Our take on the Clarion MW1

by Ken Nail
Clarion

The MW1 wired remote control lets you manage your Clarion marine receiver from a remote location with ease. You'll be able to change sources, switch radio bands, and also adjust the volume, track selection, toggle play/pause and more — all while checking out your changes on the built-in LCD display. If you've got a big boat, you can add up to three remotes to control a single receiver. This remote is compatible with Clarion's CMV1, CMD6, and M309 marine receivers. Warranty: 1 year.

Note: The MW1 remote comes with a 1-foot cable, so you'll want to purchase Clarion's 25-foot extension cable for installation.

Features

Overview: The MW1 is a hardwired remote control with an LCD display, it is compatible with select Clarion marine head units - CMV1, CMD6, CMD7, CMD8, CMS1, and M309 (as of 4/24/2013). The MW1 has backlit rubber buttons with the following functions:

  • Power/Source
  • Volume Up/Down
  • Up/Down/Left/Right Cursor buttons
  • Enter
  • Play/Pause/Mute
  • Menu/Band

LCD Display: The display briefly shows the volume when it's changed, and can be set to show the time of day or source information; chapter/track, elapsed time, song title (for iPod and CDs with CD Text), band (AM/FM), frequency, and preset number.

Wiring: The attached 12" cable on the MW1 connects to the back of the head unit. Because the attached cable is only a foot long, in most cases an extension cable will be needed (item number 020MWRXCRT, sold separately). Up to three extension cables can be daisy-chained together.

Durable: The MW1 meets ASTM B117 salt/fog exposure and ASTM D4329 UV exposure standards.

Flush Mount: The remote comes with an aluminum flush mount C-clamp. The clamp attaches to the two M4 machine screw studs on the back of the remote and holds it in place.

Remote Dimensions:

  • Diameter: 3.607"
  • Cutout Diameter: 2.994"
  • Mounting Depth: 2.255"
  • Mounting Height: 0.603"

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Extremely easy to install. Great remote features and display is a +++. When M502 head unit is connected to Pandora or Spotify via blue tooth the remote displays all my song titles.
Pros:
Easy to install. Display is a plus.
Cons:
Whish there was a white and gray color scheme option rather than black and chrome.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This remote is larger than and older model Clarion remote I used, and I like the larger size, The remote has easy to use and see bottons and screen. It's very intuitive, easy to use! It has a back lit screen for night use, which is great. If it's too brite for some you can place a piece of Tinted Solar film over the glass screen.
Pros:
Large Size, with easy to use and see buttons, back lit screen for nite use.
Cons:
None!

A Good Choice

Written By Janine, Prescott WI on Wednesday, August 08, 2012

We installed two of these remotes using the splitter cable, one on the fly bridge the other in the aft cabin, with the Clarion marine radio in the salon. They are wonderful and allow good control over the audio player.

I've got one of these in my boat. Wish I would have added it a long time ago. It's awesome and looks awesome too! I can control my Ipod with it since I have the Ipod cable hooked up. Sit in the water and drink beer and flip thru your music.
Pros:
Awesome
Cons:

Just Trying To Find Out If These MW1 Remotes Have The Extra Terminal On The Back? I See That Some Online Have It And Some Don't. Also Just Wanted To Confirm That This Terminal Connection Is For Adjusting The Brightness Of The Display. Thanks! [ Joe  May 03, 2014 ]

  • Thanks guys. I know a lot of the remotes only have the one big wire coming out of the back, but some people I have talked to have an extra terminal in the back (including ones on other sites). I was hoping to find some input on if the terminal is for the brightness (my old clarion remote had one). I want to buy it from Crutchfield along with everything else though, but they still have not been able to tell me why it's there and why theirs doesn't have it. The issue is because of how bright the glare is when boating down the river at night. Thanks again for your replies. [ Joe   May 05, 2014 ]
  • Hello, the MW1 has only the one main wire out the back that plugs directly in to the clarion head unit. There is no extra terminal for display brightness. If it helps, my MW1 is mounted on the outside of my boat right at the swim platform and it has the perfect amount of backlighting. I have no trouble seeing the display in any light. • Joe, the 1 I bought recently only has a single plug out. Not sure what u mean about the brightness [ SCOTT   May 04, 2014 ]
its got connotation in it how to fix it or is trash now? [ luis  Dec 15, 2013 ]
