Our take on the Clarion DB355MP

Clarion's DB355MP CD receiver is all about value. Not only does it offer plenty of speaker-driving power and convenient sound shaping controls — it adds MP3 playback to your entertainment array. That means you can burn a CD-R or CD-RW with up to 10 hours' worth of your favorite music files and take it wherever you go. It's like having a virtual jukebox in your dash!

And the DB355MP doesn't stop there. It offers Z-Enhancer's three preset sound curves for easy, one-touch tone adjustments, plus Magna Bass EX to help boost the low frequencies. Clarion's on-board amplifier (17 watts RMS x 4) powers the show, ensuring clean sound at all volume levels.

If you're building a system, you'll appreciate the set of preamp outputs. They make it easy to connect an external amplifier or powered sub for even more bass reinforcement. The faceplate detaches for an extra measure of security, and the wireless remote allows you to control the receiver from anywhere in the car.

Features

MP3 Playback: The unit can play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using ISO9660 Level 1 or 2, Joliet, or Romeo formats. The player can recognize up to 8 hierarchical levels, up to 254 total files, and up to 128 total folders. Bit rates for MP3 are 8-320 kbps, plus VBR (Variable Bit Rates).

Z-Enhancer: The Z-Enhancer function features three types of sound tone effects stored in memory. You may select Z-Enhancer 1 (bass emphasized), Z-Enhancer 2 (treble emphasized) or Z-Enhancer 3 (bass and treble emphasized). When the Z-Enhancer feature is on, the bass and treble controls cannot be adjusted.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass EX feature provides an extra boost of bass when activated. Unlike conventional loudness features which boost the low frequency range at around 100Hz, the Magna Bass EX boosts the low- and center-range frequencies of about 50Hz. By focusing on the lower frequencies, the added bass impact won't distort or muffle the high frequencies.

Bass/Treble: The bass control range is +/-14dB at 100Hz. The treble control range is +/-14dB at 10kHz.

Screen Saver: Thirty seconds after a button is pressed, the screen saver will activate, displaying a series of moving dashes. It can be deactivated at any time.

Top Function: The Top function resets the CD player to the first track of the disc.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 15 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Last Position Memory: If you turn off the unit while a disc is playing, it will resume playback at the stopping point when it is turned on again.

Instant Station Recall (ISR): You can store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source.

Wireless Remote: The DB355 is equipped with the RCB-172 infrared wireless remote control. Dimensions: L=4.452", W=1.723", D=0.491".

Great Unit, Great Price

Written By Mike C., Rothschild, WI on Thursday, May 04, 2006

Bought this deck Monday night, got it Wednesday night, of course Crutchfield shipped ASAP which is to be expected. Deck fit PERFECTLY in my 97' Sentra, and installation was easy (all things considered) The picture does no justice for the display, which was much better than I expected it to be. This is the best mp3-cd deck for the money, hands down. Makes my crappy factory speakers sound 10X better, going to upgrade those anyway and will be looking to Crutchfield for that purchase as well.

very disappointed

not sure what to say, other than I've had terrible luck with this unit. I'm on #3, yes, the third unit, just crapped out on me, over a 3 month period. all of my problems seem to be with the disc transport mechanism, or related to that. stay away! never buying clarion again!!!

Good stereo w/good sound. Easy to install and use thanks to Crutchfield's instructions and a straightforward owner's manual. I especially like the remote. Didn't think I would ever use a remote in my truck, but I've become quite addicted to it.

Good radio

Written By Clarkaster, Los Angeles, CA on Friday, December 02, 2005

This is a decent radio. However what I don't like about it is that Clarion went cheap on the number of buttons they put on the unit. I don't like it when I have to hold the button down to use a function. I also don't like the small buttons with the small labels.

One thing you need to look out for is how you burn your mp3 cds. You need to try different settings with the "joliet" file system. Before it wouldn't read the discs I burn, but after I played around with it, I got it to work fine.

Now I can't get it to show the ID3 tags of the tracks. There's probably a way to do it, probably a couple of button combinations.

The sound is clean, not bassy, but clean. I plan to add a sub later and maybe change my factory speakers. But for now this is ok. I would've given it 5 stars if Clarion didn't go cheap on the buttons.

AWESOMMMMME

Written By BIG78CJ5, CT on Sunday, September 18, 2005

I bought this head unit because my friend had it in his honda with some xplod an polk speaks and it sounded beautiful and looked really cool. I installed it and absolutely love it it sounds awesome, displays and scrolls ur mp3 titles, has a cool screensaver, a remote that also works very well(other brands dont have in this price range), and is backlit in a nice blue with white letters that looks really sharp. There are several sound settings to boost your bass output, and it is a very nice looking unit that is loud. I just ordered a set of infinity Kappa speakers for it and i cant wait to install them too--- If you want a great sounding unit with alot of features and good looks, order the clarion, it is most definately ur BEST investment.

good value, annoying interface

Written By Alon Seal, Baltimore, MD on Wednesday, July 06, 2005

I purchased this head unit based on price. It does what I need, which is radio and MP3 CDs. So feature wise, it's good for the price. However, the interface is a bit annoying. You have to press a lot of buttons to display the track's title, or album. Also, the random play function is weak: it's turned off after a power down, and when you hit next, it just plays the next track in the same folder, as oppose to next random track.

Great unit

Written By Dan, Hershey, PA on Tuesday, July 05, 2005

This is a fantastic unit! It looks good and was easy to install. Powerful with a wonderful sound. All of it's features are easy to use and the controls are accessed easily. The front loading disc slot is very nice too. And with 18 FM presets, i still managed to have some left over. Great features for the price. I'd definately recommend it.
