Our take on the Clarion SRQ1722S

by John Pollard
Clarion

Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Step up your sound quality

Face it, your factory speakers aren't up to snuff, and your music sounds like it's playing out of an antique table radio. Clarion's SRQ1722S 6-3/4” component speakers can breathe some life back into your tunes. These speakers will offer up a soundstage that'll make you feel like you're in the front row at a show, making your commute much more bearable.

Built to add detail to your music

The SRQ1722S system features two premium 3/4” silk dome tweeters that'll really open up your sound, delivering the high-frequency details that make your music sound convincingly real. Mount each tweeter in a good spot up closer to your ears, and you'll hear a strong stereo image with each instrument clearly defined in the mix. The in-line crossover sends the correct frequencies to the tweeter so it'll stay clear and focused at higher volume levels. The 6-3/4” woofer features a rigid aramid and mica-injected polypropylene cone that won't flex when you're pushing your system, so you'll hear accurate midrange and low-frequency reproduction.

From the Crutchfield Labs:

We had a chance to check out these speakers in the Crutchfield Labs recently. We were very impressed by the imaging offered by this system, and really liked the tweeter's wide-open sound. On the flip side, the system doesn't provide the amount of bass we'd like to hear, so we recommend using these components in conjunction with a subwoofer for best results.

Highlights:

  • package includes two 6-3/4" woofers and two tweeters
  • aramid and mica injected polypropylene woofer with rubber surround

Much Better than Expected

Written By Al D., Bay City MI on Thursday, October 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sounded good with just the 14 watts from my radio. Then I amped them and I am amazed how much sound comes out of these things. The highs will shatter your ear drums, they are very clear.
Pros:
Loud and Clear. The price.
Cons:
Don't expect good lows these speakers are only for Mids and Highs. So no real Cons.

Tweeter Crossover BLEW up like FIRECRACKER!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my 98 4runner backed up by 250 watts on each channel turned way down......I was driving along, bumping some Bassnectar, all of a sudden a firecracker goes off in my driver door and I lose that channel! I get in there and take a look......The tweeter crossover was BLOWN UP! Cardboard and foam where everywhere! I was lucky it didn't start a fire!
Pros:
good woofer good price.
Cons:
Tweeter crossover blows up like firecracker!

Written By Glen, Albuquerque, NM on Wednesday, August 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers are ok. I see people say they make everything sound better on their Toyota 05 or better right out the box. I didn't find that to be all that true. Mostly due to the fact that the receiver probably doesn't have enough juice for the speakers. I will be getting a 4 channel amp soon. I am sure the speakers will sound amazing then.
Pros:
Good quality at a good price
Cons:
No adapter for putting the tweeters in the same location on the door. I had to custom fabricate my own

Got a great deal on these speakers. Fits my budget "sound quality" system very well. I like the sound they produce. I do have a little more tuning to do, so, I expect them to get even better.
Pros:
Price. Good fit in my doors.

These speakers surprised me. After reading reviews I wasn't expecting much bass. When compared to the factory speakers the bass response was impressive. The highs are nice and clean. The install was simple. All around these were wonderful factory replacements for the price.
Pros:
Decent bass (still need a sub.) Amazing highs. Simple install.
Cons:
I had to get better retention clips to avoid vibration.

I replaced the rear speakers with these, looking for cleaner mids and highs and more punch than the OEM dual cones provided. What a difference! Great value, easy to install.
Pros:
Quality construction, excellent sound quality, budget price
Cons:
Made my front speakers sound awful by comparison. Next it's a set of Clarions for the front.

O6 saturn vue component

Written By Lunareclipse02, Lewisport ky on Thursday, July 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 06
Pros:
Very affordable! Nice kit with plenty of hardware. Internal crossover so no need of finding where to mount the crossover box. Decent quality for the price.
Cons:
Just about the same sound as my stock speakers. I didn't know what exactly what style of speakers where in my vue till I took off the panels and realized it was a component style from the factory. So the sound is exactly the same but this kit magnet is much bigger. So if I get a better receiver or an amp I am sure it could push out some more thump. Crutchfield speaker mounting bracket didn't work but these speakers came with a set I modified to work. Don't use these for the rear doors.

Quality Speakers

Written By ED B, San Antonio, TX on Saturday, July 20, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These Clarion's are of very good quality. They produce crisp clean highs and great mid-range. I know the Crutchfield techs state that the bass is wanting, but actually it is fairly strong. Currently just powering these with my 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 stock head unit. They are a huge improvement over stock speakers and with a new, stronger head unit will sound even better. As alway Crutchfield tech support was very helpful. Wiring the tweeters was not to difficult. I just used the wires from Clarion and ran it through the door boot and up to the stock tweeter placement after removing side dash panel (snaps in and out).
Pros:
Very quality sound
Cons:
Need some power to drive these speakers.

Exceeded My Expectations

Written By Tom, Charlotte, NC Area on Wednesday, July 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Didn't expect much from a $50.00 pair of speakers.... I just wanted to trash my Toyota Tacoma's factory speakers and jump on these as a short term replacement. Sounded much better than my factory speakers and after added an AMP and under seat sub, they make a perfect pair for me. No I'm not shaking my truck, but wanted a little more base than any small speaker could provide and these provide that mid-range I wanted.

Set your expectations based on the price you paid, and you should be happy.
Pros:
Price Value for the cost
Cons:
Fabrication of the tweeter mounts - many other tweeters would have the same issue, but not all.

Bang for the Buck

Written By Nemo, SF Bay, CA on Monday, July 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic deal! Installed these in a '95 Nissan 240SX and the sound quality is outstanding. Good bass extension and clear throughout the mids/highs. The Nissan speaker pods in the door and the tweeters in the A Panels will provide good output for most speakers, but these speakers definitely perform on their own. Signal is provided by a JVC head unit also purchased through Crutchfield and power is coming from an OEM stock amp. My goal was to use a small budget to replace OEM speakers damaged over time and I didn't expect much of a sound upgrade, but I was thrilled by the impressive results. Installation sheets from Crutchfield were spot-on + the free speaker wire harnesses allowed me to install both speakers in the doors within an hour. I recognized the value, so I ordered another set of these speakers for my '98 Nissan Altima and now expect similar excellent results for that vehicle.
Pros:
Great sound, great value. Multiple tweeter mounting options.
Cons:
The moderate power rating may prevent this speaker from growing with you to a high power system upgrade. Make sure this 6 3/4" speaker fits. Crutchfield rep was great at identifying the fit challenges for my next install in the '98 Altima in a 6 1/2" location, but it looks like I can overcome this with a simple spacer solution.

I installed these on my mothers Nissan Pathfinder for her Birthday Present and she loves them I got these while on sale so I got a great deal for such amazing speakers. They hit so much harder than stock speakers which were ruined. The only hard part was installing them because there was no way to tell which wire was positive and which was negative on the Pathfinder but that isn't the products fault so other than that the speakers are flawless!
Pros:
Can feel the bass, easy to install, so much better than stock.
Cons:
Hard to install and get wiring right (2005 Nissan Pathfinder)

These speakers totally floored me. I have no amp to them and they sound a million times better than the stock speakers! Infact there is no distortion at high volume levels. I just added two 12' kickers and a 1600watt amp and it is amazing. I can only imagine how good it will sound when I get my amp for these speakers. Clean crisp highs and decent bass. At this price your stealing these from Crutchfield!
Pros:
Everything!! Easy install in my Challenger

Installed in a 2013 Kia Optima with an UVO system. Factory speakers were less than substandard. Installed these Clarion components easily in about 90 minutes in all 4 doors. Sound instantly improved hearing crisper highs and improved bass. Due to stock UVO's lack of amplification I will be adding a 4/5 channel amp and subwoofer shortly.

Great Sound for the money.

Awesome speakers. I have the clarion 200w Xc-1410 powering them. One set installed in front door. Tweeters custom mounted with trim mounts and woofers in stock location. Other set in rear deck with tweeters installed with custom mount there too. Everything sounds great. If you can't install your speakers with the included hardware I'd be amazed clarion jncludes everything and anything you'd need. Very clear good bass. And I got them for $51 a pair thanks crutchfield!!!

Great Sound and Quality

Written By Tyler S, Northeast Ohio on Tuesday, June 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in the front doors of my S10 Blazer....what a difference! I had the stock component setup still in the vehicle, with the woofer replaced for about two years and thought it sounded ok. This is just wonderful. Highs and mids are clear and tight, along with tight and decent bass response.

The included adapter plates do make installing the speakers easier in most GM/Chrysler applications. However, do be wary of the space that the adapter takes up. I could not reinstall my door panel until I had removed all the adapter's installation tabs and unneeded supports.

I wired the replacement tweeter to the stock location on top of the dash and it fit PERFECTLY in the stock tweeter plate!

Overall very happy with this purchase and Crutchfield support is great!
Pros:
Clear sounding, all inclusive for all sorts of installations, good bass response.
Cons:
None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

put these in my 2008 jeep wrangler after installing an 8" MTX thunder and 6 1/2" Rockford fosgate's in my roll bar. after leaving the factory speakers in the dash I felt empty for high's. so I researched for about a month and came to these due to their price and specks. after installing them boy was I surprised! what a great speaker the highs sounded excellent and as an added bonus the bass also puts out quite a punch and the tweeter is an excellent cherry on top. I would highly recommend these for a jeep due to their enclosed design.
Pros:
very good highs nice and crisp. good bass as well. fit without brackets but did come with them for the roll bar if needed.
Cons:
no harness for the tweeter but other than that no complaints

Will be adding a sub after I determine where to put the amp. Leaning to mount it behind the rear seat to keep storage under rear seat.

Wired these up today and the overall sound quality is good even with my factory head unit. There was some distortion once you crank them up loud but its probably associated with the factory unit and not enough power. Overall I'm pleased with the sound of these speakers giving the price I paid for them. I'm sure there are better sounding speakers out there just not at this price.

Clarion SRQ1722S

Written By Ben, Benton Harbor, MI on Wednesday, June 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound amazing! I installed them in the front and rear of my 2002 Dodge Durango and they fit perfectly. Getting the tweeters to mount correctly where the tweeters for the stock Infinity system had them was a pain, but I was able to get it done using plenty of patience and several calls to Crutchfield. The woofers were difficult to mount to the stock brackets as well, but I was able to work through it after a long weekend and a lot of calls to Crutchfield. I also like that the crossover is basically a part of the wire that runs from the woofer to the tweeter so there is no bulky box to mount. Though the install was not easy, it was well worth the effort for how incredible they sound! I was not expecting the amount of bass they have, but they can really rock. I would not have been able to accomplish the install without the world class support from Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

1997 Dodge Dakota. They sound great compaired to stock. Good for the price. There is no crossover box which could be good or bad depending on your needs. Might buy another set for the rear.
Pros:
Easy installation, good highs and good lows.
Cons:
Depending on app (+-) no crossover box.
