Clarion site for the radio via the usb. MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY. I have not done this yet to see if it works, but it seems like it should. If possible I will post an update to this review after I try the process. I am happy with everything else about the radio which I mostly purchased for A2DP bluetooth streaming from my phone.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this unit. It was easy to install, and after a little time it was easy to use. I have not hooked up Satellite radio yet, but as far as IPOD and Flash Drives, this thing is GREAT! Functions great, bluetooth capability is great. One small hiccup was setting the clock. Other than that, great.

    Bluetooth is useless

Written By Tony, NY on Wednesday, July 27, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a low priced receiver (i.e. under $100) to replace my factory unit and decided to spend a few extra bucks on the CZ500. The main draw of this unit for me was the built in bluetooth. Unfortunately the bluetooth is basically useless. Every time I made a call the person on the other end could barely hear me.

The unit functions fine as a stereo but I would have bought something cheaper if I knew that the bluetooth is a gimmick on this unit.

After extensive research and reading review upon review of various head units, I decided to get a Clarion. I picked up this unit because it fit perfectly into my budget. After installation I fired up this unit, and instantly started playing around with it. I have to say I love the EQ on this thing, and its got several other features I haven't even had time to mess around with yet. Compared to stock, this unit gave me much crisper highs, and clean lows which I found to be a pleasant surprise. All in all I give this head unit a 5 star rating based on features, sound, looks, and price.

After one bad unit tha affected only the XM tuning. The unit is great. The sound and features are a big upgrad from my factory Civic radio. The bluetooth sounds pretty good, the Ipod, Aux input, and Sat. radio all sound very good. customer service has been very good. When I had the problem with the radio the guys at Cructhfield sent my entire order over again to be sure the right part was replaced. Stereo for the money, I wouldn't trade it in.

since I did not know what kind of stereo system I had in the truck for sure, I thaught I had the non infinity system, when i was installing the stereo, and running everything I needed for the speakers and future amps and subs today, I found out I had to have an adapter for the infinity sound system, because the amps are attached to the factory speakers and have 8 wires to each side. well my fault for not knowing. I got the head unit installed, and replaced the two front door speakers as well with components. the trick was figuring out what wires went where. the adapter would cost 150.00 at best buy, wal mart didn't have it, and I just cut the wires, and figured out what went where with the factory radeo still in place, after I did all that I connected everything up started puting together everything I tore apart and installed the head unit. I can say was a lond day, but was finished in 7 hours with a miss hap included. multi meter was very handy figureing out power wires to old amps. havn't tried the hands free as of yet, but one day this week will do so.

I bought this radio because of the external mic for the bluetooth, the expansion features, and because its a Clarion, it arrived quickly I installed it and then went on vacation driving 10 hours each way that is when I realized how bad this thing really is:
    1. The user interface and menus are the most counter intuitive I've ever seen
    2. Pre-set buttons are very small and a pain to push
    3. The controls don't have much travel or feedback but you have to push them very hard to get the radio to do anything
    4. Bluetooth sound quality is good but sometimes it won't connect to the phone unless you power the radio down and turn it on again (I tired 2 phones that work great in my other car with a Sony radio)

While on vacation I had crutchfield send me a Return authorization, do yourself a favor and avoid this thing.

Installation easy due to the kit Crutchfield provides. Looks good and sounds great on tuner, CD and off USB thumbdrive but bluetooth linking not very simple. Have to manually relink every time the car is started up...for example; even when stopping for gas. My CZ501 (next version up) I have in my other vehicle automatically links which is much nicer.

    Almost a good deal

Written By MikeT, Greenville, SC on Tuesday, May 31, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I thought I had gotten a really good deal on a receiver when I bought this one. After getting installed, with some help from the Crutchfield team to rewire the factory amp, it seemed to be a good receiver. Good sound, especially compared to the factory unit.

However, after living with it for a short while, it went from good deal to annoying. The bluetooth would not automatically pair for the first week or so, then mysteriously started working. Now, when you get in the car, no matter what you were listening to, it defaults to bluetooth and you have to reselect your previous source.

In addition, the microphone is useless and there are no gain adjustments to try to make it work. The person on the other end of the call can not hear anything that is said through the mic, even held up to your mouth.

This one is definitely going back, as soon as I can decide on a replacement.

Love the radio for the price ($140 plus free 2 day shipping and no tax). But the clock issue is more annoying than I imagined when reading other reviews prior to purchase. Why the clock doesn't show at all times is beyond stupid especially with a 2 line display. The other issue is I didn't even begin to think that the song info wouldn't show on the radio display when streaming by bluetooth. It does when hooking up an IPOD through USB. I have to look at my phone when a song comes on I don't recognize which defeats the whole purpose. Other than those 2 issues, very happy with radio so far.

This is the first modern deck I have purchased that was packed with features, but simple to use. Most have some rediculous control scheme involving joysticks and push in to pop out a control and other nonsense. This deck installed easily with included harnesses from Crutchfield and worked flawlessly. It's like getting a factory stereo with all the features you could ever want built-in. If I have any complaint, it would be that the design seems to be sculpted away from the driver position meaning it seems to slant (just slightly) from left to right. This is not a big deal but in my convertable is causes a slight glare to occur with the top down and I have to 'lean' toward the passenger side to see the display in that situation.

This is a great head unit at a great price. I installed this in my 2003 Kia Sorento and it operates flawlessly. The bluetooth works great and sync'd easily with my iPhone 3Gs and my fiance's iPhone 4. The mic cord wasn't long enough to route up to the visor so I stuck it to the steering column right behind the steering wheel. Voices from this mic position come through well on the other end, the mic is more than sensitive enough. There's a little echo on the other end but no more than most factory bluetooth systems. The AD2P function for playing music through bluetooth is awesome and works great with music files as well as Pandora and other music streaming services on iPhones.

connecting ipods and iphone to the system via the units USB cable is easy and works good. It didn't recognize my iphone 3Gs the fist time I hooked it up but the second time I plugged it in it worked fine.

The unit has been working really well so far.

Great Sound, Poor BT and Garbage Radio Search

Written By Stephen2, Norton, OH on Wednesday, May 18, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I started of with a DUAL which made me think I needed new speakers. I installed this unit instead and the sound was amazing! I love the ability to hide my USB stick to listen to music. As with many other reviews the Bluetooth does not automatically connect which makes it useless. I'm not going to manually connect every time I hop in my car.

The radios search function is USELESS. There is no scan, only seek. To use it you need to push and hold the button for about a second every time you need another station. So if you plan on searching for stations, forget it. I can't believe a system like this would have such a poor execution of a simple function.

    PROS:
    -Excellent sound
    -Hidden USB

    CONS:
    -Incompatible Bluetooth (LG Optimus)
    -Poor BT sound/functionality
-No reasonable scan/seek function for radio
    -Ugly display/faceplate

I would not recommend this unit unless you wanted it purely for the hidden USB functionality.

Bought this for my wife for bluetooth capability for phone and music. Worked fine for a week. Had small annoying issues: you have to re-pair the bluetooth phone every time, could not have it show just the time. Bluetooth microphone was terrible, could not hear anything. But I could live with all that. Now, four months later, buttons stopped working, tuner just keeps scanning. Resetting it doesn't work. Very bad quality. I am going to see if I can get it replaced.

    Good but not great

Installed this in my girlfriend's 2002 Civic. It's a decent unit for the price but the
menus are pretty confusing, the display despite being a 2 line isn't very flexible
in what you can have it display, the buttons feel cheap, the ipod interface while
good, is not as fast as my new JVC (reminds me more of the old Alpine KCA420i
in terms of scrolling speed when turning the dial). Perhaps most importantly the
bluetooth interface seems poorly designed. Despite the booklet saying you can
initiate a call from any source by hitting two buttons together, neither my gf or I
can make it bring up the call interface unless on the Bluetooth A2DP audio
source. We also had an issue with her iPhone 3G not auto connecting but a
helpful post in the forums here solved that. All in all, for the price you get a lot of
features, but it may be a case of quantity over quality. I'd recommend the JVC
    815 over this big time.

This product was great for the start, easy installation, great look, and quite

The only con for me would be connecting my phone each time to the Bluetooth and

The only cons I've had with this deck are that the bluetooth does not auto
connect w/ my phone(but this might be a problem w/ my phone) and the blue
tooth mic isn't the greatest but it does the job. Neither of these is a deal
breaker. The A2DP is amazing. I connect my android phone and i can play

Got this system for my 95 Lexus ES 300 as it has bluetooth. I have to say that
this is an awsome system for that price. The output is also good, I have to
mention the bluetooth is really really nice, i have a iphone 4 which connects
with the system good(but one little disappointment, i have to connect the
bluetooth everytime after i turn on the system, it doesnt connect automatically
like the bluetooth in Garmin Nuvii GPS, in Garmin Nuvii it connects
automatically after I turn on the system everytime) streaming of music via
bluetooth is really awesome, I even connected the online radion from my IPone
4 by bluetooth. Call quality is ok sometimes the other side couldnt hear me
but the display will show you all the calls placed, receive and missed. You can
even place a call with new numbers using the dial of the receiver. The radio
quality is good as long as you have a good antenna, but it is awesome for the
old antenna. They have a preset sound and also you can do custom sound
options. only the disappointement is the installation kit, cruthfield has to field
study and introduced new installation kits may be a different make. As far as
the clarion receiver I am happy with it. May be I have to wait and see as it is only
a month older to see if it is funtioning good. May be I will write a review again
after 6 months to make sure the same quality is there in the radio.

Awesome Head Unit for the Price

Recently bought a 2004 Ford Explorer it came with the stock CD / Tape Unit my old car had a CD / MP3 player from Panasonic granted it was 5 years old it worked. I wanted something I could hook my iPod or Droid X up to as well as with blue tooth. After reading reviews and taking a few trips to local stores i decided on the CZ500 for a few reasons although it is the older model there is now the CZ501. i liked the fact that the USB was a cable coming out the rear so i could hide the iPod and not worry about cables being left out for some one to see. It has 3 sets of pre-amps for if i ever want to hook up my Amp in the future. the blue tooth supported audio profiles so i can stream from the Droid. All this for less them some other units with out as many features. As for the blue tooth it works like a charm the only thing i could complain about if i had to pick something wrong is the auto playing when you sync it to the phone but its not that big of a deal all you do is pause it on the phone and it works fine after that.

Great, unit, sounds great, easy install. My only two beefs: 1) the EQ controls are
OK, but I wish that either that were more bands for the parametric EQ and/or that
the Max Bass (or whatever it's called) had more control that simply on or off. When
it's on, it's far too much, but a little of that extra deep bass would be nice. 2) the
microphone for the bluetooth function is terrible. No matter what I do, callers can't
hear me. I rarely make phonecalls in the car so it's not SUCH a huge deal. Other
than these two relatively minor issues (for me) this is an amazing unit.

    Incrediable for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got this from Crutchfield for my daughters 1996 Honda accord. The parts
that come with it for the dash kit do not match up to well with the car. however,
the stereo is very nice. For a sub $150 unit, it comes with a bluetooth mic
cable, and can also control an Ipod from the head unit.

The sound is wonderful, and it is easy to navigate after about an hour of playing
with it. The bluetooth disconnects every time you turn the car off. However you
have to manually get the phone to connect again. This is a pain in the butt.

You cannot change the color of the display, but then again this is not a higher
end unit. You also cannot control the Ipod from the Ipod when it is plugged in.
The display has a nice 2 line display, but nothing like the 10 lines on the Ipod. I
wish I could control it from both ends.

Another nice thing about this unit is that you can connect a Iphone 4 to it.
Others only go to the 3gs. This is a nice feature.

I would recommend this unit if you have a budget like I do. The
bluetooth mics in the head units are not good at all, I highly recommend you
get one with a wired mic like this one which comes with the unit.

    Great unit for the price.

I've been a user of Clarion stereos for 17 years now, and havens been
disappointment yet, including this new stereo. The features that it offers for
the price is definitely hard to beat. I love the options for playing my music as
well. I have the USB cable currently routed to my glovebox with a 14gig flash
drive attached that hold most all of my music. I don't have an iPod yet, but so
far I see no need to get one. The Bluetooth feature is great for playing MP3s
off of my Blackberry as well.
Pros: Clean sound, Bluetooth, USB, and 6 channel RCAs
Cons, Browsing the USB drive can take time. Bluetooth automatically starts
playing the last song played on my phone when it connects.

    Nice Stereo Head

Written By Jim, Sunnyvale, CA on Sunday, March 27, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Car: 2001 Ford Sport Trac; Phone: HTC Evo 4G, Sprint

Aesthetic:The light of the head is bluish, but the dash lighting is green. So
the Head stood out sorely at night. Also didn't realize that the clock DOES NOT
show up on the display when the radio is off. As a result, I lost the clock
function once the factory head was replaced.

Bluetooth:The built-in BT functions well, except that answering calls by
pressing the button on the head doesn't work, as described in the manual.
However, calls answered by pressing the answer button on the phone would
transfer the call to the stereo head. A2DP is working well, except that as soon
as the phone is connected to the head, it starts to play the music. So I have to
stop the music on the phone. Not sure if this is a problem with the phone or the
head. The work around is to change the selection to HD Radio when A2DP starts,
and that would pause the A2DP. On the other hand, the A2DP is helpful when
using GPS routing because it sends the instructions to the head and car speakers.

The HD Radio module makes listening to radio a pleasure. It seems that the power
is not equally divided between the front and rear speakers. I had to adjust the
fader more to the rear speakers so that the sound fills the cabin. This maybe a
factor of distance between front and back speakers in relation to the driver's
ears... Balancing between right and left seems to be acceptable.

    Great Radio for the Price

This is a great radio for the price. I installed it in my 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. It fits perfect and looks good. The features are great. I can stream music from my iPhone 3gs and control everything from the radio. My wife loves now having hands free calling from her iPhone in the car as well. With the wire harness included from Crutchfield it integrated into my factory installed infinity sound system beautifully and sounds great.

    Good For The Price

Written By Glenn, Naples, FL on Tuesday, March 15, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a decent unit for the price. It doesn't have a lot of the "fluff" that you get
from higher priced units, but it is quite feature packed for the price.

The unit performs well, but you're not going to get the quality that you would in a
higher priced model. This unit makes a great replacement for a factory unit in
    an older vehicle.

It does have a few issues:
    1. The unit has no way to keep the clock on the display. As soon as you perform
any function, the display changes and never goes back to clock mode unless
    you manually put it back.

    2. The unit did have issues connecting to my phone using bluetooth. My
phone's bluetooth had to be switched off and then back on for the unit to
connect, even though it was told to auto-connect.

    3. The startup sequencer seems to be out of order. The amplifier circuit turns on
before the input (tuner, iPod, etc) circuits do, causing a popping sound even at
low volumes. (Output circuits should ALWAYS turn on last!)

    Clarion CZ500

Written By FrankM, Sillycon Valley, CA on Saturday, March 12, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An iPod 4G (2005ish) confuses it -- I think it sees it as USB storage first
    rather than an iPod.

An iPhone 3G, once auto-connecting for bluetooth speakerphone use, becomes the
default audio source. So the radio switches from tuner to silence about ten
seconds after I start the car, then I have to press the SRC button to get back
    to the tuner.

An iPod Touch 2G connected via USB is iffy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it
claims the CZ500 isn't a compatible device and the CZ500 shows ERROR 3 on its
display. The navigation is a bit clunky, not least because my iPod Touch has
    lots of albums on it.

A USB flash stick works well. If you're using a Mac, and dragging MP3 files to
the flash stick, you may need to get rid of some additional files that are
created on the USB flash stick but don't show up in the Finder by default. I
cleaned them up from Terminal but then I use Macs because they're nice Unix
    workstations.

Bluetooth speakerphone and radio work OK for me. They give you that long mic
cord for a reason, so you can run it up the roof pillar and hook the mic to the
sun visor. In front of and above you is good.

Sad that the clock doesn't keep good time and that the "screen saver" is useless
dancing fruit instead of a slow-moving clock display.

Great radio and install package for the price

Great radio for the price - including install package and shipping plus instructions.
Granted the install instructions are lacking and the insert cabinet was not secure,
yet this was a great buying experience with Crutchfield. Definitely will shop there
    again.
Radio has all the basics plus some extras and just about every way possible to
    connect to it.
Wish the clock would stay on all the time (no punn intended) since I have no clock
in the car other than the radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

CZ500 is a nice unit at a reasonable price. It was fairly easy to install in my
2010 Honda Civic coupe. I like the rear USB connection so that I can tuck my
iPod or USB key inside where it can't be easily seen. Bluetooth works fine for
me w/ my Eris phone w/o any noticeable problem using its microphone.

There are some minor issues that you may have to put up with..

    - LED light during the day gets very dim and hard to see
    - Buttons are hard to press around iPod control
    - As mentioned by other users, having to press display button a few times just
to get the time can be a hassle.

Overall, I'm really satisfied with the purchase and like the enhanced sound
quality even w/o adding anything else. I did get the HD radio for free which
    works fine.

Nice Try, But Poor BT Design

Written By 13thScorpion, Spokane, WA on Thursday, March 10, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice unit, easy to install. However I was very disappointed by the poor handeling of bluetooth features.

First, the auto connectivity feature does not work all the time. Especialy if you shut your phone off and restart it - the reciever will not connect to it. It is as if it is only connecting to the phone when the vehicle is started, and if connectivity did not take place there - good luck.

Second, and most annoying - the reciever will start playing your recent playlist automatically. I have my iPhone connected to it and it is SO ANNOYING. Best case you have to stop it, which is hard for me because I live in a cold weather and it means I have to get the gloves off, get the phone out of my pocket etc. Worse case, you switch the unit off not realizing that they did not bother to also STOP the ipone from playing, and after an hour of driving you discover you lost a significant charge on your battery.

I called Crutchfield and they were amazing about it - switched to the Sony BT3900U. I used the BT3700U in the past and LOVED IT. We will see how the 3900 does. But I will stay away from Clarion going forward.

I gave it two starts because sound was OK (not great) and the design was slick and non intrusive (e.g. no flickering lights that you can't turn off etc).

once u figure it out it's great

Written By Dean, San Antonio, TX on Monday, March 07, 2011

This unit is hard to figure out, but once you do it's great. I don't care about blowing out
my eardrums any longer, but this unit will do it. It's a vast improvement over the stock
unit in my 2001 Ford Ranger. The main reason I purchased this one was for the
Bluetooth option. After I installed it, I was a little disappointed in it, it did not work well
with my phone. All of the options worked, but I had to yell for anyone to here me. I have
since gotten a new I Phone, and it works great, everyone can here me fine. So it matters
what kind of phone you have as well. I like the USB. I didn't have to buy a car charger for
    my new phone.

The HD radio is a plus. Mine stopped working after about 10 days while driving down the
road. I called Crutchfield and they immediatley sent me a new HD reciever. It did not
work properly either, so the tech suggested that I reset the unit? I had no idea what he
meant. under the face plate there is a very small rest button. I used a toothpick. That
cured the prblem, and now it works great.

Not a fan of the manual. obviously it was written by someone who does not speek
english, because it leaves alot of detail out, but if you are halfway tech savy you will
figure it out. It makes since beacuase it is made in China.

I love the stereo... but there are a few quirks.

Out of the box, the stereo wants you to manually connect your iPhone/iPod every time. To remedy this, you need to enable "AUTOCONNECT".

On your stereo, press SRC till you get into Bluetooth mode, then hold the "D" button then cycle thru the next menu till you see AUTOCONNECT. Turn it Off, then On. iPhone should automatically connect from now on.

Even so... another quirk... when the stereo connect to iPhone via Bluetooth it automatically starts playing music from my iPhone. Not the last played song... but it almost seems like a random song.

I wish it would just connect and let me launch the iPod app myself... like on my previous Sony stereo.

But it is still a solid stereo.... especially for the price I paid.

    Very poor design

Written By Jim, Seattle, WA on Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Capable unit, but full of bad design decisions and quirks that, after 6 weeks, have become major annoyances. The things that drive me up the wall, in descending order:

BT auto-play: Once you do the BT workaround, it autodetects my phone every time I get in the car. Eventually. But then it tells my phone to start playing random music, interrupting the radio.

Phone integration broken: When a call comes in, music is muted, and the phone rings through my speakers. But pressing the Answer button never works. Instead of making it easy for me to keep my attention on the road, I'm trying to grab my phone at the last minute after unsuccessfully trying to answer via the stereo.

The radio reception is poor (analog and HD).

BT intermittently drops when trying to answer calls, or change source on the phone.

Off switch: Instead of turning or pushing a knob, you have to press and hold the source button for a few seconds. When I turn the thing off, it's usually because I need to be able to concentrate particularly intently on the road; having to press and hold a button doesn't help me at all.

Clock: doesn't display by default. If you push a button 3 times, it shows the clock, but the moment you change anything on the unit, even the volume, it's gone.

The USB cable won't charge my phone.

Source always cycles through Aux, even when nothing connected.

The microphone is next to useless. (Would be higher on the list if I was able to actually answer incoming calls.)

I would highly recommend this system. Everything about it is great.... the sound, the

    receiver from XM.

I just don't know what to think.

Written By Chad, California, MD on Sunday, February 20, 2011

I bought this headunit to go in my 2005 Silverado. It looks good and fits nicely after the
metal support bracket in my dash was cut out.

However, the menus are sparse and hard to navigate. For example, this was the first
headunit that I ever had to read the directions for just to figure out how to change the
    clock.

If you are using it with your iPod and have a lot of music like I do, it is kind of a pain the
butt to find any particular song or artist because you have to scroll through every single
    item.

If I had to buy a headunit again, it wouldn't be another one like this.

Written By RandyS, Phoenix, AZ on Friday, February 18, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My two main options for a stereo receiver were Bluetooth connectivity for my cell phone and iPod connectivity, mainly via USB although I would have settled for minijack. I was willing to spend up to $300 but got away with a lot less with the Clarion. The sound is great and I have all three options built-in with no extra adapters to buy. The iPod interface on the Clarion is a little too simple and I wish there was a larger display or quicker method of scanning through the menu of songs or artists as it can be distracting. There may be a way to set my phone to be discovered each time I start the car as well but I still always have to reconnect each time I turn the car off. Otherwise, the clarity of the calls on each end is great. Definitely would recommend for anyone looking for a budget car stereo receiver edging into the Bluetooth/iPod market.

The Clarion CZ500 has a lot of features and does a nice job with them all.
Sounds great in my truck. The hands-free bluetooth works great with my phone. I
have a small nitpick with the clock display... If you set the display to clock,
it doesn't change to temporarily show new song information when transitioning
songs or change to show the new radio station when you switch radio stations.
It's a small annoyance, though, and would recommend this head unit.

Right out of the box, the receiver looks great. Tons of options includes high voltage
front, rear and 2 sub out RCA's, connect for steering control, rear USB w/ built in iPod
control, built in Bluetooth and connector to expand even more.

Sound is great w/ lots of adjustments. iPod control is very smooth and Bluetooth easily
synced and worked / sounded great.

Had to do a custom Mach 460 preamp (the small amp behind the radio) bypass in a
2000 Mustang GT and Crutchfield sent all the stuff they had (actually had to use wiring
from two different kits to make it work) to make sure I could make it happen. They sent
me two different wiring kits for free. I still had to make a custom connection to get the
signal passed the preamp and to the amps in the trunk that run the factory subs but it
was well worth it. And all of this with a very low price. I knew there was a reason I buy
    from Crutchfield so often.

Froze and broke after 4 months...

Written By MightyMikeNice, Linden,NJ on Friday, February 11, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this head unit in October 2010. The unit is a true value, considering the features for the price. The unit is very "buggy".Examples are leaving the iphone connected to unit via USB cable, but listening to radio.Once deciding to listen to music on iphone and selecting usb via menu button, the unit takes FOREVER to discover and play songs from iphone,if at all.Sometimes a simple push of preset #4(which also serves as pause/play button) will do the trick, other times you have to unplug the USB and replug to work, and other times it worked just fine. That was just one example of some of the "bugs". The main reason I decided to leave a review is as follows: A few nights back,I start ther car, take the iphone from my belt holder, and plug it into the USB cable.I was waiting for it to discover the iphone forever.IT didnt,so I disconnected the USB cable in attempt to reconnect it.However, this time, a 6 digit message appeared on the display(something like MCU ELG)and the unit froze. It stayed like that until I arrived to my destination, shut the car off,and proceeded to wealk away.I noticed a dim blue light while walking from the car,so I went back only to discover the unit now was frozen and wouldn't shut off!!!I started the car again, took the face off and pushed in the reset button. The speakers gave a little pop,and the unit died.Thats it,broke, done, malfunction.

    Excellant Radio

Written By Janet E, West Carrollton, OH on Thursday, February 10, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is one of the greatest purchases that I could have made. My factory radio in my
Hyundai Sonata was dieing on me, CD wouldn't play anymore because a CD was stuck
inside and the light on the radio didn't work any more so I never knew what channel it was
on. So I called a Hyundai Dealer and the cheapest radio was $450 so the parts person told
me about Crutchfield, so I went to the web site but there were so many to pick from that I
called and spoke to a terrific salesperson named Brian who was so helpful to find me a
great radio. I purchased the radio and the professional installation, it was worth the money
to have it put in the car and I'm enjoying the music, I can also talk on my phone over my
car radio because the radio has bluetooth which is terrific. So take my advice and use
Crutchfield to make your purchase and consider the Clarion CZ500. Thanks Crutchfield for
    your help.

A Great deck at a great price

Written By PlanoViking, Plano, TX on Friday, February 04, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The deck is an absolute blast. I got it with the HD radio and pulled the USB
cable to the front so I can hook up thumb drives. With Bluetooth, USB, HD, CD
and everything else the possibilities are almost limitless. The deck
automatically finds my phone when I start and bluetooth is on.

The only drawback in my case was that the deck sticks out a bit, but in a large
old Suburban who cares...It might be a Chevy problem since my previous deck,
also a Clarion, didn't fit in all the way either. I just covered up the metal
with black tape and it looks good.
