About the Yamaha BD-S2900

Loren Barstow
Treat yourself to state-of-the-art picture and sound quality with Yamaha's DV-S2900 Blu-ray player. It boasts an advanced video processor for true-to-life images with smooth motion and precise colors. The 'S2900 can also output Blu-ray video at 24 frames per second when you connect it to a compatible HDTV. Why is this important? Because movies are shot at 24 frames per second, so maintaining this frame rate ensures the cleanest, most filmlike picture possible.

Wraparound sound that completes the theater experience
You'll also enjoy high-resolution audio that perfectly complements the high-definition picture. Just use an HDMI cable to connect the 'S2900 to a receiver with Dolby® Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD™, or DTS-HD Master Audio decoding. These newer surround sound formats deliver greater detail than what you've heard with DVD. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio even feature "lossless" compression for sound that's identical to the movie studio's original master.

BonusView: extra content with secondary picture and sound
The BD-S2900 supports the BonusView features found on some Blu-ray discs. These features include things like directors' commentaries and behind-the-scenes footage. BonusView displays this material, complete with audio, in a smaller window inside the main picture. You can easily access this function using the 'S2900's remote, and you don't need to stop the movie first.

User-friendly features and options
Five different picture modes, including one user-adjustable setting, make it easy to get the BD-S2900's picture looking exactly as you want it. And Yamaha's Dialogue Enhancer makes voices easier to understand. The 'S2900 is also compatible with the SCENE function found on some Yamaha receivers, and sports a matching front panel designed to give your Yamaha system a neat, uniform look.

Features

Blu-ray Disc: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 40 mbps. Blu-ray Discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better picture quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 1080/24p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better sound quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS-HD Master Audio, and uncompressed 5.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater storage capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Compatibility with your current disc collections: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Blu-ray Profile: The BD-S2900 has Blu-ray Disc Final Standard Profile (Profile 1 version 1.1), which supports several features not available on earlier generation players (Note: Although the word final appears in the name Final Standard Profile, this is not the last Blu-ray profile to be introduced). Which of these new features is available varies by disc:

  • Picture-In-Picture: This function plays the primary video and secondary video simultaneously; for example the original movie might play as the primary video while playing commentary from the film director on a smaller screen as a secondary video. Both primary and secondary audio tracks typically play simultaneously.
  • Virtual Package: Some BD-video discs copy data to other media (local storage) and then play the secondary video, secondary audio, and subtitles (sub contents) simultaneously. These functions are known as Virtual Packages. Sub contents are automatically recorded to other media from the disc prior to playing the virtual package. Playback methods vary depending on BD-discs. This player uses its SD card slot along with an optional SD-card to copy data from applicable BD-video discs.

1080/24p Output: The BD-S2900 includes a 1080/24p HDMI output to faithfully reproduce film images recorded on a Blu-ray disc. When connected to a 1080/24p display, you can enjoy remarkable video performance of Blu-ray which brings out the full character of film material.

Deep Color: The HDMI output supports Deep Color, increasing the number of bits available for transmission, meaning more colors. The BD-S2900 can provide 4,096 shades of each of the three primary colors, for a total of 68.7 billion possible colors. This results in much greater color fidelity, smooth tonal transitions, and ultra-fine gradations between colors. It also enables many times more shades of gray, for higher contrast ratio.

Compatible Discs: The Yamaha BD-S2900 supports the following disc formats: BD-Video, BD-R/RE (recordable Blu-ray), DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW (VR mode supported), DVD-R DL, DVD-RAM, DVD+R/RW, DVD+R DL, CD, and CD-R/RW.

Note: This unit uses NTSC, so BD or DVD discs you play back must be recorded in the NTSC system. You cannot play back BD or DVD disc recorded in other color systems.

SD-Card Slot: The front-panel SD-card slot supports SD (8MB-2GB/including miniSD and microSD) and SDHC (4-16 GB) memory cards. An adapter (typically included with the card) is required to play miniSD and microSD cards. JPEG still photos and AVCHD video can be played from the SD card.

MP3 Playback: The Yamaha Blu-ray player will play back MP3 audio files written to CD-R or CD-RW discs. The unit supports MP3 files with a sampling frequency of 44.1 or 48 kHz and a constant bit rate of 32-320 kbps. The player can recognize up to 999 files in 99 folders.

JPEG Playback: The BD-S2900 will also playback JPEG still image files written to CD-R/RW, DVD-RAM, or BD-RE discs and SD or SDHC memory cards. Resolutions between 34x34 pixels and 5120x3840 pixels are supported. The player can recognize up to 999 pictures in 99 folders on CD, 3000 pictures in 300 folders on DVD-RAM, 9999 pictures in 300 folders on BD-RE, and 3000 pictures in 300 files on SD. Images can be rotated and enlarged. You can also play a slide-show (with background music if played from an SD card).

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video format used to record high definition or standard definition video, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital camcorder and recorded on DVD disc or SD card to be played back on the BD-S2900.

Future Compatibility: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will likely become available for downloading from the Internet.

Digital Audio Formats: The Blu-ray player's HDMI output is capable of multi-channel bitstream (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital, and DTS) and multi-channel LPCM output. The optical and coaxial digital outputs pass either Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream, or 2-channel PCM.

Speaker Management: When using the analog outputs, or digital outputs (optical, coaxial, and HDMI) set to PCM, the following speaker management adjustments are available:

  • Speaker Configuration: select large, small, or none for the front, center, surround, surround back (7.1-channel PCM source via HDMI only), and subwoofer (on or off)
  • Speaker Size: speakers set to large receive a full range signal; speakers set to small are crossed over at 100 Hz
  • Channel Level: the volume level for each of the 5.1 analog channel outputs is individually adjustable
  • Delay Time: relative to the front speakers, you can optimize the time at which sound is output from the other speakers according to their distance from your listening position; center, surround (one adjustment for left and right), and surround back (one adjustment for left and right)

Dynamic Range Control: You can activate the Dynamic Range Control (DRC) function to compress the dynamic range of the output signals when playing back DVD/BD recorded in Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, or Dolby TrueHD.

Picture Adjustment: As well as having Normal, Soft, Fine, and Cinema presets, you can individually adjust the following:

  • Contrast: adjusts the difference between the bright and dark parts of the picture; -7 to +7
  • Brightness: adjusts the brightness of the picture; 0 to +15
  • Sharpness: adjusts the sharpness of the edges of horizontal lines; -6 to +6
  • Color: adjusts the color shade; -7 to +7
  • Gamma: adjusts the brightness of the dark portions of the screen; 0 to +5
  • 3D NR: reduces the rough noise in the background to improve depth; 0 to +4
  • Integrated NR: smoothes block noise and reduces smudging around contrasting parts of the picture

TV Aspect: Set the TV aspect ratio to match the connected television:

  • 16:9: use with a wide-screen TV; 4:3 video is displayed in the center of the screen with black bars on the sides
  • 16:9 Wide: use with a wide-screen TV; 4:3 video is stretched to fill the screen
  • 4:3 Pan&Scan: use to play back wide screen video on a 4:3 TV in the Pan&Scan mode with the sides of the picture cut off
  • 4:3 Letter Box: use to play back wide screen video on a 4:3 TV in the letter box mode with black strips at the top and bottom

Slow Motion: The unit allows slow motion playback, forward and backward, at five different speeds. Sound is muted during this function.

HDMI Control: When connected to a Panasonic TV with the VIERA Link or EZ Sync feature, specific control commands are delivered via the HDMI cable between the player and TV:

  • Automatic Input Switching: when you begin playback or access the on-screen display, the TV automatically changes to the correct input
  • Power on Link: when you begin playback or access the on-screen display, the TV automatically turns on
  • Power off Link: the Blu-ray player automatically turns off when the TV is turned off

Resume Playback: This function allows you to resume playback from the point at which the playback has been stopped on the disc even if the power to unit is turned off.

Angle: Some BD and DVD discs contain scenes which have been shot simultaneously from various angles. This player allows you to select from these different camera angles.

Screen Saver: The screen saver function starts if there is no activity at the unit or its remote for more than 10 minutes. The screen saver deactivates when there is any activity.

Dimmer: The brightness of the front panel display on this unit can be adjusted between three settings; Bright, Dim, and Auto (front panel gets dark during playback).

Parental Control: Parental Control allows you to set a rating limit, preventing your children from viewing inappropriate material. Playback will stop if the ratings exceed the levels you set, and it will require your to enter a 4-digit password before the disc will play back.
