Our take on the Yamaha A-S500

by Jim Richardson
Yamaha

Everything you always wanted in a stereo receiver, except the radio

An integrated amplifier is essentially a receiver without a built-in AM/FM tuner. You get power to drive your speakers, audio controls, and inputs for music source components. Connect an iPod, a computer, a network music player, or any other device that can play Internet radio, and you may find you have no need for an AM/FM radio.

Do you always have to spend a fortune to get high-fidelity sound? Listen to this solidly built integrated amplifier, and you'll agree that the answer is a definite no.

To keep the sound clean, Yamaha keeps the signal path short and well organized inside a sturdy, vibration-resistant housing. A high-current design and high-grade internal components mean you'll have plenty of sonic muscle for dynamic musical peaks. Pure Direct mode lets you bypass the tone, balance, and loudness controls for the purest possible sound.

Because our ears' sensitivity to high and low frequencies is diminished at low volume levels, Yamaha includes a continuously variable loudness control that lets you experience rich, full sound at any volume setting.

The A-S500 offers enough inputs to connect six audio components, including a turntable. Two sets of main speaker outputs let you connect an additional pair of speakers. And the included remote gives you easy control of the amplifier and the other Yamaha audio components in your system.

Highlights:

  • 85 watts x 2 channels into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.019% THD
  • 4-ohm capability allows use with a wide range of speakers

Features

ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance.

Stereo Amplifier: The Yamaha A-S500 features a dynamic, powerful stereo amplifier with low impedance drive capability. The amp is rated at 85 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 8-ohms with 0.019% THD (100 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 6-ohms with 0.038% THD).

Dual Heat Sinks: The Yamaha integrated amplifier employs dual aluminum-extruded heat sinks to ensure effective heat dissipation and help achieve crisp, clean sound.

Aluminum Front-Panel:  The Yamaha A-S500 integrated amplifier features an elegant aluminum front-panel to resist vibration.

Controls

Bass and Treble: The stereo amplifier features independent bass (20 Hz) and treble (20 kHz) controls so you can increase or decrease the low and high frequency response (+/-10dB).

Balance: You can adjust the output balance of the left and right speakers.

Loudness: The A-S500 features a continuously variable loudness control (0 to -30 dB), so you can retain a full tonal range at any volume level; thus compensating for the human ear's loss of sensitivity to high and low frequency ranges at low volume.

Pure Direct: The Pure Direct switch is used to best reproduce the sound of any source by bypassing bass, treble, loudness, and balance circuits.

Speaker Selector: The Speaker Selector switch allows you to select only A speakers, only B speakers, A and B speakers simultaneously, or no speakers; so you can control which speakers are playing.

Impedance Switch: The amplifier features a rear-panel impedance switch to match the impedance level of the speakers connected. Choose High or Low:

  • High: Select High if using one set (A or B) of speakers with impedance of 6-ohm or higher; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 6-ohms or higher.
  • Low: Select Low if using one set (A or B) of speakers with the impedance of 4-ohm to 6-ohm; if using two sets (A and B) of speakers simultaneously, the impedance of each speaker must be at least 8-ohms; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 4-ohms to 6-ohms.

Record Out Selector: The A-S500 features a record output selector switch which is independent of the input source selector; this allows you to record the selected output source while listening to another input source. The unit's volume control does not affect the fixed record level output.

Remote Control: The included IR remote (RAS5) controls this unit and select Yamaha AM/FM tuners, CD players, and iPods (when the optional YDS-12 iPod dock is added).

Connections

Analog Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha A-S500 integrated stereo amplifier is equipped with six analog stereo (RCA) inputs for connecting external audio sources such as a CD player, AM/FM tuner, Turntable, and/or cassette deck. There are also two pair of RCA outputs for recording through the amplifier.

Note: The unit's Phono input also features a ground terminal and is designed to connect a turntable with an MM cartridge.

Speaker Outputs: The Yamaha stereo amplifier features binding post terminals for its A & B speaker outputs. You can use the A & B speaker outputs to power two pair of speakers, or bi-wire a single pair of compatible speakers. The terminals are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.

Headphone Output: The A-S500 integrated amplifier is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone output for connecting a pair of headphones (sold separately). The headphone output and speaker outputs will work simultaneously; you will need to rotate the speaker selector switch on the front-panel to the Off position to turn off the sound from your connected speakers.

iPod Dock: With the optional YDS-12 iPod Dock (item number 022YDS12, sold separately), you can connect your compatible iPod or iPhone to the A-S500 and control audio playback using the remote control or the iPod itself.  The YDS-12 is Made for iPod and Works with iPhone compliant and supports the following iPod model functions (as of November 2010):

Best Purchase In Years

I replaced A Harmon/Kardon HK3490 receiver with this amp. What awesome sound. Paired with my Polk 400TSI speakers, subwoofer and my oldie but goodie Realistic Lab 500 turntable, wow. Also awesome with DVD and CD player. I am very pleased with this purchase. Not to mention Crutchfield's fantastic 2 day free shipping. A deal hard to beat!

Excellent Value

Written By JonathanS, Oakland, CA on Monday, August 25, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The A-S500 provides excellent value for its performance. Its a reasonably powerful, flexible, 4 ohm capable receiver with nice detailed sound and excellent dynamics. That said, there are signs of how Yamaha was able to put so much core value in an amplifier which goes for hundreds less than comparable ones: the indicator lights for the controls are tiny and virtually invisible from any distance. More annoying to me is the lack of any electric outlets on the back (switched or otherwise) for your components. If you really are going to use those six inputs, you better have access to a lot of outlets.
Pros:
Excellent sound Powerful 4 ohm capable
Cons:
little chintzy details like the lack of electric outlets.

A-S500 Intregrated Amplifier--Great Amp

Written By Bob D., Seaford, DE on Friday, May 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a medium priced amplifier for two JBL speakers in a small to medium sized room. I have a Dual turntable and a CD player. The amplifier was just perfect. In fact I can only turn it up so much or it will be heard all over the house. The sound is absolutely perfect --- In fact I am going back to all my old music and re-playing it and it sounds brand new in places. I give it 5 stars.
Pros:
Good range and good value.
Cons:
None -- some of the knobs felt a little bit cheap.

Quiet, Clean, and Musical

Written By DE2000, Irvine, CA on Sunday, May 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Being used to ultra low distortion amplifiers such as the Nikko Alpha 650, I love quiet and power amps. While this isn't a very powerful amp, it is very quiet and musical. Still has plenty of power though for typical listening. I am using this amp to power a pair of Polk RTi A7. It is a great combo.
Pros:
Great low noise floor, dynamic range, and very detailed (musically).
Cons:
The knobs feel cheap. The volume knob, especially. And it has no LED indicator where the volume is.

money well spent

Bought this amp for my shop, a very loud boat building shop. It must overcome 100 db background noise. Played through very efficient Electro Voice speakers it does very well. Very stable with no residual distortion. It gets played very loud.
Pros:
Would make the average mid level audiophile a good choice. Not a whole lot of bells and whistles, doesn't need them! Quality sound
Cons:
none

Great Amp!

Written By JeffT, Midwest on Thursday, March 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love this amp. It is well made and looks attractive. Has nice features and produces some great sound. For the price, you aren't going to beat this amp. There are lots of more expensive amps that aren't near as good. The mindset in home audio is that Price=Quality, but that is not always the case. If you are looking for a solid integrated amp, look no further.
Pros:
Value. Sound quality.
Cons:
The remote is a bit mediocre, but that's a small gripe.

Tremendous Amp.

Written By Lymbo90, Asheville, NC on Tuesday, March 25, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had originally purchased the NAD356BEE for myself and the Yamaha A-S500 for my brother. After setting up his system, I was highly impressed with the Yamaha. My system has a better sub and better speakers but his sounded better.

Thanks to Crutchfield I was able to painlessly exchange product and save a nice chunk of change. I know have the Yamaha and my sound has improved dramatically. You'd think an amp costing about $400 more (the NAD 356BEE) would be the better amp. I can tell you for my system the less expensive Yamaha is clearly the better amp. Again, thank you Crutchfield for being so easy to work with and getting my purchases to me in rapid fashion. They are best online retailer I've ever done business with.
Pros:
Clean, powerful sound with a dynamic, wide sound field. Plenty of inputs. Dedicated sub out. Nice remote.
Cons:
Absolutely none.

Exelente Integrado. Excellent Integrated Amplifier.

Before buying the Yamaha I bought the NAD D3020, a great product but for small speakers. After talking with the Crutchfield team (people who do know what they're talking about) they recommended the Yamaha A-S500 for the type of speaker I have, the Energy RF 500 towers. On connecting them I quickly noticed the amplifier's power and its excellent audio quality. It is comparable to Audiophile units but without paying exorbitant prices. For this price, it's an excellent unit.
Pros:
Calidad de audio , potencia y precio Audio quality, power and price
Cons:

Better than expected

Written By Jason, Lynchburg, VA on Thursday, February 27, 2014

I walked into the store and knew exactly what I wanted - which was this amplifier. I set everything up and was blown away by how well built, well sounding, and easy to use this product is. Sound wise, all I have to compare it to is a 1980's Pioneer unit being played through crappy speakers - so, not much to write about here other than that this is truly far and away better. This is the first piece in my system building process and I look forward to finding speakers and other components to compliment it.
Pros:
Remote control, great sound, and great looks.
Cons:
None

Close but no cigar

Written By Anonymous, Lawrenceburg, Tn on Friday, February 21, 2014

After a few years of using an old JVC receiver, and upgrading to Polk bookshelf speakers and a sub, it was finally time to upgrade the amp. In comes the Yamaha A-S500. Based on the reviews here and elsewhere, I went with them and for the most part they are right! This amp looks great in my setup and appears to be well built. I was instantly impressed by the clean clear sound this unit provides. Nothing was too present or too laid back and works equally well for music and movies as well. My only complaint is with the loudness control. With it set to flat I get great full sound, but as I roll it back, no matter how loud the amp is, the left speaker becomes almost non existent in volume compared to the right. I have to roll the balance almost all the way to the left to balance the sound out with the loudness turned down. I personally have no use for the loudness control, but the fact it does not work correctly is still an issue for me at this or any price point. Everything should work. It sounds great, no complaints there, it just has this one flaw and Im afraid it will fail in other ways later. I will be contacting customer support and exchange it for a NAD of some sort. I hate to rate it low because it does sound great, really it does. Crutchfield delivery was spot on though! Ordered the unit on Saturday afternoon and received it Wednesday in a larger box with my cables and plenty of packing material. 5 stars for shipping!
Pros:
Price, looks, great sound quality, plenty of ins and outs for cd players tuners iPods turntable and anything else, sub out as well.
Cons:
Loudness control does not correctly, at this or any price point, all features should work correctly. Also, the sub out is crossed over at 90hz according to the manual. Might be an issue for some.

Solid Amp

Written By SteveA, Cincinnati, OH on Wednesday, February 19, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Yamaha is exactly what I was looking for. A solid, powerful, natural sounding amp for under $500. I've been playing Hi Resolution FLAC files from my MacBook into an AudioEngine D1 DAC and then into the Yamaha. All this powering a pair of Axiom Audio M2i bookshelf speakers and an Axiom powered sub. I'm far from an audiophile but am very pleased with the sound. Recordings that I've listened to for years sound better than ever. With 85 watts per channel there is plenty of power for my main speaker set up and I have hopes to power a set of outdoor speakers soon. Some of the other reviews mentioned the plastic feel of the controls. While I see what they're referring to I haven't given it a second thought after hearing amp.
Pros:
Clarity, power and cost.
Cons:
No internal DAC

Best integrated amp for under $400!

Written By Peter, Buffalo, NY on Monday, January 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

One caveat, every review is relative to user's expectations and past audio gear. So with that being said, this Yamaha amp was a nice improvement over my 1999 Denon AVR-3300 105w x 5 .05% THD. Much more robust, better midrange and excellent clarity. This amp is driving Phase Technology PC 1.5 (2 way book shelf- speakers) with ease and produces a very neutral sound, with just the right amount of warmth. The sub out is very responsive, works great with the HSU research VTF-1 10" powered sub. My room is approx 13' x 23' with 8ft ceilings. Sources: Arcam cd player, Sony blu-ray, Kenwood KT-57 FM tuner . At this price point it's difficult to do much better. I just ordered nice 1991 Yamaha FM tuner TX-950 which I hope will be controlled with the A-S500 oem remote. I think for my other room I may try the new Marantz PM-6005 (as it has built in DAC) and I will use Paradigm Mini Monitor V6 speakers.
Pros:
clean power, simpe operation, has subwoofer out, great price!
Cons:
no led on vol knob, no DAC/ Toslink (which would be nice for Samsung LED TV & blu-ray player hook-up)

Fits the bill...

Written By RudiE, Claremont, CA on Tuesday, December 31, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As I have been working to build up the best sounding system that I can afford at this time, after many review reads, I popped for the Yamaha A-S500. Knowing Crutchfield is great about the auditioning process, I had little concern as I plugged it in. With my new Alesis MKII monitors and Schiit Modi DAC, immediately I heard a more powerful and clear sound from my system. Previous a Pioneer AV receiver never delivered the level of signal in both depth and volume. Not sure why but I am delighted with the Yama. At least until I can afford something more...
Pros:
Lots of power; simple design; clean and empty when no signal running through.
Cons:
As most others say, wish the volume knob had a line, light or mark of any sort. I'll have to paint my own.

Outstanding Amplifier

Written By Carlos M, Prairie Village, KS on Friday, November 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I belong to a local car club in the Metro Kansas City area and is surrounded by auto enthusiasts that are also audiophiles. After enduring years of verbal abuse because of my cheap stereo system at home, I've decided to give in and set-up a budget audiophile system in my bedroom. I would like to first admit that there is a difference between an audiophile grade audio system that these guys have compared to mine, but never really thought of setting one up as I'd rather spend my money on my cars. That said, I purchased this Yamaha integrated amp from Crutchfield, partnered it with Marantz SA-8004 (bought somewhere else), and a pair of Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1. The guys basically invited themselves to come over so they could listen and they all loved it. More importantly, I love it myself. One of them said that the system in his bedroom cost him 5X more than mine, but my system sounds every bit as good, and to his surprise, more engaging. To be honest, I had a heck of a time deciphering half of the things they've said and could not care any less. My ears love what they hear coming from this little system and I'm quite happy!
Pros:
Sounds great Inexpensive

I bought the A-S500 to replace a dead 35 yr old CA-810 in my office. Glad to say the technology has improved. The sound is full and rich. All the controls you need and none you don't. I connected my PC, a CT-1010 tuner, a Dual turntable, a Nakamichi cassette deck and a pair of Klipsch speakers. Everything works and sounds perfect. A real value for the price. Highly recommended.
Pros:
Spartan design. Excellent sound. Simple set up.
Cons:
Will only come out of Standby Mode by using the remote.

Replaced old NAD power Amp that died. The AS-500 delivers clean unaltered sound with enough input flexibility for turntable, tape payer and other devices. I also got the I-pod dock and I am impressed with the ease of set up and the interface to the unit. All in all a great piece of equipment. I haven't had a Yamaha unit since the mid 80's but I am very pleased to see the company still delivers a quality product at a realistic price point.

Written By PB in VA, Northern Virginia on Tuesday, September 24, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Seriously impressed with what you get for the price. I've owned gear across the spectrum, from cheapy receivers (Technics, Denon, Pioneer, Yamaha) to mid and high-end surround and stereo separates (Adcom, B&K, NAD, Anthem, etc). While this unit will never be confused with the upper-echelon of audio, I am so far getting way more than I bargained for with the A-S500. This amp is beautifully driving a pair of Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 45s (see my review of those speakers) in a 20x16 exercise room with 9 foot ceilings. I added Yamaha's YDS-12 i-pod dock and am very happy with the sound and simplicity of operation. This rig was intended to provide background music for working out, but I find myself really listening to the music - there is a very engaging soundstage and impressive depth and placement of instruments/vocals. I have purchased a little Polk PSW111 sub on the assumption I would need to supplement the bass a little. I am wondering now if I'll even need it, the Yamaha-DefTech combo offers up impressive, controlled bass. As the hub of a second or even a primary audio system, you can do a lot worse than this unit. Yes it lacks a lot of bells and whistles and the build quality and styling is modest and befitting of the price, but it still has the essential features and connectivity to do the job and do it well. I like the Loudness feature and I use the tone controls without apology, they work well and help tailor the speaker performance to the room. Get one!
Pros:
Solid and simple. I am getting good sound quality and ease of operation without paying for unneeded features. Great for music with the i-pod dock and bonus of having a sub-out, though the performance is so impressively full range with the Def Tech 45s, I may not need a sub after all.
Cons:
Remote is just ok, the controls for i-pod take a little getting used to and the buttons are too small and poorly labeled. The retro tone control and balance dials are a little flimsy but again befitting a unit at this price, the average aesthetics are far outweighed by the excellent performance.

Just got my new receiver and so far, so good. Set up was uneventful and everything is working as advertised.
Pros:
Simple and does what it's supposed to (drive a turntable). Nice sound as well and seems to be built better than my last Yamaha AV receiver.
Cons:
Some small dots on the volume knob would be useful.

Yamaha A-S500

Written By Jim B, Richmond, Va. on Saturday, August 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm old school when it comes to stereo components so when my Technics SU8600 decided to check out I was on the hunt to find a replacement that would not be stepping backwards. I knew what I wanted and I knew what I didn't want so when I found the Yamaha A-S500 I knew the search was over. It has the power and clearidy I was expecting from a Hi Fi stereo amplifier! I also stepped up to a remote control that I didn't have from the 70's. If you are looking for an amp to replace an older amp or receiver you will not be disappointed! It also has a sleek smooth look which adds a style to you room. I have enjoyed it everyday since it was delivered to my door. I still miss my old Technics but nothing last forever and this Yamaha is a nice replacement !
Pros:
Power, good clearidy and separation ,sleek look and overall nice for the money!
Cons:
The volume control feels cheap, could have given it a sturdier feel instead of cutting corners.

nice sound

Written By musicman, NYC on Tuesday, August 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

musician 45 years, heard lots of live music, had lots of stereo gear. sorry, need to say this to explain my review. I'd say 95% of recorded music we hear is the engineers/ producers idea of how the music sounds. even "live" recordings. okay. so the sound stage is created by them, usually drums center back slightly raised; rest of rhythm section, horn section, bkgnd v; l & r, middle; lead voice(s) [inst or v] front cntr or maybe l & r if 2 or more. than 2. as I said it's the person with the final MASTER who decides. so, this amp. very nice sound stage. after burn edge taken off highs - still crisp but not shrill. plenty of power. fit and finish, alas, are very cheap looking/feeling. no led on vol knob. but they have them on selections, direct, and power? strange. have to take a star away for that, even tho it's probably what makes this amp such a deal. was looking at nad and Marantz which were about $100 more. got this one because of the power and good reviews. probably would have went for either of them if I had to do it again. fit & finish are that bad. I feel I have to handle the controls with kid gloves. thank goodness for the remote. last setup I ran were Adcom separates pushing Bose 901s as I said before, this is a fine, fine amp for the price
Pros:
sound stage imaging. power. number of inputs.
Cons:
fit & finish are terrible. no ac switchable/un-switchable power outlets on rear

Good integrated amplifier

Written By Rick, Birmingham, AL on Sunday, June 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this amplifier 3 weeks ago and I have been very satisfied. I believe it is the best amplifier in it's price range. Beautiful clarity and depth. The sound imaging is excellent. I was previously using a late 70's Pioneer sx780 that was my father's stereo but I couldn't keep it from breaking down every two months. So, instead of fixing it again I looked for a new amp with a phono stage. The first thing that I noticed from the amplifier was the amount of clarity that the A-S500 had compared to the Pioneer. The bass was loud but controlled (without sounding compressed); the treble clear without being tinny. I am running a cd player, a record player and the occasional ipod. I am very satisfied with this purchase. I haven't tried all the amps in the world , but I think you would be hard pressed to find a better amplifier in its class and price range.
Pros:
Great clarity, imaging and sound in general. Has a phono stage.
Cons:
The volume nob is plastic which isn't really important, but still sort of feels like a corner was cut but the manufacturer. Not a con, but I haven't really used the pure direct at all. Maybe will in the future.

Great value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my 16 year old Yamaha receiver with the A-S 500, and my 19 year old Polk speakers sound sweeter than ever with the more powerful 500 at 85 watts/channel. It was a great value also at the price. I highly recommend it if you are looking for an upgrade or building a new stereo system. Also, the Crutchfield team was great in assisting me on my order.
Pros:
Plenty of power, simple to hook up,phono and subwoofer input, and looks good. You can't go wrong on this amp
Cons:
No switched AC outlets for my tuner and antenna. For some reason (economics?) Yamaha removed them on this new model Could use a white line or light on the volume control to show its position when listening, but this is minor.

Why to buy

Written By DA, Florida on Thursday, May 23, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

4.9999 stars.. Clean, crisp and clear. 85 watts fill a large room with 16 foot ceilings. Subwoofer output, direct sound and analog circuitry makes this amp great. If you are looking for a home theater system... this is not it. If you are wanting a high quality, accurate amp for music look no farther. I'm not going to give it the kiss of death by saying its great for the price, but I bought this for $; and a good deal needs to be recognized. If you believe that more expensive means better sound then the amps at the bottom of the search page is where you should go. You will get more watts and more features but not a distinct difference in sound quality. Been there, done that. The one change I would make is putting led light on volume knob. Very happy with this amp. It's a keeper.
Pros:
See above
Cons:
Ditto

Great Sound!

Written By MikeP, Colorado Springs on Friday, May 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp produces excellent sound and seems to do a much better job playing my digital files than my old amp did. I switched from a Denon AV unit that lasted me 23 years, and there are some things I miss about it that the Yamaha is missing. The Yamaha does not have a light on the volume dial, which is a bit inconvenient, nor does it have switchable A/C power outlets on the back to plug in other components. This unit cost 1/2 the price of the Denon unit I had, and it sounds better.
Pros:
Outstanding sound, price
Cons:
No light on the volume switch, no switchable A/C power outlets on the back

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced my old Sony receiver with the Yamaha A-S500. (Didn't need a tuner anymore - listen to radio through computer. ) Had limited budget. The Yamaha has brought my Paradigm Reference Towers to LIFE. The sound is warm yet detailed, and the Bass is true now - not forced. I am a classical composer/musician, so great, natural sound is important to me. Great product at relatively inexpensive price. And Crutchfield had it to me in record time. (No pun intended!). I would highly recommend this product for audiophile wannabes like me on limited budgets. Having fun now rediscovering my CD collection!
Pros:
Great sound - balanced and natural.
Cons:
The indicator on volume knob is hard to see.

Yamaha A-S500

Written By KeithL, Ben Lomond, CA on Friday, April 19, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a 30 year old Pioneer Amp. Easy to connect, plenty of power, nice feel to the knobs. I was looking for a unit with the A/B/A+B speaker selection, multiple inputs and enough power. The Yamaha unit seemed to be the best choice. It seems to be a very good value for the feature set.
Pros:
Looks great, sounds great. Easy to attach peripherals including IPOD, phone and so forth plus my old turn table, receiver, CD stack, and tape deck. More inputs to spare. Amplifier is a good value.
Cons:
Speaker wire terminals are a little clumsy to use, but work fine. The IPOD adapter is pretty pricey for what it is.

Very pleased. Using amp this to power a pair of Definative Technology AW5500 on the patio. Wow! The only complaints might come from the neighbors, none from me. This Amp is well a well built and sounds great. Very pleased.
Pros:
Great Sound. Great looks. Great Price.
Cons:
The terminals are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.

POWERFUL AMP

Very powerful amp with low distortion levels that produces a very clean sound.
Pros:
Low distortion levels for clean sound.
Cons:
None about the amp's quality, but the knobs just has a small scribe line that's the same color as the knob and you can't tell exactly where all the levels are. Woudl prefer an LED or colored scribe lines so you know where all the levels are. But this is very minor.

Powerful, clean sound!

Written By Shanman, Greensboro, NC on Tuesday, December 04, 2012

Let's continue with the 5 out of 5 star rating. This amp kicks ASS! Half the total harmonic distortion of the comparable Yamaha reciever (THD 0.019 vs 0.040) and it blows away the 5.1 channel Sony receiver I replaced with it. If you want clean, powerful sound, go with this Yamaha integrated amp.
Pros:
Clean and powerful. Elegant design. Easy set-up.
Cons:
Volume dial could have an LED indicator so you knew how loud you have it turned up. Also wish Crutchfield sound the matching Yamaha tuner. They sell the matching Yamaha CD player but not the tuner. Come on Crutch.

Superb sound quality. Hi-Fi sound all the way

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this amp open box item. Well I was not able to tell that it was an open box since the amp came looking brand new without a single scratch. I connected the amp to my Klipsch Reference speakers and I was amazed by the sound quality, the sound stage is definitely Hi-Fi sound with amazing stereo separation, sound can be identify coming from separate speakers. The bass is well defined and the highs and mids too. I am realy surprised by the quality of sound and build. Even my Ipod sounds like is not compressed mp3 music any more. Only down side is the plastic knobs but they do look very nice with the brushed metal finish. I do recommend this amp all the way, before this amp I had a Kenwood KA-9100 vintage amp and the Yamaha wins in every aspect hands down.
Pros:
Sound quality , Hi-Fi sound for sure. Strong base, sweet sound stage
Cons:
Really none, plastic knobs , really not a big deal

Quality with simplicity

Written By Rob_L, South Carolina, USA on Tuesday, April 10, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha A-S500 has restored my joy in listening. I started out building my own Dynakit stereo equipment in the '60s but had tried to "modernize" the last few years. Two different consumer-grade AV receivers had left me feeling frustrated listening to music. The digital conveniences were great (such as switching all the HDMI sources, etc.), but the audio sections were just plain anemic. The highs were missing in action and the lows had no guts (unless I used a good quality powered sub I have - and even then, there was a hole between the super-lows and the mid-bass). In addition, there were no loudness controls on either AV receiver, making low volume listening rather lackluster. I had even tried replacing my large, '70s vintage floor-standing speakers thinking that they might be aging or out of date. WRONG! All along, the problem was with the low-current power supplies and digital over-processing in the AV receivers. Swapping the A-S500 for the most recent AV receiver brought the excitement of hi-fi listening back into my living room. Even my (slightly) aging ears can hear the highs again and the lows will "tickle your innards." Clarity is back and I now remember what dynamic range is. The response throughout the frequency range is smooth without coloration. It's hard to explain how pleased I am with the A-S500. Kudos to Lyle for helping me arrive at this decision, too.
Pros:
No "digital takeover" in the signal path - just pure sound. Simple.
Cons:
Plastic knobs. Slightly deeper than some units - hard to fit in an entertainment center when using banana connectors for the speakers. Both very minor issues.

Although I have not used it much yet, I think this Yamaha Integrated Amplifier provides balanced sound, with such clarity that I'm hearing parts/instruments in songs that I didn't hear/notice before. It seems to run cool, and I also like the motorized volume knob and the gentle step-down of the mute. I'm awaiting delivery of an Olive O3HD cd server that should be phenomenal in tandem with the A-S500.
Pros:
Sound clarity. Simple Look of the front panel. Value.
Cons:
Small LED inidcator lights.

Excellent Quality Value Priced

Written By Sketco, Cleveland, OH on Saturday, January 29, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Yamaha A-S500 integrated amplifier because I have two sets of speakers in my living room. One set is for the media system and although they sound great with movies, they are not very musical. The second pair sound great when connected to a good amplifier. Unfortunately the Onkyo TX-SR705 which is excellent for the media speakers has Zone 2 speaker outputs which are unsatisfactory for for driving the speakers I use for music as it is not possible to adjust tone or balance for Zone 2.

The Yamaha A-S500 provides the few adjustments I need. The speakers are slightly off center in the listening area and the balance control allows me to center the sound. The variable loudness control while unusual in its function compared to others I've encountered works very well providing proper proportioning of bass and treble across all volume levels.

All in all I'm very pleased with the "sound" of the Yamaha A-S500 in that it provides clear crisp fidelity while never getting in the way of the music.

Is it possible to connect a graphic equalizer to this unit???? [ Robert  May 19, 2014 ]

  • Have yet to hook them up. I bought them during the winter months and now since warmer weather has arrived, I am involved with my work. I hope to install them soon. [ PAUL D   May 20, 2014 ]
  • Good question, Robert. I hoped to connect an EQ to mine and was disappointed to find that I couldn't. There are plenty of input and output choices but no tape monitor which is evidently necessary to connect an equalizer. If you find a way, I'd love to hear it! [ Carl   May 20, 2014 ]
  • Yes it is possible. However, in my case I run all my components through the EQ which kind of renders the input selector switch on the amp useless because my EQ only has one output (it's pretty old). Basically, I'm only using the "Line 1" input on the amp. So to fix this I have a RCA selector switch in front of the EQ to toggle between my components. BTW the amp sounds fantastic. I replaced a thirty year old pioneer with this and I love it! Hope this helps. [ Paul   May 20, 2014 ]

  • Where to insert the mini to RCA cable? This cable has 2 ends. The end that has the 2 terminals - one red, one white - goes into the back of the Yamaha into one of the inputs which has a corresponding knob in the front. For the mp3 device you do not need an expensive cable. [ HONG   Apr 30, 2014 ]
  • First of all let me say that I enjoyed the sound quality from the Yamaha AS500. I did not connect an mp3 device such as an iPjone or iPod directly into one of the (RCA) inputs. What I did was I connected the iPhone to the audioengine d1 dac (which provided a better sound) and from there to the Yamaha amp. You might want to try to connect from the mp3 device through a mini to RCA cable (which Crutchfield stocks ) into the Yamaha input. I think it should work. But please turn the volume control down first. If the sound quality is good, great! Good luck! Watch the volume control. [ HONG   Apr 30, 2014 ]
  • Yes by using a Metra Mini-to-RCA Cable available at Crutchfield or many other audio suppliers. Just plug it into one of the open audio inputs on the back of the amp. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120A35RCA6/Metra-Mini-to-RCA-Cable.html [ MARK   Apr 30, 2014 ]
  • The mini plug plugs into your MP3 player and the RCA plugs go into the back of the amp. I plug it into the AUX input but you could use any except the phono input. [ JERRY   Apr 29, 2014 ]

  • Thanks - I'll have to see what a docking port is and see if I can get one to fit. [ mistere   Apr 29, 2014 ]
  • Not into the amp per se. there is an optional ipod dock, or you can just get an RCA to mini plug wire and use the aux connection on the back panel. that's what I do. but, I don't think this method give you remote control of the ipod. [ JON   Apr 29, 2014 ]
  • The amp has a docking port. I have a separate dock I use with my iphone to listen to Pandora etc. You would need to get a dock with a matching connection to the amp. It is a fairly standard type so I would assume you can find one for your MP3 device. Best to check that out before hand. [ KEITH   Apr 29, 2014 ]
  • No,but it has a dock jack for playing tunes from an i/phone /ipod. [ HAROLD   Apr 29, 2014 ]
  • Yes, I play an mp3 player through mine quite often. One way is to order a mini plug to RCA cable from Crutchfield. If you do a search in the Crutchfield website, you will find several options. I use a DAC (digital to analog converter) to improve the sound, but it's not necessary. [ JERRY   Apr 29, 2014 ]
  • Yes, but only with a docking station. Glenn [ GLENN   Apr 29, 2014 ]
  • No, you need to buy a stand alone mp3 holder. I bought Yamaha's (model# YDS-12) to use with my IPod and it works great. It plugs in and it's ready to go. Hope this helps. [ WILLIAM J   Apr 29, 2014 ]
Can I get this unit in Silver? [ Don  Jan 09, 2014 ]
