Clarion

Our take on the Clarion VZ709

Clarion's VZ709 DVD receiver looks great — and performs even better. This striking receiver fits in your single-sized dash opening, with a sharp 7" touchscreen that motors out for fingertip control over your system, along with a long list of features and options. You can play all your CDs and DVDs, including those you've loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files.

Hands-free calling for safer driving
Built-in Bluetooth® technology lets you conduct phone calls while keeping your hands on the wheel. When a call comes in, the receiver mutes the music so you can hear your caller through the speakers. The built-in microphone lets your callers hear you.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

iPod® control
Connect your iPod to the rear USB slot, and you'll get touchscreen control over your tunes — no adapter required. Add an optional adapter, and you can play videos from your iPod on the 7" screen while parked.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Get just the right sound
The VZ709's powerful internal amp offers plenty of punch, while a premium digital-to-analog converter makes all your tunes sparkle. The built-in high-pass filter trims the low bass from your front and rear speakers so they'll play loud and clean. You can adjust the low-pass filter and subwoofer volume control for just the right amount of bass.

Use the 3-band parametric equalizer to set and store three preset tone curves. Magna Bass EX lets you boost the lowest frequencies, and Clarion includes a handy remote so your passengers can run the show.

Keep your passengers happy
Enjoy watching DVDs up front while you're parked, or hook up a video screen in the back so the kids can watch movies as you drive. In 2-Zone mode, they can watch a DVD in back while you play your favorite driving music up front.

Adding on
Add an optional satellite radio tuner and get the nearly endless variety of entertainment available. Clarion's optional hide-away GPS system lets you add navigation to the VZ709. And three sets of preamp outputs let you add amps and subs to the mix.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Display Features

Motorized/Retractable 7" Touch Panel TFT Display: The Clarion VZ709 has a motorized, retractable 7" TFT wide screen display with touch panel controls. The display provides a high-resolution video monitor for watching your DVD videos. The screen has a resolution of 1440 x 234 and 336,960 total pixels. The display features brightness, color, contrast, hue and dimmer adjustments. The unit's touch panel features interactive controls and video graphics, making menu navigation easy. An on-screen numeric keypad allows you to directly access titles and chapters of a DVD disc. The touch-screen surface is treated to resist dust and grime.

Display Angle and Position Adjustment: You can adjust the display's angle for better visibility. The display angle can be adjusted from 70° to 110°.

Dimmer Mode: The VZ709 features two screen modes: the Day mode and Night mode. Each mode has its own dimmer setting for day- and night-time driving. When the orange/white illumination wire of this unit receives power (i.e. when you turn the vehicle's lights on), the display will change from the default day color to the default night color. You can independently adjust the brightness of the display with and without the vehicle's lights on.

4 Preset Wallpaper Designs: Background patterns of the navigation system and audio/video sources can be customized to suit your taste or your vehicle's color scheme using the unit's four preset wallpaper designs (Blue, Silver, Black, Orange).

Detachable Magnetic Control Panel (DCP): In addition to the unit's touch panel display, the VZ709 features front-panel, push-button controls. To prevent theft, the control button section of the front panel can be detached once the unit has been turned off. The control panel features a magnetic latch so it can detached and reattached easily without pressing any mechanical button. Once detached a blinking LED is activated to deter theft even more. A hard plastic control panel case is supplied for storing the detached panel. You can set the motorized touch panel to close automatically when the control panel is detached and open automatically when the control panel is reattached.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the bright green wire in the supplied 18-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

Audio Section

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the VZ709 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CZ509 are as follows:

  • CEA2006 Specs: 19 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
  • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 watts total)

DZ-Enhancer: This units provides 3 types of digital sound tone effects stored in its memory, each having six levels of adjustment (-3 to +3). You can choose from the following  DZ-Enhancer presets.

  • DZ1: suitable for factory speakers
  • DZ2: suitable for separate (component) speakers
  • DZ3: suitable for coaxial speakers

3-Band Parametric EQ: The multimedia headunit allows you to make the following Bass and Treble adjustments.

  • Bass:
    • Gain: -6dB to +8dB (in 1dB increments)
    • Center Frequency: 50Hz, 80Hz, or 120Hz
    • Q: 1, 1.25, 1.5, or 2
  • Mid:
    • Gain: -6dB to +6dB (in 1dB increments)
    • Center Frequency: 700Hz, 1kHz, or 2kHz
    • Q: 1.5 or 2
  • Treble:
    • Gain: -6dB to +6dB (in 1dB increments)
    • Center Frequency: 8kHz or 12kHz

Magna Bass EX: To emphasize the deep bass sounds, you can activate the Magna Bass EX effect. Allowing you to boost the ultra-low frequency range of your sound system with a center frequency of around 50Hz, this feature automatically compensates for the increased bass to eliminate any unwanted noise. M-B EX can be turned on or off in the menu.

6-Channel Preamp Output: The multimedia headunit is equipped with stereo front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs for connecting the unit to an external amplifier.

Amplifier Bypass: You can bypass the built-in amplifier so the audio signal can be routed to an external amp in its purest state. This prevents any noise or distortion from being introduced by the internal circuitry.

High Pass Filter: The VZ709 features a High Pass Filter that can be set to either 50, 80, 120Hz or "Through". The "Through" setting allows for full-range operation while the other settings only allow frequencies above the selected frequency to reach your speakers.

Low Pass Filter: The multimedia player also features a low pass filter for the subwoofer preamp output. You can select between "Through", 50Hz, 80Hz or 120Hz. If you select "Through" then your external amplifier's built-in low pass crossover will do all the filtering.

Subwoofer Output Level: You can adjust the dedicated subwoofer preamp output level from -6 to +6 dB.

Dual-Zone Capability: The Dual-Zone function allows internal sources (Tuner, DVD, CD) and external sources (AUX, SAT, USB, iPod) to be played from the Main Zone while selected sources (DVD, USB, AUX) can be played from the Second Zone of your vehicle. Controlling sources of the Main Zone and Second Zone can be made from the VZ709 or the supplied wireless remote control. The audio/video source of the Main Zone are played back on the VZ709's monitor and the speakers of the vehicle, while those of the Second Zone are played back on an optional rearview monitor and optional set of wireless headphones.

CD/DVD Playback

24-bit D/A Converter: The unit's 24-bit D/A converter re-quantizes the 16-bit audio signals from CDs and DVDs as 24-bit data while maintaining the low distortion and high linearity of a 1-bit D/A converter. This allows an expanded dynamic range and clearer reproduction of subtle nuances, for a richer sound when viewing DVDs or listening to CDs.

Extremely satisfied with the audio quality

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

The quality of this unit is excellent. I'm usually mainly concerned with sound quality over flash. This unit does not disappoint.

The user interface is fairly intuitive. Except for the IPOD interface, which is terrible. It's pretty bad considering I have a couple of thousand songs on my iPhone. Finding a song is a pain. So I just use the Bluetooth feature and change songs directly from my iPhone.

The unit could have had a front input for USB and AUX... but when I think about it, it's better that the wires come from the back, where I can route them out of view of everything. Would have been nice though.

The sound. Well I've owned several brands and I have to say it's on par with the Alpines, Pioneers, etc. It makes your factory speakers sound good. (although I'm slowly phasing out just about everything factory in the car). There's a good amount of control for molding the sound; I still haven't had a chance to play around with EVERYTHING, but I'm pretty happy with where things are right now. There's a "Non-fading" RCA output for my subwoofer, which is excellent. It would've been better if they'd just called it "sub-out" so I didn't have to do any research while installing, but whatever. I don't think you'll have complaints about the sound.

DVD playback is what you expect. Nothing skips, control is fairly simple, and sound is fine.

Overall, I'm enjoying this headunit.

I have had this product for about 2 weeks now and it works great. Still finding new features and learning how to use the ones it has. Great expand-ability with this unit and an overall good pick for a well priced touchscreen model. This is my second car stereo from here and I always shop at crutchfield and suggest it to everyone who asks about my new stereo, they have the best prices out of everywhere I have shopped and they always include everything you need to get this into whatever vehicle you have.

Not bad

Written By Tim, Tucson, AZ on Sunday, May 01, 2011

I just bought this headunit to upgrade from my old one. I like it so far, but there's some things I don' t care about it. The unit gets real hot so I took the bottom of the bracket out so it could get better air flow. Bluetooth on it is a little odd, it will hook up to my phone for the mp3 but for the phone calls I have to hit the bluetooth button on the phone to get it too go throught the unit. Ipod works great on it. I would tell any one to get this unit, because its nice and it sounds great. Oh one other thing, the volume only goes up to 33. Don't know why but its sounds way louder than the other one I had. I gave it a three star cause I've just got it four days ago and because it gets real hot.
