Our take on the Clarion DXZ475MP

The CD slot sits behind the fold-down face of Clarion's DXZ475MP CD receiver, so there's plenty of room for the bold and bright 2-line dot matrix display to strut its stuff. But don't judge a book just by its cover — there's plenty of audio goodness inside.

Load up a disc with your favorite MP3 and WMA files, and the DXZ475MP will rock your ride with hours of music from a single CD. If you've got an iPod® in your pocket, you can add an optional adapter that allows you to run it with the receiver's controls, while you check out track information on the display. If you choose, connect a Clarion CD changer or satellite radio instead.

Make a quick and easy connection from your portable music player or plug-and-play satellite radio to the front-panel auxiliary input. If you own a Bluetooth enabled cell phone, an optional Bluetooth® adapter lets you take those important calls while you keep your eyes on the road.

Thinking about system expansion? The two sets of 4-volt preamp outputs send clean, noise-free signals to external amps or a powered sub, while the built-in frequency filters let you adjust the receiver's output to complement your subs and speakers.

Features

CEA-2006 Compliant Amplifier: The Clarion DXZ475MP amplifier section is rated at 19 Watts RMS x 4 channels in 4 ohms at 1% THD+N with a 80 dBA signal-to-noise ratio.

MP3/WMA Playback: The unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using ISO9660 Level 1 or 2, Joliet, or Romeo formats. The player can recognize up to 8 hierarchical levels, up to 255 files per folder, and up to 510 total files. Bit rates for MP3 are 8-320 kbps, plus VBR (Variable Bit Rates). Bit rates for WMA are 48-192 kbps. This unit is compatible with, and will display MP3 and WMA ID3 tags.

Shooting Star DCP Design: In this design, all the frequently used controls are as close as possible to the driver for ease of operation. The organizing of the controls on the left side of the DCP allows for a large easy to read display. This enables you to see station or track information quickly and easily with minimal distraction from the road. Additionally, a precision rotary volume control knob is centrally located for optimum control from either the driver's or passenger side seat.

Flip Down Control Panel with High Visibility Display The DXZ475MP features a flip-down detachable face with a 13-Segment 2-line display making the radio theft deterrent and easy to read. With the ability to display text characters as well as numbers, you can see the name of the track that is playing or check the time. It's high contrast white on black design makes it easy to see under any lighting conditions. The unit comes with a hard plastic face-case to provide protection for the detachable control panel.

Screen Saver: This unit features a screen saver function which allows you to show various kinds of patterns and characters in the operation status indication area of the display in a random order. You can turn this function on or off.

Title Text: You can enter titles up to 8 characters long into the unit's memory and have them displayed on the on the screen for CD, CD Changer, Radio stations and TV stations. The number of titles that can be entered for each mode are as follows.

  • CD Mode: 50 titles
  • TV Mode: 20 titles
  • Radio Mode: 30 titles
  • CD changer Mode: 100 titles

Z-Enhancer: The Z-Enhancer function features three types of sound tone effects stored in memory. You can choose from the following.

  • B-Boost: Bass frequencies are emphasized from -3dB to +3dB
  • Impact: Bass and Treble frequencies are emphasized from -3dB to +3db
  • Excite: Bass and Treble frequencies emphasized from -3dB to +3dB and Mid frequencies de-emphasized

Note: When the Z-Enhancer feature is on, the bass and treble controls cannot be adjusted.

Bass and Treble: When not using the Z-Enhancer you can adjust the Bass (100Hz) and Treble (10kHz) independently from -7 to +7 (+/-14 dB).

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass EX feature provides an extra boost of bass when activated. Unlike conventional loudness features which boost the low frequency range at around 100Hz, the Magna Bass EX boosts the low- and center-range frequencies of about 50Hz. By focusing on the lower frequencies, the added bass impact won't distort or muffle the high frequencies.

Switchable Rear/Sub Preamp: The Rear preamp output can be set to Rear (Full-Range) when running a pair of full-range speakers off the preamp outputs or to LPF 120, LPF 80, or LPF 50 when using the preamp output as a subwoofer output. If you have set the preamp output to one of the Low Pass Filter settings you can independently adjust the volume of the subwoofer level between -6dB and +6dB. Both the front and rear preamp outputs are attached to a 7.5'' pigtail.

High Pass Filter: The DXZ475MP also features a High Pass Filter that can be set to either 120Hz or "Through". The "Through" setting allows for full-range while the 120Hz setting only allows frequencies above 120Hz to reach your speakers.

Amp Canceller: If you choose to connect the receiver to external amplifiers, you can turn off the built-in amplifier for better sound quality.

Auto Store: Auto Store is a function for automatically storing up to 6 stations in sequential order in the provided preset bands. The receiver features 3 FM bands and 1 AM band; giving you a total of 18 FM bands and 6 AM bands.

Preset Scan: Preset Scan plays the stations stored in the preset memory momentarily. This function is useful when searching or a desired station in memory.

Instant Station Recall (ISR): You can store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source.

Front Auxiliary: The CD player feature a 3.5mm stereo minijack input on the front panel to enable you to connect an external portable audio source such as an MP3 player. You can adjust the input sensitivity level of the AUX input from Low, Mid to High to match the output level of your portable audio device.

Disc-In-Play-Function: This feature allows you to turn the power to the unit "on" and start playing the disc automatically when the disc is inserted even if the unit is not powered up, as long as the ignition key is turned to the "on" or "acc" position.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 15 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Backup Eject: The Backup Eject feature allows you to eject a disc even if the power to the unit is turned off.

Top Function: During CD playback, the Top function resets the CD player to the first track of the disc. If an MP3/WMA disc is playing, the top function resets the player to the first track of the currently playing folder.

Last Position Memory: If you turn off the unit while a disc is playing, it will resume playback at the stopping point when it is turned on again.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead which should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Mounting: You can install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal. When ISO-DIN mounting, you will need to use your vehicle radio's original factory ISO screws.

Wireless Remote: The DXZ475MP is equipped with the RCB-176 infrared wireless remote control. Dimensions: L = 4.461", W = 1.718", D = 0.494".

OEM Remote Ready: The unit also features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit to allow you to keep your vehicle's radio steering wheel remote controls and/or rear seat radio controls when used with the optional SWI-JACK interface adapter (part number 127SWIJACK, sold separately). The SWI-JACK is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Cell Phone Interrupt: If you connect this unit to your vehicle's cellular phone with a separately sold hands-free kit supporting AUX input, you can either listen to your telephone calls on your car speakers or have your car's audio system automatically muted when a phone call comes in.

  • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner (item number 220CNP20UC) and the Clarion CNP-CLA1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMCLA1).
  • SIRIUS Satellite Radio: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SC-C1 SiriusConnect Universal Vehicle Tuner and the Clarion CLA-SC1 Ce-NET SIRIUS Satellite Radio interface (package item number 700SIRCLAR).

AWESOME UPGRADE

Written By Rob, mechanicsville, MD on Sunday, April 06, 2008

I installed this head unit in the outside stereo compartment of my 2008 Winnebago Sightseer 35 foot motorhome. It's Awesome - with a remote, detachable face security, front and rear auxiliary inputs for our TV, projections screen system, and iPod you just can't go wrong here. Radio reception is excellent, built in EQ settings are handy, and the built in high pass filter was great when paired with the infinity 4x6 plates I hooked up to it - no more bottoming out on bass notes. Keep in mind that the RV had a "Magnadyne" radio in it - I had never even heard of them before...

The CD S/N rating at 80dB is low for a head unit - however we don't carry many CD's with us on trips, we usually just have a loaded iPod for easy acces to our tunes. The unite does however decode MP3 and WMA files if you'd rather convert the music and put them on discs.

Awesome unit, with lots of features - you just can't go wrong when upgrading from a factory type system with this.

Credentials: I've been ordering from Crutchfield and installing home and car audio and video systems since 1994 and was a competitor on the dB Drag Racing car audio sound off circuit.

Awesome!!

Written By Sam, Naples, FL on Wednesday, April 02, 2008

I bought this head- unit for my 2000 Ford Contour, I had already installed 4 360 watt speakers, and this little baby here push those four beautifully, the highs are great, the mid is great, the bass extender setting is great for hip hop or rap, but any music sounds great in this head unit. It is easy to use, and easy to install, i would recommend it to anyone.

Great Clarion Head Unit

Written By Chris, Dallas, GA on Sunday, March 23, 2008

This unit is great. I installed the whole sat system myself and never did
anything more than a basic head unit. Easy to install, everything laid out for
you. The sound is great. I installed it in an 02 Ram with the Infinity system.
Like any system you have to change the settings up and what not but you
have to do that with any system to get that perfect sound. The unit is solid
like the other review... I dont see the buttons wearing easy.

Highly recommended!!! Especially for the price...

Good Sound, Questionable controls/display

Written By warrens, Cape Coral, FL on Saturday, February 23, 2008

I put this receiver in a 1993 Saab 9000 CSE. The fact the radio 'fit' into the OEM slot was a help. The cable adapters were, again, a help, but the supplied adaptor cables to OEM Clarion connections were not complete. The front speakers were accounted for, but the back speakers had to be kluged in place. I ended up running CAT 5 wire to back speakers. The 2 slots Saab provided for the receiver and CD player/EQ were nice to work through as access points. Again, the harness connections worked, but were limited when it came to the back amplifier/speakers. The receiver has enough power to handle all speakers. Sound is good. Check the OEM speakers before you connect anything. The speakers were worn and the cones needed to be replaced. This was done and made the sound really sweet. The display can be made bright enough to see in direct daylight.

The button controls on the front are small as stated in other reviews. They are hard to read day or night and it is very likely possible to hit multiple buttons, even for narrow fingers. Women with long finger nails should use the nail and not finger tip to make selections.

So far it seems as though the use of the selection button to scroll from the first level of 6 stations to the second and then third is painful. Evidently, you must scroll past each station before moving to the next tier of 6 stations. Not a good thing in heavy traffic.

Desired functions would be auto recognition of radio stations and CD titles; direct selections of a band (ie band 1, 2, 3) at the FM level as was possible with the original OEM Clarion "Band" radio; Option to turn off all of the video effects.

This is another example of trying to gang up too many functions on a button and leaving out some desirable functions.

Overall, I would give this receiver an OK, but better can be had, review.

Solid little value unit

Written By Jonathan, Sacramento, CA on Wednesday, December 26, 2007

I am using mine with an external crossover and amplification, and I have the "internal amplifier cancel" feature enabled. After properly adjusting this unit, and the rest of my equipment, I am very impressed with the sound coming out of the Polk and MB Quart speakers in my system. No complaints at all on the sound front for this price range.

You know, I am a big guy, and the buttons are a bit close in places for me. I knew I was sacrificing that for the larger display, however. I definitely knew what I was getting on that front, and I prefer the extra display area on this unit. I agree that, as mentioned before, the buttons and removable face in general seem to be built well enough to last under typical usage.

Also, I would not be concerned with the 80dB Signal to Noise spec listed in the "Features & Specs" tab for "CD Signal-to-Noise". It turns out S/N is measured off of one of the internal amp channels when it's outputting 1w into 4ohms, as shown on a sticker on the box the unit comes in. I was a bit worried when I didn't know what procedure produced that 80dB number, but this is not a noisy unit when used with its RCA output(s) and your external amplifiers. As I have said earlier, no complaints on the sound front for this price range, but I have disabled the internal amplifiers in this unit.

Everything expected for the price!

Written By Brian, Sidney, Ohio on Tuesday, November 06, 2007

Bought this head unit for a 1993 caprice running a set of MB Quart 6.5 round components in the doors (had to cut to make room), 2 8-inch MB Quart MidBass drivers in the rear deck (had to cut for that too), a powerd subwoofer, and a 100.4 Amp. Headunit is great for what I needed, 2 preouts with a reasonable amount of voltage and a High Pass Filter. If you need a solid deck this is what you're looking for, as for the person who complained of high's... it all depends on your speakers, mine sound AMAZING. (try turning down your gains, you're probably clipping the signal with a 4V preout)

empty calories

Written By Alex, boston, ma on Wednesday, March 28, 2007

The sound lacks the warmth, depth, & clarity of other
similarly priced units i've owned from other manufacturers. The highs are empty & shrill, & the base is hollow and booms near out of control. For those of us who like guitars and drums, the mid-range is weak! This unit is may be ok for rap & hip-hop - but that's about it!
