Clarion

Our take on the Clarion NX409

Put a multimedia station in your vehicle's double-sized dash opening. Clarion's NX409 navigation receiver gives you DVD playback and GPS guidance, along with a host of built-in and optional features. And its big 6.5" touchscreen lets you control your in-dash entertainment system with a tap of your finger. Enjoy watching DVDs up front while you're parked, or hook up a video screen in the back so the kids can watch movies as you drive.

Built-in GPS
No need to fumble with paper maps any more — read your navigation maps easily on the NX409's large screen, and you'll hear street names called out before your next turn. You can search the 12 million points of interest to find nearby attractions, plus dial in a 3D view to help you navigate city streets or changes in elevation.

Killer sound
The NX409 plays your store-bought and recordable CDs and DVDs, including those you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. A powerful internal amp belts out your music with authority, while a premium digital-to-analog converter makes all your tunes sparkle. Three sets of preamp outputs let you add amps and subs to the mix, and the subwoofer volume control lets you dial in just the right amount of bass. Clarion includes a handy remote for on-the-fly changes.

iPod® controls and more
Connect your iPod to the rear USB slot, and you'll get touchscreen control over your tunes — no adapter required, but Clarion offers an automotive-grade cable that lets you keep the other one at home. Add an optional adapter, and you can play videos from your iPod on the 6.5" screen. You'll also find an audio/video input for video games or other sources.

Your options don't end there — add an optional satellite radio tuner and get the nearly endless variety of entertainment available from SIRIUS/XM. Plus you can add Bluetooth® for safer hands-free calling and high-speed music streaming.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The Clarion NX409 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. Unlike many in-dash monitors, there is no hideaway box; all the inputs and outputs are included within the unit's chassis. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional custom double-DIN sleeve (0202DBKT, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to mount the NX409 in a custom 4" opening. As always, please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

Note: This unit does not come supplied with a sleeve to euro-mount the radio.

6.5" Touch Panel TFT Display: The Clarion NX409 has an integrated 6.5" TFT wide screen display with touch panel controls. The display provides a high-resolution video monitor for watching your DVD videos. The screen has a resolution of 1200 x 234 and 280,800total pixels. The display features brightness and shape (4:3 or 16:9) adjustment. The unit's touch panel features interactive controls and video graphics, making menu navigation easy. An on-screen numeric keypad allows you to directly access titles and chapters of a DVD disc. The touch-screen surface is treated to resist dust and grime.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the bright green wire in the supplied 18-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

Audio Section

24-bit D/A Converter: The unit's 24-bit D/A converter re-quantizes the 16-bit audio signals from CDs and DVDs as 24-bit data while maintaining the low distortion and high linearity of a 1-bit D/A converter. This allows an expanded dynamic range and clearer reproduction of subtle nuances, for a richer sound when viewing DVDs or listening to CDs.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the NX409 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the NX409 are as follows:

  • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)

  • Loudness: compensates for low and high tones during low volume

Built-In Navigation

Navigation Software: Navigation data is pre-stored on the unit's 2GB internal flash memory for quick access and response. The NX409 provides map coverage of the United States and Canada. The Clarion NX409's integrated navigation software provides turn-by-turn visual and voice assistance to direct you to your selected destination. The built-in software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included navigation map.

Vehicle Positioning: The built-in navigation software's computer considers vehicle speed an heading changes, together with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on a digital map. Signal from GPS satellites are used to determine the vehicle location. Three (good) or four (best) satellites must be receive to accurately determine location.

Map and Information Database: The integrated map database used by the built-in navigation software was created using high-resolution aerial and land based data collection.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

The volume of the voice prompts can be increased with increases in speed to overcome road noise. Voice guidance can be turned off if you prefer.

Destination Search: The Destination Entry Menu gives you many different ways to choose your destination or insert a waypoint in your current route. An on-screen keyboard appears to allow you to enter your destination from one of the following categories:

  • Home: You can store one home location to allow you to calculate a route home from any current location.
  • Office: You can store one work location to allow you to calculate a route to work from any current location.

In 2D mode you can choose to orient the map in one of two ways; show North at the top of the screen, or show the direction in which you are heading at the top.

Route Priority: You can set the conditions for route calculation; fastest route, avoid freeways, shortest route, avoid toll roads, use ferries, auto reroute (creates a new route if you leave the original).

Route Simulation: You can preview all the route information and simulate travel along a projected route.

Does not fit 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe

Written By RT, Gilroy, CA on Wednesday, April 20, 2011

First off, it did not fit my 2008 Tahoe like Crutchfield said it would. I had to cut
the plastic bracket from the factory radio in order to be able to force it in. I was
not able to attach any of the extras other than the navigation cable because
they hit the metal bar behind the stereo. Second, the steering wheel adaptor
that they offer with this radio only goes up to 2006 model Chevrolets so that
was a waste of time. The radio itself is a good device, the only bad thing about it
was that the radio frequency seemed to diminish and most stations were
staticky.

OK.... BUT....

Written By Mark, Alton, IL on Wednesday, October 27, 2010

The biggest complaint I have is the Nav unit map was over 1.5yrs old when I recieved the
unit. There is very little info out there on how to update this. I went to the teleatlas
website and it didn't even list this unit.

The Ipod interface is frustrating and doesn't allow you to shuffle songs.

There are little quirks with the interface as well. a lot of the settings revert back to old
settings when you turn you car back on (and yes I have it wired correctly so I don't lose
power to the memory when the car is off). Clock uses the GPS to set the time and is
always 5hrs off of CST for the first 30 seconds to 60 seconds then finally updates to the
correct time.

Its not a terrible unit, but could have been a ton bettter with better software. The sound
quality is pretty good.

Good Stereo, DVD Player, sub par Nav

Written By Tim, Spokane, WA on Tuesday, September 14, 2010

I have had this unit for about 6 months. The sound quality is awesome. The ability to put
MP3s on a flash drive and play them is worth the money. The DVD player works great
and haven't had any problems.

Watch that the screen can be mounted in a straight or facing slightly down position. I
have an 06 Tacoma and the unit faces up slightly. This means when the sun is coming
in the windows I can't see the screen at all.

The GPS is not the best. Hopefully an update to the software will fix some of the issues.
It is slow and hard to navigate the menu.

Poor Product

Written By pspay01, Fairview, NJ on Sunday, July 25, 2010

Bought this product 8months ago - Here is whats happening:

1) Unit erases settings, time, presets, etc on its own.
2) Navi is very slow
3) DVDs freeze up
4) Navi gets directions confused (tells you to make left when means make right)
5) Screen shifts like there is some sort of power issue.

I recommend that you find another product. This product was poorly designed...

Great stereo

Written By Mel, Highland, NY on Wednesday, June 23, 2010

I've had this unit installed for about a week. I've had none of the problems I read about in the reviews. The GPS works great and the sound is excellent. It's better than I expected. I got the steering wheel control which works fine. The only problem is it scrolls through the preset radio stations, but doesn't actually change the station.

2 units still problems

Written By , FL on Tuesday, June 22, 2010

The first unit I got had a major problem, it wouldn't play any optical media or connect to USB sources. Crutchfield RMA'd it, I put in the replacement unit, much better. The clock has a mind of its own if you don't sync it to GPS. The user interface is slow to navigate and it doesn't automatically dim with my lights like I thought it would. Navigation is actually better than expected. Its about as accurate as anything else I've used. Nothing has ever recognized my address, this doesn't either. The graphics are somewhat ugly, but it has an excellent signal even in the garage, and the antenna is on my dash!!! I wish Sirius would do that.

The nail in this unit is that now after 3 days installed, its started to flicker. The upper right hand corner of the screen looks like its pulsing. It could be a power issue, but since this is the only thing I've upgraded, I can't see how my car is pumping out enough power.

Also very aggravating is that the unit doesn't have any kind of eq. Just a basic bass and treble adjustment!!! I've never had an aftermarket head unit with so little adjustment.

very meh...

Written By Don, Mt Pleasant, MI on Thursday, June 17, 2010

There is nothing inherently wrong with this unit considering its price but i really miss my Pioneer AVIC-700BT (Nav only). Map graphics are circa 1999 and DVDs stop playing randomly.... if you have the money step up to a higher quality unit but if you need Nav on the cheap this is your best bet
