Cloud connectivity and smart voice recognition

Clarion's NX604 navigation receiver puts you at the center of a multimedia universe from the comfort of your car seat. Whether you're exploring unfamiliar avenues, running errands, road-testing your favorite songs, or simply trying to communicate with others, you can count on this receiver to keep you connected to what's happening currently in the cloud through your smartphone and Clarion's Smart Access app. You also get simplified search through intelligent voice recognition technology, so the receiver can find what you need locally without wasting your valuable time.

Take the Smart Access app for a ride

When you download Clarion's free Smart Access app to your phone, you'll have access to several apps that work within the Smart Access ecosystem. Connect your phone to the NX604, and you'll get fingertip control over those apps through the receiver's screen. You can employ Smart Access through your iPhone® 4 and iPhone 4S using an optional Clarion cable, or use an optional HDMI cable and an Apple Lightning™ Digital AV Adapter combination for iPhone 5 models. You'll use an optional HDMI cable to take advantage of Smart Access through your Android™ phone.

Apps for social media, streaming audio, GPS navigation, traffic, and more are currently available (see below), and most require no additional charges to use them. As more apps are added to the Smart Access platform, Clarion automatically updates the Smart Access app, so you'll gain more functionality without having to do anything. • Personal: email, calendar, news, and weather

Clarion NX604 navigation receiver

Have your say with Clarion Intelligent VOICE™

Clarion's Intelligent VOICE software delivers relevant results quickly and with less input information than most other voice-recognition platforms on the road, thanks to incorporated Google Voice technology. If you're looking for nearby pizza, you won't need to go through multiple steps such as "vicinity search," then "restaurant," then "pizza" — you can just say "pizza, popular restaurant" and the NX604 will perform an immediate search for highly regarded pizza joints in your area. You can then choose one from the list and the receiver will guide you right to it.

Intelligent VOICE doesn't even need you to have a complete thought to know what you're looking for. You can use natural language to ask for a search, and the receiver will find close matches based on up-to-date Google searches. Say "I want to dance" to the NX604 and you'll soon be looking at a list of nearby nightclubs and dance studios. Gone are the days when you had to depend on antiquated searches that required exact phrases or precise language to get any results at all — with the NX604, you can look for things with only partial information or mispronounced words, and you'll likely get a solution within seconds.

Clarion NX604 navigation receiver

A screen for all seasons

You can explore built-in maps of all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Canada through the NX604's beautiful 6.2" screen. You'll also have access to over 11 million points of interest, along with 3D mapping that allows realistic views of terrain, buildings, and landmarks in select metropolitan areas. The display also supports "flick" operation, just like your smartphone. You can drag and drop animated menu icons that'll give your dash a little personality, while allowing you to prioritize functions and A/V sources.

Timely traffic reports

The receiver delivers timely traffic reports in most metropolitan areas through RDS-TMC technology. You'll be able to see congestion along your route as it develops, and choose a more sensible path to your destination before getting stuck. Best of all, these updates require no additional subscription fees.

Bluetooth® for hands-free calls and streaming music

Built-in Bluetooth lets you talk hands-free on your compatible phone so you can keep your hands on the wheel. When a call comes in, you can tap the screen to answer the call and hear your caller over the speakers. And you can even stream tunes if your phone or other device supports it. The NX604 features a built-in microphone, or you can hook up the included external mic to boost the sonic clarity of your conversations.

Incorporate your smartphone even without Smart Access

Connect a compatible Android smartphone to the NX604 with an HDMI cable to enjoy the receiver's Android compatibility, which allows you to see the display of your smartphone right on the receiver's 6.2" display. When you're parked you'll be able to enjoy photos and high-definition video, surf the web, and view your phone's apps on the receiver's screen.

Apple users can enjoy direct iPod® and iPhone audio control with a simple USB connection or via Bluetooth. iPhone 5/5c/5s users will need to add a couple of more adapters, including an HDMI cable and an Apple Lightning™ Digital AV Adapter to get full access to audio and video content from their device.

Pandora® Internet radio as you roam

Take your Pandora stations with you — run the free Pandora app on your phone and control it from the NX604's touchscreen if you'd rather not use Smart Access. You can skip tracks, change stations, and thumbs up/thumbs down songs just like you do online. For the iPhone, you'll need a USB or Bluetooth connection; Android phones control Pandora via Bluetooth.

Sonically superb

The NX604 features a built-in HD Radio tuner which allows you to hear broadcasts in high-quality audio from participating AM/FM stations all over. You can choose from six preset tone settings, or make your own using the 6-band graphic equalizer. The subwoofer volume control lets you dial in just the right amount of bass if you've got a sub hooked up, and you've got high- and low-pass filters for further audio tweaks.

Clarion's unique sound technology makes your music sound great. Their "Intelligent Tune" technology includes Vocal Image Control, which lets you "move" the vocal to different seats in your vehicle. The NX604 also includes Sound Restorer, which brings the quality back to compressed audio files.

Connections galore

The NX604 lets you expand your entertainment options with a wealth of connection points. You'll find a USB input on the receiver's back panel, useful for plugging in a dedicated MP3 player or a flash drive, and you can use the front 3.5mm A/V input and rear RCA A/V inputs for hooking up external sources. The receiver also features a connection for an optional SiriusXM satellite radio tuner, so you can enjoy programming with your subscription. With the help of an optional adapter cable, you can add a rear-view camera for an extra layer of safety. Three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs help you add amplifiers and subwoofers to the mix.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with a new car stereo. Check “Details” for more information, and the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters. If you're not sure if you need an adapter, call, chat, or email an Advisor for help determining what you'll need for your vehicle.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Features are good Function is terrible

Written By RS Colorado, Colorado on Wednesday, October 07, 2015

Very buggy software, crashed about 50% of the time, required restarting the device and/or my phone way too often. Had to return it.

Pros: Good Features, when they worked.

Cons: Needs a lot of improvement with the software connection to my android device. When it did work it was slow.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Functionality is great. Easy setup for bluetooth. Very intuitive functionality overall. The main drawback for me is the display brightness. It is near impossible to see during the day, and I have adjusted the brightness to the max.

    Pros: Intuitive functionality

Cons: Display not bright enough during the day.

Bluetooth and Nav usability are a joke

Written By Aaron, Oregon on Sunday, July 12, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Bluetooth doesn't connect all the time, and when it does, the phone wont transmit voice. The driver can hear the other person talking though. It also ALWAYS forces Pandora to open on the phone, even after you shut it off.

The Nav features are hard to use, and are very cumbersome. I cant just simply put an address in. I have to circumnavigate the menu list to maybe find the option for entering an address. I also cant get the home feature to work, for whatever reason it will not allow me to add a home address. This unit will be getting removed with prejudice and a happy pioneer will replace it!

    Pros: Looks pretty

    Cons: Not really useable.

    Had to return it

Written By Brad, Huntsville, Al on Wednesday, July 08, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, the unit has a lot of great feature and is pretty easy to use. Installation was pretty straight forward, I just had a couple questions and the IT guys were able to answer them quickly. The unit was very slow to boot up, I use to have a cheaper unit that booted up a lot faster, and I started having trouble with the Bluetooth connection. After about a month, the Bluetooth would not connect correctly, I assumed it was my phone. Shortly there after the Bluetooth stopped working all together, so I tried a different phone, I tried rebooting the phones and the radio. I set the radio back to factory settings and deleted my from the Bluetooth set up, nothing worked. I was able to send the unit back without a problem. If it was not for the Bluetooth issue and having to return the unit, I would have given 4 stars... just because of the slow boot up.

Pros: several great features, easy to use

Cons: Bluetooth feature is unreliable, extremely slow boot up.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice product for the price I paid. There was a discount when I got this. I have a Mazda Cx7 with Bose system and factory Nav and needed something that could support bluetooth. The product is nice and overall did what it should, the only reason i'm giving it 4 starts is that its slow to start and the couple of days I used it freez on me. Here are some of the things that other should consider: 1. The factory backup camera will not work with this system. 2. The Steering control do not work for volume on the 2007 model I have. They work fine to control the clock but not the volume on the system. 3. The smart access requires a HDMI cable, will not work via BT as the manual indicates. So make sure you buy the HDMI cable and the adaptor for the phone.

I'm returning the unit, not because the unit has any issue but mainly the backup camera and do not want to spend more in buying a custom backup camera.

    Pros: Good sound quality.

Cons: 1.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is one of the nicest Nav units I have installed. The display is bright and easy to read. The touchscreen is very good. The menus are quite easy to navigate, and the Navigation is very good. The Bluetooth setup wasn't hard and the sound quality is very good. The HD radio greatly improves the sound quality of FM stations. Overall, this unit is the best bargain in Navigation radios.

Pros: Nice look and feel, Great screen and nice sound quality.

Cons: Cable for backup camera sold separately, In order to link a smartphone, you have to plug the phone into an HDMI connector on the REAR of the UNIT.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I like the unit. However the unit is very slow to start-up and the USB is intermittent. Songs drop in and out. Changed cables and checked Ipod cables, but nothing has corrected it yet. Will reach out to Crutchfield Customer service for more support and see what they recommend.

    Pros: Excellent sound, easy install

    Cons: Slow start-up, USB issues

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love the unit. Looks great in my 13 year old Mercedes. The smart Access can be a bit troublesome to work out. Turns out the my Motorola Droid Maxx is not supported by this unit. I'm use to using Alpine units. Clarion is very well put together.

Pros: Everything you want. why spend over $1000.

Cons: Not supported by all the devices.

All in All a nice unit

Written By Jonathon F, Indiana on Tuesday, May 19, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All in All a nice unit considering all the features you get for the price. The navigation works very well and has a lot of bells and whistles. The audio sounds good but true audiophiles wont like the band pass choices for the sub outputs.

I haven't had any problems getting it to connect to my Droid Maxx via bluetooth. My phone doesn't have MHL so I cant use most of the features in the Smart Access app but to be honest, I see no need for any of the apps that are available anyhow. The Intelligent Voice part works just fine with only a bluetooth connection as well as the hands free calling. I'm not a Pandora user so I cant speak to that.

One thing Clarion/Naviextras should make clear is that in order to upgrade the maps you have to download and install the Naviextras Toolbox app on your PC. There is absolutely no guidance on either website about this and it can be frustrating to figure out. Additionally, I haven't been able to find the text-to-speech settings that will allow it to announce street names. Not that big a deal since they are prominently displayed on screen.

Pros: Lot's of features for the price

Cons: Scrolling through large catalogs of music on USB or SD cards is tedious.

    Very Nice Unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice unit, easy to install. Just know that you will need another 50 dollars to mirror a Iphone and 40 dollars to mirror a Android. Then whatever it cost for a back up camera also. Navigation part is great and love the functions.

Pros: Very nice, and easy to install. Great Price!

Cons: Extra stuff needed to mirror.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Has everything except the kitchen sink and works with both iPhone and Android phones. I just wish it had easier access to the bass controls, but that is small potatoes. The navi works great and the Sirius XM tuner plugged in and works flawlessly with the receiver.

Pros: Navi is good, suprisingly, has an alert to tell you when you are going over the speed limit. Flexible for both iPhone and Android phones and devices.

Cons: No quick access to bass adjustment, but not a big deal. Have issues with microphone working, but I need to recheck the connection in the back.

    Disappointing response/Lag

Written By Jeff, Nebraska on Thursday, May 14, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unfortunately, this receiver had a lot of potential but failed execution.

This unit struggles with USB playback in a big way. If the unit even detects the USB drive on startup, it often takes literal minutes for the interface to become useable to navigate menus. Also changing between tracks is an irritating affair as the unit take 5-10 second to play the next track after pressing the on screen command to proceed to the next track. Slow response times and laggy controls are the prevalent theme throughout all of the menus of this device.

I'm very disappointed as I had always known Clarion to make quality products but sadly it doesn't seem to extend to their navigation units. The unit is just not pleasurable to use in any way.

Pros: -Navigation is functional -Sound quality when music can actually play is good.

Cons: - Extremely slow response times for everything -Constant issues with USB drives not being recognized or taking a long time to be recognized -Poor user experience is a detriment to all aspects of the unit.

    Clarion NX604 in a 2010 Tacoma

Written By ac, Texas on Sunday, May 10, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the Toyota JBL unit on my truck. It already had a Fosgate Amp and subwoofer that replaced the puny JBL sub so it sounded good to begin with. First and foremost this unit makes everything sound great. Secondly, it looks really good. Overall I would recommend this unit.

Pros: I have an android phone and the unit works great with Pandora. I bought an hdmi cable and after some fiddling I can mirror my phone on the unit and even get Netflix to show. Connect it to bluetooth, run the smart access app, then connect hdmi. Make sure it is powered. Stereo tuner has HD, it does sound better! Thd GPS is awesome.

Cons: Biggest con is you need to have the parking brake engaged if you want to watch video. You also cannot watch movies off USB. And for some reason you cannot rearrange the home screen icons.

    Good unit

Written By Kris, Boston, MA on Sunday, May 10, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall it's a good unit, wouldn't say great, but not bad either. Has a lot of functions, and the bluetooth works great. It's tough to get it to connect with an Android phone for its smartlink application though. Navigation works well too, and the unit itself is very customizable. Biggest downfall for me is that I can't get my phone to link to its smartlink, and the unit lags a little when using the touch screen. Overall good unit, but maybe a little too pricey for what you're getting.

    Pros: Bluetooth, navigation, XM, customizable

Cons: Android connectivity, screen lag, no USB port on front (had to run cable extension from back, which is included though)

Written By Jake, North Carolina on Wednesday, May 06, 2015

This is probably the worst unit I have ever purchased and the worst experience I have had with Crutchfield since I became a customer with them over 30 years ago. The fit is terrible. The adapters for my Audi are bulky, confusing, and almost impossible to figure out. Mind you, I am not a novice at installation with over 30 years of doing this. The radio receiver will not pick up any stations, none, period. Unless I am within 10 miles of the actual radio station! I was a huge fan of Clarion before this purchase. Now, just this morning the unit is giving my some type of memory error and has locked up and won't do anything. So, I am on my computer trying to search for an answer. I spent this much for this piece of garbage, and cannot with any clear conscience recommend this unit at all.

Cons: see my review for the long list...

Crutchfield response on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. We'll either help him get the receiver working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds great but the software update put out by Clarion did not touch the issues. You Can Not use the smart access features and then switch to using Bluetooth. I have read other forums where people are all having the same issues. If you want a great sound with HD radio and GPS , Buy it... If you want Smart Phone features Don't.

Pros: Great sound , HD radio, Good phone connectivity for handsfree.

Cons: Bluetooth connectivity for everything but the handsfree. Needs Software update. You cannot change the main menu or arrange the Icons so if you don't have SiriusXM, you are stuck with the icon on the main menu while the Icon you need for pandora requires scrolling to get to. The constant no connectivity screens are also a problem. Most features of this Unit use bluetooth for some reason or another but the software won't allow it to switch between types automatically.

This unit sounds great, has all the features and is king on value.

Cons: Not to much, maybe a bit hard to set up Bluetooth, but not really.

    Bluetooth 'mostly' works

Written By Miles, Watsonville CA on Tuesday, April 28, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My reasons for buying this is Bluetooth handsfree phone and audio plus navigation. Things work but awkwardly. If you want voice activated navigation you need to install the SmartAccess app on you phone. This comes with only a one year free service. I am not sure what it cost after that or if it will be worth it. The problem is that if you set up to use this feature you will not be able to use Bluetooth audio. The obvious work around would be to load all you audio onto a memory card and slip it into the front panel. Problem here is that the unit can only decode MP3 and WMA. No AAC, no MP4 let alone FLAC or any HD audio. So I am back to using the front aux input for the music and audio books on my Android. The handsfree Bluetooth phone connection works fine with the built in microphone but there are disappointments here too. Most new cars have voice activated phone book search. Sorry, not here. Just an on screen phone book in alphabetical order. I don't see anyway to even add a few favorites. I worked around this by prefixing AA to my frequently called numbers so they are always at the top of the list. I am not too interested in playing video on this unit.

Pros: Anyway, for the price, this is a good unit. The radio is great, user interface is good, navigation works. I have most everything I need so I am keeping it. I think this is mostly old tech and newer models will be better.... but more expensive. If you want more: Look carefully for audio codex support. Look for multiple Bluetooth connections. Look for voice activated phonebook search. Crutchfield comparison charts should show these details but mostly they don't.

    Clariion - Great Unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Clarion NX604 and backup camera from Crutchfield to upgrade the unit in my Lincoln Aviator and add backup camera. First the pricing was excellent. I purchased from the Outlet store and the unit looks new(no scratches, etc), so saved a little that way too. Second, the service from Crutchfield is excellent. They guided me through some install questions. Their help along with the very detail install instructions made the installation easy. It took about a two day period to install the unit and back up camera. It was not hard just time consuming. I love it. The unit is easy to use and looks really nice. The sound quality is great. Bluetooth has great sound when on the phone. The back camera Crutchfield recommended works very well too. I love the fact that the Clarion unit does not have to be on or booted up for the backup camera to work. Wiring backup camera was a little challenging. Overall very satisfied and great price. Saved several hundreds of dollars by purchasing at Crutchfield and doing install myself.

Pros: Looks, features, sound quality, ease of use.

Cons: Time to install. Not hard to do, just allow time.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this head unit from Crutchfield -- best price on the web when I was shopping -- and installed it into my commuter box 2007 Chevy Aveo two weekends ago. Installation was a breeze thanks to the guides and tools I got from Crutchfield. The audio improvement with just the NX604 head unit is dramatic. The head unit puts out 18 watts per channel -- not much compared to the amps i'll be installing in the future -- but more than enough to make the stock speakers really pop. radio reception, both FM and Sirius XM (i got the adapter) is outstanding. I find the highest fidelity music comes from the 25 gigabytes of music i loaded onto the micro SD card. As a result I've never used the bluetooth streaming feature because I have more music on my head unit than on my phone! The GPS navigation system works really well, as does the Google Intelligent Voice search feature associated with it. Bluetooth hands free phone call quality is outstanding, using the included microphone which I mounted above the rear view mirror, away from the driver's window and noise. Updating the head unit firmware and the GPS maps were both a breeze, just download to one of the two micro SD cards, reinstall into the unit, and voila! (only the 8 GB GPS maps card is included with the NX604, but I have dozens of these cards lieing around now.) I've been using this unit for a couple of weeks now and absolutely love it. It looks great too!

Pros: NX604 has everything from my must have list: - Sirius XM ready - Blue tooth (music streaming plus hands free phone) - USB and USB charging (via included extension cable) - 4v RCA pre outs for amplifier(s) and future expansion - Double DINN - Responsive touch screen - GPS - 6 band Graphic equalizer - Google Intelligent Voice - HDMI jack and screen mirroring from android phone - back up camera jack - Second video out/dual screen capable - Micro SD card for audio/video files (32G) - e

Cons: The Google Intelligent Voice search feature of Smart Access is really nice and works well with the built in GPS naviation system. The rest of the Smart Access suite of apps available is, well, meh.

    Cons: Not enough apps

Overall pleased but with a few quirks

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I'm really pleased with the unit. I recently installed it in a 2000 Nissan Maxima originally with a Bose system. I also installed the Accele RVCLPMB Low Profile License Plate Camera as I've used that on another vehicle with great success. Navigation works great out of the box. It even suggested an alternate route to work when it realized there was significant traffic ahead so that's a plus. Using the Intelligent Voice (once you get it working) is cool, but the results aren't consistent. I'll ask specifically for a Chevron gas station which I know is only a mile away, but the results are for other locations in different towns. The HD radio is great. What I don't like is the display for the artist and song name is significantly smaller than radio station names and other information. I don't care about the station information, I want to know who's singing the song! I'm currently struggling with the bluetooth connectivity with a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and an IPhone 4s. While I can connect and talk on the phone, play via bluetooth or Pandora, the connection isn't as seamless like my other vehicle. Often I have to fiddle with the phone or the HU to make the connection. The information in Pandora or Bluetooth isn't updating with the next song. I can still control from the HU, but the information showing is stuck on the first song. The equalizer could definitely be improved. The default settings are terrible. Hopefully I'll be able to work through these quirks.

Pros: Built in navigation spot on so far. It even recommends alternate routes. HD radio gives access to multicast stations. You can set up three different FM stations for a total of 18 stations. (Who really listens to that many stations?). Microphone is included for using phone. Phone works fine for driving around town and is convenient.

Cons: Display for radio is big on buttons but not on information. Song name and artist name are very small relative to all other information being shown. Currently struggling with bluetooth connectivity with Galaxy Note 4 and IPhone4s. Sometimes the automatic brightness setting gets stuck to the "Night" setting during the day and you can't see crap. Equalizer default settings suck. People say I sound like I'm in a empty room when using bluetooth phone. They say I sound better on speaker phone.

    Great Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I spent a lot of time researching a replacement for my factory Bose system in my 2005 Chevy 2500HD. The factory system finally stopped working and I wanted to replace it with a navigation system. I needed to replace the speakers as well. I listened to this new stereo after installing it before I purchased new speakers and I was surprised at how much better it sounded even with the old worn out speakers. Installation was not too difficult and Crutchfield was very helpful with a few questions I had in regard to the installation. I would like to see the stereo boot up faster. I'm used to hearing music as soon as I start my truck, but it takes about five or ten seconds with the Clarion NX604. Considering all the new benefits I have with this system, I don't mind the boot up time though. The navigation system works very well and the Smart Access system is very convenient. I purchased and installed new Polk speakers a week after installing this new receiver and the sound is excellent. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and I would definitely recommend the Clarion NX604.

Pros: User friendly, Great sound, Great features

Cons: Slow boot up time, needs more frequencies available for adjustment in the equalizer.

I've only had it a week, and I haven't tried all the bells and whistles, but so far I'm loving this head unit.

Pros: Very nice sound, lots of options, and map updates are free.

Cons: The SD card is hard to remove by hand, no eject or spring to help.

Works, with a ton of gadgetry that you might not need.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The HU at first had an issue with the rca output cable being pinned incorrectly. Once that was remedied the HU works about as expected. There were some bugs, but a firmware update seemed to fix the issues I had so far. I do not use the phone connectivity such as Google voice etc. Sounds good, has a fair amount of control through the EQ. The sub output seems lower than expected, might just be how they control the sub output. At 0 there isn't much going on, have to have set at 3+ to match the sub output from a previously installed JL Cleansweep. NOTE: The HU has lines for backup camera, Do not buy a backup camera with lines in the display. If you do you will have one set of permanent lines that you can not move or adjust or make disappear. The camera lines built into the camera are permanently there. Used a cc510 camera and now have two sets of lines, the ones adjustable are correct, the other lines are just stuck there useless. It is nice that you can adjust lines on screen for any camera. Clarion should have made their camera without lines or able to delete said lines so you don't have two sets.

The sd slot is not spring assisted. You have to have long nails to remove the card. Kind of a pain for most men. But at least it has a slot. Overall for the functions you get, the nav, 4v rca outputs, front sd slot and aux, it is a great value. If all you want is sound, go with a different unit and save money or increase adjustment capability.

Pros: Great value, 4v outputs, built in nav. A bunch of other functions you can use with a phone connected if you chose to do so. Also has secondary output for screens in the back seat.

Cons: Non spring assisted sdmicro slot. Some small quirks. At least Clarion puts out firmware updates which are easily downloadable to fix issues as they go. Also when on bluetooth calls and reverse is engaged, the camera activates there is feedback to the person on the other line. Have not figured out why yet.

    Exceeded Expectations

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, this system seems to be exceeding all of my expectations. I loved the ease of use for the navigation on this unit. I've read many complaints about the street names not being announced over the speakers, but I turned that feature off anyway since I listen to music. This unit allows you to change songs and stations while using the NAV as well. The DVD/CD feature works as it should and haven't had any issues.

Back up camera; I bought and installed all clarion parts needed. I disliked that you must purchase an input cable to connect the camera, since most receivers I've used in the past already have an input for a camera. Other than that it's the same process as any other camera install. The stereo does take a while to boot up, but the camera feature will work even if the stereo hasn't booted. In fact the camera will work if you can start the car, wait 2 seconds, and shift into reverse. I love this!

Bluetooth: I have a note 4 and I haven't had one issue with the hands-free or music. I'm glad this set-up came with the mic too.

Negatives: I did not like the equalizer on this unit. The sound took a lot of tweaking to get to my likings., and the presets were all really poorly tuned. Of course, if you have an amplifier, all of this shouldn't be an issue.

Pros: Camera, DVD/CD, navigation, Bluetooth/hands free

Cons: Equalizer (which won't matter much if you amplify), a little lag but it's not a deal breaker.

Harkens back to the quality of Clarion when it was in it's hay-day. Nice design, fit is perfect, design of unit is clean, functions nearly beautifully. Opinion still out on the voice component, need the additional capes to get the interface to work correctly.... I hope.

Pros: Nice design, great functions, easy to use, back up camera works well.

Cons: Iphone interface could be a bit easier, not bad, but not what Pioneer and Alpine's is. You have to buy the additional cables to make it all work in a streamline fashion.

    OK Unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Mostly happy with the unit. Sound quality is good. It's easy to navigate from screen to screen. I've only used the Nav system, Radio, and Bluetooth so far. They are easy to configure and use. The navigation system is intuitive and works as well as other units I have used. The unit came with a free Clarion backup camera. Works great, even in low light. I like that even if the using it booting up, once I go into reverse, the backup comes upright away.

There are a couple of quirky things that I'm still trying to figure out. I have a Kenwood unit in my other car and once I paired my phone, I was able to make call and play music using voice commands. With this unit, I still haven't got the Smart Access to work. I have an iPhone and an Android and neither one works. I'm sure I'll figure it out but it shouldn't be this hard. Also the Nav system has a strange behavior in that when you arrive at your destination, it doesn't end the trip. You have to manually cancel it.

Pros: Great sound quality, screen layout, Nav system and got it for a great price

Cons: Voice commend not working as expected. I think I need to buy additional cables. Overly complex for something thing that should just work.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Loving it so far! Installed in a 2003 Santa fe gls. Install was a breeze ( hour and a half, with routing, pre wired everything) the way was already paved by crutchfield, there is a how to at the website on the same vehicle! The best part was I knew to install the mounting kit upside down and a little lower than the original ( monsoon sound system). Btw, I omitted the use of the scosche interface, my system sounds tons better than the original. All speakers work and perform as they should, it's plenty loud, even on highway ( original speakers and tweeters). It gets me where I have to go with no gps suctioned to the window,YAY. Intuitive to learn, clear screen, dvd and CD play fine ( except I own only blu Ray, had to go to mom's house to find a DVD:) HD radio a big plus to me, allows me access to crystal clear radio and channels I want, although I can use sirius ( subscription service radio). I have unlimited data,I prefer iheart, or Pandora and always have a 64 gig thumb drive of music with me. Works fine with my iPhone or Android. Still have to install the back up camera clarion also, just got the led frame this week, that will be more work, or I'll find an installer.

Pros: Clear direction, great screen. Makes an old truck feel new! Excellent sound, stereo separation. Intuitive settings menu, hard buttons( yeah you get a smaller screen, but I like them) relatively quick to change into navigation.

Cons: Speed limit nagging( you can make this visual only though, or off).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far my experience with the NX 604 has been excellent. I did a lot of research before buying the unit so I knew what to expect. I installed it in my 2008 toyota 4runner with ease, thanks to the mounting hardware included by Crutchfield. The unit has lots of features and can be customized in almost every aspect. I noticed that some reviewers were concerned about the GPS not announcing street names but, its really not a big deal. My biggest concern was accuracy and reliability. The user can set the GPS to give you early command announcements on distance before turning or approaching an exit. I have yet to set up smart access but am looking forward to it. If you are thinking about buying this unit, I would highly recommended it. If your vehicle has steering controls, I would highly advice on buying the adapter. Some might think you could do without and technically you can but, it is really convenient now that you have Pandora controls and many other options. One last thing, if you are buying for smart access, do some research and make sure your phone is compatible.

Pros: 6 band EQ, 4 Volt amp preout, Excellent bluetooth streaming,SD card slot(for music), lots of customization, HD radio, smart access.

Cons: so far none, I really like the unit.

    Nice Radio with limited features

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a all round nice radio. The navigation and HD radio is nice but that's were it ends at. The intelligent voice is useless unless you want to sit and work to try to use it or have someone from Crutchfield on the phone with you while your using it. I was only able to use the intelligent voice 1 time and now I give up. The installation was not bad if you know what you are doing. It took me about 4 Hours to install in a 2005 Mustang. Was not happy that the rear camera plug in was not include in the radio and was not in stock to order. Still waiting for the part from another retailer. If you are looking for a unit to use Bluetooth and GPS it is a great unit for the money.

Pros: Easy Bluetooth connect and Great navi system. Unit tells you if you are speeding. DVD playback has great picture. Smart link works with Samsung Note 3

Cons: Intelligent voice is really not there. Unit should come with the rear camera harness. Navigation system will not read street names only tells you to turn left or right.

Smart Access and Voice Recognition is a joke. It works 0% of the time. I have an iPhone 5s and Clarions response: Download the Smart Access App v2.1 before updating to iOS 8...really? Also, I don't think this unit is capable of video and picture display via iPhone even if the units "Smart" Access worked. It is supported in Europe I believe...nice. If Crutchfield will accept a return replacement without the original manuals and if that replacement was a smooth plug and play (no re-harnessing) I would probably do it. The only reason I bought this unit was for hands free access of my phone and the particular navigation style it feature. I thought for the price point it was a good deal, but I would save the money and get something else, maybe the 404

Pros: When approaching exits or interchanges naviagtion shows very clearly which lane to take

Cons: "Smart" Access is a joke, I have yet to successfully plug my iPhone in even to charge it.

    Clarion NX604

The reason I bought the Clarion NX604 was for the Smart Access feature. If you have an Android phone you have to make sure that it is HDMI compatible.Otherwise you'll be unable to use Smart Access features. You need to connect your Smart Phone to the Clarion unit with a cable, which I found dissapointing.Like other reviewers, I downloaded the Smart Access App,only to find out it doesn't work in this country. Why is this unit being sold in the US? I've talked to Crutchfield Technical Support several times, and they've tried to be helpful. The Intelligent Voice feature is interesting for the GPS,

Pros: Intelligent Voice for GPS Good Display

Cons: cable required for Smart Access feature Android phone must be HDMI compatible HDMI/Lightning cable should be included . Or Crutchfield sales rep should let customers know that a cable is required

Crutchfield response on Friday, November 14, 2014 For Android phones, there are two versions of Clarion's Smart Access app. The one called "Smart Access 4Car" is not for the U.S. market. The one you need is called "Smart Access." From within the Smart Access app, you can run and use the other related apps like Weather4Car and FB4Car. Android: Clarion Android App

Very Buggy and slow. Wish it was better.

Written By Joe, Kansas City, MO on Thursday, November 06, 2014

I so wanted this unit to work. From the outside it appeared to have everything I was looking for in a head unit. After installation and use, I am disappointed. The pairing process of a bluetooth phone is painful. Not that it's complicated, but you may have to pair, unpair, and pair several times before you can use voice or smart access features. Smart access works about 50% of the time. Currently with iOS8 on the iPhone 6 it is very buggy. Perhaps a software release in the future will fix the bugs, but as it stands it's pointless to even use it. Apps crash constantly, the screen is mis-sized, and touch points don't line up. IntelligentVoice crashes (when it actually works) and is very, very slow. Painfully Slow. I would actually describe the overall experience with the NX604 as that. Painfully slow.

Pros: HD Radio is a great feature to have. Brilliant sound quality. Navigation is nice and the traffic updates work. Unit is fairly easy to install. Sound quality is good overall. Phone call quality is top notch over bluetooth. Crisp and clear on both ends. Better User Interface than I've seen on most other navigation units. Needs work though. Bluetooth streaming works well (when not paired as a 'smartphone', see Cons)

Cons: Smart Access barely works. When it does, it's not useful and very buggy. IntelligentVoice is very slow. Constantly have to pair, unpair, and pair smartphone to get smart access and IntelligentVoice to work. Bluetooth streaming works when paired as 'smartphone' BUT YOU CAN NOT CONTROL IT FROM THE HEAD UNIT! Only from the phone, and only from the command center in iOS. Cannot rearrange icons on main screen, which could be brighter imho. NO VIDEO OVER HDMI! <- Why?!! Even the NX404 Does it!

Absolutely pleased with this unit. Installation was a bit more in tact then I expected but well worth the devotion. I don't have a smart phone unfortunately so I cannot take advantage of the smart access which I'm sure is another great advantage of this unit. I do take advantage of the phone via Bluetooth as that seems to work well. The clarity on the sound is awesome and the EQ is easily adjustable and user friendly. Much clearer sound and better bass while still running the factory speakers and factory amplifier in my car. I would recommend this unit Clarion did an excellent job on this deck.

Pros: Fast, Fun, User Friendly, Great Sound Quality.

Cons: A lot of limitations by not having a smart phone, can't use googles smart voice for the GPS or any of the smart access items without one, kind of disappointing. Overall a great unit though.

Totally satisfied with this unit. Sound, features, easy to use. The unit fit perfectly and was relatively easy to install. Using the "Vehicle Specific" kit, supplied install manual, and wire harness, I had the unit on and working in a few hours. If it sounds this good with factory speakers I cant wait until I can upgrade to better speakers. The navigation and satellite radio... GREAT. The Crutchfield team was awesome. From helping me choose the system to fit my budget and what I wanted.Their tech support is second to none if not better. They knew the product and were familure with my vehicle

Good unit so far - but the Navigation does not announce street names

Written By SI, Berkeley Heights, NJ on Tuesday, July 22, 2014

I bought this receiver along with clarion cc510 back up camera, sirius XM & steering interface. The unit meets my expectations in many ways - yet has its failings. The smart access link is buggy and not ready for primetime. And you need a HDMI /lightning cable - THIS WILL NOT WORK OVER BLUETOOTH. Only Intelligent voice will. And this too is only a 12 month trial ( need to subscribe after that if you want the full feature set - such as navigating directly from the search results ) .

The biggest let down for me is navigation - the default mode when you turn it on for the first time was 'off road' which basically navigates you to your destination as the crow would fly. I though my unit was broken -- only fiddling with the setting made me realize that I had to choose "on road' for it to route it using actual streets - That is PRETTY DUMB. Even after turning this on the navigation will only announce 'turn left' or 'turn right' and not the actual street name .. This is contrary to what Crutchfield has on the website.

Crutchfield response on Friday, November 14, 2014 Our Tech Support team reached out to the customer to see if we could help straighten out the kinks and to get more details from him so that we can improve the information on our site. We have confirmed with Clarion that the access to Smart Access is lifetime, and is not limited to 12 months. If there's a pop-up box stating you will need to pay after 12 months, it is in error. The service will not end.

6.2" Touchscreen TFT Display: The Clarion NX604 has an integrated 6.2" TFT widescreen display with touchscreen controls. The display provides a high-resolution video monitor for watching your DVD videos. The screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 (RGB) and 1,152,000 total pixels. The unit's touchscreen panel features interactive controls making menu navigation easy.

    • Touchscreen GUI w/ Flick Control: The GUI (Graphical User Interface) shows large icons that are highly visible and easily recognizable at a glance. The NX604 touchscreen responds to your finger gestures just as your smartphone screen would. You are able to drag & drop icons into different positions to customize the screen. The touchscreen also supports flick operation, so you can quickly scroll to another menu page.
    • Short Cut Menu: The unit has a main menu for using all functions and a shortcut menu that groups together frequently used functions. Use of the shortcut menu allows you to quickly access frequently used functions. Up to five frequently used functions can be registered to the shortcut menu.
    • Dimmer & Brightness Control: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate. You can also manually adjust the unit's Day & Night display brightness from 0-20.
    • Variable Button Illumination (728 colors): Since the vast majority of functions are controllable from the touchscreen, there are only four physical buttons (including a rotary dial) on the unit for the most basic and commonly-used functions. You can set the head unit's button illumination to 1 of 9 preset colors or have the unit scan through all the preset colors. You can also select three custom user colors by adjusting red, green, and blue values.

Note: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the bright green wire in the supplied wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus. Video can only displayed when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged. If you try to view video with the vehicle in motion, the head unit will simply display "CAUTION! Video is disabled for your safety".

Start Up Time: The NX604 has a start up time of approximately 40.7 seconds from Off to the Map Screen.

"Intelligent Voice" Search: Intelligent Voice is a voice recognition service that lets you search for destinations by just saying what's on your mind, based on Google Voice recognition technology and Google's vast local search information. For this service to work, you will need to download the Smart Access App (from Apple Store or Google Play Store) onto your Bluetooth paired iPhone (iOS 6.0+) or Bluetooth paired Android (OS 4.0+) smartphone. This app links to the Google server through your compatible smartphone and searches for your destination. Unlike typical voice recognition systems that require precise wording, this new technology allows more natural language to find your destination. You no longer have to use a limited set of predetermined words or phrases; instead, this this system enables your search by saying out loud any words that come to mind, so even long phrases are possible. Even if you only half-remember something or mispronounce it, Clarion Intelligent Voice still searches through a wealth of up-to-date Google local search information and presents to you the candidates that are the closest phrases. Once you ask the system of your destination, it will provide you with a list of possible options from Google Places to choose from. Once you've decided on your destination, simply select Start Guidance and your calculated route will display on the NX604's on-screen map.

Note: You can utilize Intelligent Voice from any screen or source on the head unit. Bluetooth audio streaming is turned off when "Intelligent Voice" is activated.

IR + SWC Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible. The NX604 also supports Clarion's RCB176 IR remote control (020RCB176, sold separately) for wireless control of basic playback functions. The remote does not support advanced menu functions or navigation functions.

Anti-Theft Code: You may program the unit with a 4 digit security code. Once the unit has been programmed with a security code, the code must be entered to use the unit after it has been disconnected from power.

2-DIN Chassis: The Clarion NX604 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using your vehicle's factory radio brackets and the supplied hardware. There is also an optional custom double-DIN sleeve (0202DBKT, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to mount the NX604 in a custom 4" opening. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Onboard Navigation

IGO Primo Navigation Software w/ TomTom Maps: The map database (by TomTom) used by the Clarion NX604 was created using high-resolution aerial and land based data collection. Navigation data is stored on the unit's built-in flash memory for quick access and response. The NX604 provides map coverage of the United States (all 50 states), Canada, and Puerto Rico. The NX604's integrated IGO Primo navigation software provides turn-by-turn visual and voice assistance to direct you to your selected destination. The built-in software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included navigation map.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Map Updates: It is easy to keep the navigation system up to date via and your Windows PC (XP and newer). Simply download new map data from Clarion's portal site (, store the updated map data on a microSD card and insert it into the Clarion NX604 via the front-panel microSD card slot. You have 30 days from purchase to download the latest available map free of charge.

GPS (Global Position System): Clarion's built-in navigation helps you find your way to your destination with an integrated GPS receiver & external GPS antenna. The Clarion NX604 features a built-in SiRF GPS receiver and includes a GPS antenna which can be mounted on the dash with the included two-side tape. The NX604 uses Global Position System (GPS) satellites, and a digital roadway map database to calculate and display vehicle positioning and travel direction. The NX604 considers vehicle speed an heading changes, together with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on a digital map. Signal from GPS satellites are used to determine the vehicle location. Three (good) or four (best) satellites must be receive to accurately determine location. This unit does not transmit your GPS position, so others cannot track you.

Note: The navigation receiver took approximately 33.1 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to California. It only took 9.7 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to Maryland. These tests were done inside the Crutchfield Lab of the Crutchfield Headquarters. Results will vary based on length of calculated route and your surrounding area.

Traffic Message Channel (TMC): The Clarion NX604 contains a TMC (Traffic Message Channel) receiver that can provide you with the real-time status of the traffic along your route over the FM Radio Data System (RDS). If traffic is congested up ahead or there is a road closure, the navigation system will automatically re-navigate the route to show you how to get to your destination, quickly and easily. To fine-tune this recalculation, you can set the minimum delay that can trigger a route recalculation, or you can instruct the software to have you confirm the new recommended route before it takes effect. Road segments affected by traffic events are displayed with an alternate color on the map, and small symbols above the road show the nature of the event.

Note: TMC is not available in all cities.

On-Screen Map: The unit's on-screen map shows your vehicle's current position (a blue arrow by default), the recommended route (an magenta line), the surrounding map area, and your destination as a checkered flag. The on-screen map shows streets, roads, and highways in a way that is similar to how a paper road map show them. A road's width and colors corresponds to their importance, so you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about your next route maneuver and the next street or the next city/town. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you. The map also displays data; such as the posted speed limit, your current speed, current time, distance to your destination, time left before you reach your destination, and your arrival time.

    • 2D/3D Map Mode: The Clarion NX604 allows you to view its on-screen map in a 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) view. Similar to paper road maps, the 2D mode, shows you streets, roads, and elevation by color. In 3D mode, you can see the altitude and elevations differences. You can distinguish between valleys, mountains, and elevated roads. In selected cities 3D landmarks and 3D buildings are also displayed.
    • Color Mode: The navigation map screen uses different color themes (Day/Night) during the day and during the night for both the map and the menu screen. Daytime colors are similar to paper road maps, and the menus are bright. The nigh color themes use dark colors for large objects to keep the average brightness of the screen low. You can also set the navigation unit to switch between daytime and night color modes automatically based on the current time and GPS position.
Note: You can display the head unit's AV control bar during on-screen navigation in order to access frequently used audio/video playback functions.

Lane Information & Signposts: The Clarion NX604's navigation map offers helpful lane information & signpost guidance.

    • Lane Information: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
    • Exit Services: While navigation a route, you can find gas, food, lodging, and restrooms near upcoming exits. Services are listed under the following categories - Gas, Food, Lodging, and Restrooms. You must be on a major highway or road to use this feature.
    • Junction View: If you are approaching a freeway exit or a complex intersection and the needed information exists, the map is replaced with a 3D view of the junction. The lanes you need to take are displayed with arrows. Signposts can also be present, if information is available.
    • Tunnel View: When entering a tunnel, the map is replaced with a generic tunnel image so that surface roads and buildings cannot distract you.

Audible Alerts: The Clarion NX604 offers various audible alerts and functions to help you get to your destination safely.

    • Voice Guidance: In addition to graphic directions, the NX604 provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions (does not announce street names) You can select from English, French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese audible languages. The volume of the voice prompts can be increased with increases in speed to overcome road noise. Voice guidance can be turned off if you prefer.
    • Safety Alert: This function can warn you when you approach road safety cameras, school zones, or railroad crossings (if available). You can also add your own alert points. Beeps or the spoken type of alert will be heard when you are approaching of these points.
    • Speed Limit Warning: Some maps may contain information about the speed limits of certain road segments. The NX604 provides an audible warning if you exceed the recommended speed limit.

Note: The unit will mute the audio of the other sources during navigation voice-prompts.

Where Am I?: This screen contains information about the current position (or approximately the last known position if GPS reception is not available) and a button to search for POIs and emergency assistance nearby.
