Select your car

Find what fits your car

Can't find your exact car?

Problem: you've only got room for a single-DIN (2" tall) car stereo in your dash, but you crave a big screen. Solution: install the Clarion VZ401 DVD receiver and its motorized 7" touchscreen. Combined with its slick interface and numerous bells and whistles, you'll have a touchscreen command center that powers out at the touch of a button.

Built-in hands-free calling

You can talk hands-free with built-in Bluetooth®. When a call comes in, you can tap the screen to answer the call, then you'll hear your caller over the speakers. And you can even stream tunes to your radio if your device supports it.

Movies and more

You can enjoy watching DVDs up front while you're parked, or hook up a video screen in the back so the kids can watch movies as you drive. Plug your iPod® or iPhone® into the rear USB input — you'll get touchscreen control over your tunes, and your iPod will stay charged as you drive. You can add an adapter to view video content from your iPhone or iPod, and you'll also find an audio/video input for video games or other sources.

Good news if you crave great sound

The VZ401 plays your store-bought and recordable CDs and DVDs, including discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. A powerful internal amp gives your music plenty of punch, while a premium digital-to-analog converter ensures you'll hear all the musical details. Three sets of preamp outputs let you add amps and subs to the mix, and the subwoofer volume control lets you dial in just the right amount of bass. Clarion includes a handy remote for on-the-fly changes.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Crutchfield team was spot on with support and the equipment needed to make the transition form the factory stereo in my C5 Corvette as seemless as possible. This stereo is a great way to modernize your technology in a vehicle without breaking the bank.

Pros: Improved sound quality through the factory speakers. It kept the vehicle alarm with the amplifier and computer model used with the aftermarket wiring harness to interface with the factory wiring. Bluetooth works great and it charges the iPhone and iPod touch just fine. Video quality for the DVD I'd good but the sound is great. Crutchfield is the real deal Y'all. You may find the same product cheaper but it will not come with the customer service and tech support.

Cons: Some of the reviews from other websites says there is an app to enable the iPhone to mirror the navigation from the phone to the VZ401 screen. Please, do not listen to these other reviews of other blogs and stick to what Crutchfield list on their site. If you do this you will not be led a stray.

I really like the headset. Very easy to install in my 2000 Expidetion. It's very brite and easy to navigate. I listen to a lot of digital audio books and the USB port works great.

Pros: One of only a couple touch screens that fit my truck. Looks really cool. The sound is great my base speakers really thump.

Cons: It turns off when the ignition turns off not when the doors are opened. there is a small red light in the right hand corner that blinks regardless of if you power the head set down. Not sure how much power it draws but it's annoying.

For the price, this is a very nice head unit. The ability to play DVDs and iPod, stream bluetooth audio and make phone calls, and option to add more features as you desire make this a good bundle of features for those on a budget. The quality and overall feel of the unit isn't as nice as the Pioneer double din units I've had in the past, but this is almost half the cost.

    Pros: Price, features

Cons: The volume buttons feel cheap.

Produces good sound and is a solid build. The backup camera option produces a good image (assuming you have a good camera). The display was very bland, with a full color display, they could have put some splash into the display, like album art for example. I attached a USB filled with music including art, it was very difficult to navigate the folders. I would describe the menus as clunky. The Bluetooth works well , but phone calls only output on the drivers speaker. A solid entry level DVD/BT player, but if you want more, spend more.

    Pros: Price, Quality

    Cons: Bland, Clunky

I got this unit to replace a malfunctioning one that I had previously purchased from Crutchfield. My requirements were it had to work with iPhone 5, had bluetooth and a screen for a reverse camera. This was the only other unit that fell within my price range. It works but it definitely has its quirks. The biggest is the fact that I can have a little blinky "anti-theft" indicator when i shut the car off but the screen does not close on its own when power is cut like most units. Other than that it seems that this product is all but discontinued so good luck finding the nav add-on for it.

Pros: Fast response in all inputs. iPod control is excellent.

Cons: Last unit showed song info and album artwork, this just show song title information no setting to auto-close the screen the plethora of wires permanently attached make the unit a pain to install, especially if you're not using those features.

The response of the radio is a little and it kind of plain looking theirs no way to change background. Sound quality is good blue tooth works great way better than my last Jensen not using the navi or backup camera so can't comment.

I always read reviews, looking at the negatives because I have some preconceived notions that the positive reviews are paid off by the company to get more people to buy. This was the unit with the lowest number of bad reviews in my price range, so I decided to give it a shot.

It got to me quick, with all of the proper installation equipment and install instructions. First thing I noticed was all of the wires, they all looked overwhelming and I was questioning the install, but this was not my first stereo install, so as I began to look closer, all of the wires were labeled very clearly as to their proper function. I have not added Sirius, or a back up camera or many of the extra features yet, so I just wired it up to the harness which took about ten minutes of stripping wires and crimping ends on (I don't have good luck with Wire nuts) and after I wired the two harnesses together it literally took 30 seconds to get it installed in my car. I was shocked at how smoothly it went in.

I have been running it for about a month now and I love it. I plan to add more of the features in the future hopefully, and my car is older, so I don't have any steering wheel controls hooked up. Many of the harnesses in the back are all plug n play which would be nice for those using extra features (i.e. Sirius, GPS, Backup Cam, etc.) Works for newer versions of iPhone as well, I have a 5.

I love the VZ401, and I hope it lasts a long time!

Pros: Screen dimming when lights are on (Takes away glare at night without compromising visibility) Bluetooth works great, for both music and phone functions. I was pleasantly surprised. DVD player is good, no problems as of yet. System has great volume. Glad the volume control is on the face, not display. Built in mic seems to work well Touch screen iPhone control Many features and settings that look cool, but haven't gotten the time to play around with them yet

Cons: Bass could be better, but if you need more than what it has you probably have high end speakers and subs. Phone calls are a little quieter than music playback, but that is to be expected. I just adjust volume. Start up is a little longer than it may need to be. 10-15 seconds probably before music starts to play.

I've tried to love this reciever. It just won't let me. I've used it for ~1yr.

This is the "buggiest" receiver I've ever seen. When turning on, occasionally the volume will max out effectively deafening me and my passengers. The iPod dock randomly selects between the dock connector (which is nice for charging) and bluetooth which forces you to select the source on your phone each time you turn the receiver on. Does not always recognize the iPod while attached (cable is in good condition and not pinched) and forces you to cycle through the menus a few times so it finally allows you to select the iPod source.

Bluetooth settings will change randomly so when expecting an incoming call to connect while driving, the call will go unanswered. Internal mic is terrible so I purchased an external mic. Now the receiver will change the mic source randomly so I don't know when the mic will work and when it won't.

Sirius integration is terrible; navigation is clumsy and sound quality sometimes loses an entire channel.

I expected much more from any Clarion receiver; especially this one given it's price. It's unfortunate Crutchfield doesn't have a lemon policy because I'd love to get rid of this unit but have a hard time swallowing the huge amount of money I've thrown away on purchasing this unit.

Avoid this unit like the plague; it's bad news.

Pros: the concept of this receiver

Purchased the vz401 for a replacement to the dodge factory stereo. Very satisified with all. Great sounding. Not alot of "extras" but the best buy for the money by far and can be expanded to just about any configuration!! Blue tooth works great and screen has great DVD resolution. More than enough power and screen slides in and out with ease- Install wass easy and Crutchfield as always comes through with all the stuff you neeed to do it yourself- only took about an hour and it was in and working great!!

    Great stereo!!

I bought this unit back in December and since then have had nothing but problems with it. It's not the actual head unit itself, but the software they have on it. I've waited for firmware updates...nothing!

My advice - if your using this unit with an iPhone/iPod/iPad and look forward to using it with bluetooth, keep looking. It doesn't sync properly if you connect the dock connector and the bluetooth at the same time. Also, not to forget to mention that I've had it on multiple times blast music at the loudest volume once I hangup from a phone call. The only way to fix it, was to turn it off.

They should have never released and unfinished product. Very disappointed!!

    Happy but could be better

Written by: Sims from Reno NV on May 3, 2011

I have had the Clarion for about 3 months now and have been happy just a few things that would make it better

1: Faster start up it has a long open up screen befor any thing happens kind of a pian if you want to use the back up camera
2: No smart volume so if you have it loud when turn the car off it will be loud when it turns on and with out having a knob to turn it down it takes a lot of pushing the button
3: Screen saver or some thing

The other thing that I wish I would have thought about was getting the multi zone.
But as far as controls and set up and use it is perfect and have been very happy

    Display Features

Motorized/Retractable 7.0" Touch Panel TFT Display: The Clarion VZ401 has a motorized, retractable 7.0" TFT wide screen display with touch panel controls. The display provides a high-resolution video monitor for watching your DVD videos. The screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 (RGB) and 1,152,000 total pixels. The display features brightness (0-20) and aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9) adjustments. The unit's touch panel features interactive controls and video graphics, making menu navigation easy. An on-screen numeric keypad allows you to directly access music tracks and movie titles.

Display Angles: You can adjust the display's angle (0-5) for best visibility. After the viewing angle has been set, the unit will return the display to that angle each time, even if the unit is turned off.

Touch Panel Controlled GUI: The GUI (Graphical User Interface) shows large icons that are highly visible and easily recognizable at a glance. And thanks to the touch panel screen, accessing each function is as intuitive as touching its icon. This very straightforward system lets the driver keep his attention on the road, and enables front seat passengers to use any desired function without the need to "learn" anything. What's more, since the vast majority of functions are controllable from the touch panel, there are only 4 physical buttons on the unit for the most basic and commonly-used functions.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent displaying video while the vehicle is in motion, the bright green wire in the supplied harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

Anti-Theft Code: You may program the unit with a 4 digit security code. Once the unit has been programmed with a security code, the code must be entered to use the unit after it has been disconnected from power.

    Audio Section

24-bit D/A Converter: The unit's 24-bit D/A converter re-quantizes the 16-bit audio signals from CDs and DVDs as 24-bit data while maintaining the low distortion and linearity of a 1-bit D/A converter. This allows an expanded dynamic range and clearer reproduction of subtle nuances, for a richer sound when viewing DVDs or listening to CDs.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Clarion VZ401 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the VZ401 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the VZ401 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 40 watts x 4 channels (160 watts total)

Audio Settings: The Clarion VZ401 offers the following audio adjustments.

    • Preset EQ: Flat, Jazz, Pop, or Classical
    • Bass and Treble: Independent and variable bass (60, 80, 100, or 200Hz) and treble (10, 12.5, 15, or 17.5kHz) control (+/- 7 dB); you can also adjust the Bass Q-Factor to 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, or 2.0.
    • Loudness: Compensates for low and high tones during low volume.

6-Channel Preamp Output: With 3 sets of RCA outputs, you are free to add external power amplifiers to create a more powerful, sophisticated audio system. The multimedia head unit is equipped with stereo front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs for connecting the unit to an external amplifier.

Subwoofer Controls: Independent volume control is enabled for the subwoofer preamp output so you can adjust the level of bass output to your liking at any time, regardless of the output level of the other channels. The subwoofer preamp output's level can be adjusted independently from -9 to +9 dB. The VZ401 also features a low pass filter for the subwoofer preamp output. You can select between 80Hz, 120Hz or 160Hz.

Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion VZ401 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner. The VZ401 offers Seek, Scan, Manual, and Preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The VZ401's built-in AM/FM tuner features 3 FM bands and 1 AM band. You can store up to 12 presets in each bands, allowing you to store 36 FM and 12 AM preset stations. You can manually store your favorite presets or have the VZ401 automatically store the strongest stations for you.

Preset Scan: The Preset Scan receives the stations stored in the units' preset memory in order. The unit scans each station for 10 seconds sequentially. This function is useful when searching for the desired station in memory.

Local Seeking: When Local seeking is turned "On", only those radio stations with strong radio signal can be received.

iTunes Tagging: The add-on HD Radio tuner (sold separately) includes iTunes Tagging capability. iTunes Tagging allows you to "tag" songs heard over HD Radio. iTunes Tagging saves the song's title and metadata to your connected iPod/iPhone (you may store up to 64 tags in the memory). When the iPod/iPhone is synced to iTunes, a playlist is generated with links to the iTunes Store where the song can be purchased and downloaded.

Note: This function can be operated with the following iPod/iPhone models - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen), and iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4).

Yes. In my case the image was correct from the get-go. But it can be reversed. I reversed it just to try it out. [ Todd  Apr 03, 2015 ]

you will wire the clarion to the backup light circuit and the picture will appear on the screen automatic and off when you got to drive [ MERVIN E  Mar 04, 2015 ]
I Have a 4wd dodge 2500 mud truck that this is installed on, I actually have multiple cameras all wired in series that I can see all 4 wheels and rocks and such. I actually have to manually hit the camera button to switch to them, however, a back up sensor ive never owned and am not certain if it comes in series with a reverse light indicator or something in the wiring. Overall, I love my clarion, I have the cameras hooked up, I also use the Bluetooth daily, I have the accessories harness for my iPad and iPhone to where I can watch music videos, it has great options for amplifiers for highs and mids and subs, my truck also had factory navigation options of which I took full advantage of with the clarion also. I would personally recommend the clarion unit, I've owned multiple clarion head units and have never had a problem or been displeased with it function or as a product itself. I'm Sure crutchfield techs can line you up on an appropriate matchup on a back up sensor and how it signals in reverse with the head unit. Kyle C. /29yo / memphis tn [ Kyle  Mar 03, 2015 ]
When I had it hooked up in my jeep, I had to hit the button and it also had to be in reverse. However, I didn't really play a lot with it since the previous owner of my jeep wired everything up... So it's possible that there could be some sort of auto feature. [ Matthew  Mar 03, 2015 ]
I have not hooked up my back up cam yet but it would appear as though if wired properly the cam should come on as soon as the vehicle is placed in reverse. [ Chad  Mar 03, 2015 ]
I never got to install the camera since my truck didn't have one but I would think you would have to press the button, I could be wrong [ Marcelo  Mar 03, 2015 ]
If you connect the wires for the reverse lamp, the camera will come on when you put the car in reverse.. If those wires are not connected to the reverse lamp then YES when you hit the camera button on the interface it will switch directly to the reverse camera.. Cool thing is when you choose the camera on the interface you can pull up the reverse camera when going 70 down the highway. [ Jeremy  Mar 03, 2015 ]
I love it. It has all of the features I wanted. Also high power integrated amp. It powers 4 6 1/2 inch speakers without distortion. [ ARTURO  Mar 17, 2015 ]
I currently have it installed with Sirius and it works great! [ robert  Mar 02, 2015 ]

Yes. You have to buy a sat. Radio box for it. Idk what one [ DUSTIN  Mar 02, 2015 ]
I installed mine in a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Probably the hardest vehicle to change over a after market radio due to the shape of the dash. Cruthchfield supplied me with everything I needed including live support. It was fairly easy. On a scale of 1 to 10 it was like a 3 [ EDWARD  Dec 29, 2014 ]
I took it to a local stereo installer here in Phoenix and it was like a 30 dollar install. It was worth the money. [ James Aston  Dec 28, 2014 ]
Sorry, no. Crutchfield was kind enough to allow me to return mine. The 700 series have it built in. [ ARNE  Sep 24, 2014 ]
It will cause the source to switch to camera input. The music will switch off till u select the music source again. [ WILLIAM  Jul 10, 2014 ]
    Sorry I don't have a backup cam [ James Aston  Jul 08, 2014 ]
Got a question about this radio. I have it in my truck and yesterday the touch tone screen stopped working along with the reverse camera. Is this a major issue? Or is there a short some where? The radio still plays but the screen doesn't light up when it opens up. But when I close it before it goes back in its slot it lights up. What is going on here [ Anthony  Jun 18, 2014 ]
