Built-in Bluetooth® from Parrot

This isn't just Bluetooth, it's Parrot Bluetooth. Parrot, an industry leader in Bluetooth electronics, brings you the convenience of hands-free calling, plus wireless music streaming from your Android Smartphone. The M303 uses a built-in microphone to pick up your end of the conversation, and you have the option of adding an external mic for even better call clarity.

Sculpt the sound you want

The M303 is built for long-lasting durability, but it's also designed to give you outstanding sound. The 3-band parametric equalizer lets you adjust the highs, mids, and lows to suit your preferences, while the bass boost circuit is always ready to add a little extra boom to your boating. You can use the built-in frequency filters and sub controls to get the best possible performance from your system.

Terrestrial and satellite radio-ready

Clarion's excellent AM/FM tuner hauls in plenty of stations when you're within range. And this receiver works with the latest SiriusXM tuner (not included), so you can enjoy satellite radio's amazing variety of entertainment, news, and sports channels when you're miles and miles offshore.

Remote (control) possibilities

    Marine Rated

Marine Tested: The Clarion M303 Marine CD receiver has been engineered and tested for use in the harsh marine environment. The M303 meets ASTM B117 and ASTM D4329 guidelines ensuring the receiver's resistant to salt, fog and UV exposure. The receiver features a drip shield chassis to keep water from dripping onto the unit's internal circuits. In addition, the head unit's PCB and microprocessor are conformal coated to protect them from corrosion.

Water Resistant Covers (optional): Even though the conformal coating makes the receiver water-resistant, it is still recommended that it be used with a universal marine cover such as the Metra (120999005B, sold separately) or Scosche (142ACM1, sold separately).

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology (powered by Parrot): The Clarion M303 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 2.0+EDR (powered by Parrot), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: The Clarion M303 may not be compatible with all Bluetooth enabled phones or audio players. Visit Clarion Bluetooth Support for complete list of compatible phones and players.

Pairing: Before using your Bluetooth enabled device, it must be paired to the M303. You can register up to five Bluetooth enabled cell-phones with the Clarion marine head unit (only one paired phone can be used at a time). The Clarion M303 can be paired with most Bluetooth enabled mobile phones, including the Apple iPhone and most Android Smartphones.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ Integrated Microphone): The M303 supports Bluetooth hands-free communication from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The M303 can be set to automatically answer your incoming calls and mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can instantly carry on a phone conversation hands-free. An integrated front-panel microphone carries on your side of the conversation while your car's speakers are used to hear the other person. You can make a call by entering the phone number, selecting a contact from your Phonebook list, or using the Call History Log of received/dialed/missed calls.

    • Answering A Call: During an incoming call, the caller's phone number will be seen on the unit's LCD and a ring-tone will be heard through your car stereo speakers. You can then manually answer the incoming call from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can also set the unit to automatically answer an incoming call within 5 seconds.
    • Making A Call: You can make a call using the Clarion marine head unit's front-panel controls.
      • Direct Dial: Outgoing calls can be made be entering telephone numbers (0-9, *, #, +) directly via the car stereo's rotary control knob.
      • Phonebook: You can search for contact names in your mobile phone's phonebook from the Clarion M303 and then make your call. The head unit can store up to 500 contact numbers.
      • Call Log: You can also make a call by searching your mobile phone's call history (Received/Dialed/Missed) from the Clarion M303.
      • Redial: You can simply redial the last number dialed with a press of a single button on the marine head unit.

Optional External Microphone: The Clarion RCB-199 (020RCB199, sold separately) is an external microphone which can be connected to Clarion M303. The RCB-199 external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of the head unit. The microphone features an attached 13.25' cord terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector which plugs into the microphone input on the rear-chassis of your compatible Clarion head unit. The microphone also features an integrated sun-visor clip for mounting the external microphone in your vehicle. The integrated bracket allows the microphone to swivel left-to-right and rotate up-or-down.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ metadata): The Clarion M303 also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The M303 will be able to control your stored music's basic playback functions; such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, and Fast-Forward/Reverse. The M303 also supports audio streaming of music apps from your smartphone with basic control and metadata display. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

    AM/FM+Pandora+SiriusXM Radio

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion M303 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner offering manual, seek, & preset tuning. 18 FM station presets and 6 AM station presets can stored. Stations can be stored manually or automatically. Preset scan receives the stations stored in the unit's preset memory in order. This function is useful when searching for a desired preset station. You can also store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source. When Local seeking is turned "On", only those radio stations with strong radio signal can be received.

Pandora App: The Pandora App (free) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Clarion M303 using your connected Apple iPhone, via the USB/Dock cable supplied with your iPhone. The Clarion M303 provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list and sort them by date or alphabetically (A-Z). Or, you can create a new station from the current playing artist or song. You can also skip song tracks within a station. You can even give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

SiriusXM Ready: The Clarion M303 comes ready for SiriusXM programming with access to XM & Sirius Satellite Radio stations. Thanks to its proprietary SiriusXM Connect port, you can add the optional SXV200V1 SiriusXM Connect tuner and receive more than 150 channels of exclusive programming directly from SiriusXM, via the "SiriusXM All Access" package (subscription required). Visit SiriusXM.com for a complete list of subscription options & channel guide. Additional features of the SXV200 SiriusXM Connect tuner include:

    • Information such as Channel Name, Artist Name, & Song Title can be viewed on the head unit's display
    • Category Search feature lets you search for channels within a certain genre or category

    • Replay feature lets you pause, fast-forward, or rewind up to 60 minutes of live content
    • iTunes Tagging for your connected iPod or iPhone
    • Channels containing content unsuitable for children can be blocked
Note: SiriusXM Satellite Radio operates on the XM Network. However, you can easily add this SiriusXM tuner to an existing Sirius or XM account for a Multi-Radio Discount Plan.

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit also supports playback of MP3/WMA music files loaded onto CD-R/RW discs.

    iPod/Aux Integration

iPod Direct Connection: The Clarion' M303's rear-panel USB port also acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. An additional iPod cable is available (469USBPOD, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. f you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5/5C/5S; use the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the Clarion marine head unit.

    • iPod DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 1-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 83dB.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Auxiliary Input: The M303 features a rear-panel stereo Auxiliary input, so you connect your external portable audio player or portable satellite radio receiver to this head unit. You can set the Auxiliary input sensitivity level to Low, Mid, or High to match the volume output of your connected external audio device.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Clarion M303 employs a MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) power amplifier capable of delivering 45W (Peak) x 4ch of high quality sound with superior linearity & less distortion than conventional power amps, even with the volume cranked up.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the M303 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the M303 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 19 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 45 watts x 4 channels (180 watts total)

BeatEQ: BeatEQ lets you tune the sound to your liking, depending on the category of music, for a more fulfilling listening experience. The Clarion CD receiver provides 4 preset EQ curves (Bass Boost, Impact, Excite, Off) and 1 custom EQ curve. Bass Boost emphasizes the bass portion of your music; Impact emphasizes the bass & treble portions of your music; Excite emphasizes bass, midrange & treble portions of your music; while Flat sets the bass, midrange, & treble to 0. The Custom EQ lets you freely customize the frequency, Q-factor, and level of the bass, midrange, & treble.

BeatEQ (Custom Mode) Frequency Q-Factor Level
    Bass 50Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz 0.7, 1, 1.4, 2.0 -7 to + 7 dB
    Midrange 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz
    Treble 5kHz, 10kHz, 15kHz
Note: BeatEQ settings are applied to all sources.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass Extend feature does not adjust the low frequencies like the normal sound adjustment function, but emphasizes the deep bass frequencies to provide you with a dynamic sound. This circuit boosts bass at an ultra-low frequency of about 50Hz, creating a rich, deep, defined bass rather than the muddy, booming bass of a standard loudness control. What is more, boost levels are dependent on the system volume, resulting in balanced system response and dynamic bass reproduction.

4ch/2V Preamp Output: The Clarion M303 features 4ch/2V RCA line level outputs (Front/Rear). The unit's rear preamp outputs can be configured as a dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer output with a low-pass filter and level control (+/-6).

Built-in Crossovers: The Clarion M303 is equipped with built-in low-pass and high-pass crossovers.

    • Low-Pass Subwoofer Filter: The Low-Pass Filter (LPF) for the subwoofer preamp output will send only the low frequency range through the preamp outputs to ensure superb performance with a connected subwoofer. The low-pass filter can be set to 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range).
    • High-Pass Filter: The M303 features a High-Pass Filter (HPF) for the unit's front & rear channels, via speaker-output or preamp-output. You can adjust the high-pass filter from 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range). The HPF prevents low bass notes from distorting your front & rear speakers. The high-pass filter setting effects both the front & rear channels of the head unit.

Beep: The marine head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Ergonomic Face Design: The Clarion M303 features an easy-to-use rotary volume control and easy-to-read illuminated buttons on the face which are laid out in an asymmetrical design to place the most used features within a specific area for ease of use and less user distraction.

Digital LCD: The single-line digital LCD, with white background and black characters, on the M303 allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in all lighting conditions.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Screen Saver: This unit is provided with a Screen Saver function which allows you to show various kinds of patterns and characters in the operation status indication area of the display in a random order. You can turn this function on or off. If the button operation is performed with the screen saver function on, the operation display corresponding to the button operation is shown for about 30 seconds and the display returns to the screen saver display.

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-case is included to protect the unit's faceplate when detached. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit

    Remote Control

Optional Remote Control: The unit is equipped with a rear mounted DIN connector to accommodate an optional Clarion wired marine remote control (020MW1; sold separately). You can also choose to add on the Clarion MF marine RF remote control (020MF1, sold separately). When the wired remote and RF remote are used in combination with one another, a Y-adapter is required (020MWRYC, sold separately).

    Clarion Marine Stereo

Written By Islandog1, Chester, MD on Monday, August 11, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo was actually for a friend's boat. His original stereo is 13 years old and it really made sense to update with a Bluetooth capable unit. The wiring harnesses didn't match, but I was surprised how easy it was to make the proper connections anyway. And then the improvement in sound was amazing. I couldn't believe how great the finished system sounded. The original unit was a Clarion, but the new one is ten times better sounding. And of course it has BT capability. On a boat, Blutooth is really convenient. This project really turned out awesome.
    Pros:
Everything about this project was positive, I still can't believe the performance of the new Clarion stereo and how easy the replacement was to install.
    Cons:
    Nothing

    Easy Installation, great sound

Written By Pier Pressure, Charlotte, NC on Thursday, August 07, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit replaced an older Clarion FM/Cassette which came factory installed with the boat. The speaker/power multi pin connector was identical to the older unit so installation was a breeze. The old wired remote was not compatible however, (no surprise with the additional features) but the Clarion MF1 radio remote works perfectly without any programming. Replacing the old Clarion with this unit was as easy as plug and play. Custom 3 band equalizer gives a nice rich sound although i may still upgrade to a power amp. One minor correction to the specs: The face has a blue and white display.... nice indirect lighting in the cabin. Note that the four pre-amps can power either four speakers or two speakers and a sub-woofer. Have yet to connect with Blue Tooth so hoping that goes as well.
    Pros:
Easy installation, great sound, detachable face, looks great. lots of features
    Cons:
USB and Aux input are on the back rather than front, wires must be routed somewhere to be accessible.

How hard is it to make a BlueTooth Stereo for a Boat?

Written By Lou, New Buffalo, Mi on Monday, July 07, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my older Clarion with this one with the desire to take advantage of the Bluetooth connection. My biggewst complaint is the Bluetooth appears to only work with Apple porducts. How hard is this? In my car I am able to hook any device I want though my Bluetooth. Marine Stereos are really behind the times in myh opinion. This unit also does not connect with my old remote and the new remote is roughly the price of the stereo.
    Pros:
The sound is equal to my old unit.
    Cons:
Bluetooth is very limiting. The user interface is horrible. Who ever has the job of designing this unit should find another proffesion.

    Great Receiver

Written By Jim B., Orlando, FL on Friday, April 11, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had an old Clarion Cassette radio that originally came in my ski boat. I wanted to upgrade to something more modern with the capability to connect my iPod. It has many other features, but this was the main feature I wanted. This is a great receiver/radio that has really great sound and all the best features that I could have wanted in a stereo unit for my boat. I had to call customer service to ask one simple installation question and I was pleasantly surprised that their tech assist line was open late on a Saturday afternoon. The person that answered the tech line knew the answer right away and I was off the phone with the answer in only a couple of minutes. I got it connected and Wow! It sounds great, looks cool and I love it! Now, I can't wait to add an amp and upgrade the speakers. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and I am really happy with Crutchfield and the Clarion product.
    Pros:
    It's packed full of features.
    Cons:
You gotta read the instruction/owner's manual to figure out all the features and the functionality of the many buttons. It's easy after you spend a few minutes with the manual.

Only 4 pre amp outs? RU kidding me?

Written By Conkyjoe, Fla on Thursday, April 03, 2014

Manual written by monkeys. If you want to amp a sub you lose amping rear speakers. Why Clarion didn't include 6 outs on this unit is incredibly stupid.
    Pros:
    Standard stuff
    Cons:
Menu for audio setup is difficult to understand. Why not have USB input on front of head unit like everybody else?

    Misleading details in Specifications

Written By David S, Chicago, IL on Friday, July 26, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

According to the Specifications, this was supposed to be the radio that is compatible with the old MW2 remotes for a boat. It is not, forcing you to either buy foreign parts, or buy new cables and remotes and rewire the complete system. The box is plainly marked, yet doesn't work, even after calling Clarion tech support. At $130.00 each, these remotes, plus the 25 ' cable at $30.00 times 2 or more is cost probhibitve.
    Pros:
Has the USB option for the IPhone, and Pandora
    Cons:
Had to rework Stereo connections; Buy a Canadian Y Adapter to make old wired remotes work; Cost extra Labor Does not take the 6 CD changer anymore either.

Love it so far, especially the floating remote

Written By TN Boater, Middle Tennessee on Wednesday, June 05, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love it so far. It sounds great. The controls are intuitive. The Iphone Bluetooth connection has worked flawlessly. I hve my XM coming through the aux on the back and it is working great. Looks good too.

What I really really love is the floating waterproof remote. I do not have to be at the back of the boat to control the stereo. I also have it mounted by the driver so that when underway I can run the stereo without having to lean over.

I have not done it yet, but I believe I can be on a ski behind the boat and still control the stereo -- although I am not really into having the music so load boarders and skiers can hear it. People go to the lake to get away from the City noise -- why bring it to the lake. But I bet I can if I wanted to!
    Pros:
Bluetooth, controls, ipod/iphone charging, available floating remote, and having crutchfield there if you need support (they will have your back if needed?)
    Cons:
The mounting bracket for the available remote could be better. You have to use a really tiny screw to have the screw not cause the bracket to interfere with the remote. This should be an easy engineering fix. As it, it nearly renders the mounting bracket inoperable.

    Pros:
Good Quality Sound from all input sources, CD, FM, AUX, USB, Blutooth. Able to play Pandora and XM SAT via my iPhone using Blutooth along with my other music in my library.
    Cons:

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very satisfied with this stereo. Using it in my boat paired with a MW1 remote. I have it paired with my iPhone 4S. Nice having the ability to plug in via USB and have full control of the iPod as well as pandora control. Or switch over to Bluetooth audio streaming and I can still switch to next song on iPod or pandora. In Bluetooth streaming as well as usb, the radio and mw1 show all the track info which is nice to see. When a call comes in the called id is shown on both the radio and Mw1 remote as well.
    Pros:
USB music connection as well as Bluetooth streaming.
    Cons:
Only 2 sets of pre amp RCA outputs. Clarion should know that many boat owners try to fit as much sound as possible while out on the water. What better way then with amplifiers for all speakers.

    • This is not compatible with Bluetooth wireless speakers. The Bluetooth feature is in Input feature, that allows you to sync your phone to the headunit for handsfree calling and playing music from your phone to the stereo. [ WAYNE   May 23, 2014 ]
    • It is Bluetooth capable for cell phones. It can be used as a hands free device. It will also accept input from the cell phone for items like Panda, Sirius XM. I don't know if it will send the signal out for a wireless speaker. I will have to test my Logitech D200 on my Dad's boat on Memorial Day Weekend. [ KEITH   May 14, 2014 ]

    • what sirius xm tuner works best? [ William   Aug 09, 2014 ]
    • No you need to buy a separate SiriusXM tuner. From Crutchfield website: "Terrestrial and satellite radio-ready, Clarion's excellent AM/FM tuner hauls in plenty of stations when you're within range. And this receiver works with the latest SiriusXM tuner (not included), so you can enjoy satellite radio's amazing variety of entertainment, news, and sports channels when you're miles and miles offshore." [ EDWARD   Mar 11, 2014 ]
I see that the m303 uses rca inputs for the speaker connections. What are you using to convert regular speaker wire over to RCA male to connect up to this unit? Thank you! [ Jeremy  Feb 25, 2014 ]
    1 answer
    • This receiver actually has a harness that ends in bare wire for connecting to speakers (the RCA connections are pre-amp outputs for connecting amplifiers). You can see a diagram of the harness on page 21 of the manual here: http://pix.crutchfield.com/Manuals/020/020M303.PDF [ Jeff Staff  Feb 25, 2014 ]
