Our take on the Clarion FZ150

by Jon Paulette
Clarion

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Digital made simple

Going all-digital in your car doesn't have to be complicated. With Clarion's FZ150, you can enjoy your digital music library without spending a bundle on features you don't plan to use. This no-nonsense AM/FM digital media receiver has everything you need to ditch the discs, and you'll find it all right there on the front panel: a USB port for thumb drives, a minijack auxiliary input for MP3 players, and a handy SD card slot.

Think about this -- you can fill up a 32GB SD card with up to 2000 WMA or MP3 files. The average pop song averages around three minutes, so if you have a 30-minute round-trip commute, you could go most of a year without hearing the same song twice. If you're up for the challenge, an SD card is also an excellent opportunity to create a truly epic mix.

The overall theme of simplicity continues with the controls. A large display, big dials, and an ergonomic layout make the FZ150 very easy to use.

Surprising sound

The FZ150 proves that a simple receiver can also produce great sound. With a built-in amp that delivers 16 watts RMS per channel, you'll get the volume you want. You can also get the sound you want with 4 preset EQ modes and a graphic equalizer. Just push the EQ button to select the type of equalization that best matches your style of music. If you want to upgrade your speakers and add an amp, you'll find a set of RCA preamp outputs on the back of the receiver.

Since there wasn't a CD player to worry about, Clarion's designers were able to fit the FZ150's features into a surprisingly shallow chassis. That means this single-DIN (2" tall) receiver can fit into a wide variety of cars, trucks, and other vehicles.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Clarion FZ150 employs a MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) power amplifier capable of delivering 45W (Peak) x 4ch of high quality sound with superior linearity & less distortion than conventional power amps, even with the volume cranked up. The power specifications for the FZ150 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the FZ150 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 16 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 40 watts x 4 channels (160 watts total)

2Ch/1.5V Line-Level Outputs: The Clarion FZ150 features 2ch/1.5V RCA line level outputs to connect an external two-channel amplifier.

EQ Presets + Tone Control: The FZ150 is equipped with four preset equalization settings (FLAT/POP/ROCK/CLASSIC) which can be accessed simply by pressing the head unit's EQ button. Each EQ preset provides optimum equalization for the type of music selected. You can also independently adjust the head unit's Bass & Treble.

Loudness: The Loudness function compensates for deficiencies in the low- and high-frequency ranges at low volume.

Beep: The head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion FZ150 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner offering manual, seek, & preset tuning. Up to 18 FM station presets and 6 AM station presets can stored manually or automatically. The radio also allows you to scan through all the head unit's available stations (5 seconds each) to easily search what's playing on the radio. When "Local" seeking is turned on, only those radio stations with strong radio signal can be received.

    Display  Features

Single-Line LCD: The single-line, high visibility LCD (with black background and white characters) on the FZ150 allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in almost any lighting condition.

Display Information: The head unit's display can be switched to indicate information such as radio frequency, track number w/ elapsed playing time, song/artist name, or clock. The clock is only displayed when the head unit is powered on.

Cover Panel: The digital media receiver's front-panel is not detachable. However, it does come with a plastic cover to hide the unit's front-panel when you exit your vehicle. The plastic cover simply snaps on and off the head unit's front-panel.

perfect for off road Jeep wrangler, no moving parts, all digital, takes a beating. My old head unit shorted because of rough terrain. The sound quality is surprisingly good, I like the cover for the buttons, I can spray my jeep out without getting the unit wet
    Pros:
toughness easy to use cover sound quality
    Cons:
pre drilled holes in the head unit are too close to the front for jeep factory carrier, the unit is in my dash

Fast service, easy to follow directions. Every thing included to install the radio. I wanted a plain radio with a knob for volume, the inputs for devices will possibly come in handy sometime. I get a lot more stations clearly than with the stock unit.
    Pros:
Looks nice, sounds good with stock speakers
    Cons:
Have to get used to the different buttons and will probably find more features in time.

For the price, this is perfect if you store your music on sd cards.
    Pros:
    cheap, sd card slot
    Cons:
sd card navigation should use the right knob for all navigation, instead it uses only the right and left and number 5 and 6 button.

It works as it should but you can't get the it to show the clock as the primary display. And when using the SD card you lose 1 or 2 seconds of each song b4 you start to hear it.
    Pros:
    Cheap
    Cons:
It doesn't show the CLOCK at all times. Instead it shows the radio station all the time.
Crutchfield response on Wednesday, July 16, 2014
Our Tech Support crew looked into it and there doesn't seem to be any way to have the clock show up on the display continuously. You have to go through several button pushes to display the time, then after a few seconds the display returns to the source info.

I really like this upgrade. I don't have to worry about consistent quality when playing music through my phone as I did with my cassette adapter and my radio transmitter that I used with my factory radio. The player picks up on radio stations pretty well. The bass boost, or "loudness," setting is nice. I also enjoy the sound of my classical music collection on the "classical" equalization preset. The radio doesn't function with the dashboard dimmer switch and therefore gets a little bright at night. The radio sits a bit back in my dash, making it hard to remove the included cover without having to pull out the radio a bit. So, I don't use it. The controls can be a bit confusing. You will most likely have to read the instructions.

    Not happy

Written By Rob, Ashfield, MA on Monday, July 07, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, Crutchfield is a top notch organization, and everything I needed (and a lot that I didn't!) was shipped quickly and well packaged. I was able to install the unit successfully despite having zero experience. That said, I am disappointed with this unit's anemic sound output. I know, I know-you get what you pay for. But considering how much car stereo prices have dropped in the last 20 or so years, I thought that even the cheapest unit (especially from a trusted dealer like Crutchfield) would be comparable to, say, a $200 unit in the '90s. There is absolutely no bass frequencies detectable unless the car is off and you are listening very carefully. Crank the bass control up and the (brand new) speakers distort. So I'm basically driving around with a pair of transistor radios. The tuner seems to only have a "seek" function, so I can't dial in frequencies of known stations. The display absolutely stinks (but thanks for the phony "spectrum analyzer" that lets me visualize the frequencies I'm not hearing). Music loaded on an SD card was even worse. Plugging my iPod into the aux input provided better sound, but the SD card option was something I really wanted to take advantage of. I would have sent this unit back but, like an idiot, I threw out the packaging, so I'm stuck with it. I'm hoping I can track down a used compact powered sub to give it some bottom end. Or just write this one off and start saving for an Alpine.
    Pros:
Doesn't look like it was designed by a twelve year old boy.
    Cons:
Sounds and works like it was designed by a twelve year old boy.

    Poor AM Quality

Written By Mike S, Texas on Thursday, July 03, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Brought this for my 94 C1500 to replace the factory unit. The FM quality was about the same as the factory unit, but the AM stations would not come in clearly. I also had a lot of RPM noise in the speakers on the AM stations, even after I added a second ground. I think it looked great, but I had several issues with it. I knew that it would not support playing music from my iPhone 5s, but thought it just might charge it via the USB port. It would not even charge it. Bummer. I liked the knobs and color of the unit, but the roundness of the chassis did not fit the square dash mount provided by CF. Not a killer though. The clock is an issue as in other reviews, and was useless. The FM stations sounded great, if not a little bit too much on the high end. There really isn't that much BASS supplied by this unit. The AM stations issue was a huge killer for this unit sense I frequently listen to those stations for quicker weather updates. I talked to support and we did add a second ground for the RPM noise, but even sitting still in an open area, the AM stations had poor reception, not even as good as the factory unit. CF Support set me up with the JVC KD-X210 and I am having much better luck with this one. All my issues addressed and cleared in the JVC and it is clearly a better unit over the Clarion.
    Pros:
Neat Retro Look I like the knobs Price Would look great in a JEEP
    Cons:
NO Clock USB Charging is limited Too much High End, little bass AM Station issues Rounded chassis did not fit dash kit well

    Problem with mp3 playback

Written By Bobb G, Houston, Tx on Monday, June 30, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver would have been great except that the USB and SD mp3 playback had an issue with no audio during the first 2 or 3 seconds of every song; no matter what I tried I couldn't get it to work properly. Of the dozen or so reviews I read on this receiver about 1/4 had this problem, and no one had a solution. So I guess it's a toss up whether you get the problem or not, but I guess 3 out of 4 are pretty good odds!! Very happy with Crutchfield return policy, I'll have to try again later with a different brand.
    Pros:
    Good sound, looks great
    Cons:
mp3 playback problems, buttons are very small, display needs to stop scrolling

    Small radio Big sound

Written By Mike, Indiana on Sunday, June 29, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this unit in 1967 Rambler. The dash had been hacked for a DIN radio. I wanted something that would look at home in the dash. At first glance it looks like an old two knob radio. Unit depth is a problem on theses cars so the compact design was a real plus. USB is great. Sd card slot is even better! It comes with a nifty snap on cover that hides the face of the unit when you feel the need.
    Pros:
Size. Front inputs for SD card, USB and Aux. Simple to use.

I needed a small inexpensive radio to replace a dead unit in my convertible. This unit fit the bill perfectly. It's small shallow chassis made for an easy install and the sound quality was better than I expected. It's simple to operate and the display is not distracting like the fancier expensive unit in my wife's car.

You Get What You Pay For

Written By Dennis, Chicago on Tuesday, June 24, 2014

Okay so first of all, it is a budget unit...and at the time of this review, it is also the most inexpensive head unit at Crutchfield.

Sound Quality - it only allows for bass/treble adjustment but it is misleading. You will notice when increasing the bass, it automatically DECREASES the treble. Reminds me of the old 70s and 80s radios that had bass/treble on a single knob. If nothing else, at least it's nostalgic. It is pretty heavy on the Mids...and there is no way to adjust the Mids. The EQ presets are okay but again they are heavy on the Mids.

It will definitely require you to teach yourself how to operate it. The manual is pretty short (its more like a quick start guide) and is poorly translated into English. While teaching yourself how to use it sounds easy enough, the button assignments are not intuitive. You will want to keep that "manual" handy for a few days until you get the hang of it.

I have multiple artists on a usb stick with subfolders for each of their albums. Unfortunately, this unit only displays the subfolders, bypassing the artist's folders altogether. So when I browse the drive, I just get a list of album names instead of Artist/Album/Tracks.

Playing files from usb works, but the big issue here is that it cuts off the first 2 or 3 seconds of every song! Highly annoying!

Coolness Factor? There isn't really one. It's small but it's UGLY. I didn't buy it for looks though. I bought it to play music on a budget.

You get what you pay for.
    Pros:
It works. It is cheap. Has usb. Has SD. Has Aux In. All on the front panel. Aux In works well with my phone and portable Sirius unit.
    Cons:
Lousy sound quality. Silence for first few seconds of tracks (at least when using usb). Unintuitive operation. No dimmer. No remote. Does not display artist's folders and their album subfolders, only their album folders.

    good bang for the buck

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered this head unit to bring the 1996 Regal I inherited into the 21st century. Can't beat the value for the money. Works great for my thumb drive and ipod. I don't like the dial for volume control, it's hard to get a good grip on it, and if you have a thumb drive plugged in, it gets in the way when you're adjusting the volume. Also pretty complicated to search music on thumb drive. Makes the factory speakers sound halfway decent. I had to upgrade though. Tonight I installed a pair of MTX 6x9's in the rear deck and Kicker 5.25" in the front doors, and this powers them pretty well. The deck doesn't go very deep so there's plenty of room for all the wiring in back.
    Pros:
great value, sounds good, decent power output, compact size
    Cons:
volume control, ease of searching thumb drives

For the money I am impressed. In todays world everything seams to be over priced. Clarion and Crutchfield did a good job on this one.
    Pros:
East to install, Easy to setup. Looks good.

Just received this today and got it installed and I'm happy with it. The buttons and build feel like it's a good quality unit, it plays and sounds just like it should. I use my 32gb sd card and it works nicely and shows the name of the files. The only thing that I wish was different is that all the songs on my sd card are in one big file instead of being able to pick folders. But overall great product and great price

Nice Stereo. Controls not user friendly though. I.e., I put all my music on a 16GB SD memory card. To move from folder to folder of MP3 files, its a little hard. Wish it had a remote so I didn't have to find the right small buttons to change folders. Otherwise sound is very good and has enough power for me. I like my music loud, but I am 48 and it is not the "make your ears ring after song" loud...
    Pros:
Good power, clear sound, good price
    Cons:
A little user un-friendly controls, no remote.

    Pros:
This deck is easy to operate and looks very stylish. Just the right kind of deck for someone who wants something inexpensive that will do the simple things and doesn't want all the bells and whistles.
    Cons:

I bought this deck when it was on sale, wanting to replace the silver cd/am/fm sony deck that my car came with used (1996 bmw 318ti) as i dont listen to cds, nor really the radio, i wanted something with an aux in, this one has an aux in, usb in, and sd card slot. now i just load a 16 gb usb stick and have a ton of music in the car at all times without having to deal with the hassles of aux cables. it also fits in well in the dash, its a very shallow unit since there is no cd drive, it was like a third the depth of the former sony deck. the display is simple, and i like the simple look, no need to have a light show on the dash like so many decks these days. it doesnt look out of place in the dash, unlike that sony deck that was in it before. sound quality is great, i wish it had an extra pair of aux outs, but i made due with a splitter for my 4 channel amp. i highly recommend it
    Pros:
shallow unit, simple design, good sound quality, great value, usb input works pretty well.
    Cons:
    could use more eq customization.

small, simple, loud enough, perfect for my car

Written By everyone is an expert, eden prairie, minnesota on Wednesday, April 23, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The question I had was, "Does this unit make enough good clean power to drive some nice 6.75" speakers?". If you get some efficient speakers it does. It is plenty loud. I purchased some Clarion 90 plus db car speakers. Sounds great. It is plenty loud to drown out all the people screaming at me with the window rolled up. What? On the radio is goes to 90 percent of the volume before I hear noticeable distortion. Keep in mind that a car stereo is actually for people INSIDE the car. I bought this with upgrading to the Clarion mini class D 4 channel amplifier in mind. The Clarion speakers will handle it, but my ears will likely protest after a short while. So I will be ordering the amplifier shortly :D The interface was intuitive and easy to navigate without reading any instructions. Remember that you need to be concentrating on texting while you are driving. (sarcasm) I read the instructions anyway because I needed to know what format the SD cards and USB had to be in, FAT16 or FAT32 by the way. This system is a massive space savings. I can fit almost all my music at 320 Kbps on a 32 GB microSD card. Thirty-two is the largest this deck will recognize according to the manual. Cannabalize your obsolete smartphone or digital camera. Well, about that clock critique, most people have autistic cellphone habits or wear a watch. Just saying, throwing it out there.
    Pros:
buttons, medium/process blue lights, woooohhh! Easy install. Did not need the metal DIN sleeve thingee with the old, plastic adapter kit Powered on after guessing the power connector wire by color from the previous deck. Easy to operate, really. Has enough power with efficient speakers to cause a hearing loss. If the multi-media features work on this particular unit, not a lemon, it is all good, todo bueno. If not I have a patch cord for the auxiliary input. If not I have a good hammer.
    Cons:
It is plastic and made in China for American consumers. Not enough power to compensate for a small penis or breasts, sorry. You will have to purchase car stereo enlargement or have sub woofer augmentation.

Will not be installed until finish replacing interior of car. Radio console is 1/8 " thick where radio inserts. My only complaint so far. Could not get bracket that slides on from rear to lock on. Had to file side latches back 1/8 " to make them fasten to hold radio in place. No clearance built in. Improperly engineered. I hope this is only problem I encounter. Will be about one month before I hook it up to play it.
    Pros:
Looks good and hope it will play good.
    Cons:
I had to modify mounting bracket.

This is a workable, non-mechanical car radio. It does what it is supposed to do, and the price is right.
    Pros:
Good price, looks okay, has the features I wanted. Handled the power antenna on my 1996 Miata just fine. Like the volume dial. The Crutchfield support guy quickly helped me out when mounting was unobvious: I hadn't done one before, and the instructions did not mention that the mounting case had tabs that need to be bent out behind the mounting surface.
    Cons:
The radio has to be on, and a button pressed, to see the current time. The button-pressing procedures for setting defaults, stations, etc., are not obvious, and I am usually quite good at that sort of thing. I still haven't figured out how to switch back and forth between AM and FM. Yes, I have the manual and haven't checked it for how to do this, but I am a little disappointed that I would need to. It would be nice to have a tuning knob as well: one has to fiddle with the buttons.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a car radio to replace the stock one that didn't have a cd player but gave me the ability to use memory cards this one is perfect for me. When purchasing it keep in mind it DOES NOT have a cd player. I only wish it had a way to make the time stay as the display, to gwt the time ti display you have to press disp button to get the time to display. This can be inconvenient when driving. As far as I can see that is the only downside to this stereo.
    Pros:
Sound quality, ease of install, not too bright display.
    Cons:
Time doesn't show while stereo is playing or when it is off. Sd card plays song by date not by artist / title / filename

    • The Clarion FZ150 ships in the box with a protective black cover over the stereo's face hiding the interface. This protective cover, at least in my car (it may work for all vehicles though), can be placed over the face of the stereo while stereo is installed. Other than that, the stereo does not have a removable face plate. [ EDWARD   Jul 17, 2014 ]

As a teenager without a large excess of money, is it possible to use and install this stereo without buying the $250 adapter? [ Jackson  Jul 12, 2014 ]

    • The installation gears are free. i installed it on my own, very easy process. [ Hai Heng   Jul 16, 2014 ]
    • Yikes! What kind of adapter costs $250?. If you were to spend that kind of dough, buy a unit that Crutchfield supplies free adapters with. To answer your question one needs to know in what car you intend to install it. It comes with a DIN box, so if your car has a DIN hole, just plug it in. No adapter required. If you are talking about wiring, consider a unit with Crutchfield's adaptive wire harness. I installed this unit in a 1968 Mustang. Had to make my own harness. I cut the wire loom off of the old unit and soldered the Clarion wires to the old Molex loom to make a simple P&P. I was able to bench solder the loom, so no hanging upside down with a hot iron. I connected the Molex to the car's wiring with the Clarion plugs hanging out of the DIN hole. Plug them into the back of the Clarion, push it into the DIN box, done. Great sound for the bucks. [ Burt   Jul 13, 2014 ]
    • What $250 adapter? The adapters to install it come free or cheaply from Crutchfield. [ GREG   Jul 12, 2014 ]
    • This will depend largely on your vehicle. For details on installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what you will need for an installation. [ Greg Staff  Jul 12, 2014 ]
My vehicle (03 expedition) requires the factory amp voltage reducer that needs to be plugged into sub out... Does that mean I have to use the only available amp output and can not add a sub/amp? [ Mike D  Jul 10, 2014 ]

Will I be able to play Spotify via USB with my Samsung Galaxy S5 through this? [ barbs1424  Jun 15, 2014 ]
    4 answers
    • I don't think so. First, the Clarion FZ150 has no bluetooth. Second, when you connect your phone, at least in my experience (I own a Galaxy S2), the stereo will only connect to your phone's internal SD card. This will prevent the ability to steam apps via USB that utilize a cell provider's network connectivity. You'll only be able to play music saved to your internal SD card. However, the Clarion does have an AUX port on the front that would permit you to play Spotify on your vehicle's speakers. [ EDWARD   Jul 13, 2014 ]
    • I think it would since the USB is an input source. You may have to call technical support though. [ Randy   Jul 02, 2014 ]
    • Have not tried the USB port yet,but love this product. The SD slot has fit my needs so far.Good luck. [ Mike   Jun 17, 2014 ]
