About the Yamaha AVENTAGE BD-A1060

Jeff Miller

Solidly built for distinguished audio performance

Since most of us stream movies and shows these days, I've noticed a slight change in approach to premium Blu-ray players like the Yamaha AVENTAGE BD-A1060. While excellent for video, these players really shine as top-notch music sources for high-end stereos. (We use a Blu-ray player for loudspeaker demos here at Crutchfield.) And who better to handle the shift in focus to audio than Yamaha? A household name in live music and instruments.

Yamaha Aventage BD-A1060 Blu-ray player -- inside

The Yamaha AVENTAGE BD-A1060 Blu-ray player uses the same top-notch audio circuitry found in Yamaha's A/V receivers.

The BD-A1060 is built to complement Yamaha's AVENTAGE line of home theater receivers, but it will fit well into any serious audio setup. Inside the rock-solid chassis, the audio, video, and power supply sections are built on separate circuit boards to avoid interference. Yamaha used thick layers of steel for the frame and high-grade aluminum for the front panel. This keeps discs stable as they spin and reduces sound-muddying resonance.

Of course, movies still matter

When you can play physical discs in your TV setup, you're not at the mercy of your internet service provider. I love streaming shows and flicks, but my wife and I have had many movie nights thwarted by service interruptions. The BD-A1060 is not only a reliable way to play movies – it is designed to really show off your big-screen TV and home theater system.

While it doesn't play Ultra HD discs, it can upconvert standard Blu-rays and DVDs to near-4K picture quality Plus, the high-end audio circuitry pays off when it comes to watching movies, too. This player supports all the top Dolby and DTS surround sound formats, including discs encoded for Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.

Digital or analog — it all sounds better

Yamaha uses some of the same internal components in the BD-A1060 that they use in their tried-and-true AVENTAGE receivers, for the best possible sound. And the player has flexible digital and analog outputs that help you take advantage of its great performance. There are digital audio outputs along with stereo RCA and professional-grade balanced XLR analog outs. The HDMI output passes multi-channel audio to any HDMI-equipped receiver.

Built-in Wi-Fi for movies, music, and screen mirroring

A 32-bit/192kHz digital-to-analog converter helps squeeze every detail from discs or digital music files, including high-resolution downloads. This player has both front and rear USB ports. You can even push the "Pure Direct" button to turn off the video circuitry, which minimizes interference for music.

You can connect this player to your home network via Wi-Fi and play tunes from a compatible networked PC or smartphone via DLNA. You also have access to VUDU for on-demand movies. Plus you can wirelessly “push” videos or photos from your phone to your TV's big screen. Miracast™ technology mirrors the screen of your compatible mobile device, tablet, or computer screen for everyone to see.

Easy control with your smartphone or tablet

What's the best way to control this player's many features? Download the free Yamaha AV Controller app to your smartphone or tablet. Available for Apple® or Android™, the app offers easy touchscreen control of the BD-A1060's most important features. And if you do have a Yamaha receiver in the mix, you can basically control your whole home theater setup — including switching sources and volume control — all from your phone or tablet.

Video Features

HDMI Output: The Yamaha BD-A1060 features a single HDMI (ver.1.4) output for digital audio/video signal transmission. The HDMI output supports 4K upscaling, 1080p/24Hz native resolution, 3D video, Deep Color, x.v.Color, and HDMI CEC.

Note: There are no analog video outputs.

4K Upscaling: Through the HDMI output, the BD-A1060 is capable of upscaling the resolution of standard-definition DVD, network, and USB video to 4K. Output options include Auto (highest resolution accepted by the TV), 4K, 1080p, 1080i, or 720p. If necessary the output resolution can also be set to 480p or 480i.

Note: This unit only upscales to 4K; it does not support native 4K ultra-HD Blu-ray discs.

1080p/24Hz Output: The BD-A1060 includes a 1080/24p HDMI output option to faithfully transfer film images as they were originally recorded. When connected to a 1080/24p display, you can enjoy the remarkable video performance of Blu-ray disc without converting or scaling the signal.

3D-Ready: The Yamaha BD-A1060 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. This player automatically selects 3D or 2D mode based on video content; or it can be set to always display 2D. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

Color Technologies: The Yamaha BD-A1060 supports both x.v.Color & Deep Color technologies, as well as 4:4:4 color space through HDMI.

  • x.v.Color: x.v.Color reproduces a wider range of color than the HDTV standard, showing almost all of the colors that the human eye can detect. Currently there is no x.v.Color software available on Blu-ray, but the BD-A1060 is ready to take advantage of x.v.Color discs when they become available.
  • Deep Color: The HDMI output supports Deep Color, increasing the number of bits available for transmission, meaning more colors are displayed. The BD-A1060 can provide 4,096 shades of each of the three primary colors, for a total of 68.7 billion possible colors. This results in greater color fidelity, smooth tonal transitions, and ultra-fine gradations between colors. It also enables more shades of gray, for higher contrast ratio.
  • 4:4:4 Color Space: The Blu-ray player also supports RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, and YCbCr 4:2:2, color space through its HDMI output. With 4:4:4 color space, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail.

Picture Adjustments: The following picture adjustments are available.

  • TV Aspect: Set the TV aspect ratio to match the connected television - 16:9 Full, 16:9 Normal, 4:3 Pan Scan, or 4:3 Letter Box.
  • Noise Reduction: Reduces noise in picture. You can set the Noise Reduction to a level of 0 to 3.
  • De-Interlacing Mode: You can select how to detect the video signal. Set to Auto for normal use. When horizontal stripping noise appears on the screen, set this to Film/Video to remove the noise.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view additional content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Features

High-Quality Construction & Components: The Yamaha BD-A1060 incorporates a variety of high-quality parts & components that enable superior audio reproduction.

  • Rigid Chassis: The BD-A1060 has a front-panel made of high-grade aluminum and top and bottom panels made of steel, 0.6mm and 1.2mm thick, respectively. Compared to the previous model, it is 30% heavier, using a heavy base to provide a stable core for high stability. In addition, the drive mechanism is mounted to the chassis by a 1.2mm-thick steel plate. Thanks to this strict anti-vibration construction, signal degradation is minimized.
  • Precision Circuitry: Electronic parts are selected for highest sound quality. For example, the audio circuit uses the same type of block chemical capacitors used in high-end AV receivers. The circuit path layout was carefully considered with grounding points chosen to best reduce interference between analog and digital circuitry. These stable voltage reference points are key to isolating the analog and digital signals and keeping them pure.
  • High Purity Power Supply: The power transformer has independent windings for both the analog and digital sections to reduce noise caused by electrical and magnetic interference for improved signal-to-noise ratio.

Analog & Digital Outputs: The Yamaha BD-A1060 is outfitted with both balanced & unbalanced analog outputs, as well as optical & digital audio outputs.

  • Balanced & Unbalanced Analog Outputs: The BD-A1060 provides XLR audio output terminals, which are used for pro audio applications and ensure low noise for high sound quality. In addition, all stages after the audio DAC to the output terminals are balanced. When used with an amplifier that has balanced input terminals, such as the CX-A5100 AV preamplifier (sold separately) or other integrated amplifiers, the BD-A1060 achieves the highest possible disc reproduction performance. The Blu-ray player also provides unbalanced stereo RCA output terminals. Multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) soundtracks will be downmixed to 2-channel via balanced or unbalanced analog outputs.
  • Optical & Coaxial Digital Audio Outputs: This unit features one optical and one coaxial digital output. These can be connected to an A/V receiver, amplifier, surround decoder, or other component with a digital input. Depending on the source and setting, the output will be Dolby Digital, DTS, or 2-channel PCM. The digital audio outputs can also be set to Re-encode; this adds the secondary audio (picture-in-picture commentary for example), if present, to the main soundtrack and re-encodes the signal as DTS.

32-bit/192kHz Audio DAC: The Yamaha BD-A1060 is equipped with a TI (Texas Instruments) PCM1795 DAC (digital-to-analog converter) that supports up to 24-bit/192kHz for superior audio playback from your Blu-ray, DVD, & CD disc collection.

Digital Audio Formats: The Blu-ray player's HDMI output is capable of multi-channel bitstream (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital, and DTS); and multi-channel PCM output. The optical and coaxial digital outputs pass either Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream, or 2-channel PCM.

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus is an improved Dolby Digital signal format that is compatible with up to 7.1 channels of discrete digital sound and also improves sound quality thanks to extra data bit rate performance. Dolby Digital Plus enables cinematic Dolby surround sound in 7.1 channel with the addition of surround back speakers.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a high definition audio technology developed by Dolby Laboratories, using lossless coding technology to faithfully reproduce the sound of the studio master. This format provides the facility to support up to 8 audio channels with a sampling frequency of 96kHz/24bit resolution and up to 6 audio channels with a sampling frequency of 192kHz/24bit resolution. Dolby TrueHD is adopted for applications that put very high importance on sound quality.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is a high-resolution audio format, which provides a higher quality audio experience than standard definition surround sound. Its compatible with sampling frequencies of 96 or 48 kHz and up to 7.1 channels of discrete digital sound. High data bit rate performance (2.0-6.0Mbps) provides high quality sound.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio, the premium high definition format, utilizes variable bit-rate technology to deliver the ultimate audio quality, while conserving file size and bandwidth. The result is an uncompromised audio experience that brings movies, music and games to life, just as if you were in the studio listening to the master recording.  This lossless audio format provides the facility to support up to 8 audio channels with a sampling frequency of 96kHz/24bit resolution and up to 6 audio channels with a sampling frequency of 192kHz/24bit resolution.

Q
I understand that CD players and DVD players use different laser frequencies to read CDs and DVDs. That is why newer CD players typically sound better reading CDs than do DVD players reading CDs. I am by no means a tecky so I guess my question would be does this unit also have an extra laser that reads only CDs?

There is no need for a cable between the two units. I don't really believe either has an awareness of the other. The app finds each of them independently and controls each of them separately. Seems to communicate with the receiver much more robustly than the Blu-ray.

I wish I could be more helpful. I returned this product as it's technology tops out at BluRay. I wanted to update to 4k in our theater.

Yes , if wired directly the wifi will disable and automatically set itself on wired mode makes it a lot easier to use .

I believe so. I don't have cable or satellite TV. No Wifi.

If this connected directly to an Amplifier with XLR how do you control the volume? Sounded like that is what some have done in the reviews.

I have connected the Blu-ray player to my Yamaha network receiver and control volume through my phone or iPad with the Yamaha app. Works reliably and incredibly convenient
leo  Mar 17, 2020
A
This unit cannot control volume at all, from any of its outputs. (HDMI, XLR or RCA). The power amplifier will need its own method of volume control or you will need to interpose another control device (pre-amplifier, receiver, volume attenuator, etc.) between this unit and the power amplifier

I am looking to possibly buy this to play cds over the sound system in a church and also want to have the option to use it as a DVD player as well if needed. But I would like to be able to record church services to a rewritable cd or to a Zip drive as well. Can you do that with this?

I would like to use my iPod classic (160 Gb) with this unit through the USB port. Will I be able to use my iPod controls to choose which songs/playlists to output? (there are far too many files to display if the unit takes over control of the iPod output)

It will not work. The USB port on this receiver is only able to recognize USB mass storage devices like USB thumb drives.

Does this player show disc information when used as an audio-only player and not connected to a video screen?

Yes, it shows you the track number being played and the play time. You can change tracks by using the forward and back buttons on the face of the unit
daryl  Feb 18, 2019
A
Not sure what you mean. It has a display that shows track, etc. yes.
john  Feb 16, 2019
A
The unit gives you the track number and the elapsed time of each track, no other information.

I'm using it as an audio-only player. When the disc is inserted, the display simply says "CD" (or "SACD" for a super-audio disc). When playing, it shows only the track number and elapsed time of the track.
edward  Feb 16, 2019
A
When you put the disc in the player it shows the total number of tracks on the disc and the total playing time for the whole disc . When you play the disc , it shows what track number is currently playing and counts the time the track has been playing . You need to be aware , however , that in order to set up the player , you will need it connected to a video screen in order to make your setup selections . After that, you don't have to have a video screen . I have been using mine as an audio-only player since I have had it and am very pleased .
thomas  Feb 16, 2019

The player readout displays only track number and time elapsed since beginning of track. Fairly limited display. Mine is connected to my Yamaha RX-A2030 receiver so I do see the disc information on my TV. The mobile app (assuming player is connected to LAN, wired or wireless) is limited to controlling the player and assumes you are able to see the disc info via connected TV.

This set plays Blu-ray 3D, Super Audio CD and DVD discs. It is compatible with the Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master AudioT surround sound formats. Additionally, for network use, it handles FLAC and ALAC 192 kHz/24-bit and DSD 5.6 MHz high-resolution audio formats. Hope that helps. It's a solid system that we've had for just over a year and use pretty much every day.

Does it allow programming of CD/SACD/BR tracks for playback? This feature is essential for audio use but missing from many players.

I have two Yamaha players and they both play CD's. I have no SACD's. Both units are fine machines and I am glad to have purchased them. I originally ordered a Denon unit that I though it had audio problems. It turned out to be the digital output on my LG 42 inch TV. The fiber optic output was used from the TV to the Onkyo unit that I never used before. When I hooked up the Yamaha unit that was a replacement for the Denon, I had the same problem so I hooked up the Yamaha straight to the Onkyo with the fiber optic cable and I have been enjoying trouble free audio ever since. The Denon needed hooked up to the TV, the Yamaha allowed me to go back to the original hookup I used for years. The Denon was not defective and I am sorry for the mix up but did not know what the problem was until the Yamaha did the same thing, intermittent audio. Hope you don't mind the extra info but I was extremely happy with all involved with the order and return. I still use the very first purchase from Crutchfield, a pair of EPI bookshelf speakers that must be 30 years or so. $79 and $3 shipping. I have purchased many items from Crutchfield and will be in the future. I miss the catalogues but realize we are in the electronic age.

There is nothing in the owner's manual or product research that specifically states support for FLAC multi-channel files. I wish I had something definitive to share with you, but you may want to reach out to Yamaha's support directly at 800-292-2982 for more information on that.
